But Ladybugs are beetles 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I got this book out of the library for my 3 yr old grandson. Bugs were very important objects this summer. He had me renew the book so many times I finally bought it. He loves to hear about the different bugs, count their legs and body parts and identify the pictures. He's learning about science and having a ball. It's one of his favorite bedtime books.

Solid, Easy to Read and Understand Science Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is great because it is easy to read, clear in terminology and fun to read at the same time. My students are middle school students learning English, this book can be very informative and clear up any misconceptions of English words and definitions regarding bugs and insects. That can be enormously important in learning science in a language a student is not fluent in.

A wonderful seasonal story for young children! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 4 year old class really enjoyed this story and the cooking activities we did as follow up. The illustration is beautiful and the prose is appealing to young ears.

Great for fall! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I read the Big Book version of this with my primary classes, accompanied with the audio, and they really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun just before Halloween. They liked the fall colors. It was pretty and colorful. It is not a "baby" book as it is classified, but is appropriate for kindergarten or first grade.

Family focused simple story about the Autumn Season 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A simple story about things that a family can do in autumn. Depicts apple picking with the family at an apple farm, pumpkin picking, and carving a jack-o-lantern. The last three pages feature trick or treating with the children dressed as: pirate, ghost, queen and a devil.

This is a short story with illustrations going across both pages, bright colors, hand drawn.

This book has a low word count and is for very young children, from toddlers through age five or perhaps even six. This is perfect for use by Preschool, Kindergarten teachers and homeschoolers when the teacher wants to read books about the autumn season. Of course it is also good for parents to read to children.

I enjoyed that the book was family focused and about a family doing things together, versus just talking about apples and pumpkins.

Editorial Review:

It's fall! And for one little girl, that means it's time for the special joys of visiting a farm and picking the reddest apples from the trees and finding the best pumpkin in the patch.

Carreer Day 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is the fourth book written by Anne Rockwell's about Mrs. Madoff's class. This multicultural career book has children introducing their parents' careers to the rest of the class. There is a wide variety of careers included not just the typical ones. There is an African-American mother who is a judge, a child's grandmother who is the school crossing guard, one dad is a paleontologist, a Hispanic dad is construction worker, an African-American mom is a nurse, and a mom who is a veterinarian. The characters cross different cultures and genders for the wide selection of careers chosen to be represented in this book. The illustrations are very colorful and each career is represented on two facing pages. The first page shows the child with their parent and a small picture portraying their profession. The next page shows that person working in their field of work. The text is written in a large font, which makes it easy to read.

Editorial Review:

Jessica's mother is a veterinarian. Pablo's father is a construction worker. Michiko's mother writes books. What kinds of work do people you know do?

On Career Day the children in Mrs. Madoff's class take turns introducing special visitors. Every visitor has something interesting to share, and together the class learns all about the different work people do.

In the fourth Mrs. Madoff book, Anne and Lizzy Rockwell revisit Mrs. Madoff's class as they help young readers explore the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Editorial Review:

After Charlie's teacher reads a story about the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving, the class decides to act it out. Charlie is the Mayflower. Opposite a picture of Charlie decked out in a paper ship is the "page" from the book his teacher read, showing the Mayflower on a churning ocean. Everyone has a role: Pablo, Kate, and Evan are Wampanoags, the people who were already on the land when the Pilgrims arrived. Michiko, Sam, and Sarah are Pilgrims from England. On each two-page spread the children are shown in their costumes opposite a picture from the teacher's book. In a preschooler's simple, straightforward voice, one young Wampanoag says she is thankful that "her new neighbors were peaceful Pilgrims looking for a new land to live in, and not mean people looking for someone to fight with." A small Pilgrim adds her thanks that "the beautiful land of Massachusetts had enough good things for everyone." There's no room for cynicism in this genuinely warm, honest book about a time that, for a while anyway, was peaceful, with people who were capable of friendly coexistence. As in companion books Halloween Day and Show & Tell Day, Anne and Lizzy Rockwell make a special day fun and understandable for the youngest celebrants. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Boats 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For the past 15 years this book has been one of my favorites to share with young children. The colorful pictures of happy bears at the helm of all different sorts of boats is fun to look at. The sentences are short and the words are simple to keep toddlers interested. It is a book that toddlers want to read over and over and one that you won't get tired of sharing with them.

My children (ages 3 and 4) loved the rhyming of Sweet Potato Pie. The story was easy for them to remember and repeat--something they love to do! Sweet Potato Pie quickly became one of our favorites!

Funny and Easy to Read 4 out of 5 stars.

It was funny, because the people in the book kept saying the same things. I liked it. It was like Cat Traps, because it was also easy to read.

Kids love it 5 out of 5 stars.

All 4 of my children have loved this book. There is something about the cadence to it that they love to repeat the words and hear it over and over again. All were "reading" it at a very young age.

A calm and winning introduction to kindergarten 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Anne Rockwell's calm "Welcome to Kindergarten" is a winning way to introduce any preschooler to the idea of what comes next in the way of schooling. Tim, a little boy about to enter kindergarten, goes to the school with his mother--he's clearly nervous and comments on how foreign everything is, and how big the furniture, halls, and classroom are. But after his teacher has had an opportunity to show him around the different classroom areas (art, science, reading, math, and so on), Tim finds that he's more than ready for kindergarten--he's positively excited about it.

Rockwell's simplistic paintings accompany concise text and they complement each other beautifully. The colors are strong and clear, the details just right, and the movement from one classroom area to another helps to mimic what an actual kindergarten school day will be like. Just right for young kiddos who may harbor a little nervousness about that all-important first day!

Editorial Review:

Join Tim as he visits his future kindergarten classroom and learns what he will be doing during his first year of school. Explore the reading, math, and art centers. Sit at the desk where he will practice writing, counting, and telling time. The classroom may look a little too big at first, but after finding out about all the fun ahead, it doesn't seem too big at all. In fact, it's just the right size.

Excellent Science Resource for Young Readers... 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Global warming is a scary topic for a children's book, but one that children need to know about. In WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING, author Anne Rockwell writes about this topic in a voice that children can understand. Ms. Rockwell explains why the ice caps are melting, what global warming is, what the greenhouse effect is, and most important of all, she tells children what they can do to help stop this from happening.

Written in a friendly, mentoring style, WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING will inform children while fostering a good attitude towards conservation and our environment. Illustrated with cute, but educational, pictures from talented artist Paul Meisel, WHY ARE THE ICE CAPS MELTING takes children on a journey that will affect them the rest of their lives. After all, we all share this planet, and will for the rest of our lives.

Kudos to Ms. Rockwell for tackling such a tough subject and breaking it down to make it easily understandable to our most important audience! This book is an excellent resource, one that can easily be used to teach children basic science concepts about global warming.

Editorial Review:

The earth is getting hotter, and not just in the summer.

The climate of your own hometown is changing.

But why is this happening, and can we stop it?
