What do surgeons, swimmers, chefs, and cowboys all have in common? Curious children discover the answer in this informational book about hats as Ron Roy presents photographs of children wearing various hats, engaging readers with requests to identify specific aspects of each one. Although Roy gives no indication of his information sources, photographer Rosemarie Hausherr does at the end of the book. Concerning issues of gender and religion, Roy exhibits inclusiveness and sensitivity. He selects "western hat" over the more traditional "cowboy hat," explaining that both men and women wear them; and describes a dressy hat as one people wear on special occasions such as to church or synagogue. Hausherr aslo demonstrates cultural awareness by using photographs of people from various racial backgrounds, both male and female, even including a child with Down syndrome. Although the black and white photographs are most likely due to year of publication, color would enhance visual appeal. Nevertheless, the photographs compliment and enhance the flow of text nicely. A great book, engaging the minds of both young listeners and elementary readers.
