Wonderful book for girls, 3 through 8 or so! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book is the 2nd in the "Fairy Realm" series (the first being 'The Charm Bracelet'). I read this to my girls who are 5 and 7 and they both loved it! It's easy to follow, but has elements that really challenge kids' imaginations. Even my five-year-old spent time contemplating the goings-on in this book inbetween chapters.

In the first book, the heroine, "Jesse" must save the realm from a bad person. But in this book and the subsequent ones, the challenges are in Jesse having to rise to a particular challenge rather than defeat a "bad guy". In this story, it turns out, the folks in the realm are having problems because the Queen's pet Griffins are overzealous in their guard-dog responsibilities while the Queen is away travelling and Jesse must find a way to get them back on task, while simultaneously also working through one of her own problems (she can't dance, but has to do it in a school play).

The book is about 10 chapters long, each one will only take 10 minutes or less to read. It's probably written at a 3rd or 4th grade level so a young reader could read it themselves if they are up to grinding through 100 pages or so.

I personally don't think boys beyond 6 or 7 would be thrilled with this story, but this whole series is perfect for providing a young-girl hero/role-model for the young girl readers. And also, these stories do a very good-job of introducing fairy-tale and mythic elements that kids are going to encounter all through their lives in books and movies.

Overall, a great story and well worth reading for young girls.

Enter the Realm
of delight....

Jessie is a real hero in the Realm now -- her fast thinking saved the land from disaster. She even gets to dance in midair with the beautiful flower fairies.

Now the Realm needs her again: the griffins that guard the treasure house are out of control!

And then the flower fairies follow Jessie out of the Realm. Can she protect them from the dangers of her own world?

Like syrup on a Twinkie 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 8 people found this review helpful.

OK, I'm a guy with 3 young daughters and so, but for Potter, story time is it's own kind of hell. Too sweet, too predictable. This makes Disney world look like Mordor. Give the character attention deficit and a queen who gives long boring lectures filled nevertheless with lifesaving facts, missed. Oh well, beats the heck out of Pony Pals at least - I was going nuts: "pony pony pony pony ...".

My 7 year old daughter loves the Realm however, and she's just at the level where I can foist it off on her to read. Give me instead something like Gene Wolfe's books of the New Sun where the narrator doesn't quite tell the truth of what happened and where the entire meaning of a scene can shift 3 or 4 times as you learn more. Where appointments are missed, connections lost, original dreams forgotten but new purposes found. If only this could be found in a kid's book.

Perhaps I'll try reading her Robert Penn Warren's "All the Kings's Men" and see if that sparks. But more realistically, I recommend the trilogy Juniper; Wise Child; Colman -- all by Monica Furlong. This is readable by adults and yet strikes the interests of little girls.

Enter the Realm of Adventure

Jessie's helped the magical people of the Realm to escape danger twice now -- she's a real hero to her friends there.

But now her own world is in danger. Forest fires threaten her beloved home, Blue Moon. And only the magic of the realm can help her.

My 5 and 7 year-olds both loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I read this seperately to my 5 and 7-year old girls and they both loved it. The story is simple enough for young kids to follow, with descriptive passages that are enough to create a realistic feeling to the story, but not so long to tax kids' attention spans.

The imaginative fairy-tale type elements and situations of the story are perfect for firing young kids' imaginations, but the author avoids violence, and overly suspensefull/stressful situations. It should be noted that in this first "Fairy Realm" book, unlike the others, there is actually a "bad guy" (or girl, rather). The other books involve overcoming hardships, troubles, difficult situations rather than an opposing person.

Overall, a wonderful, easy-to-read story that kids from preschool age to young-elementary school age will love (proably girls more so than boys). If I had to guess I'd say it's written at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level.

Fairy Realm series, thumbs up 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In the eyes of my 7 year old, all 5 Fairy Realm books are awesome. We checked the first one out at the library. She read it and loved it. When she realized it was a series, we jumped at the chance to purchase the rest in order. She has read each one up to #5 and loved them all. She related to the character, loved the adventures and cannot wait to dive into #6. My daughter's an avid reader and loves adventure series. Emily Rodda does a great job writing and tells an intriguing story. It pleased me that though the books are very lively, they aren't too scary for younger readers.

Enter the realm of enchantment.

Jessie returns to the magical Realm for the fifth time. The magic of the Realm has rescued her home from terrible fires, and she has saved the Realm's magical people from a wicked imposter, kept the griffin guards under control, and saved the fairy-apple trees.

Now it's Jessie's birthday, and she finds herself chasing a rainbow. She's got to get to the end before it fades, or she may never get home!

Then there are the Rainbow Fairies, who desperately need Jessie's help to find a lost magic treasure. Until it's found, they'll never get back to the secret garden.

