Perfect blend of historical and contemporary 5 out of 5 stars.

"More books have been written about Lincoln than any other American," says Sullivan in his biography of our sixteenth President. Not all of them are well done - but this one is excellent and deserves a place on the shelf next to Freedman's Caldecott award-wining Lincoln: A Photobiography (Houghton Mifflin, 1987). Sullivan defines primary and secondary sources, then describes the life and times of Lincoln with a liberal sprinkling of quotes from the President and those who knew him. Excerpts from Lincoln's speeches, letters, and other writings are included, explained, and set into context. The Gettysburg address is reproduced in its brief but effective entirety. The book also gives relates the major events of the Civil War.
The writing is simple and uncluttered, and the oversized text and well-spaced lines make for easy reading. Photos and illustrations add to the narrative without distracting. Chapters are tight and concise, and the design (a mix of contemporary borders with Lincoln's handwriting gracing new chapters) is the perfect blend of old and new.
The book meets the usual 100 page requirement for biographies for middle school reports; teachers who may be turned off by the large print and compact size will appreciate the attention to detail as well as the scholarly chronology, bibliography, further reading, photo credits, and index. Pair this fine example of citing sources, acknowledging other points of view and relaying research from primary sources with Holzer's Abraham Lincoln the Writer (Boyds Mill Press 2000).

Editorial Review:

Abraham Lincoln tells the exciting story of the life of the sixteenth president of the United States using his own writing and speeches. Children will hear Lincoln's story as if they were really there.

Awesome! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I re-read this book a few nights ago and although it is not a story-tale fiction book like I ussually read it is still very enjoyable and extremly educational. It teaches you the amazing story of a girl named Helen Keller who lost her ability to see and hear at a very young age. It takes you through her life during which she accomplishes so many spectacular things and conquers challenges that no one thought she could. She stars in a movie, she learns to read and write and she goes through college and becomes an honor student and all along the way she is guided by her loyal friend Anne Sullivan. I ussually dont read biographys but I'm glad I picked this one up! I encourage you to read it because it makes you realize that even though someone like Helen Keller cant see or hear, it makes them no different than other people and they are perfectly capable of accomplishing anything as long as they set their mind to it. This book is very inspiring and it really makes you realize what a remarkable person Helen Keller was.

Editorial Review:

Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind student to ever attend an American college, but graduating from Radcliffe with honors was only one of her many accomplishments. Her writing and speeches tell the poignant story of a woman who struggles to overcome personal adversity, while working as an advocate for the physically challenged.

Bleak Biography 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book about Paul Revere's life, was right out of a history textbook. It told all about Paul Revere's life, from his birth and raising until his death. It told about his wife who died and his second marriage and children. It also told about his many occupations. I didn't really like this book. Mostly this book has allusion in it because it's a history book and it mentions a lot of famous people and battles and so on. I would recommend this book to people who like history books about the American Revolution. I gave it only 2 stars because it wasn't very interesting and I don't really like historicial fiction books.

Exemplary scholarly and still-interesting writing 5 out of 5 stars.

Sullivan uses primary sources to make Paul Revere's life and times come to life in this fine addition to the new In Their Own Words series. Partly biography, partly a detailed history of the American Revolution, the book explains the famous patriot's role in a young colony's fight for freedom. Revere is well-known for his career as a silversmith and his midnight ride from Boston to Lexington to warn colonists of the impending arrival of British soldiers; Sullivan also brings to light Revere's part in the Boston Tea Party, designed and printed money, and was a shrewd businessman who owned and operated a gunpowder factory and a copper mill.
Primary sources include letters, poems and documents. Longfellow's famous poem that immortalized Paul Revere is included. The illustrations include a map of Revere's route on April 18, 1775, photographs of Revere's silver, a reproduction of his famous portrait commissioned by John Singleton Cooper, and many illustrations and portraits, including Revere's own drawings.
The book includes a chronology, an index, a bibliography, further reading, and additional resources such as the Paul Revere House in Boston MA. Photo credits are listed. Sullivan has a distinct talent for making scholarly research accessible to young students in an engaging and interesting way, and sets an excellent example for crediting sources. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

A biography of the man made famous by a poem about the American Revolution, placing his life and work in its real historical context.

My two cents worth ... 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

George Sullivan has created a very readable and fairly accurate book here. It suffers from a few errors, one of which is so glaring that it calls into question how thoroughly the book was checked or edited. This obvious error is related to the illustration on page 24, which is purported to be a drawing of William Clark's from his journal. In fact, it is not from the journals and was not drawn by Clark. The only accurate information in the book regarding this illustration is that it is credited to be among the collections of the American Philosophical Society Library. The picture on page 24 was actually drawn by Charles Willson Peale; is APS item 917.3 L58 Misc. VII, and can be viewed on-line at www.amphilsoc.org/library/guides/landc/fisher.jpg.

Other historical inaccuracies include his description of a pirogue (page 29); his claim (on page 35) that roasted beaver tongue was a favorite food (he apparently meant roasted beaver tail, or perhaps buffalo tongue); and, on page 75, where he claims that "In the Shoshone camp, Lewis met Cameahwait, the Shoshone chief." Actually, Cameahwait was among the sixty mounted warriors who came racing out at full speed to protect their people from these unknown strangers.

