Wrong book. 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

The advertised book is "Batman: Legacy." However, the synopsis, and both customer reviews, are for an earlier graphic novel, entitled "Batman: Contagion." The aforementioned plague is released, confronted and eventually cured in "Contagion" and in "Legacy" the source is traced.

Not as choppy as Contagion but still has its flaws 4 out of 5 stars.

I'll try to review this without spoiling too much. This is basically the sequel to the Contagion Storyline. Apparently the cure found by Azrael in Contagion only makes the virus dormant and eventually mutates it into an even more deadly strain. The villain(I'm sure by looking at the cover you know who it is) is looking to spread even more viruses around the world including Gotham City. It's up to Batman, Nightwing, and Robin(Huntress steps in towards the end)to travel around the world and stop the bad guys from releasing the upgraded virus. The good thing about this book is that the story does not constantly shift from one subplot to another like Contagion. However it does have its weaknesses. After rereading it several times I still can't figure out Catwoman's role in the story. Basically she was captured and held at the villain's stronghold where he was planning his attacks. She escapes only to never be seen again in the story. Not only that, DC Comics makes it even stranger by not printing the whole story. Instead they print a couple pictures and some captions in an attempt to summarize it. Catwoman's appearance had no relevance at all. The only reason I can think why they put her in the story at the beginning was to show us the "wheel of plagues." But any reader would have figured out how the viruses were created because the wheel was reintroduced later on in the story. Overall it was still a good read. Maybe I read into it too much but I think Chuck Dixon was already teasing a Nightwing/Huntress love story. At one point she says to Nightwing: "Boys and their toys." Earlier on Nightwing tells Robin that he and Huntress are good at the "sneaky" stuff. I'm sure Dixon would have done a much better job if he was writing the Nightwing/Huntress story instead of Devin. This book is worth picking up if you can manage to find a copy. I managed to get one on Ebay for just $15. They should reprint this book considering they decided to the same to Contagion.

My first Huntress 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I was so angry with DC when the Crisis killed off Helena Wayne. She was my favorite character, and since I'd grown up wishing I was Batman's daughter... While I enjoy Helena Bertinelli, I am constantly wishing she was the original Huntress. I still miss her.

Bring her back DC. There's room for alternate Earths!

A great TPB 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This TPB features some of the best Huntress stories, from her debut origin story which explains how and why the daughter of Batman and Catwoman became the Huntress to her 7 page backup series in Wonder Woman, where she teamed up with Power Girl and Robin and fought classic villains like Solomon Grundy, the Thinker, and of course the Joker. Along the way, Helena Wayne falls in love with Harry Sims, has an emotional reunion with Dick Grayson and Alfred Beegle, and even avenges her mother's honor when she fights the nasty Lionmane. Paul Levitz does a masterful job, doing more in 7 pages than most writers do in 23, while the art team, consisting primarily of that rhyming pair Joe Staton and Bob Layton, do a great job of walking the fine line between gritty realism and cartoony drawings, finding the perfect balance. Love their splash pages featuring a demonic-looking Joker and huge snowflakes as Helena looks out her window. Highly recommend!

terrible 1 out of 5 stars.

OK, I'm just not a big fan of The BatMan series (Not to be confused with Bruce Timm's work. It's not bad, but nothing to write home about. The idea of transferring this material to the comics was a marketing ploy and little attempt was made to expand, or at least augment the t.v. series. After the first issue, I gave up. The art it uninspired as are the stories.

"I win again. I always win" 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Batman: Dark Knight Dynasty is a great read for any Batman fan looking for something different. This is an Elseworlds tale, meaning that its events have absolutely no effect/impact on mainstream continuity. The story features three generations of the Wayne family who must don a bat-costume to thwart the machinations of the immortal Vandal Savage. One tale takes place during the Crusades, another takes place in present time (although it's not quite the Bruce Wayne we know), and the final arc throws readers into the distant future where humans co-exist alongside talking monkeys. The stories also feature re-imagined versions of Catwoman and the Scarecrow.

Each chapter is presented in its own distinctive artwork, from the beautifully painted "Dark Past" to the digitally coloured "Dark Present" to the semi-sketchy "Dark Future." Vandal Savage is a wonderful foe, and definitely earns his place as one of DC's elite villains; how do you stop a madman that can regenerate destroyed flesh and survive a freefall from space? Each "Bat-man" (and Bat-woman) gives the fight all they've got - and sometimes even that isn't enough.

