Beautiful, loving story, exceptional paintings. 5 out of 5 stars.

As a homeschooling parent I read this book with my children as we were doing a unit study on sound.

Whales have a the ability to make a much higher pitched sound than the human ear can hear. It is their song, or communicating which facinates us.

This book offers magnificent and realistic paintings which will delight your eyes as well as your heart.

The grandmother tells of the whales, is it real or fantasy? All the while a great uncle so blatently informs the little girl what whales were used for in the past.

As we know, whales have much larger brains then ours- who is to say they would not sing for a kind gesture from a loving stranger?

This book has found a special place in our home library, I hope it will for you or someone you love as well.

Editorial Review:

Lilly listens to her grandmother's tales of whales and longs to hear the creatures' powerful songs for herself. This eloquent work celebrates the extraordinary relationship between a young girl and the whales that do eventually sing for her. Full color.

Editorial Review:

Mary Elizabeth, a.k.a. Lola, is accustomed to playing the starring role in the fascinating production that is her life. Her pottery-making single mom and bratty twin sisters are merely bit players in Lola's dramatic existence. But all this changes when she is forced to move from her beloved Manhattan to the boring suburbs of New Jersey. According to Lola, "living in the suburbs is like being dead, only with cable TV and pizza delivery." The worst part is that someone has already snagged the coveted Drama Queen of Suburbia title--and that someone is Carla Santini. Carla, who is "sophisticated, beautiful, and radiates confidence the way a towering inferno radiates heat," isn't about to let anyone take away her hard-earned crown. Undaunted, Lola tries out for and wins the lead in the school play, a role much desired by Carla. In retaliation, Carla makes the entire student body give Lola the silent treatment (and in addition scores tickets to a sold-out concert of Lola's favorite rock band). Can Lola crash the concert, crush Carla, and still have enough energy to wow everyone in the school production of Pygmalion? It's all in a day's work for Lola, Teenage Drama Queen.

With Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Dyan Sheldon has written a classic good girl vs. bad girl story and a rib-tickling romp through the petty kingdom (or in this case, queen-dom) of small-town high school popularity politics. The wide-open ending will have young drama-queens-in-training eagerly searching the shelves for the next installment of Lola's adventures. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

I adore 4 out of 5 stars.

I know what your thinking!
Another teenage fluff in a book.

This is not it!
I borrowed it from a friend, read it...and kept crying at my pillow at the ending.
This is the sequel of the first book "You can never go home again"
Read that one before this one though...Its better.
Not that you won't understand it more.
But its just for you to appreaciate these two books.

B.J is a ghost.
Angel a teenager who lives in B.J's room...against his will.

Intreguied?
B.J died mysteriously years ago...in this book Angel digs out his past seeking answers, while romance is brewing...soon Angel understands more and more about her secret friend.
Is he as bad as he seems? really?

You simply must read this book! It's bittersweet, funny, and a complete treasure!
I already ordered this one used...because it seems that's the only way I'd be getting it.
Ah well.
Its worth it.

The only reason I marked it at 4 is because I thought it should have gone longer than that...
There was so many things I wanted to happen...or even mentioned but It did not sadly.
It made me want to see more of B.J and Angel's relationship...But I reached the ending too soon...
Thats my only disappointment.
But other than that...I love this book!

Editorial Review:

224 pp. Pub: 9/95. *****Angel is fed up with living in a haunted house. The resident ghost, infuriating and good-looking, BJ, has not grown less iritating with time. He criticizes Angel's boyfriends, reads her diary, and likes her best friend. But as Angel digs into the past and discovers the truth about BJ's death in 1959, she realizes that she misunderstood BJ, and that only she can help him find peace. Original.

You Can Never Go Home Again 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Not so long ago I read this book, and I liked it so much. That book was about a girl named Angel. Her family was going through a divorce, and she had to move with her mother and brother to another home. But a ghost occupied the home. The ghost's name was BJ. He was a 19-year-old boy, and had been killed many years ago by a motorcycle accident after he robbed a store. Only two people in the world could see him, Angel and her brother.
That book showed me how people with opposite characters could help each other. Both Angel and BJ felt so lonely and they helped each other a lot. BJ helped Angel to forget her past life and try to build new one. Angel helped BJ to feel the world again and try to have fun and not be so lonely. While I read that book I always felt that BJ was real, because he acted like a real person, thought like a real person, and at the same time I understood that BJ was a ghost because people couldn't see him. I felt really sorry for him because I think it is really hard to be a ghost, and I don't understand why he was still living in this world. I think something held him here and I'll try to figure out about that when I'll read the second book about that story, called Save The Last Dance For Me.
I recommend this book for all people who love ghost stories and who love romantic stories because this book is really romantic too.

Editorial Review:

Loss, thrills and romance befall Angel all at once after her parents split up, and she has to live in a crummy old house inhabited by BJ, a rebellious teenaged ghost. Original.

A beautiful way to introduce a child to American history. 5 out of 5 stars.

