Editorial Review:

Jack Morgan has had it rough. He was orphaned at three, then lost his Uncle Virgil ten years later. But the plucky fourteen-year-old didn’t know what rough was until he met Draycos, sole survivor of an advance force of alien refugees that had been brutally ambushed over the world where Jack was in hiding from the authorities. The K’da poet-warrior needed to bond with a host, or he would die; the reformed boy thief and con artist needed a friend, someone he could depend on as he tried to clear his name. Since then they’ve formed a unique team, determined to find and expose those responsible for the slaughter of Draycos’s team.

In the months since fate threw them together, they’ve been through a lot. But when Jack tries to hack the computer in an office of the notorious Malison Ring, their quest nearly ends in the jaws of that mercenary organization’s trap.

Luckily, Alison Kayna, a girl Jack had worked with as a reluctant mercenary for another outfit, comes to his rescue. Evading pursuit, they escape to the primitive world of Rho Scorvi, where she’s planned a rendezvous with friends.

But at the edge of Rho Scorvi’s hundred-mile-wide forest, they make a shocking discovery: traveling with a group of the planet’s native Erassvas is a small lost colony of Draycos's own race, the K'da. But unlike Draycos’s people, these K’da--known as Phookas--are slow, lethargic, and unintelligent. When the Malison Ring tracks the Essenay to Rho Scorvi, Jack realizes that unless he and Draycos and a reluctant Alison can lead the Phookas to safety in the forest, these unfortunate creatures will become the latest victims of the genocide that threatens to wipe out their entire race.

Jack has already been a thief, a soldier, and a slave. Now he must become a herdsman, protecting the Phookas from danger as they travel deep into the unexplored forest. But even more importantly, he must protect from the mercenaries and Alison the dark secret of the herd and Jack's poet-warrior ally. Only if they succeed do they stand a chance of surviving Rho Scorvi to continue their quest . . .

Great kids books 5 out of 5 stars.

We love Zahn's other books so when a young adult series came out we had to read it. It is a simple read, good for young readers, yet it has a great story with some surprise turns. I would recommend this series to a young reader that likes fantasy and wants another good read.

A fun read for all ages 5 out of 5 stars.

If you're interested enough in this book to visit this page, then I can't help but recommend it to you -- not just the first book but the entire series.
As an adult, I have enjoyed Timothy Zahn's science-fiction novels and had some reservations about trying his young-adult series. I was beyond pleasantly surprised. Taken as a whole, this was one of the most fun series I've read in a long time.
So try the first book, Dragon and Thief. If you like it only a little, then don't stop there. You'll love the whole series, whether you're 12 or 22 or 72.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen-year-old orphan Jack Morgan is hiding out.

In a spaceship.

Falsely accused of a crime, he pilots his Uncle Virgil's spaceship to a remote and uninhabited planet hoping to escape capture. When another ship crashes after a fierce battle, Jack rescues the sole survivor-- a K'da warrior names Draycos. It turns out Draycos can help Jack clear his name. All they have to do is team up. No problem, right?

Until Jack learns that Draycos is not your average alien.

Just all right 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I did enjoy the action in this novel, but the characters weren't compelling enough for me to care dearly about them. The only thing I found truly *real* were Ven's feelings for his family, and they were relegated to far away, long ago for too much of the story.

Ven himself seemed to morph too much to seem a real character. I felt like she didn't have a good handle on him, so I didn't either.

Editorial Review:

Charles Magnus Ven Polypheme—known as Ven—is the youngest son of a long line of famous shipwrights. He dreams not of building ships, but of sailing them to far-off lands where magic thrives. Ven gets his chance when he is chosen to direct the Inspection of his family’s latest ship—and sets sail on the journey of a lifetime.

Attacked by fire pirates, lost at sea and near death, Ven is rescued by a passing ship on its way to the Island of Serendair. Thankful to be alive, little does Ven know that the pirate attack—and his subsequent rescue—may not have been an accident. Shadowy figures are hunting for the famed Floating Island, the only source of the mystical Water of Life. They think Ven can lead them to this treasure and will stop at nothing to get it—even murder….

CREEPY TALES 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Yet more great stories from literary master David Lubar. Plenty of short
sharp shocks to give kids the shivers as Halloween approaches!

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My kids and I loved this book. It is full of great short stories. It would be a great book for a reluctant reader because the stories are so short. The reader can have many short, entertaining reading sessions without the chance of getting bored. While camping this past weekend my son retold many of stories from this book while we were sitting around the campfire. They really are great spooky campfire stories!

Editorial Review:

Watch out for the road weenies!
A town is overrun by road weenies--a.k.a. joggers--who never smile. A girl thinks she's too old for Halloween...until she finds a special pair of gloves. A boy takes a shortcut to an unexpected place. A mummy takes his revenge, one little piece at a time.... Welcome to the weird and wacky world of award-winning storyteller and master of the macabre, David Lubar. These thirty-five tales ranging from the silly and offbeat to flat-out horrifying are just right for reading alone or for telling aloud in the dark. As an added bonus at the end of the book, David answers the question most frequently asked of writers with a behind-the-scenes look at the various ways he got the ideas for the stories in this collection. Don't be a weenie. Read these stories. If you dare!

