The real iconic version of the Boy Wonder 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This story recounts some of Dick Grayson's earliest adventures as the Boy Wonder, his first (of many) falling out with Batman, and his first meeting with Barbara Gordon (who later has her own first year chronicled in Batgirl: Year One- by the same creative team.) The Robin featured in this trade is not the pun-slinger seen on the 1960's TV show, he's intelligent, well-written and intriguing. Having recently witnessed his parents fall to their deaths and then spending a year under Batman's shadow, Dick Grayson still has to deal with normal teenager problems such as girls and school. How can he go to the Homecoming Dance when he has to go out that night and bust up a prostitution ring? The art is spectacular...it has the feel of something out of the 40's but is much cleaner and more refined than most of the stuff from that ear. The use of shadows makes this fit perfectly into the Batman universe. I only wish the same artist worked on the recently released Nightwing: Year One-. The story there is very good, but it would be nice if all these stories had the same look to them. I'm a huge fan of the Batman Family, and Dick Grayson is my absolute favorite comic character. I've been pretty disappointed so far with the new All-Star Batman and Robin title; I wish the creative team from Robin: Year One had worked on that. This trade and the Batgirl trade feel more like the iconic versions of these characters to me than the "goddamn" Batman currently being portrayed by Frank Miller and Jim Lee. Hopefully Dixon, Beatty and Pulido, Martin, and Campanella will have their turn at that title sometime in the future. But for now, there is always Robin: Year One.

Editorial Review:

Too short for the police or the FBI? Yet all you want is to help people. What's to be done? Commissioner Gordon's hot-headed daughter Barbara has her own cunning plan: a mask, a cape, a utility belt. If you can't join the professionals, become a gifted amateur, a crusader in the making.

A NEW BATMAN FOR THE 60'S! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Amazingly enough Showcase Presents Batman vol. one is the first time DC is collecting Batman's Silver Age adventures in the Showcase series (unless you count the Brave and the Bold). This volume features Detective Comics #327-342 and Batman #164-174! The reason why this particular period was chosen is because longtime DC editor Julie Schwartz had take oven the titles and did a long overdue revamping of the character. While it's not exactly the Dark Knight of Frank Miller, it was at least several cuts above the stories from the last decade where Batman routinely fought aliens, monsters, robots, and traveled time.

The stories have a certain grit to them, even if it is a fine grit. Batman is back to battling gangsters, thugs, and mixes in a few of his longtime foes as well. He's back to being a detective as well. The stories are mainly written by Gardner Fox or John Broome with art by Carmine Infantino or Bob Kane. One can clearly see how this period inspired, for better or worse, the 60's TV show. Lots of new things would be in store for Batman readers of the time. Batman #164 introduced the brand new and sporty Batmobile. Batman also put in an elevator in the mansion to take him down to the Batcave--imagine, he'd been using the stairs for over 20 years! A new tunnel was made that led out of the Batcave as well.

Detective # 329 would see the death of Alfred as he perishes assisting Batman & Robin. Detective #332, "The Joker's Last Laugh" finds the Clown Prince of Crime experimenting with "loco weed" dust to make his victims laugh uncontrollably at his corny jokes. The Penguin shows up in Batman # 169 with yet another umbrella scheme for the Dynamic Duo to spoil, but the most historically important story reprinted in this issue is from Batman #171 which is the first Silver Age appearance of the Riddler after an absence of some 17 years! The story begins with the Riddler, Mr. E. Nigma, being released from the state prison and quickly returning to a life of crime.

DC had a reputation (often deserved) for being quite stuffy and lacking pizzazz during the 60's but these Batman stories are a definite exception. The plots were often quite complex and the art was very good. I particularly like the Infantino covers, some of which are really outstanding and underrated. Bob Kane also shows that he had lost none of his artistic flair after having created the Batman character 25 years earlier. This was one of the more enjoyable Showcase editions I've read yet.

A disturbing ill conceived creation 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 19 people found this review helpful.

This book has wonderful art. Bringing together the three most well known of iconic heroes Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman in a globe spanning tale of (sadly) misogny and grit.

