Editorial Review:

Never has the relationship between art and nature been more complicated and more fragile, but also richer and more fascinating. The artists and architects in Natural Architecture have transformed the act of building into an art form capable of sparking new relationships with nature, landscape, and the environment. Natural Architecture presents sixty-six site-specific installations that use raw materials, manual labor, and natural stimuli to create truly green architecture that is as organic as the materials with which it is created. Projects by Olafur Eliasson, Patrick Dougherty, Nils-Udo, Ex. Studio, Edward Ng, nArchitects, and many others are shown together for the first time. Selected for their commitment to the use of raw materials, manual labor, and natural inspiration, these works are vividly displayed in photographs, drawings, and models. As organic as the materials with which they are built, these creations allow the changing landscape to naturally overtake each structure until it finally decomposes. Each project is accompanied by a series of photographs, drawings, and models.

Editorial Review:

New developments occur when boundaries are crossed. Today, the most progressive designers are working at the intersection of various creative disciplines. They are challenging existing design principles and defining them anew. Many designers from different areas are choosing to no longer work exclusively in two dimensions and are instead dealing intensively with space, material and physical products. The book Hidden Track investigated this development in 2005 and portrayed it in its breadth for the first time.

Now, Tactile shows how graphic design is moving into three-dimensional objects and products and presents graphic design that works with space - or the perception of space. The book focuses less on murals than on products, objects, installations and collage that demonstrate how designers are developing and implementing their ideas spatially from the very outset of a given project. Tactile proves that spatial innovation in graphic design is not limited to personal work or artistic endeavors for exhibition, but is being sought out more and more often by commercial clients, for example in store design.

With its insight into this experimental field of graphic design, Tactile targets young, progressive designers as well as professionals from the fields of advertising, architecture and interior design. Because its topical content is compiled in a way that highlights the interesting multi-disciplinary interactions between the various works, Tactile also offers inspiration for creatives in fashion, lifestyle and art.

Editorial Review:

At 18, Corita Kent (1918-1986) entered the Roman Catholic order of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Angeles, where she taught art and eventually ran the art department. After more than 30 years, at the end of the 1960s, she left the order to devote herself to making her own work. Over a 35-year career she made watercolors, posters, books and banners--and most of all, serigraphs--in an accessible and dynamic style that appropriated techniques from advertising, consumerism and graffiti. The earliest of it, which she began showing in 1951, borrowed phrases and depicted images from the Bible; by the 1960s, she was using song lyrics and publicity slogans as raw material. Eschewing convention, she produced cheap, readily available multiples, including a postage stamp. Her work was popular but largely neglected by the art establishment--though it was always embraced by such design luminaries as Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller and Saul Bass. More recently, she has been increasingly recognized as one of the most innovative and unusual Pop artists of the 1960s, battling the political and religious establishments, revolutionizing graphic design and making some of the most striking--and joyful--American art of her era, all while living and practicing as a Catholic nun. This first study of her work, organized by Julie Ault on the twentieth anniversary of Kent's death, with essays by Ault and Daniel Berrigan, is the first to examine this important American outsider artist's life and career, and contains more than 90 illustrations, many of which are reproduced for the first time, in vibrant, and occasionally Day-Glo, color.

Exhibition Design 1 out of 5 stars.

I just received the book "Exhibition Design" today from Amazon.

I was very excited to find the title because there are so few books on the
subject of museum exhibition design.

I was however very disappointed with the overall quality of the book. I have
other W. W. Norton books ( Building the Empire State) and I own close to 300
architecture and design books.

I have never been so shocked at the poor quality of the photography in any
of my books. Some of the photos in Exhibition Design book were not
sharp....some where so dark you could not tell what was really going on in
the exhibit...but most seem like they were photographed with a camera phone.

I was even shocked at the poor picture resolution of the Ralph Applebaum
exhibits (blurry non sharp pictures and poorly lit)... I have a couple of
books that cover the same projects and the photos in those books are
wonderful...I assumed that companies like Applebaum send out a specific
press kit with professional photographs.

I guess I have learned that I should always see a design book in person
before buying it on line.

