Two boys' review: A fun pirate story with only a couple minor flaws... 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Both of my young sons love pirate stories and they took to this one quickly, although the book needed some parental editing.

Two problems:

Jeremy Jacob takes off without telling his parents -- I reinforced with my kids that Jeremy shouldn't leave with the pirates without asking his mother or father.

The author perpetuates an unhealthy attitude towards children eating vegetables, with Jeremy happily announcing that he won't have to eat either spinach or carrots aboard the pirate ship.

One positive:

Jeremy Jacob comes to realize that living like as a pirate means there isn't someone to read him bedtime stories or hold him close when he is scared.

Overall, this is a fun bedtime book but be careful you're not teaching your children bad behaviors and habits along the way.

Editorial Review:

When Braid Beard's pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk--who wouldn't go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate. He throws his food across the table and his manners to the wind. He hollers like thunder and laughs off bedtime. It's the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. Until he finds out what pirates don't do--no reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in. . . . Maybe being a pirate isn't so great after all.
Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon teams up with witty storyteller Melinda Long for a hilarious look at the finer points of pirate life.

Editorial Review:

Welcome to Jon Scieszka's Trucktown, a brand-new preschool/kindergarten series that will come in more shapes, sizes, and formats than you can shake a bumper at. It's a world where all the characters are trucks, all the stories are action driven, and boys and girls can imagine themselves in all their crazy, loud, funny, creative, excited, full-throttle glory! It's a world where we work at play, and we play at work... and no one's afraid to get dirty or be LOUD! And it all kicks off with Smash! Crash! best friends Jack and Dan are spending their day doing what they do best--smashing and crashing! All the while a strange shadow is following them around every corner... Who is this new addition to Trucktown? What does she want? Rhythmic, rollicking text will get kids' motors running and horns honking with each refrain! This is a book that begs to be read again and again!

Meet the Trucktown Gang

Jack Truck
Jack is a prankster action hero! He is active, rowdy, messy, loud and goofy. He is the fastest truck and the best-at-truck-sports truck. Jack's work is to play. And he plays, and plays, and plays, and plays.

Dump Truck Dan
Dan is Jack Truck's best friend. He is one strong truck and loves to show off that strength, whether its pushing rocks, loading up dirt, or getting into trouble with Jack.

Payloader Pete
Pete is Dan's brother, and he is loud, rough, tough and competitive! But he's also the most loyal friend a truck could have. As he puts it "I would take a punch in the grill for those guys."

Cement Mixer Melvin
"I'm worried!" and "I don't want to" are two of Melvin's favorite phrases. He is a loveable worrier, which is good because he LOVES to worry.

Gabriella Garbage Truck
Gabriella knows everyone and everything. She's a social butterfly and maybe bit of a know-it-all, but still a blast to have around. She can always talk about what's going on! And talk... and talk... and...

Monster Truck Max
Max is everything you would expect a monster truck to be. Especially ACTIVE! He is oversized, jacked up, and nitro-boosted to the MAX! He's always getting his wild self into trouble and it's a good thing he's got good friends like Jack and Dan to help him along the way.

Grader Kat
Sensitive, creative, and mature, Grader Kat is the most artistic truck around. Don't believe it? Check out her tire treads! Her creative ideas and experimental nature make her a great addition to any adventure.

Wrecker Rosie
Rosie is big. Rosie is a wrecker. Rosie is a great big wrecker sweet and clumsy and who lives to bounce about wrecking things. But beneath all that noise and wreckage there is also a very big heart.

Tow Truck Ted
Tow Truck Ted is smart--really smart. He knows more about truck mechanics, repair, history, and even truck mythology than anybody else. But watch out, he's also got a sly side and he's always got a plan.

Izzy Ice Cream Truck
Izzy is an ice cream truck. He sells ice cream and only ice cream. And he says only one thing--"Do you want ice cream? Do you want ice cream? Do you want ice cream?"

