Brokeback Batman 2 out of 5 stars.

PLEASE!!! So mediocre, just a lot of whining and pining. Loeb was great with Long Halloween, etc. But this is drivel. Gets a second star for the art.

Great Start To One of My Favorite Series 4 out of 5 stars.

Superman and Batman is there a better pairing in comics? I don't think so and this is exactly why I think it. Superman and Batman are just perfect foils for each other. Batman the paranoid pessimist, Superman the over trusting optimist. I could go on but, I'm not going to the two just fit together. The story is solid with several different characters from across the board heroes and villains both making appearances throughout. Art isn't the best you will ever see but, it's not too bad. I recommand to anyone who likes either of the characters.

Excellent First Volume of the Superman/Batman Series 5 out of 5 stars.

Illustrated by Ed McGuinness and written by Jeph Loeb, this volume collects the first six issues of the Superman/Batman comic book. This book is like a throwback to the team-ups of yesteryear such as World's Finest. Highly enjoyable!

Batman discovers something strange on the bottom of Gotham Bay which leads him to a powerful teenage girl bent on destroying Gotham City. Soon she'll capture the attention of Superman, Wonder Woman, and even Darkseid and his Female Furies.

More like a lead-in towards things to come 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Since its inception, the Superman/Batman series has had it's up's and down's, and in this installment, writer Alan Burnett gets his turn on the title. This time around, Superman and Batman are headed to Apokolips to take on Darkseid and his minions, with ramifications that lead into the Death of the New Gods mini-series, Countdown, and of course, Final Crisis. Yes, it's a long road to these mega-events indeed, and while Burnett manages to provide a thorough and sometimes entertaining narrative, the story as a whole just comes off as more of a lead-in to the aforementioned events than anything else. That being said, Torment is a lot better than the past few installments to come before it, so fans are lible to get more enjoyment out of this too. Dustin Nguyen provides some nice pencil work to boot; all of which adds up to Torment being worth a look if you're a fan of either character or are following the road to Final Crisis.

Editorial Review:

Comics most iconic characters come together in this hardcover collection written by Alan Burnett, producer of acclaimed animated series including BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, THE BATMAN and more. This volume presents an epic tale that takes the Dark Knight and Superman from the streets of Gotham to the outer reaches of Apokolips in a quest that pits them against the terrifying galactic villain Darkseid, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and more!

Fabulous Artwork 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Paul Pope really brings Batman alive in his depiction of Batman 100 years after his origin. Pope's artwork almost jumps off the page as he has a way of depicting a stunning sense of energy even in still shots with his ink brush. The feel is raw and gritty, just as Batman should be. In fact, you'll see about the coolest idea for the batmobile ever. The artwork isn't the only great thing about this graphic novel though. The story takes Batman back to his roots as a detective, which is how Batman should be portrayed--a man who also happens to be a hero. In this two-fisted story, Batman gets shot, chased by dogs and dragged through the mud as he is trying to get to the bottom of a mysterious exchange between federal agents and a known terrorist organization. If you're a real Batman fan, I definitely recommend that you give this a try.

Editorial Review:

Visionary writer/artist Paul Pope presents a futuristic mystery of epic proportions set in a dark, dystopian world devoid of privacy and filled with government conspiracies, psychic police, holographic caller ID and absolutely no room for "secret identities."

In Gotham City, 2039, a federal agent is murdered and a contingent of Washington's top agents is hot on the suspect's trail. The Batman, a forgotten icon from the past, is wanted for the murder. Amid the chaos Gotham City Police Detective Gordon, grandson of the former commissioner, discovers that the man they are chasing shouldn't exist at all.

Eh... 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 10 people found this review helpful.

this is the best dini could do? i'm a big fan of his television work, so i had high expectations for this collection. i found it to be a near-complete disappointment. these stories didn't do a thing for me. i like the idea of self-contained stories in each issue, and some of the things dini's doing with the villains is somewhat interesting, but this book isn't doing it for me. the opening chapter is by far the strongest, but it has the benefit of being drawn by jh williams, who is an a-list artist. the rest of the art is third-rate. it tells the story well enough, but there's nothing worth really looking at besides the first chapter and the covers by simone bianchi, who does a nice job. i'm sure i would have liked the book better if the whole thing was drawn by williams, but i'm sure the art could only do so much to elevate the writing. and i feel like the first chapter probably would have been just as drab as the rest if it was drawn by don kramer, but taking it as a whole this book was a colossal disappointment.

Paul Dini, the Emmy Award-winning writer and producer of Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League, joins with J.H. Williams III, the acclaimed artist of the Eisner Award-winning series PROMETHEA, and others for this all-new collection of mystery stories that will test the skills of the World's Greatest Detective!

The Dark Knight must face the Riddler, the Penguin and Poison Ivy as well as brand-new villains while trying to solve crimes. Prepare for twists, turns and betrayals every step of the way as Batman is even forced to forge alliances with his enemies to crack these cases.

Just the way they would really be. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A long time fan of Batman (from the days of the original 80 page giants)I never really cared for his portrayal when accompanied by Superman. DC has finally gotten them together in a realistic way. The art is wonderful and the storyline is a fine arc that eventually takes us all into the crossover mania of Identity Crisis (which I did like). This is not always accessible for little kids, but nothing to shy away from if you've got 'em.

Very enjoyable and a good example of why DC is the best.

A good beginning but a bad end 3 out of 5 stars.

Like the title, the book begins really interesting, but then appear a lot of stupid characters and they doesn't explain in an scientific way, the book is sort of dissapointing, the only good thing is that the drawing is great.

