Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked up this book from the library and was very pleasantly surprised. Both I and my four year old love it! The "day in a life of" approach along with the beautiful illustrations captured us both. So much that I came onto Amazon to find more books by this author. The library cover flap says that Ms. Butterworth has authored more than 70 non-fiction books for children. Where are they? This is the only one that came up. Hope to see more coming?!

Editorial Review:

In the warm ocean among the waving sea grass meadows, an eye like a small black bead is watching the fish dart by. Who does it belong to? Seahorse! Dive into the magical, underwater realm of one of the shyest fish of all! Discover the secrets of a seahorse's life cycle, and find out about its food, its habitat and how it's the dad, not the mum, who gives birth to their babies! Lots of fun on this mushroom hunt! 5 out of 5 stars.

Loved this book! It is full of beautiful illustrations and interesting facts about mushrooms, interwoven with a story of a family going into the mysterious woods searching for mushrooms. The little girl stomps on puffballs and brown spore dust bursts out. The little boy pulls up a large gray mushroom and sees threads of fungus under a pile of dead leaves. The family walks home under the moonlight. There are full page illustrations of the woods in autumn, and smaller drawings of various mushrooms, very beautifully done.

Editorial Review:

Join a family as they set out on a trip to the woods to go mushroom hunting and learn about these strange and interesting fungi that sometimes can be very delicious and very deadly at other times.

Walk with a Wolf 5 out of 5 stars.

Walk with a Wolf is a part of the Candlewick Press series Read and Wonder. I love this series of books for my daughters. It is an excellent source of nonfiction for young children. This title is full of soft watercolor illustrations that depict the life of a wolf pack. The book includes a scene where a pack of wolves hunts a moose, but the scene is handled well and is not scary for my four-year-old. I highly recommend this title and any other in the series.

All pigs ARE beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.

I must admit -- I love pigs. This book is great at showing how and why pigs are so great. Here's to more pig appreciation!

A great book - educational and entertaining! 5 out of 5 stars.

What a great teaching tool for any educator! Dick King-Smith does a wonderful job of combining facts about pigs with their "personality", wrapping it all into one enjoyable reading experience. I can't wait to share it with the students at our school.

Good facts but... 1 out of 5 stars.

It really disappointed me to find the word "stupid" in the book. I am aware most of us use that kind of language once in a while but at least I don't expect to find this kind of vocabulary in a book for kids. I believe the word "silly" could have been used instead. This is the second time I find this word in a book for kids. Good luck for me they were library books and I just returned them. The other one was "The Dinosaurs are Back and It's All Your Fault Edward!" by Wendy Hartmann (Author) and Niki Daly (Illustrator).

CUTE BOOK--Interesting, easy to read, fun and educational 5 out of 5 stars.

The "Read and Wonder" series, as a whole, is great! This is one of our favorites, however. The story is told from the perspective of someone who truly loves pigs, and will educate your child (and you) about these delightful creatures and some of their human-like traits. The illustrations are also well-done.

These books are always a good value.

Editorial Review:

Relaunch of an award-winning non-fiction series. Read and Wonder is an innovative and highly acclaimed series of non-fiction picture books about the real world. They're written from a very personal viewpoint, mixing facts with feelings, encouraging children to think, feel and imagine as they learn. These six titles include the talents of celebrated authors and illustrators such as Dick King-Smith. Barbara Firth. Anita Jeram and Karen Wallace.