We found this story of discovery a beautiful and intelligent way to begin to introduce our child to the history of Native Americans and the world as it was. The illustrations are absolutely breathtaking and our son is taken with the descriptive yet understandable language used by the author. What a magnificent book!

Wonderful illustrations/story, great children's book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Under the Moon is one of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I have seen, and I worked in a children's bookstore for two years! The illustrations, actually oil paintings, do an excellent job supporting a beautiful story. A young girl finds an arrowhead and asks her mother if she can spend the night under the stars and the moon. The illustrations show her day-dreams that may or may not cross into reality. She envisions the buffalo and deer that roamed the land so long ago at her house as well as the Indian who dropped the arrowhead. Pay attention to the details in the clouds. Wonderful book; but not preachy or boring. Makes a great present for a 5-8 year old girl. If you like Rafe Martin I recommend this highly.

Editorial Review:

When Jenny finds an arrowhead in her backyard, she spends the rest of the day trying to imagine what the world was like long ago--when there were no cars, no towns, and no cities, but only the people, the land, and the animals. Then she falls asleep and awakens in a place more beautiful and magical than any she could have imagined. Full color.

An ingenious work of journal-told teenagedom, written through the eyes of a cynic with a sense of humor 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Almost seventeen-year-old Janet Bandry is looking forward to a relaxing summer that involves lounging on the beaches of Greece, and taking part in crazy love affairs with foreign waiters. However, just as soon as her summer begins, it is already ruined by the Mad Cow - aka her mother - who insists that if Janet wants to have new back-to-school clothes, she'll have to work for them herself by getting a...job. Which is how she ends up working at a crummy Mexican restaurant, where the owner is constantly confiscating her wages. Honestly, if it weren't for Ethan - her ultra hip co-worker - she would have quit after day one. But if she quits, he'll obviously never ask her out. As if being a wage slave weren't bad enough, everyone around Janet is in love - including her mother, who is suddenly dating Buskin' Bob, a man who confiscates Janet's hair products, and has her eating weeds. If only Janet could turn to her best friend, but, alas, Disha has fallen head-over-heels in love with a hunky Australian, and left her in the dust. No wonder Janet has been sent into orbit.

Dyan Sheldon's more publicized novels - CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN and MY PERFECT LIFE - never really struck a chord with me, in the same fashion that her PLANET JANET books have. Which is why I'm shocked that they aren't well known. Janet is one of the most hilarious teen characters to hit the young adult market in years. Her narcissistic, cynical take on her life, and the world around her is laugh-out-loud funny; while her comical family - extended relatives included - are bizarre and full of surprises that keep the reader guessing until the very last page. PLANET JANET IN ORBIT is just as good as Sheldon's first Janet tale PLANET JANET. I only hope that there are more to come. An ingenious work of journal-told teenagedom, written through the eyes of a cynic with a sense of humor.

Editorial Review:

Exams are over, love is in the air, and Janet's summer is already down the pan. Not only has her mother (The Mad Cow) got a new, right-on boyfriend with two daughters from hell, but she is expecting Janet to get a summer job! Add to that a lovesick dad, a best friend going gooey over a gorgeous Australian and a suffering, pregnant, lesbian aunt - and you have enough to send anyone into orbit. Welcome to Janet's Planet...

Courtesy of Teens Read Too 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Janet Bandry is the hilarious, awkward teenager of PLANET JANET and the sequel, PLANET JANET IN ORBIT. These two books combine together to form the fully awesome DEEP AND MEANINGFUL DIARIES FROM PLANET JANET. This book, written by the author of CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN, had me laughing from the first page to the last.

Janet's friends and family always sarcastically says Janet lives on her own weird planet. But to me, Janet seems like the everyday quirky best friend we all have or want to have. Janet is the girl with the nose ring who dyes her hair purple as a part of her year-long experimental "Dark Phase." She's also the self-centered girl who is boy crazy and doesn't understand anybody in her family (including her mother, whom she has nicknamed Mad Cow).

DEEP AND MEANINGFUL DIARIES FROM PLANET JANET follows a year of Janet's humorous life. In that time, she deals with a major fight with her best friend, develops numerous crushes, and even survives a clothing store robbery. Through it all, Janet remains strong, determined, and always with her awesome sense of humor intact.

Set in London, Janet's diary reminds of me of those from Bridget Jones and Georgia Nicolson. It contains the wonderful ramblings and hilarious insights that made both BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY and THE CONFESSIONS OF GEORGIA NICOLSON smash hits. So if you are looking for lots of laughs, then grab a copy of this book and enter into Janet's Planet!

Editorial Review:

Alison is not a wishy-washy sort of girl, on the contrary, she's a very contemporary young lady who plays the saxaphone and thinks it might be fun to drive a bus. So when the Prince at the ball turns out to be as handsome as any story-book prince -- but extremely boring -- she tells him just what she thinks of him and walks out!
This funny spoof on the traditional Cinderella theme will have wide appeal, especially for those slightly older readers looking for a lively story with a short text and easy vocabulary.
