A four generation read aloud treat 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

My father heard these stories as a child. He read them to me. I read them to my kids and my grandkids. The vocabulary, the cadences, the varied plots and the sheer magic of these tales is timeless. The poems at the beginning of each chapter are related to the hours. Kids insist that you read them too. Pyle always sees to it that bullies, evil magicians, cheaters and older nasty siblings get their comeuppance. Little ones enjoy that aspect. Great archaic words are dusted off along with long disused similies and metaphores. It's the kind of book that comes to mind when you meet a bright eyed new child who has read everything else or seen everything else. At age 70 I still keep a copy in my bed's head board. Rap, tap, tap he knocked at the door.

Editorial Review:

Famous and influential as a preeminent illustrator, Howard Pyle was also a gifted writer beloved by millions — young and old — for his endearing and enchanting fairy tales. The Wonder Clock is a delightful, magical collection of whimsical stories: twenty-four stories for twenty-four hours. And each a timeless masterpiece. Peopled with jolly kings and queens, lovely princesses and evil witches, sly foxes and mischievous ravens, ogres and giants, dashing princes and nasty dragons, these are old fashioned fairly tales in the best and most beautiful sense that can be enjoyed by readers of any age.

This edition also includes Pyle’s dazzling illustrations.

Lubar fans sure to Flip over his new novel 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Anyone who remembers being a kid will recall the joys of discovering a cool book. David Lubar remembers childhood so well that he's made a specialty of writing just that sort of book for kids to discover. In Flip, twins Ryan and Taylor stumble across a cache of alien discs that contain the personalities of legendary humans from throughout history. For Ryan it's a blessed escape from the confusion of ordinary life, but for Taylor it means twice the bother as she tries to keep her brother out of trouble. Lubar shares valuable lessons about the difficulties of youth, and it's not just kids that are his intended audience. Want to discover a really cool book even if you're all grown up? Any of Lubar's books will do the trick, but Flip and Dunk are my favorites.

Editorial Review:

If you could become anyone in the world, who would you be?

Did you ever wish you could be anyone else but who you are? Twins Ryan and Taylor do it all the time. Now their dream is about to come true. They've discovered mysterious alien disks that allow they to "flip"--to become legendary heroes from the past.

But who?

Chance Fortune in the Shadow Zone 5 out of 5 stars.

"Shane Berryhill surpasses his power-packed first book, delivering more cool thrills, clever twists and great characters in a world of wildly imaginative dangers. There is plenty here for fans of the caped and cowled, and any who enjoy a smart action-suspense tale brimming with sci-fi/ fantasy elements and a dash of humor."

THE GRAVITY KEEPER

"I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy based book that takes place in a school setting. It is about a group of super powered teens who, while getting transported back to their school, are lost in the shadow zone. The shadow zone is an alternate dimension where the shadow prince reigns supreme, taking members from small gangs and turning them into his army of goons. Fast paced and not for the faint of heart. I give this 9 out of 10 stars."

Adequate Entertainment 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The author has an elegant prose style and the characters are amusing enough to sustain a reader's interest throughout the moderate length of the book. The plot is well-paced and centers on the adventures of Faris Nallaneen, a young woman who has been sent to Greenlaw College by her uncle who is ruling her kingdom until she comes of age. But a larger destiny and surprising perils await Faris.

I'm afraid I must condemn this book with such faint praises, because while it is well written it just didn't click. The author was uncertain in her setting--bits and pieces of the real world intruded, seeming less real than the fantasy landscapes. The heroine did not give the impression of any emotional depth. Comparisons to Hogwarts and Harry Potter are inevitable, and this work suffers by the comparison. Rowling might be a sloppy writer, with less elegance, but her prose is less self-conscious, more exuberant and playful, and Harry is made real to us.

