Best Val-Day Book In My Class 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Okay, teachers, you know most Valentines Day books out there are pretty much all the same. This one is not your normal drivel. The children in this book are making valentines for Michiko, whom we infer has moved to Japan. Ms. Rockwell does not insult our intelligence by telling us this right out at the beginning; the reader picks up on this. The super illustrations, done by Lizzy Rockwell (what a talented family!), ingeniously portray each student's valentine on the left page, and on the facing page, shows the memory of Michiko that prompted the valentine's theme. For example, Pablo makes a fish for a Valentine. The text says,"Will you be mine?" You have to look at the facing page to understand that Pablo made a fish valentine because his memory of Michiko centers around the fun they had at a pet store, looking at the fish tank.

My kindergartners loved this book. It portrays a multiculturally diverse classroom with grace and warmth.

P.S. Another "Not your normal Valentines Day book" is "Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink". That one's entertaining and my students loved it but it centers around a trick played by the central character that causes conflict. Plus, my students surreptitiously start reciting "Your feet really stink" behind my back. Rockwell's book is more in line with the loving aspect of Valentines Day.

Editorial Review:

There's lots to love about Valentine's Day, and Mrs. Madoff's class is ready to celebrate. Everyone is making valentines for their friend Michiko in Japan. Jessica writes a poem, Charlie draws an airplane, and Eveline uses lace and lots of shiny stickers. No matter how far apart Michiko and her friends are, making valentines can bring them together!

This is a highly disturbing children's book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Let me summarize, since I had this as a young boy.

A rich old man is attacked by thieves who dismember him and stuff his remains into a chimney in his castle.

He haunts the castle for many years until young Toby the tinker (a boy who can fix anything and fears nothing,) decides to spend the night in the haunted castle.

Toby starts a fire, and throughout the night, pieces of the old man fall out of the fireplace (one leg, the other, the torso, the head...)

Far be it from me to ruin the book for you, but suffice it to say: this is a weird book to give your developing child.

Editorial Review:

Fearless Toby the tinker repairs a ghost and reaps the reward.

Editorial Review:

The story of revolution leaderToussaint L'Ouverture of St. Domingue (now Haiti).

The island now known as Haiti was once a French colony called St. Domingue, where white plantation owners forced hundreds of thousands of African slaves to farm sugar cane. Toussaint L'Ouverture was one of those slaves . . . but not for long. The day would come when L'Ouverture would lead his island's slaves into a revolution for freedom, and his efforts would influence the course of world history.

The Toolbox - a great read for those obsessed with tools 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book for my 2 1/2 year old son for Christmas and he really loves it. He is obsessed with tools and this book shows various tools with simple language but explains the function of the tools. The only downside is that it is a little outdated...for example, the picture of drill is a manual drill that no one uses any longer.

Perfect for My Little Handyman 5 out of 5 stars.

My four-year-old, a tool fanatic, loved this book. Simple illustrations and words label several tools from a boy's father's toolbox and clearly describe their basic uses. My son "reads" it over and over again.

Editorial Review:

Look inside this well-loved toolbox—there is so much to discover! It holds strong wrenches that turn, pliers that pinch, and sandpaper that smoothes. There are nails, screws, and a hammer. A toolbox is a treasure trove for curious young builders.

When they’re not running to explore their own tool collections, children will be glued to this book, exploring the shapes, names, and useful jobs of common hand tools. Anne and Harlow Rockwell’s preschool classic still shines with a well-crafted simplicity that speaks to the desire young children feel to make something uniquely their own.

Thanksgiving Day 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Thanksgiving Day, by Anne Rockwell, conveys the story of Thanksgiving through colorful pictures and historical facts. The story itself is being told by Charlie, a student in Mrs. Madoff's class. Charlie and his classmates have put on a Thanksgiving Day play. The play has helped the students learn about the events and the people from that "first" Thanksgiving. I really like this book. Any reader would enjoy the brightly illustrated pictures and the lessons being taught. Halloween Day is another good example of Anne Rockwell and Lizzy Rockwell's ability to portray historical facts through an enjoyable story with the use of vivid illustrations.

Editorial Review:

Thanksgiving is almost Here!

It's time for Mrs. Madoff's class to put on the Thanksgiving play. Charlie is the ship called the Mayflower, Sarah is a Pilgrim, and Eveline is Chief Massasoit. Everyone has a role to play and a reason to be thankful for the special things that made the first feast possible. The story of the first Thanksgiving is one we'll never forget -- especially when we have friends and family to celebrate it with year after year.

Pre K Teacher 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read this book to my class for Mothers Day. We visit Mrs Madoffs class as we have just about every holiday. (I want to be in her class, she is so nice)! The children discuss the different ways that they will celebrate the holiday, making breakfast, snuggling, and various other ways. The children were asked to bring in a button for class. The children used the button to make a tissue paper flower as a gift. The book gives step by step directions. As always Anne deals with the difficulties of the holday with a student who was celebrating with her grandmother as her mother had passed away. The craft is really cute, the children and mothers spent lots of time picking out their button and had little stories about why they chose that button. Mom's didn't know what the button was for and were so surprised that it was to make a flower. Really great!

Editorial Review:

Each child in Mrs. Madoff's class knows just how to celebrate Mother's Day. Jessica and her mom go hiking together. Sam helps pick out a new kitchen table. Sarah and her dad take Grandma to her favorite restaurant. And when a surprise visitor comes to class, the kids learn how to make a handmade gift that's straight from the heart. Here's a loving tribute to all the mothers, grandmothers, and mothers-to-be everywhere, perfect for sharing any day of the year.

Florentine history for young adults 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book, very well written and with nice black and white drawings, suggestive of woodcuts. It describes, in accessible terms but with good technical insight, Brunelleschi's figuring out how to build the first free-standing dome since antiquity, by going to Rome to study the Pantheon (the only such dome to survive from classical times). It is historically very reliable, and reads very well. This book should be brought back into print; it is a classic and it would sell, especially after adults have read the recent which tells the same story to an older audience.