Dark Knight Dynasty, due to its Elseworlds status, is a relatively obscure title that'll probably be passed over by most fans. But do yourself a favour and get a copy of this stand-alone story, it's well-worth the effort.

Editorial Review:

Three heroes, centuries apart, pick up the mantle of the Dark Knight to battle the immortal menace of Vandal Savage. This sweeping epic moves from the 14th century to the far future in three distinctively illustrated chapters.

Not just for kids! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I remember these stories came out while Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee's "Hush" (Batman: Hush, Vol. 1, Batman: Hush, Vol. 2) was still gracing the pages of Batman. A few years later, and I actually remember this one (and Ed Brubaker's phenomenal work on Detective Comics) a little more fondly. At the time, of course, I was drawn in by all the hype surrounding "Hush," but it managed to whet my appetite for more quality Batman stories. What I didn't realize was that Ty Templeton and Dan Slott had apparently been writing/illustrating some of the best for years.

I got the first issue of this series as a Free Comic Book Day promotion. I hadn't really planned on actually reading it at first. (It was made for kids, right?) It wasn't until I read an extremely positive review of the issue that I decided to crack it open. I immediately felt like a total idiot for doubting it would be good. After all, Batman: The Animated Series is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. It rarely talked down to its audience, making it just as acceptable to adults as it was suitable for kids. The stories were never as simple as they seemed, and they managed to work with strong thematic elements and well-developed characters. The comics based on this series followed suit.

One of the things that impressed me most with this set of stories was the fact that it managed to tell a multi-issue story arc while making each entry a standalone tale. At present, decompressed storytelling is the norm. Many writers seem to be writing trade paperback-length stories that just happen to be cut up into smaller portions. It was refreshing to be able to pick up one issue and feel satisfied. Even better, it made me want to read more of the series. Also, this book isn't bound by the DC Comics continuity of the time. (For instance, Barbara Gordon is still Batgirl.) Anyone could pick this series up with a minimal understanding of Batman and be able to enjoy it with no problems.

Unfortunately, I feel that good all-ages comics are lacking. It's not to say that they don't exist, but all the major titles are now being written for people who have been reading comics for years. It's hard to find series that are suitable for new readers. (The Marvel Adventures line is admirable. Now they just need to lower the prices on single issues and get them back in grocery and drug stores.) That's one reason why I was heartbroken when I heard that this series had been canceled. I just wish DC would allow Templeton and Slott to work on another continuity-free Batman series. (That seems unlikely to happen, since The Batman Strikes is the current all-ages Batman title. I hear it's good, but I'm just not a big fan of The Batman.)

Could DC, at the very least, put the collections of the '90s Batman Adventures and Gotham Adventures comics back in print?

Fans of this should also check out Templeton and Slott's Spider-Man/Human Torch: I'm With Stupid.

Story and Writing: C+, Art and Visuals: A 4 out of 5 stars.

Wow, the writing was ridiculously bad. This is supposed to be Batman vs. Zombies (by the writer of 30 Days of Night, which I like), but instead of being scary or suspenseful I actually laughed out loud at how bad the writing was. Batman's dialogue and internal thoughts were completely out of character, and he comes off like a whiny child. Instead of being a detective he basically just punches things throughout the entire book. It was funny in a bad way. Shame on you, Editor! You're supposed to do some editing, right?

Just to warn you, Batman has a jet pack and flies around every where in this book. Apparently, he's got a button that he can press to retract his cape to show the jet pack. That's weird. It was campy, and so, not scary. Also, he just kept punching things mindlessly. No sense of dread or suspense at all. The kept dialogue kept making me laugh. Batman sounded like an illiterate high school student. Steve Niles really just can't write. Just like in the 30 Days of Night series, he can come up with a decent story, but is really insufficient with the actual writing itself.

On the other hand, the art is beautiful to look at. I'm a big fan of Scott Hampton. His art is gorgeous, and Jose Villarrubia's coloring really sets the tone for the story. The art was the initial reason that I bought the book in the first place. Too bad that the writing was so, so bad. Still, if you're a fan of eitheer Scott Hampton or Jose Villabrrubia, it's worth picking up - but only if you can get it cheap.

Really an awesome book! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have a little Batman flying around your house, you definitely need this book! It's a synopsis of the movie, Batman Begins, and basically tells the story in just a few pages. It's really quite fun just pushing the Batman key because it says, "I'm Batman" in this really cool sounding voice. Pretty fun stuff there! Anyway, this book is very well loved in this house and I'm quite tickled to have found one. Now we're off to finding Superman....

Highly recommend this book - don't even think about it, just buy it!