Still, all in all, it is a fine book and is certainly a better choice for children than the competing book by Kathryn Lasky entitled "The Journal of Augustus Pelletier : The Lewis and Clark Expedition." Lasky's book contains much fiction; is not well and obviously marked as such, and presents a very misleading picture to its youthful readers.

I find out what the world needs. Then I go ahead and try to invent it. With these words, Thomas Edison explains how he developed ideas and turned them into useful inventions. Although he is most famous for inventing the lightbulb, Edison is credited with hundreds of inventions. The young boy who did poorly in school became one of the most famous men in America. This exciting new biography of Thomas Edison will enlighten, as well as entertain, elementary school kids.

Young Pioneers in Their Own Words Rocks! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My mom got me this book and I loved it. I couldn't stop reading it even when I was jumping on the trampoline. I thought it was great to read about kids like me, who were pioneers and had to go through such hard times. My favorite story in the book is one where they took some cows across a river and they had to seperate the moms and the babies and they didn't know how they would get them both across, but the moms and babies wouldn't leave each other and just swam across to stay together. What I liked most is learning how much these kids had to do on their own and how grown up they were. They worked just as much as the adults and some of them even had to take care of their families when their moms and dads died. I thought it was great that this book was made up from things these kids actually wrote and told about, so you could tell what they thought. I wish there were more books about how kids really are and what it was like to live in a different time. I think everyone should read this book.

Very good book for students in upper elementary and sixth grade middle school. I chose it because STARBASE offered it as a literature scource for the attending schools. STARBASE in my area also offered a very nice curriculum guide to go along with the book.

Easy to read, and very interesting biography.

This book is great for anyone interested in learning about the land struggles Native Americans faced during the 19th century. Its use of primary sources enhances the understading of Sitting Bull's life and of the Lakota Sioux nation. It produce a greater interest in wanting to seek further information about the topics convered within the biography's chapters.

Editorial Review:

A warrior I have been. Now it is all over. A hard time I have. With these words, Sitting Bull surrendered to the US government on July 20, 1881, after spending most of his life trying to protect his people. A proud father and brave warrior, Sitting Bull wanted the Lakota Sioux to continue hunting buffalo and roaming the Plains. Although he lost this battle, Sitting Bull is remembered for his brave actions and notable accomplishments. In this new biography of Sitting Bull, kids will marvel at this man who lived a life full of adventure and who was noted for his courage.

The Davy Crockett of fact and legend in his own words 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The big budget movie of "The Alamo" that is opening next month was supposed to open last December. Supposedly the reason for the delay was that the director needed to work on the film some more but the big rumor was that he had to change part of the ending which depicted Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton) surviving the final battle and then being executed by General Santa Anna along with a few other prisoners. The story was that Texans were outraged by this distortion of history and insisting that the film show Crockett going down fighting, as was seen in John Wayne's version of "The Alamo" (and even going back to Fess Parker in the stories of Davy Crockett aired on "The Wonderful World of Disney").

In this volume of Scholastic's In Their Own World series, George Sullivan explains the conflicting stories about Crockett's death at the Alamo, explaining to young readers the origins of the two conflicting stories. More importantly, this juvenile biography of Davy Crockett is based on his own personal recollections, letters, and newspaper articles. Crockett's declaration from his own 1834 biography, published two years before the siege of the Alamo, "I stood no chance to become great in any other way than by accident," becomes a guiding idea in Sullivan's biography. The goal is to help separate the legends from the reality, but Sullivan does provide insights into both.

I certainly learned a lot of new information about Crockett's life. Crockett's autobiography was basically written for his last campaign for Congress. I always knew he had lost his last election and headed off for Texas, but I did not know that this was the second time he had been defeated for reelection: he won in 1827 and 1829, was defeated in 1831, reelected in 1833, and then defeated the final time in 1835. Nor did I know that the remains of the Alamo defenders are in a sealed marble casket in a San Antonio church. I especially like the contemporary art work , which includes several illustrations from the books and almanacs the helped created the Crockett legend.

Interest in Crockett will certainly be renewed by the new movie and Sullivan's biography will impress all the young readers who come across it. Sullivan covers Crockett's extraordinary life from growing up in the backwoods of Tennessee to how he made it to the U.S. Congress. His sense of humor and dedication to helping others were constant elements and young students will be surprised to learn Crockett ran away from home when he was only thirteen and even though he was a poor speller ended up being a frontier judge. Additionally, Sullivan takes pains to not only separate fact from fiction but explain where some of the Crockett legends sprang from in this solid juvenile biography.

Editorial Review:

"I stood no chance to become great in any other way than by accident." With these words, Davy Crockett reflects on his extraordinary journey from growing up in the backwoods of Tennessee to becoming a congressperson in Washington, D.C. People often do not know the truth about the man made famous for the crucial role he played in the Battle of the Alamo. Kids will find out about Davy's well-known sense of humor and dedication to helping those around him in this exciting biography.