Editorial Review:

Dragon and Thief, the first novel in the Dragonback series, was named an American Library Association Best Book For Young Adults. The second novel, Dragon and Soldier is another fast-paced, compulsively readable SF adventure featuring an odd couple of reluctant partners on an unusual quest.

Draycos, a golden-scaled draconic K'da poet-warrior, was on a scout fleet ship when it was attacked, with him the lone survivor. Forced to find a new symbiotic humanoid host, he found Jack Morgan. Jack has been on his own, making his way by shipping interstellar cargo on the ship he's inherited from his Uncle Virgil, a con-man and thief who met with a fatal accident. Draycos has vowed to uncover those behind a vast conspiracy to wipe out his people, while Jack is determined to find out who framed him for a crime he didn't commit. Virgil, who survives as "Uncle Virge" in the ship's computer, is against their plan. But Draycos once saved Jack's life, so Jack feels an obligation to this strange creature who can slip onto the boy's skin, pressing against it like a living tattoo. Knowing that mercenaries were involved in the ambush that killed Draycos's fleet, Jack enlists in a mercenary outfit that practically enslaves adolescent recruits.

But the soldier's life isn't exactly what Jack had bargained for, especially when a mysterious girl is recruited into his group. Strange things are happening, and people and events are not always as they seem.

Great read, but, Are all her endings bad or is it just me? 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I just need to have it out of my chest: I've read The Chrestomanci books and Howl's, and when I read this I confirmed my impression: Diana Wynne Jones writes excellent page turners (intriguing, fun, full of mysteries, cleverness and character development), but her endings are invariably weak. Action always gets rushed up and kind of confusing (Main characters having to go from one place to another and doing extraordinary efforts, evildoers popping out, characters discovering things about themselves, etc.)and then... They just take too many pages to end or end abruptly. In the case of "Deep secret" I think the last chapter is completely unnecessary. However, it was a great read, as are all other books I've read by this author.

Editorial Review:

Fourteen-year-old Jack Morgan has gone through a lot since he met Draycos, a dragon-like K’da warrior he saved when everyone else in Draycos’ scout fleet was killed in an ambush. Ever since, Jack and Draycos, who slips onto Jack’s back like a living tattoo, have been trying to track down the people responsible for the massacre.

On the planet Brum-a-dum Jack gets hired to work on a plantation owned by a Brummga whose family has ties to mercenary groups. One of those groups might have been involved in the ambush.

Jack’s a terrific thief, and managed to do a passable imitation of a mercenary, but those talents don’t help him much on the plantation. Here, he’s just one of many slaves, with little hope of finding the information he came for. But that’s not his biggest problem now. The slavemaster knows Jack’s no ordinary slave, and has his eye on him. Jack, who’s been in tight spots before, knows that can only mean trouble.

On the heavily fortified grounds of the alien plantation, there’s no way to get out, and nobody to help him. Nobody, that is, except Draycos. Jack can only hope that’s enough.

Inappropriate Age Level 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I think the age level for this book should be much higher. It totally freaked out my 9 year old. In fact, I found it uncomfortably creepy and I'm an adult. Stories about children choking on hot dogs and not getting out of "heaven" unless they hit a homerun in an otherwise endless baseball game, predators on the internet luring children to sneak out of their homes at night to meet them, children "mind-melded" into eating live bugs in order to have friends, ...

My child brought this book home from the school library. I strongly suggest parents think twice before allowing their child to read this.

Editorial Review:

A boy discovers the answer to one of the great urban mysteries: why are pigeons always pooping in parks? A second-grade class learns why they should always be nice to their math teacher….An ancient predator uses the internet to search out its prey… A young girl and her little brother escape a campfire weenie only to encounter something even more terrifying: a troupe of Girl Scouts singing campfire songs.

For this, his third collection of warped and creepy “weenie” tales, critically-acclaimed author and master of the macabre David Lubar traveled deep into the shadowy corners of his mind, looking for new ways to amuse and terrify his readers. And in the tradition of In the Land of the Lawn Weenies and Invasion of the Road Weenies, he reveals the inspiration behind each of the thirty-five stories at the end of the book.

A four generation read aloud treat 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

My father heard these stories as a child. He read them to me. I read them to my kids and my grandkids. The vocabulary, the cadences, the varied plots and the sheer magic of these tales is timeless. The poems at the beginning of each chapter are related to the hours. Kids insist that you read them too. Pyle always sees to it that bullies, evil magicians, cheaters and older nasty siblings get their comeuppance. Little ones enjoy that aspect. Great archaic words are dusted off along with long disused similies and metaphores. It's the kind of book that comes to mind when you meet a bright eyed new child who has read everything else or seen everything else. At age 70 I still keep a copy in my bed's head board. Rap, tap, tap he knocked at the door.

Editorial Review:

Famous and influential as a preeminent illustrator, Howard Pyle was also a gifted writer beloved by millions — young and old — for his endearing and enchanting fairy tales. The Wonder Clock is a delightful, magical collection of whimsical stories: twenty-four stories for twenty-four hours. And each a timeless masterpiece. Peopled with jolly kings and queens, lovely princesses and evil witches, sly foxes and mischievous ravens, ogres and giants, dashing princes and nasty dragons, these are old fashioned fairly tales in the best and most beautiful sense that can be enjoyed by readers of any age.

This edition also includes Pyle’s dazzling illustrations.
