Excellent Story 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is book four in the Land of Elyon trilogy. At the end of Into The Mist we leave Yipes, Roland and Alexa heading towards the five pillars community hidden out in the sea. Yet a great evil, defeated once, has followed them and desires to make this place its new home and its dominion. Abaddon is this great evil, and is full of a vehement hatred because of his defeat and the new form he has been forced to take. Abaddon has taken a form much like a great octopus, with scales of iron and enough spite to want to destroy the whole world. Stargazer begins right where Into the Mist leaves off. The book opens with the destruction of the Warwick Beacon, with Captain Roland Warvold going down with the ship.

Alexa must face a world without the guidance and protection previously provided by the Brothers Warvold. She is in a strange place, where the rules and customs are unknown to her. Yet it is also a place of great adventure. Five stone pillars rise up out of the sea; the community living there resides on the first three. The first and shortest is for crops, the second has a freshwater lake on most of the surface, and the third is concave and has the most homes. The fourth is convex and is uninhabited, and finally, the fifth towers into the sky and the top is not known or visible to the inhabitants of the islands. They make their way from pillar to pillar by a series of rope bridges and slide down natural vines like zip-lines. And as much as Alexa would like to just explore this new place, Abaddon has informed her that he plans to destroy it, or make it his own. He is slowly eroding the fourth tower by tearing chucks from the stone, as it is the narrowest. They fear that it will topple into the third and cause a cascade effect.

Alexa is once again thrust into the middle of a great adventure, but an adventure filled with the unknown and with mystery. She must find a way to save this new place she has just discovered. For the first time, she must do great things with only the help of Yipes, her friend small in stature but great in heart and will. But the lord of Elyon has even more in store for her than she can imagine. As she proceeds to try to discover a way out of this situation, she begins to see her own life path and purpose.

Patrick Carman has been nominated for numerous book awards for this series, including winning the 2007 Lamplighter Award and the Cochecho Readers Award 2005-2006. This book lives up to that heritage or even exceeds it. So give the book a try - it is strong enough to read alone, but is also part of a great series.

Editorial Review:

A magical menace is on the loose . . . forcing Alexa to take to the seas and save a secret community located in a strange land known as the Five Stone Pillars.

Wonderful reading for the entire family! 5 out of 5 stars.

We actually listened to book #1 while on a road trip.
The family enjoyed the book so much that we have purchased all three books to add to our personal book collection. Now we are fighting over who gets to read them first!

Land of Elyon Book 1, The: The Dark Hills Divide (Land of Elyon)

by Steven Maus, author of Branchwater 4 out of 5 stars.

Patrick Carman has crafted a wonderfully charming account of a girl with a spirit that can't be contained within the walls of Bridewell. Young Alexa Daley embodies that wish which consumes children and adults alike - the wish to leave behind the dreary confines of everyday life and discover something wonderous and alive, brimming with adventure and excitement. That is exactly what Carman gives his readers; the chance to escape into the pages, and to flee the restraints of this world, and to travel with Alexa to solve the mysteries of the world.

In the realm of CS Lewis 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow... we have been big fans of Patrick Carman from the beginning of this trilogy and have enjoyed every book to follow! While my daughter, when we began this series, was definitely old enough to read on her own - we had just finished reading the Narnia series together and wanted to continue our family reading time with a similar style of writing! These books did not disappoint! In the age of Harry Potter popularity - this series features a 12 year old heroine that was a great character to relate to and look up to for our daughter. The other characters in the book are lovable and humorous and the books offer many twists and turns and suspence - even some tear jerker moments and laugh out loud scenes as well! I highly recommend this series for any family... your kids will love them, but don't miss out on them yourself! They will soon be 'classics' in their own right!

Amazing Story 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is the first book in the second trilogy set in the Land of Elyon. It can either be seen as a prequel to The Dark Hills Divide, or as a new beginning in a new saga. It really is, in part, both. For in this book Alexa Daley and Yipes from the first series are on a sea voyage with Thomas Warvold, brother to the late Rolan Warvold. This book is the tale of Roland and Thomas and their journey from being orphans in a house on the hill, to being respective leaders and adventurers in their own right.

Our three adventurers are on a voyage. Yet Thomas has not told Alexa or Yipes where they are going. But he does settle in and tell them the story of how he got there to be the captain of the Warvick Beacon, and also the tale of his brother's and his own adventures when they were younger than Alexa is now. The brother's journey goes from being little more than slave labor to journeys under the world, over mountains and into a magical land where you do not grow old.