The author tries to make the threat of Batman's nemesis "The Demon" virtually a divine character ("as if spawned from a god" ) and then allows him to fight not the Dark Knight but Diana the Wonder Woman an Amazon from an island of beauteous warrior women.

Strangely only the women suffer defeats and attacks in his story. Most notably a battered and bloddy beating for the Amazon, then her island is attacked and "defiled." It appears as if this author is truly upset at women. Reading this story, a story that should be about heroism and nobility and overcoming odds I get the feeling that Wonder Woman represents a girlfriend that upset the author and he get's his "revenge" on women in general by the mischaracterization and degradations he suffers the Amazons and particularly Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is never quite as strong as Superman in the story but instead of just alluding to that, he decides to beat and degrade the most notable icon of feminism.

I would not reccommend this book for a child under 13 and especially not a little girl.

Editorial Review:

BATMAN/SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN: TRINITY tells the remarkable tale of the turbulent first encounter of the worlds most iconic heroes. When Batmans greatest nemesis, Ras al Ghul, recruits Bizarro and an Amazon warrior to aid him in his plan to create global chaos, the Dark Knight Detective suddenly finds himself working with the Man of Steel and the Amazon Princess. Looking to thwart the madmans plot to simultaneously destroy all satellite communications as well as all of the worlds oil reserves, Earths greatest heroes reluctantly band together. But if Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are to have any hope of stopping Ras nuclear missile assault, they will first need to overcome their own biases and reconcile their differing philosophies.

Calling all Ras Al Ghul fans 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

"Tales of the Demon" highlights the issues of the comic in which the infamous villain, Ras Al Ghul, was introduced. Ras Al Ghul is one of the best Batman villains out there. He knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman, he is the leader of powerful assassin groups, and he can be revived from death or serious injury by using his "Lazarus Pit," implying that he may outlive Batman. However, Ras would actually like Batman to replace him and take his beautiful daughter Talia as his wife. So the relationship between the two is very complex.

Batman realizes that in terms of strategy, power, and longevity, Ras may be his greatest challenge. Threatening worldwide destruction, Ras is a villain whose scope of tyranny oustretches even the Joker's. Batman desperately seeks to bring Ras to justice. Not even his affection for Talia can deter him from this single goal.

The stories depict two men who conceive justice in extremely different ways. This book chronicles the personal war that wages on between two men who are strikingly similar and yet worlds apart. If you want to read the history of one of the greatest Batman villains, this is for you.

Hiiisssss 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This novel is fairly good with the art being quite realistic rather than the usual comic look. I think Batman was excellent and definately my choice out of the two heroes. I would have liked the Predators to have been more dangerous, but I won't spoil anything. As I said, a good novel!

Homicidal aliens need love to 4 out of 5 stars.

The artwork is excellent like a blend of Alex Ross and regular comic style, at times I would just stop reading to stare at how nicely it was drawn. I found the story very entertaining. Im not a fan of the Alien and Predator movies but I am a fan of the characters individually and add the Superman/Batman dynamic and you have a good read. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of all 4 characters. The only negative is that I think they could have gone furthur with it, same storyline but more detail.

Editorial Review:

DC's greatest icons, Superman and Batman, clash with the stars of the blockbuster Aliens and Predator movies from Twentieth Century Fox in a no-holds barred slugfest the likes of which the universe has never seen.

In this graphic novel, Batman discovers that the relentless killing machines known as Aliens and the unstoppable race of hunters called Predators have formed a colony that's been hidden away on Earth for centuries. They're now poised to overtake the world -- unless the Dark Knight and Superman can stop them and get them off the planet!

This volume is co-published with Dark Horse Comics.

