Editorial Review:

From the author of more than a dozen New York Times best sellers and his son, comes the first installment of a brand-new fantasy trilogy written just for young readers...

Barely a teen and already guarding a secret that could jeopardize his young life, Maimun is marked for death. With the help of a mysterious stranger, the boy escapes his village and flees out to sea, stowing away on the pirate hunting ship, Sea Sprite, where he comes across a most unlikely ally: the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden. With a half-demon determined to destroy him, and a crew of sailors resentful of the trouble he's caused, Maimun must find the courage to prove his worth, both to his friends and to himself.

Nearly two decades ago, R.A. Salvatore introduced the world to Drizzt D'Urden in a series that has since become a fantasy classic and a consistent presence on best seller lists. Now, for the first time, Salvatore partners with his son Geno to craft a brand-new story just for young readers, featuring a cameo of the most beloved fantasy character of all time.

For young readers seeking the next great fantasy saga or for long-time fans who can't miss any installment in the Drizzt saga, this book delivers all the action, intrigue, and magic you've come to expect from the Salvatore name.

Editorial Review:

Did you know dragons hate sweet flavors? Or that the Draconic word for ugly is "nurh"? Or that the best place to find a green dragon is behind a waterfall? Any dragon buff worth his or her salt needs to know the ins and outs of these frightful, spectacular creatures. And Sindri Suncatcher, the wizard apprentice narrator of A Practical Guide to Dragons is just the man for the job. Although he forbids potential readers from opening the book, the insatiably curious will ignore the warning and begin reading Sindri's "scrolls" to learn what the sometimes foolishly fearless kender (small, mischievous hobbit-like man) has learned about dragons.

This gorgeously illustrated book by Lisa Trumbauer will provide hours of absorbed entertainment for humans in search of the nittiest grittiest details about dragons, from anatomy and physiology to combat techniques to society to language to the many types of dragons. Packed with details, it also is infused with sly humor throughout, with many allusions to Sindri's adventures with dragons, as well as to his colorful family (the book is dedicated to Aunt Moonbeam). --Emilie Coulter

A practical guide to crunch without numbers 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

So I lucked out yesterday and found a copy of this at a local big box store. I was quite surprised as normally, books like this don't appear there. So I grabbed it. I knew beforehand that this was not a normal D&D book. It didn't have stat blocks, detailed sections on ability, powers or tactics of the creatures inside it.

What it does have is tons of in character ways of explaining powers, abilty and tactics of the various monsters inside. I thought it was best used as a manual a character could purchase from a wizard or guild to provide them info that they could actually get. Crafty DMs should then be able to convert it over to some kind of knowledge boosting bonus dependant on the type of creature. It's full of tons of flavor text and basics that would work perfectly for lower level adventurers, especially if the players are not old hard vets of the game.

The illustrations inside are a lot of reprints from the Monster Manual, but when there is something new, it's well done. It's fits with a good introductory to monsters and even if it is made for kids or young readers, it fits for the older readers to.

This story sucked me into its grip! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What a fun read! Full of tongue-in-cheek humor, slapstick humor and laugh-out-loud humor, this book had me giggling at every turn.

Pauley gives a new twist to the traditional vampire genre with a delightfully witty main character (Mina) who has to choose whether she wants to be a vampire like her parents or remain human. Complete with teen angst, love interests (both human and vampire-wanna-be), best friend issues, and other teen situations, this book was a great read.

I especially love that Kimberly mentioned Stephenie Meyer on the first page! ha

Editorial Review:

Mina Hamilton's parents want her dead. (Or undead to be precise.) They're vampires, and like it or not, Mina must decide whether to become a vampire herself. But Mina's more interested in hanging out with best friend Serena and trying to catch the eye of the too-hot-for-high-school Nathan Able than in the vampire training classes she's being forced to take. How's a girl supposed to find the perfect prom date and pass third-year French when her mom and dad are breathing down her neck--literally?

Editorial Review:

R.D. Henham returns with another Practical Guide to Dragons adventure!

Could a "good" dragon really be evil?

Witness to the kidnapping of her younger siblings' eggs, young bronze dragon Simle has good reason to think that all humans are evil. Tatelyn, whose brother was killed by a dragon who was supposed to be good, also has good reason to distrust even metallic dragons.

But when thrown together on a mission to recover their magical powers, Tatelyn and Simle realize that they have more in common than they ever imagined.

"A Practical Guide to Dragonriding" is the sequel to the New York Times best seller "A Practical Guide to Dragons," and is a helpful companion to any Dungeons & Dragons player's collection. Sindri Suncatcher treats us again to more lore on dragons, except this time, how to hatch, raise, and train dragons in hopes of becoming a dragonrider. It features some original art to the book, and takes some others from various D&D books. A great book for both for little kids, or it can be a help with planning campaigns if you play D&D. A great little book to read; a must have for any fantasy lover.

Great for ANY age 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love dragons, so picking up this book was a no-brainer--even though I'm a long way out of the "target age group" (never mind how far). Like all the great quest stories, this book has great characters, mysteries, dangers, and unexpected heroes. Though a super-fast read for me, I was never bored. In fact, as it progressed, I didn't want to put it down. Like with Harry Potter, it doesn't matter what age you are--you will love this book!

Editorial Review:

For fans of The New York Times best-selling A Practical Guide to Dragons, a new series of fantasy fiction focusing on the power of dragonkind.

The Dragon Codices chronicle adventures with each of ten dragons of Krynn. From the fiery, evil red dragon to the playful copper, each dragon's tale is unique. Sindri Suncatcher, narrator of A Practical Guide to Dragons, shared these tales from his travels with library scribe R.D. Henham.

Mudd lives a peaceful life in his small town, tinkering with the mill and any mechanical devices that he can find. But his peaceful life soon changes when, out of nowhere, a red dragon attacks, burning the town and kidnapping Shemnara, the village seer. Only one clue is left behind--a cryptic note telling Mudd, "Seek the silver dragon."