Hook and Ladder Lucy and Pumper Pat
These fire truck twins are responsible, do-gooder citizens. Practically always together, they love doing things the right way. Lucy thinks they are being responsible. Jack and Dan think they’re a little bossy.

Big Rig
Big Rig is a bully. He's a tailgating, horn blasting, black exhaust spewing, license expired, outlaw. And those might be the nicest things you could say about him. The best thing to do with this guy is steer clear.

Rescue Rita
Rita is Lucy and Pat's little sister. And the biggest tag-a-long... She just wants to join in on all.

terrible book! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

this book is AWFUL. this kid david wreaks havoc in his parent's life and is just told "NO" throughout the book. then, in the end, when he breaks his mother's favorite vase after being told not to play baseball in the house, he gets a big hug from someone we never see and is told that he is loved. it's a PATHETIC book. the only good thing about the book is that clearly the author grew up in a nice house because the furniture is nice in the book.

SPANISH LANGUAGE VERSION 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I didn't pay attention and purchased the Spanish version. Nothing wrong with that, except I don't speak Spanish. I'm keeping it to avoid the hassle and am re-ordering... just letting the rest of you know. :)Other than that, I'd give it 5 stars... so, technically, I'm rating Amazon's marketing.

Editorial Review:

When author and artist David Shannon was five years old, he wrote a semi-autobiographical story of a little kid who broke all his mother's rules. He chewed with his mouth open (and full of food), he jumped on the furniture, and he broke his mother's vase! As a result, all David ever heard his mother say was "No, David!" Here is his story.

This book changed our lives! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We read these books when my son was about 18 months. He was resisting diaper changes and nap time. After reading this books he would say, "Jeffrey PU" and let me change him. The end of the book shows the mom cuddling with David with David's eyes closed. We talked about how he was happy and sleeping. We would read it at bed time and nap time and my son would be okay going in his crib with no fuss after reading it. Now my son is 2 1/2 and David has come to the rescue again. In "David goes to school" there is a page where David needs to go to the bathroom. This simple book with wild illustrations helped my son pee in the potty for the first time. Super. These books are great!

Editorial Review:

Oh, David! What have you done now?! Whether it's time to get dressed, eat breakfast, or go to sleep, this youngster can always find a way to make a little trouble. But no matter what David does, his mother truly loves him--and children will, too. With the same irresistible humor and vibrant style as his award-winning No, David! books, David Shannon takes us back to the "early years" of his most beloved character. Perfect for beginning readers as well as for the youngest children and parents to share, the Diaper David books are sure to delight families everywhere.

i didn't know this book until i found out my 4 yrs old looks wierd after reading this book from her preshool. she loves to read books and never gotten any problems by any of books she has ever read, but this one. she is fear and change a different person totally afterward. i can't find out what she was so worry about until a week after she asked. "what is my color?" then, she refused to talk and still keep guiet for a hour or more, look she is worry.

Never conform! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for kids (maybe even adults!). The illustrations are amazing, and the message is so important. My daughter and I had a great conversation after reading this book about listening to one's own inner voice. David Shannon is great at being writing in a lighthearted tone even when getting a "heavy" message like this across.

Editorial Review:

Category: Making Friends"What we have here is a bad case of stripes. One of the worst I've ever seen!"Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don't like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she's so worried that she's about to break out in...a bad case of stripes!"Shannon's story is a good poke in the eye of conformity...and his empathetic, vivid artwork keeps perfect pace with the tale."-Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Two boys' review: A disappointing sequel to a fun pirate book 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This isn't a pirate book. This is a babysitting book with a guest appearance by Captain Braid Beard and his crew of seven.

What made the first book interesting -- Jeremy Jacob experiencing the highs and lows of life on a pirate ship -- is exactly why this book never takes off. The pirates come to Jeremy's house and there's just not much interesting to do or see there.

