A cat, some rats, and some stupid looking humans... 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a really cute story. Basically, a bunch of rats, snacking on wizardly refuse, attain sentience. They also hook up with a sentient cat. They can all speak, learn, and chat with each other, and at the Cat's devious notion, dupe a "stupid looking kid" to play the role of a rat-piper, moving from city to city where the rats act up, the Piper comes in and clears the rats out, and they all get paid.

This time, however, they've stumbled into a town where there's something really evil going on, and all the wisecracking cats, tapdancing rats, and stupid-looking kids in the world might just be in over their heads.

Well written, with a bit of whimsy in nearly every chapter, this was my introduction to the Discworld series, and I dare say I'll be back. The wonderful observations from the rats point of view are fantastic (there's a great part where one of the rats is asked something along the lines of: "Do you know what animal swarms into a place, breeds terribly, spoils everything they can't use and wastes everything they can until there's nothing left?" and the rat says, "Sure. Humans.")

The story gets a bit dark in places for a young reader, though a teen would probably get a laugh. And the mythology lover in me adores the play on the Pied Piper of Hamelin - like Orson Scott Card's "Enchantment" did for Sleeping Beauty, Pratchett did here for the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Be Amazed! 5 out of 5 stars.

Well, I loved Terry Pratchett's "The Wee Free Men" so much that I thought I would be disappointed by this one. While I still liked those little blue miscreants better, this book was very entertaining. Maurice is simply a delicious character, and I loved the various rats (who, now that I come to think of it, remind me of the Wee Free Men). Of course they have great names, these rats, and that alone is worth the price of admission, as they say. Few authors can make me laugh out loud, but Pratchett is one of them. If you've never read this author, then this is a good book to start with! As far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong with magic and talking animals.

Editorial Review:

Maurice, a streetwise tomcat, has come up with the perfect scam. Inspired by the Pied Piper tale, cat and kid lead a band of rats from town to town to fake invasions of vermin. The rewards to get the rats out of town are plentiful. It works perfectly - until their little con game is sussed.

Editorial Review:

Maurice is no ordinary cat. He's amazing. He can think, he can talk...and he has an amazing scam going. And all he needs to pull it off is an army of intelligent rats and one stupid-looking kid. But when his gang enter Bad Blintz, the town they have decided to con next, they soon realize that all is not as it should be - and decide to investigate. Three squads of rats spread out under the town, their mission to dismantle traps, bury poison, do some serious widdling, and to find out exactly what those resident rat-catchers are up to...It contains new, innovative activities specifically tailored to support the KS3 Framework for Teaching English, and help students to fulfil the Framework objectives. The activities include work on Speaking and Listening, close text analysis, and the structure of playscripts, and act as a springboard for personal writing. It provides insight in the plays themselves by their popular authors and adapters. It provides advice on staging.

not another discworld novel 5 out of 5 stars.

Thank god. I started reading Pratchett when I was younger, and I loved it. Now I'm not sure if the discworld series is loosing it's edge, or maybe I'm just growing out of it, but with every new discworld book, I become increasingly disillusioned with the whole thing. The style, for me,(and I'm sure for old tezza himself) is just getting a bit tired. Not so with the nomes trilogy. It's a proper old time heart warming story. (A Story, remember Terry? not just a paycheque.) I'm sure that you can pick up all you need to of the narrative from the other reviews, and if other reviewers also like his other stuff, well that's just fine. I don't mean to take any thing away from the books for them, I'm sure Pratchett has already taken enough.

An absolute must for everyone 5 out of 5 stars.

Although I enjoy the Discworld novels this trilogy will always stand out as T.P's best work. It's funny to the point where you can annnoy people around you, it's easy to read (and compelling)so you get that "just one more chapter feeling".

I won't spoil the book with details but T.P's descriptions of 4" high people with problems in a full size world are excellent.

One more thing

Log off now and go borrow it, steal it or even buy it but READ IT!

Editorial Review:

Hilariously inventive, witty and highly original, The Bromeliad is the enormously popular Terry Pratchett’s magnificent trilogy of tales about a race of little people struggling to survive in a world of humans.

Classic Pratchett Fun for Early Teens 4 out of 5 stars.

I love Briggs' adaptations of Pratchett and this is no exception. With 23 speaking roles and a couple of voice only roles as well as 3 non-speaking parts this is perfect for reading in a classroom and has some great activities to use as well.
As an English teacher, this is an incredibly effective text because the activities are relevant and easy to use and the text is interesting.
As a drama teacher the text is interesting although I would prefer a smaller cast.
It's kind of similar to "I see dead People" but with a much more lighthearted take on the topic.

Editorial Review:

Johnny Maxwell, visiting the local cemetery, discovers that he can see the dead. He can talk to them, too - much to his friends' amazement. So when the news breaks that the local council plans to sell the cemetery to a property developer, Johnny learns that there are some things in life (and death) that are worth fighting for...It contains new, innovative activities specifically tailored to support the KS3 Framework for Teaching English and helps students fulfil the Framework objectives.