Editorial Review:

Teenager Faris Nallaneen is the heir to the small northern dukedom of Galazon. Too young still to claim her title, her despotic Uncle Brinker has ruled in her place. Now he demands she be sent to Greenlaw College. For her benefit he insists. To keep me out of the way, more like it!

But Greenlaw is not just any school-as Faris and her new best friend Jane discover. At Greenlaw students major in . . . magic.

But it's not all fun and games. When Faris makes an enemy of classmate Menary of Aravill, life could get downright . . . deadly.

Why? 3 out of 5 stars.

Robert Jordan's "The Great Hunt" is a great book, undeniably, and as this book is simply the second half of it, it must be as well. However, I can't see any point in buying this, or its partner (the first half of "The Great Hunt," titled "The Hunt Begins"). Granted that the original book was a bit big and bulky, why buy two books that are merely the halves of one? They will cost significantly more. The pacing and flow of the books cannot help but to be skewed by the division. There is no upside to the deal that I can see. Again, I highly recommend the story; it's an excellent example of Jordan at his best. However, just buy the original, save yourself some money, and enjoy the book in its entirety, the way it was meant to be read.

Editorial Review:

In this second part of the tale after The Hunt Begins, Rand al'Thor-- reluctantly drawn into the quest to recover the Horn of Valere--must face something even more frightening that the Myrddraal and Trollocs: his own true identity.

WARNING 5 out of 5 stars.

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) is the original first book in the Wheel Of Time series. It is an excellent book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in an enormous fantasy series.

This book is merely the FIRST HALF of The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1), if you already own The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) DO NOT buy this book. Why it was ever released is a mystery to me, someone is probably trying to make more money from the series.

If you're a fan of the series, please use the above link to get to the REAL book, ignore this one.

The Dark Side of Nowhere

Although I enjoy a variety of books I have never enjoyed any sci-fi stories until I read The Dark Side of Nowhere. This novel was suspenseful, interesting, and allowed teens to relate easily to its characters. Its plot keeps your attention on end throughout the whole story. The characters are all different and have many of the same problems teenagers today have.
The main character is Jason, and he is a sixteen year old troubled teen. He absolutely hates his life because it is so dull in his hometown Belington. He is often trying to make problems just to start something new. One day, his friend suspiciously dies of an appendix burst and no one even knows why. Jason notices his family is acting exceptionally suspicious when none of them cry at his funeral and they even rush it a bit. He also finds that his school janitor Grant may be more than he seems when he gives him a mysterious bi bi gun that's worn on his wrist. Then, the plot thickens as he and his new girlfriend Paula finds pictures that look exactly like his deceased friend in old town, except they are from a long time ago. Old town is where the Belington was originally located but it had to be evacuated for unknown reasons. Jason soon finds that he is not the only one Grant has stirred up. It comes to be, that all the teens that attend his church are all involved in this strange phenomenon.
Jason was easy to relate to because he goes through many things that all young people go through. He has problems with his family, girls, and just finding out who he really is. He soon finds himself being somewhat of the leader of all of his confused peers and receives a strong hold on all of them. He takes the intuitive and as their leader and demands respect and answers to all of the strange things going on. At one point Jason finally has everything he has ever wanted, but then reality sets in and with one big slit everything is taken away.
The Dark Side of Nowhere was a thrilling novel with excellent characters and a fulfilling plot. The author knew exactly where he was going with his story and who he wanted to reach. He challenges you to look outside the ordinary and let your imagination fly. His work was one of a kind and takes you to a whole new experience. If you should enjoy this book and author I would recommend The Silver Bullet, another one of his suspenseful stories.

Editorial Review:

Jason is having a bad day. The kind of day when you just don't feel like yourself. Only for Jason, it's not just a feeling. He really isn't himself.

Not any more.

Who is he? That's the problem. Jason isn't sure. And it's not just him. Everyone in town is acting weird. His friends. His parents. Everyone. Billington is usually such a normal town. As Jason is about to discover, nothing will ever be normal again.
