Editorial Review:

The Holy Fire: The Teachings of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto is a journey into the mind and spirit of a sublime hasidic master in his moments of joy and tranquillity, and later, in his time of personal and communal catastrophe. The reader takes a voyage into the rich and variegated world of twentieth-century Hasidism in Poland, a world destroyed by the Holocaust. This is a volume inspired by a deeply sensitive and poetic individual of faith who is grappling with an unfolding disaster. While the Holocaust has engendered a voluminous body of religious and philosophical writings attempting to probe the issues this unfathomable period raises in all their enormity, virtually all were written after the war, when a modicum of distance and reflection is possible. Contemporaneous diaries and chronicles written as the events were happening concentrate on the descriptive accounts of the horrors. The Holy Fire, however, engages a sustained theological reflection and stands alone as an extended religious response from within the heart of darkness itself while the catastrophe takes place, and is, for this reason, an extraordinary document and an astonishing personal achievement.

Editorial Review:

This book offers the complete text of Book II of the Codex Calixtinus, the twenty-two miracles associated with St. James, including the famous miracle of the hanged boy, who revives when his father returns from his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The introduction analyzes the types, places, and recipients of the miracles and discusses the appearances of St. James himself in these stories. This volume also presents the chapter 17 of Book I, the Veneranda dies sermon. This is a contemporary description of the necessity, the ways and means, and the dangers of making the Compostela pilgrimage. The author's diatribes against the abuses common on the route give the twentieth-century reader a fascinating view of life on pilgrimage. Introduction, notes, illustrations, bibliography, index.

Editorial Review:

In this powerful book, Carol Ochs shows us how to develop a personal theology by examining our life stories, learning to recognize God at work in them, and bringing them into conversation with Torah. Using timeless biblical texts as lenses to see the present, she helps us understand who we are and who God is for us by exploring the tightly interwoven basic elements of our lives--our love, suffering, work, bodies, prayer, community, and experiences of death.

Through the process of seeing our experiences in relation to Biblical stories, we begin to recognize our lives as part of the ongoing story of the Jewish people--as Torah. This insight allows us to see these experiences as meaningful, not accidental, and opens us to recognizing God's power in and through all that happens to us. Rather than a collection of random events, our lives are part of the Jewish people's ongoing adventure. Armed with our personally shaped theology, we can face this adventure of living in the vanguard of history with awareness and confidence.

Editorial Review:

The Gutnick Chumash has gained wide acclaim as one of the favorite Chumashim available today. It incorporates a flowing English translation of the Torah which is loyal to Rashi. The 'Classic questions' are drawn from a range of commentators, Midrash and Talmud, which are then ingeniously brought together in the Toras Menachem commentary. It is the first Chumash to include a commentary anthologized from the works of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Chumash also boasts a large sampling of inspirational Chasidic thoughts and insights into the Parsha, as well as practical lessons for our daily lives. The diagrams, charts, and illustrations all add to make this the perfect Chumash for layman or scholar. Beautifully bound in a hand-tooled leather style cover, both inside and outside are sure to impress.

Rabbi Gilbert Kaperman former President of the New York Board of Rabbis writes this about the book. " The book is a scholarly compendium of chapters of wisdom reflecting classical Jewish attitudes toward life, death, and bereavement and the concomitant issues of God's will , faith "
This work is a collection of fifty- seven eulogies given by Rabbi Rozwaski in which he as the book- jacket says ' gives messages of inspiration and strength'
Rowazski's firm religious belief and his belief in the afterlife are conveyed here clearly . He makes a considered and considerate effort to bring comfort and consolation. A book which may be of help in hard times.

Editorial Review:

Why do the disciples of the Ba al Shem Tov want to sneak out of prayer services? How can it happen that when two men climb down a chimney, one comes out clean while the other comes out dirty? What lesson does the mother teach her son by grabbing his pinky finger and pointing to his fingernail? If God is everywhere, why does the seer of Lublin go into the forest to find God?

The answers to these curious questions, and many others, are revealed in the fifty-four stories in Three Times Chai. Storytelling has always been central to the Jewish tradition, and it s easy to understand why: A good story entertains, enlightens, and at its best, inspires. It s little wonder that to inform hearts as well as minds, we often choose to tell a story.

Three Times Chai presents the very best of the Jewish tradition of storytelling in the voices of fifty-four contemporary rabbis. Some of their stories are light and humorous; others invite more reflection. And whether it leaves a smile on your lips or a lump in your throat, each story reflects a Jewish ideal. Each one can help us think about who we are, the nature of our relationships, and the way in which we would ideally lead our lives.

The stories in Three Times Chai are diverse in origin, style, and content: There are classic Bible stories, rabbinic and modern commentary, folktales, and legends. And the rabbis who retell these stories are likewise diverse in their backgrounds and personal beliefs. Some of them are well-known in the Jewish community; some are well-known for their storytelling abilities; some have only just begun to establish their own voice. All of them retell their favorite stories in their own voice, allowing their unique style and personality to shine through. Each story is followed by a brief explanation about why it is the rabbi s favorite.

You need not be religious to appreciate what these stories have to say; the lessons are universal. They remind us that even while we are entertained, we have a tremendous responsibility to ourselves, to our families, to our neighbors, and to our communities.

Most certainly, among these fifty-four stories you will find your own favorites!

A tribute worthy of the Rav 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Rabbi Joseph Dov Ber Soloveitchik Z"ts"l is here eulogized by a large group of his students , and by members of his family . They bring out his greatness in ' learning' and the tremendous influence he had on their lives. I found the most remarkable essay of all to be that of his father writing to recommend his son as candidate for chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv in 1935. The legendary Rav is here shown to be also a considerate human being.
The book is inspired by love, gratitude and recognition of a true 'Gadol HaDor ' a giant of his generation.
Who reads this book will meet a great Jewish teacher and thinker and come to know more intimately one of the most important Jewish spiritual leaders of the past century.

Editorial Review:

This is a work about Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. Edited with great care and devotion, it seeks to depict ''the Rav'' to the average, thoughtful layperson through the very human and personal perspectives of members of his family, as well as devoted disciples. In addition to being a man of deep learning and powerful intellect, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik is presented here as a man of great chesed, profound personal piety and impeccable integrity. The eulogies (hespidem) collected in this volume, delivered by leaders of the Orthodox community, chronicle the impact of not only a brilliant philosopher and master pedagogue, but a caring, thoughtful and awe-inspiring teacher and role model.
