A wonderful piece of literature, however 5 out of 5 stars.

I completely agree with most HS students that this book should be optional reading for them because HS teachers should very well know that there are many different minds that need very different kinds of reading material and exposure to variety is not always a good thing that's why you end up having reviews of books like this by some HS students who puke on it rather then have savored it like I did. My reasons for really loving this book is because of the historical/puritan life and manners I like to read about, I love human struggle and the need to understand inner feelings of character, and I like knowing about how communities deal with religious matters. Can you blame me for being such a sentimental person? Yes, the book is written at the 5th grade level, and some people still do read at that level so this may be a reason why it's survived for such a long time. In any case, don't have it on your book shelf if it's not your cup of tea; with me, it will always be a treasure.

Editorial Review:

Publicly disgraced and ostracized, Hester Prynne draws on her inner strength to emerge as a true heroine of American fiction. Arthur Dimmesdale stands as a classic study of the self-divided--trapped by the rules of society. 2 cassettes.

Misfiled classic 5 out of 5 stars.

Cracking good pirate tale hits all the high points of treachery, adventure, narrow escapes, and treasure hunting, usually misfiled in the Juvenile section.

"Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!"

See my review of the new novel Silver: My Own Tale As Written by Me with a Goodly Amount of Murder that tells more of the story behind Long John Silver.

Maybe I'll be a pirate someday! Aye? 5 out of 5 stars.

My dad and I are reading this book, and we think it's totally awesome! If you are 11 or 12, you may want to read this book with an adult, but you'll love the adventure and pirates, the treasure map and the Hispanola. I think I am going to start learning pirate lingo now, so I'll be ready if Long John shows up at my door! If you read this book you'll have to rate it a five star because of the adventure. Kids, hope you can get YOUR dad to read it with you!!

Editorial Review:

Unrivaled in literature, Stevenson's Treasure Island is among the most delightful adventure romances of all time. From young Jim Hawkins' first encounter with an old buccaneer and his tresure map to the final daring skirmish with the treacherous pirate Long JOhn Silver, this classic work enchants and fuels the imagination with beautiful illustrations.

A Grand Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

Note: Some immature Mormon has been slamming my reviews because I wrote some negative reviews of books attempting to defend the Book of Mormon.

So your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. Thanks

In my opinion, a short review is best if you haven't read the book. I always read the longer reviews afterwards.

I read this book forty years ago in college and loved it. I also saw the movie, but as one reviewer pointed out, Phileas Fogg traveled by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but never by balloon. The balloon scene was added to the movie.

Nevertheless, I loved all of Jules Verne's stories, and I highly recommend this one, whose title says it all--"Around the World in Eighty Days" on a bet that it couldn't be done.

I enjoy collecting paperback books with neat covers, and I have a couple of "Around the World in Eighty Days."

Oh, and I hope this is helpful. Read "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg," by Philip Jose Farmer. This retelling of Verne's story has Fogg going after Captain Nemo. It's great Fun. Farmer also wrote novels about Tarzan and the "Barnstormer in Oz"--very sexy.

Super Reader 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rather than being raised by apes, it is wolves that fulfill for the family role for the young boy Mowgli after he escapes being tiger snacks.

Shere Khan will continue to be his antagonist, and he will gain advice and assistance from other jungle denizens as he grows to manhood.

This also has the pretty cool heroic mongoose tale Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

Review of Jungle Book BARNES & NOBLE Version 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Since it appears that Amazon is combining the reviews for several versions of this book under one, I want to stipulate that I've read the Barnes & Nobel Classic version.

Actually comprised of 2 books, The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, this is a collection of stories surrounding the jungles of India. A central character is Mowgli - a boy left in the jungle when his parents are frightened away and who is raised by wolves. His adventures as he grows up in the jungle are intriguing, frightening, enchanting, and certainly adventurous! This is NOT Disney! The way Kipling presents this material, it is easy to suspend belief and one could believe a boy was raised amongst the animals.