My sons -- ages 5 and 4 -- love to read about pirates during their bedtime. They'll ask me to reread their favorites but this book never garnered a second request.

In summary, I recommend "How I Became a Pirate" but advise you to leave this sequel on the shelf.

Editorial Review:

When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey!

This hilarious companion to How I Became a Pirate reveals that minding the nursery can be even more terrifying than walking the plank--especially if you're a pirate.

Cute series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I got these books (I also purchased the other about David) for my two year old son whose name is David. He thinks it's pretty neat these books have his name in them.

It's Not His Fault! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

David's always in trouble, whether he pulls the cat's tail-he says she likes it- or sticks his finger in the cake-leaving evidence all over his face.

This book is just as cute as the other 'No, David' books. Once again, David Shannon helps every child- and adult- understand David's world with his simple, yet beautiful pictures and simple phrases. My boys love it and I do, too.

Editorial Review:

When David gets in trouble, he always says, "No! It's not my fault! I didn't mean to! It was an accident!" Whatever the situation, David has a good excuse. And no matter what he's done "wrong," it's never really his fault. Soon, though, David realizes that making excuses makes him feel bad, and saying he's sorry makes him feel better. Once again, David Shannon entertains us with David's mischievous antics and a lighthearted story that is sure to leave kids (and parents) laughing.

There is something captivating about this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My nine month old absolutely LOVES this book! It's the craziest thing; he literally squeals with excitement when I read it to him and tries to turn the pages in anticipation of what's next. I end up reading it over and over (which is not difficult since the whole thing has about ten words) because he gets very upset when it ends. Yes, it is utterly simplistic, but it is also surprisingly captivating for little ones. To those who criticize: I am sure this book is meant for those with very short attention spans and little knowledge of the English language. It's a BABY book!

Editorial Review:

Oops! Did somebody make a mess?! Join David as he finds himself in a few sticky situations, and learn his five favorite words along the way. From throwing a ball to riding a tricycle to taking a bath, David sometimes has a little too much fun. But he knows there's nothing better than cuddling with Mama at the end of a busy and exciting day. With the same irresistible humor and vibrant style as his award-winning No, David! books, David Shannon takes us back to the "early years" of his most beloved character. The Diaper David Collection 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I gave my 2 and a half year old niece these books (Oh David, Oops, and David Smells board books along with the little David doll) for Christmas. She wanted me to read them to her over and over that day. Just got a message from my sister-in-law saying that my niece was up first thing the next day "reading" the books to herself over and over. Great set to get little ones interested in books and words.

We LOVE David! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son's favorite book by far.....we've read it hundreds of times & he still reaches for this one first! This book in the Diaper David series is the thickest & best in quality of the three.

Editorial Review:

Hey! What's that smell?! Join David as he discovers the five senses: touch, hear, see, smell, and taste. From petting the dog to banging on a drum, David knows how to have a good time. My daughter loves David! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is only 2.5, and she loves this book. We checked it out from the library after she fell in love with "No, David." She has been asking for it since we returned it to the library. She memorized the words on each page, and could "read" it to her friend.

To those who complain that this book is poorly drawn, that is the point! It is based on a book that David Shannon wrote when he was a little boy. It is supposed to look like a kid drew it. My daughter likes David's teeth, and his round head. She even kisses him sometimes. It's cute!

I also don't think this book encourages bad behavior. David doesn't get away with what he is doing. If you talk to your kids about what they are reading, this should not be an issue. For example, you could discuss WHY the things David is doing are bad.

I think kids can relate to David because he is not perfect.

Editorial Review:

As David zips through his school, he discovers hat his least-favorite word, "no", is often spoken here: "NO, DAVID!" "No Yelling!" No pushing!" "No running in the halls!" This lighthearted companion to the Caldecott Honor book, NO, DAVID! Is an entertaining, laugh-out-loud romp from the beginning of class to the end of the day.