All the while, the reader knows that they are being told this story, because Thomas had a task in the story for Alexa and Yipes, a task related to his past and a task that must be faced. Evil has been released in the land of Elyon, and a battle between good and evil is approaching Elyon and Abaddon. It is a battle that once again young Alexa and her friend Yipes will have to decide to choose, either bravery and face the challenge at hand, or ...

There are many great facets of Carman's writings. First is his smooth fluid prose. Second is the wonderful word pictures he creates in the reader's mind, and third, his stories center around normal people being called on to stretch their limits. It is not the classic story of the giant battle between good and evil. It is about small battles with people fighting to do right and learning from their own pasts. His stories have life lessons that can be applicable to almost any reader, yet written in such a way that he never preaches at the reader. The battles are between good and evil without it being a cosmic battle for the whole universe, the whole planet or in this case the land of Elyon.

This book is a great read for the reader of any age, and since it is the first in a new trilogy, it will leave you wanting and eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Gripping conclusion. 5 out of 5 stars.

Patrick Carman's THE TENTH CITY also adds to a series, 'The Land of Elyon', as it presents the final battle between evil Victor and his leader and little Alexa, who must overcome the Lonely Sea and rescue a friend before she can save the world. Elementary to middle school leisure readers who have enjoyed prior books in the Elyon series will relish this gripping conclusion.

the tenth city is an excitng book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Tenth City by Patrick Carman is a magical adventure that includes giants, evil ogres, talking animals and some magical places that Alexa has never even thought existed. I would recommend this book to all ages that like good books. This dazzling story leads off with Alexa and her friends stuck on a boat(The Warick Beacon) chasing evil ogres who have captured one of Alexa's closest, Yipes. There journey to the Tenth City suddenly stops when there is a horrible storm and Alexa and her friends are forced to go on land. Alexa's hears that her father has stayed in Bridewell while everyone else leaved because they heard of that the ogres were coming. On Alexas adventure she will have to try and save yipes, find her dad, and discover the truth about the Tenth City.
Alexa is a skinny, young thirteen year old girl who doesn't succeed in sports. In this book she is expected to save her friends, and most importantly save the land of Elyon. On her adventure she is always ready. At any time the evil Victor Grindall can come and kill her and her friends. Since she is so slender and thin she wont have a chance against the ogres that are easily three times her size. thats where Armon comes in. Armon being a ten foot giant with great strength has a chance against the giants. His job is to protect Alexa from Grindall and the ogres. On his adventure he will have to hide from the black swarm which kills the giants and turn them into blood sucking ogres.Alexa will have to defeat Grindall, blood sucking ogres, the black swarm and the trouble of being turned into a ogre. Will they work together and defeat the ogres or will they let the land of Elyon fall?
The Tenth City is a wonderful, magical book that includes drama, action and adventure. So if you like action books I would recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

The Land of Elyon has begun to fail, poisoned by the evil that creeps across the Dark Hills and into Bridewell. As she moves toward a thrilling conclusion, Alexa must find a way to overcome the Lonely Sea, rescue Yipes from the clutches of Victor Grindall, and unlock the mystery of the Tenth City. But can she find the answers she needs in time to save The Land of Elyon?

Editorial Review:

Elyon is a land of dark hills, enchanted forests, and great walls that connect and encircle the cities of Lathbury, Turlock, Lunenburg, and Bridewell like spokes in a wagon wheel. On her annual summer trips to Bridewell with her father, the mayor of Lathbury, Alexa Daley spends much of her time dreaming of escape. Having lived within the walls all of her 12 years, she wants nothing more than to explore the uncharted wilderness beyond. But, the walls are heavily guarded, and frightening legends suggest that forests and hills are no place for a child--especially a young girl. When a mysterious conversation and an unfortunate accident put Alexa within reach of a way outside the wall, she must decide--heed the warnings of her elders, or satisfy her curiosity and unravel the mysteries of Elyon.

Told from the perspective of its smart, brave, and adventurous heroine, The Dark Hills Divide invites readers on a spectacular and mysterious quest that will appeal to boys, girls, and fans of both fiction and fantasy. Patrick Carman is a natural storyteller, and his delightful debut is full of mysterious plots, hidden passageways, and all manner of dastardly, hilarious, and noble characters. Perfect for fans of J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, and Cornelia Funke, The Dark Hills Divide is so compulsively readable that kids (and their parents) will be clamoring for the second book in the proposed trilogy, Beyond the Valley of Thorns, due in 2005. --Daphne Durham

Great Beginning 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Famous Children's author Madeliene L'Engle once stated that writing children's literature was harder than writing for adults because children ask more questions; children just do not accept what an author writes the way most adults will. Her statements have always stuck with me and since doing a children's literature course a few years back, I have continued to read children's and teen fiction regularly. Usually I look for books that have a lot of buzz about them, have then been nominated for a Newbury, or Mr. Christie, American Library Association or here in Canada a Governor General's Literary Award (more commonly know as the GG's.). If so I try to pick it up and give it a read. Because of that I tend to browse the children's and teen sections at Chapters when I happen to be in a store.