There are a host of other stories in each books that have nothing whatsoever to do with Mowgli, and that is fine. A couple even take the reader out of the jungle and into the frozen north - talk about a change of scenery! Still, Kipling keeps the reader fully engaged with the lives of animals and the effects of their environment.

A book of true escapism, but certainly not "just" for adults or children. Though the language might be a little more difficult to follow for younger children, older children should be able to stretch their imagination. And adults can fully appreciate the language of Kipling, which is rich and descriptive.

A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Editorial Review:

A young reader's edition of a classic story follows the experiences of Mowgli, a young human boy who is raised by wolf foster parents and grows to respect and love the ways of the jungle before he is forced to return to the man village. Reprint.

The anthology I use to teach 17th and 18th Century philosophy 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I don't usually like anthologies and rarely teach from them -- I tend to prefer a primary text approach, partly because it allows students to see the development of ideas in their full context and because I expect philosophy students to be interested in developing their personal library of philosophy. This volume, however, is an exception and I've been using this volume for several years (and three separate editions) to teach my "History of Philosophy: 17th and 18th Century." Since I try to cover quite a bit in the course (empiricism, rationalism, social contract theory, transcendental philosophy -- in the works of Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Pascal, Berkeley, Hume, Spinoza, Leibniz, and Kant), but don't have the time to read everything by every thinker, this volume is almost perfect. It has almost everything I cover and includes both good brief introductions and fairly broad excerpts from each thinker. There is enough, at least, to illustrate the general approach and broad themes and key issues from most every thinker it includes. I've looked at a few other anthologies of Modern philosophy and they are usually either too specific (e.g. focused on 17th but not 18th century philosophy) or too broad and narrow in their coverage. This one is just right, and would be an excellent volume to get for an orientation to the basic problems of modern philosophy that sets the stage for both 19th Century continental thinkers like Hegel and Schopenhauer and Marx and Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, as well as for 20th century developments in both analytic (that picks up from Hume and to a lesser degree Kant and largely bypasses the German Idealist movement) as well as continental philosophy (in Heidegger, Sartre, etc.).

One quibble: I do wish there was more from Rousseau -- the latest volume has excerpts from the Social Contract and while that may be his most historically important work it doesn't show as clearly as some of his other works his distinctive approach to thinking -- that does not fall clearly under a rationalist or empiricist label. To give a better flavor of Rousseau I supplement this volume with Hackett's translation of the Second Discourse (On the Origins of Inequality).

Editorial Review:

The abundant selections in this anthology of medieval philosophical readings helps the reader put philosophical inquiry into context and features some of the best translations available today. The readings in this anthology represent the towering medieval thinkers-Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and William of Ockham-discussing a variety of topics, including questions on the nature of universals, the nature and essence of God, the relationship of God to time and creation, and the ability of humans to know God and creation. For anyone who wants a readable and accessible collection of metaphysical and epistemological selections from medieval philosophy.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mostly I got this book because I never owned it and do own Little Women and Jo's Boys.I want my daughter to have the trilogy.I thought it was terrible.A mere series of goody-goody character sketches with very little holding it all together. If anything, it just underscored how Jo should have accepted Teddy! They were a great pair.I did not care about these boys much and even had trouble distinguishing them from one another.Jo's Boys was much better--at least a novel, so read Little Men only to fill in the blanks.

Poor Publisher 1 out of 5 stars.

I was looking forward to having my own copy of Little Men, but the copy I received from publisher Hard Press had many grammatical and spelling errors. It did not have an appealing layout, either. I should return it for a better copy of the book which I know exist.

Gah. 1 out of 5 stars.

DOUBLE FUDGE
Judy Blume

Reviewed by Greg of Stockbridge Central School 3rd grade

This book is about Fudge. He is five years old. His older brother Peter is in 7th grade. Fudge calls him "Pete" for short. Fudge's family lives in New York.
In this story, Fudge really likes money. I mean he really likes money. His family brings him to the National Mint in Washington D.C. When they got to the gift shop Fudge's Dad saw Howie, a good friend he had not seen in a long time .The problem is Howie has two girls. Fudge and Peter have to spend all their vacation time with them .They drive them crazy!!!
I like this book because it was funny . For example, Fudge went crazy in the shoe store when his mother would not get him two pairs of shoes. I like the characters. For example, Peter picks on Fudge but he takes care of him too!!
I recommend this book to any one who likes a lot of humor.