Editorial Review:

Ann Hamilton: An Inventory of Objects is a major new publication of the work of one of today's most important and influential artists. The book is a comprehensive catalogue of Hamilton's object-based work from 1984 to 2006. The more than 130 color plates document photographs, sculpture, video, audio and language pieces (both unique and editioned), as well as multiples and prints. Many of the objects relate to the large-scale installations for which Hamilton is internationally known. Each object in the inventory is accompanied by a text by Joan Simon, who also contributes a significant new essay setting Hamilton's objects in critical context. The complete inventory of Hamilton's objects made over the past 20-plus years is reproduced in this essential publication, which also contains an extensive biography, bibliography and index. The book, designed by the Swedish designer Hans Cogne in conversation with Ann Hamilton, is a beautiful object in its own right and evokes many of the conceptual qualities of Hamilton's art.

The first comprehensive exploration of this influential artist's irreverent and idiosyncratic installations from the mid-1970s to the present. Pfaff produces art of great originality and strong emotional impact with unusual materials, a spontaneous approach, and vast creative energy.

Editorial Review:

New York-based artist Tony Oursler says of his drawings, "Each object I touch has a text. Like it or not, I hear it, I see it. Each touch throws me hopelessly out of my time, out of my mind. In this fractured psychological state, I'm amazed that this fragile scribbling on paper survived." While his position as a forerunner in video art is well established, Oursler's two-dimensional works have always been an essential part of his creative process as well. He describes these works on paper as a series of perceptions, scenes, delusions and diagrams--a free association of ideas that inform his video work. Oursler uses drawing, painting and collage as a diary--a means of remembering, associating or layering thoughts. The studies, sketches and paintings explore the supernatural, methods of mass communication, the history and development of media technology and their effect on the human psyche. This publication offers a chronology of Oursler's two-dimensional work over the past 10 years, showcasing his early works on canvas, painting on sculpture, painting with collage and his videos that are projected onto painted panels. It is published in conjunction with Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York.

Editorial Review:

Since 1968, Brussels-born, Paris-based Chantal Akerman has produced over 50 film and video works, in the genres of documentary and French New Wave-inspired fictional narrative. She is one of the foremost auteur-directors working today, yet she has never had a solo museum exhibition in the United States, nor has there been significant scholarly inquiry into her body of work. Her early experiments with Structuralist, Marxist and Feminist filmmaking have expanded what is possible in film today. Asserting Akerman's contribution to the genre, this volume introduces her work to those who have not had a chance to see it firsthand. With interpretive and anecdotal commentary on Akerman's oeuvre, the documentary films covered here have not been explored elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive overview, the first to appear in almost a decade, examines an artistic career, that now must be viewed as one of the most fascinating in the history of Contemporary art. From his highly controversial and seminal performance works of the early 1970s, to his complex, imaginative installations and monumental sculptures, the art of Chris Burden uniquely informs as well as incorporates the major artistic undercurrents of the last three decades. Not only has the artist made a major contribution to the history of body-related performance art, but the artist's fascination with systems of power, societal organization, architectural structure and technological systems, have resulted in an extraordinary body of sculptural objects and environmental installations over the last 35 years. In compiling this publication the artist has worked closely with curator and long time associate Fred Hoffman, taking this opportunity to re-examine his work afresh and revealing images that are unpublished or rarely seen. Chris Burden's unwavering commitment to aesthetic clarity and purity shows here in the detailed documentation of his major works, both old and new. It extensively illustrates how the artist has uniquely combined the essence of minimalist aesthetics with some of the most advanced technological contributions of the industrial age. Previously unpublished images from Burden's archives and essays by distinguished scholars and critics make this an unprecedented examination of a vital artist. Essays by Fred Hoffman, Paul Schimmel, Kristine Stiles and Robert Storr. Hardcover, 9.5 x 11.5 in./256 pgs / Illustrated throughout.

Editorial Review:

No less versatile in his writing than in his installations, films, architecture, and sculpture, Liam Gillick unites his critical essays in this collection, most of which were originally printed in art magazines or exhibition catalogues. Lauded for his ingenious reinterpretation of Conceptual and Minimalist art, Liam Gillick has often used language, whether in type on a wall or on a page, as a site of artistic, theoretical, and political intervention. He reveals himself here as a witness of and major actor in the largely European 1990s art scene that included Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huyghe, Carsten H ller, Angela Bulloch, Douglas Gordon, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. A key publication of discussions, references, and artistic engagements of the 1990s, the book also allows an examination of the renewed importance at this time of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, John Baldessari, and Allen Ruppersberg.