The cover of this book captured my attention and almost compelled me to purchase it. The representation of our Heroine Alexa is a very striking image. I purchased this book when it came out nearly 2 years ago and yet only just recently picked it up to read. I now regret that I did not read it sooner. In part, I hesitated reading the book because the cover art was so powerful and cast such a spell upon me, I feared the text not living up to the story I had begin to build in my imagination. Those fears were unfounded.

The Story is set in a walled kingdom. A Kingdom built like 3 spokes on a wheel. Alexa is from Lathbury, the south western spoke, from the hub of Bridewell. This walled Kingdom was built by the Warvold after his extensive travels in the wild mysterious world. He built walls around the central town of Bridewell, and walled roads out to the three surrounding towns of Lunenburg, Turlock and Lathbury. Yet upon the eve of his death, he hints to Alexa that the walls, once thought to be the salvation of the towns and their civilization, he now considers to be a mistake. Alexa begins an adventure shortly after the Warvold's death that will affect her and this kingdom for time to come.

Yet the Warvold's death has caused a society once stable and thriving to start to spin out of control. Alexa sneaks outside the wall and meets a dwarf and a talking wolf and is summoned to a council, the severity and importance of which not even the participants can realize. Can Alexa fufill a calling upon her life that the Warvold foresaw and that some others are trying to help happen and others wish to thwart?

This is one of those great books, originally written for children, that can captivate an audience of any age. Carman has an extremely mature voice and he writes in a manner of a master wordsmith. Carman only conceived of this series in his mid thirties; it is an extremely well- rounded and crafted world - a pleasure to visit, and I plan to re-enter the land of Elyon again and again.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is book two in the Land of Elyon trilogy and the third book by Carman I have read set in Elyon. Carman creates an amazing, believable, alternate world. As I read more and more of Carman's writing the more I enjoy and appreciate his skills. Elyon is the Semetic for God or Most High. It has been used in fiction by Ted Dekker as a name for God allegorically, and for Carman it is the name of the world or land. As I progress through his books, the more similar I see that his writings are to Lewis's Narnia. As such, these are great stories for the whole family.

This book takes place a year after The Dark Hills Divide. A year ago beloved leader Thomas Warvold passed away, the plan to capture Bridewell have been foiled and the walls connecting the towns of Bridewell, Ainsworth, Lathbury and Turlock have come down. Now a year later it appears Warvold had plans for Alexa Daley, and others. Alexa is delivered a letter and told she has a mission to perform and she cannot tell anyone she is leaving. She must leave another letter prepared for her father and be on her way to yet another adventure.

Alexa joins forces again with Yipes the dwarf, Odessa the wolf, Squire the Hawk and Murphy the squirrel. They have been entrusted into the hands and guidance of John Christopher a former convict, who will guide them through the wild, and along the way they join forces with a Giant named Armon. They are charged with the task of sneaking into a well-guarded land, freeing a captive and overthrowing the Grindall.

However, whenever great tasks are attempted, a price must be paid, and in this adventure the price will be very high. You must join Alexa and the team that has been gathered around her as she travels across the land of Elyon to fulfill the request of her beloved Warvold. But many challenges and surprises are in store for our small band of adventurers.

Just a forewarning though - this book ends with a cliff-hanger, or should I say, we at the bottom of the cliff salivating for the next book!

Editorial Review:

When last we saw Alexa Daley, she had defeated a threat in her homeland and was sailing with Roland Warvold across the Lonely Sea. She had no idea what adventures awaited her...until now.

After a tragic attack by an evil force, Alexa and her friend Yipes are stranded in a strange community known as The Five Pillars. Each pillar of rock has its own secrects...and its own challenges. As darkeness descends, Alexa must risk everything to defeat it--even if it means taking to the skies

As he did in his bestselling Land of Elyon trilogy, Patrick Carman has created an

exciting tale full of heart, humor, and heroism, starring one of the great characters in current fantasy literature.