A Wonderful Read 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This a great book to read because I remember reading it as a kid. I liked the book so much that I read it twice. There was also a dog that I used to have that kind of looked like the main character, but he was a huskey. Also, I would recommend this book to anyone.

Great Book - which I suspect is a metaphor for Jack London's inner life 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I suspect that White Fang is really a disguised tale about Jack London's inner emotional life, and particularly his childhood. I don't know too much about London, so this is only speculation, and his biography would probably give better clues, though so often biographers idealize their subjects' childhoods - and gloss over the more painful emotional dynamics.

So the dynamics I sensed, and you may know better than I how they parallel Jack London's life: White Fang (= Jack London), abused and neglected as a puppy (= Little Jack), born outside any conventionally accepting community, somewhat loved and then abandoned by his mostly-wolf mother, fully abandoned by his wolf father after his birth because of mother's behavior, raised in isolation, treated consistently cruelly by the world and became tough as nails and aloof and independent to defend himself against this cruelty (= London splitting off emotionally to keep his identity and inner strength), never unconditionally loved by anyone so he became a frustrated and angry creature, but kept his sense of himself somehow, and fought for what he believed in.

Passed around from owner to owner, treated progressively worse by each (adults and society massively failed London again and again), and used him for their sick purposes, to the point of nearly killing him, until one man finally rescues him and loves him and nurses him back to health - and teaches him the meaning of love. White Fang is then redeemed, and ultimately becomes a beloved member of a family, a hero, and a loving father of puppies of his own.

I suspected this last part of the book was Jack London's hidden fantasy for how he wanted his own life to turn out - to finally become non-emotionally isolated, loved and accepted by a family system, and essentially "normal." Didn't he instead die in his early forties, a miserable, lost and embittered alcoholic?

Editorial Review:

With an introduction from award winning K.A. Applegate, White Fang is one of London's classic tales of survival and one of his most popular stories. White Fang is part dog, part wolf, and the lone survivor of his family. In his lonely world, he soon learns to follow the law of the North--kill or be killed.

Muth's watercolors are delicate and expressive, and work beautifully in retelling this familiar story. Oh, the wanderers are poor monks, and the setting isn't European, but it's still the same story we all love.

And that's why I chose this book over Muth's other children's books. I've enjoyed his adult artwork, and the paintings in the other kids' books are, if anything, better than the ones here. I just couldn't picture my four-year-old (check the suggested age groups) getting much out of Tolstoy's three existential questions, though. Maybe your kid is a bit more advanced, but Stone Soup seems to be a better match to this pre-schooler's philosophical needs.

Editorial Review:

Three strangers, hungry and tired, pass through a war-torn village. Embittered and suspicious from the war, the people hide their food and close their windows tight. That is, until the clever strangers suggest making a soup from stones. Intrigued by the idea, everyone brings what they have until-- together, they have made a feast fit for a king! In this inspiring story about the strength people possess when they work together, Muth takes a simple, beloved tale and adds his own fresh twist.

Hugo's commentary on the death penalty 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This novel was written as an argument against the death penalty. The victim was a young, naive innocent girl caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. She was falsely charged by an overzealous prosecutor, then condemned to death for a crime that didn't even take place!

After being rescued by Quasimoto and hiding from the crowds, the King, thinking the mob wanted her hanged, ordered her death, with no knowledge or even any interest in her situation. Thus, she was murdered.

I never previously paid much attention to the debates charging that the death penalty should be abolished, nor did I understand the reasons. I must say, however, that as hard as it was for me to read this book, (I'm not experienced at reading the classics) it changed my mind and made me see the problems with the death penalty.

Editorial Review:

A complete edition of the classic novel, coinciding with the release of a major motion picture from Disney, tells the story of the hideously deformed Quasimodo and Esmeralda, the gypsy girl who depends on his courage. Reprint.