Brutal 2 out of 5 stars.

I found the storyline ridiculous. Hard for me to finish this one. I liked Volume 2 better.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am really disappointed with this serie of Batman War. You don't have the thrill of the writing of a Jeph Loeb or a Greg Rucka. You see Batman endlessly running from one point of the city to another with a lot of cross over characters. This is confusion not a tale. It seems the authors want to place as much characters as possible in this serie just for commercial reasons. Also it reminds me of the No Man's Land period in worse. These books are to be avoided.

Hold on there 5 out of 5 stars.

I was never initially a Batman fan and have always been skeptical of the overall basis of his becoming, but seeing a volume with the entire batfamily gave me the impression that it might actually be a worth reading. Buying this was one of the better decisions I've ever made. It updated me in the recent happenings in the Batman universe and left me wanting for more. Although the relationships between all of them seemed to be awkward and stiff, you can plainly see the emotions expressed by each character as they desperately run around Gotham, trying to reassemble order (most especially Oracle, who is left completely frustrated by her screens). A must-have for any Batman, Robin, Birds of Prey, or Nightwing fans out there.

Wagner has me hooked 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For me, with this second entry in the Dark Moon Rising series of Batman novels, Matt Wagner joins my list of the best Batman writers in the past 5-10 years or so alongside Miller, Dini, and Loeb. Not only can he write the character well, his art is quickly becoming what I imagine when I think of Batman. I think other writers/editors agree too, as more and more of Wagner's Batman illustrations appear on covers.

The Mad Monk picks up where The Monster Men leaves off, the first book in this series. A new villain is introduced, but Batman and the rest of his relationships are developing. It's still early in the dark detective's career and he's having to deal with keeping his identity secret from his girlfriend, and sovling cases with Gordon for the first time. Wagner weaves a simple tale, inspired and reinterpreted from one of Batman's earliest adventures where he encounters a Monk cloaked in red who may or may not be a vampire. Batman is investigating the recent murders while trying to balance out time with his girlfriend Julie, who was introduced in Monster Men. Julie's father Norman returns, as well as crime boss Sal Moroni.

What I'm really enjoying about these books, are how they intertwine story and art elements from both Year One as well as Loeb and Sale's Bat books. It's beginning to bridge the gap and fill in the time between Year One and The Long Halloween in Batman's continuity. It's making Bruce's early years of crime fighting that much more enjoyable to relive for me.

It's hard to say if I enjoyed this more than Monster Men or not. They fit so nicely together that I like to think of them as an ongoing storyline. Julie's character is getting more interesting and less annoying in this book as she deals with being the neglected flame in Bruce's life as well as her father's downward spiral into alcoholism and paranoia. Batman's partnership with Gordon is in full swing by this point, although it's clear that Gordon struggles with his affiliation with a man that dresses like a bat and how that might affect his career and his family. Overall some good solid development all around. The inner monologue and dream sequences contribute greatly.

Not quite as much action in this one as Monster Men, but still some excitement in every chapter. The way the story is told visually is really fluid and helps the flow of each scene. I hope Wagner is in the process of writing another installment, because currently he's creating some of the best recent additions to the Batman canon.

Editorial Review:

Writer/artist Matt Wagner pulls back the curtain on the earliest adventures of Batman in this blood-curdling sequel to BATMAN AND THE MONSTER MEN!

In this dark, moody tale, the young Dark Knight learns that there are more twisted faces of evil than those worn by the street criminals and mobsters of Gotham City. Now, Batman must counter sinister machinations and new dimensions of wickedness as he confronts the hooded menace of the Mad Monk!

FATASTIC EARLY BATMAN WORK! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

For those unfamiliar with the Batman Chronicles, they reprint Batman's earliest Golden Age adventures in chronological order. So in this book you'll get stories from Detective Comics, Batman, as well as the rare 1940 New York World's Fair comic, reprinted in order as they appeared beginning with Detective Comics 39, 40, & 41. These early Batman tales, written by Bill Finger with art by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson show the dark roots of Batman. While not as grim as the modern day incarnation, they are still far different that the rather silly Silver Age stories.

For example in the opening tale from Detective #39 finds Batman taking on a Chinatown tong called the Green Dragon. Tongs were basically Chinese gangs, often associated with organized criminal activities such as smuggling and drugs. The Tong kills by cleaving their enemy's skulls with a hatchet...pretty strong stuff for 1940's comics. The 30's and 40's saw a lot of this "yellow menace" type of threats in popular culture such as pulp magazines, film, and comics.

In Detective #40, longtime villain Clayface makes his first appearance although he's very different than the walking pile of mud we know today. Back then he was just disgruntled horror film star Basil karlo (a veiled similarity to Boris karloff) who disguised his face with makeup.

Batman #2 sees the return of the Joker and I was immediately struck by the fact that over the course of 65 years, the Joker really hasn't changed at all, same white face, green hair, and purple suit. Batman has changed numerous times but his old foe has stayed relatively the same. Contrast this with Catwoman who also appears in this issue. In those days she was merely a pretty brunette who wore a dress and stole jewels. A far cry from the Catwoman we know today!

Back in these early days, Batman was still considered a Spiderman-like menace and he found himself battling the cops almost as much as the criminals. It was also pre-batmobile, and Batman tooled around town in a plain sedan.

I love the Chronicles volumes. I've always felt it was important to keep the Golden Age era alive as much as possible and this is a perfect, and really inexpensive way to do it as these soft cover newsprint volumes are far less expensive than the hard cover Archive series. Bob Kane doesn't get enough credit for his art which is among the finest of all the Golden Age greats.