Nice Addition to this Series 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I read nearly everything that my daughter reads (I just think it is good practice), and we both love this series. The stories are very enchanting and we like the variety. We are also both fans of the Pixie Tricks and Fairy Chronicles series. The three series are all different, and there is great variety in each.

Fairy Realm: The Unicorn is a wonderful story and a lovely addition to Ms. Rodda's series. The plot is exciting and the story moves quickly. And of course, who wouldn't love a story with unicorns in it? This is also a book that can inspire a reader to read it again and search for similar books to enjoy. I am a big fan of anything that encourages my daughter to read. We are both looking forward to the next book in this series. My daughter has also informed me that when she gets a little older, she wants to read the Dragons of Deltora series by this author. I had never mentioned those books to my daughter; I am impressed that she looked up this author on her own to discover what other books she might have written. I recommend this book to all fairy, fairy tale, and unicorn lovers including grown up ones.

In Jessie's last visit to the Fairy Realm she discovered a part of the Realm she had never seen before. And she helped the rainbow fairies find a lost treasure.

Now the Realm is in tremendous danger. And so is the human world! The evil creatures of the Outlands are planning an attack. So Jessie must make an impossible decision. Should she try to save the human world, or the Realm? She knows she can't save both. Or can she -- with the help of the powerful unicorns? But the unicorns are such secretive creatures. Can Jessie possibly convince them to help?

Fun for Young Readers 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Fairy Realm books are full of age appropriate adventure for young readers. I read them aloud to my kids at night and they devour the stories. For us older readers, the chapter one repetition is down right absurd. If you are reading the 5th book, who needs the recap? Nonetheless, Jessie's exciting trips in the magical Realm come in just the right doses for young fantasy readers.

Editorial Review:

Follow Jessie on her adventures in these three sparkling, magical tales.

The Charm Bracelet

The Flower Fairies

Jessie must protect the flower fairies when they follow her out of the Realm and into her own world!

The Third Wish

When forest fires threaten Jessie's home, only the magic of the Realm can help her!

Latest entry in a consistently good series 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've read all seven books in this series to my seven-year-old daughter (we started when she was six). This is a favorite series which has maintained its quality from the beginning.

Now that she's in second grade and her reading skills are up to speed, she's reading her favorite Fairy Realm books to herself at bedtime.

This book has the same ingredients which make the series a winner: an adventure, a problem to be solved, and plenty of fantasy fun.

Enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Every year the Realm has a great festival, called the Night of Wishes, when Queen Helena puts on the precious Star Cloak and by its magic is able to grant wishes. This year, though, there's a problem: it's the night before the festival, and Giff the elf has accidentally damaged the Cloak!

Jessie knows that to save the Night of Wishes, she must get the Star Cloak repaired by the night-dwelling star fairies of Stardust Mountain, the makers of the Cloak and the only ones who are able to fix it. She doesn't have much time -- can she save the Realm's special night?

fun Fairy Realm mystery 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The leaf she found on her dresser was actually an invitation to a party in Liralee village by her friend Patrice the palace housekeeper. Also invited are their pals Giff the Elf and Maybelle the miniature horse. Meanwhile someone is stealing items from people with everyone suspecting one of the neighbors is the thief. Jessie soon realizes that the Water Sprites are outraged because someone stole their precious Moon Stoon. Anything that floats to the Finding Pool the sprites find and now claim as theirs rather than returning it. Before troubles escalate Jessie believes she must find the purloined Moon Stone by using human, elf, and horse common sense.

The eighth Fairy realm tale is a fun mystery that targets elementary school children. The story line is fun as Jessie and her buddies only want to go to a party, but also must solve the case of the stolen items especially as the ire of the Water Sprites grows. Emily Rodda provides a fine tale starring a likable young heroine accompanied by a mythological who's who and enhanced by the terrific pictures by illustrator Raoul Vitale.

Troublesome and fun 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

[note: this review was dictated to me by my seven year old daughter who has read most of this series. Mostly her mother has been reading this series to her for a couple of years but now she's old enough to read (or re-read!) them herself. We now own the whole series.]

"I really liked when they walked on the Ribbon Road to Dally Glade to get the Sky-Mirror flower. This book in number nine in the series and it is my second favorite book in the series. My first favorite "The Third Wish" -- the third book in the series.

I think lots of girls will like this series because it is magical and there are lots of fairies, unicorns and elves."

Editorial Review:

The magical world of the Realm has a terrible problem -- a plague of mischievous, troublemaking Peskies. A wild west wind has brought the tiny creatures down from the hills in the thousands. They're making life in the Realm impossible, and eating up all the magic!

It's been hundreds of years since the last Peskie plague, and even Queen Helena doesn't know what to do. Then Jessie comes up with an answer: an old, forgotten spell that will lead her and her friends on a fascinating journey -- and straight into trouble.