I've got a secret 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Do the secrets that we keep mold and shape us into who and what we are? The Joker thinks so. He has a secret, one that he is willing to kill for in order to keep. He knows another man's secret, one that he is willing to exert blackmail for in order to exploit. And he thinks that Batman has a secret, and if he doesn't, then why is he so repressed? Sam Kieth's probing and thought provoking tale on secrets and obsessions is punctuated by many insightful and humorous verbal exchanges between these two inescapably intertwined adversaries, intelligently illustrating just how dramatically they are mirror images of themselves, a fact that the Joker will never let Batman forget. This odd couple cannot coexist with each other, but would not exist, especially in the Joker's case, without each other. The Joker's use of blackmail for the purpose of manipulating the media against Batman takes the story into another intriguing direction and explores the power that the media has in influencing how and what people think or believe to be real. And to follow up on that concept even further, what is reality? Is it what literally happens or how it is perceived? Along with that is the implicit understanding that perceptions, and thus reality, can be shaped and molded by others, an idea that has not been lost on the Joker. Kieth's surrealistic artwork with its' dreamlike qualities certainly enhances that reality vs. imaginary mood. Plus throw in some blind, obsessive, and deviant love from the Joker's current amore and this trio could have the entire psychology staff at Arkham pulling double shifts. Batman and the Joker are two sides of the same damaged coin, a thought that makes Batman cringe and a situation that he would love to see end. But according to the Joker, the lunacy must go on. It is what the machine demands, what the public wants, and in regards to more entertaining stories like this, most importantly what the many fans of these two iconic characters want.

Editorial Review:

Sam Kieth, renowned illustrator of THE SANDMAN, has earned a reputation for creating comic-book epics that combine powerful action and thought-provoking themes. Now, he brings that vision to Batman in a story that pits the Dark Knight against the Joker -- all under the unforgiving eye of the media.

Their confrontation is caught on film, and Gotham City's protector appears to pummel his archenemy without mercy. The Joker uses this to frame Batman in the court of public opinion while the media hover like vultures, ready to convict before all the facts are in.

Another flawed relaunch 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

With this trade, you can regrettably add one more title to the list of frustrating and inexcusably botched DCU relaunches since One Year Later. People who follow the comics industry may already be familiar with the behind the scenes intrigue that took place right before its new debut, with the original writer slated for it, Tony Bedard, being removed at the last moment for unbeknownst reasons. In quickly steps Chuck Dixon to purportedly right the ship, an already sticky situation also saddled with an apparent editorially mandated cast of characters. This consequently resulted in a team formulated by a revolving door policy painfully lacking in much needed chemistry and appeal, with the overall disappointing outcome possibly being a direct byproduct of all of these circumstances. The concept of a Batman led black ops troop has always held intriguing possibilities, but unfortunately usually misfired in its creative execution. Sorry to say, this is another shameful example. The basic premise contained herein is actually fairly interesting, centering on a discovered OMAC and its possible use by shadowy adversaries for some unknown ulterior purpose on another planet. However very little of importance truly takes place, with Dixon instead focusing more on internal bickering and gratuitous titillation than the telling of a substantial and compelling tale. It also doesn't help that the trade, consisting of only five rapid read issues, unforgivably ends right in the middle of the story, therefore creating the impression of a serious lack of direction and foresight by the powers that be. In view of its inauspicious beginnings, this project almost seemed doomed from the start, yet the lunacy incredibly rages on. Recently Chuck Dixon and DC bitterly parted ways, which is a whole other soap opera for another time. Considering the current uncertain status of Batman due to RIP, one has to wonder what the future holds for this comic, and ultimately whether or not it even has one.

A must have for Batman and comics fans 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This collection of Batman stories is great! Each of the stories showcased in this collection is from a different era in Batman's history... and they are all fun to read and admire. My personal favorite in this collection is O'Neil/Adams' "The Joker's Five Way Revenge," perhaps because it is from the '70's, when I began reading comics and Adams' intepretation of Batman is so life-like. Also notable is "..My Beginning...and My Probable End," by Bar/Davis/Neary, since it fills it provides another round of character development for Bruce Wayne. For a semi-campy Batman and Robin story, "Robin Dies at Dawn," delivers. Even "24/7," a tale in the post-"Bruce Wayne -Murder?" era is an interesting story of Bruce Wayne rebuilding his reputation.

This collection provides a good representation of the development of Batman through the 20th century. A must have for Batman and comics fans.

Editorial Review:
