Bill Troops compilations with Anchells editing ability. Can't go wrong ! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Bill Troop has been very well connected to a lot of people in photography over the years and was heavily engaged with developers at Kodak in Rochester. He accumulated a significant amount of subjective information and has pretty much pushed it all right into this book. It's prefect for the darkroom enthusiast who is intrigued with historic processes and how they might effect ones creative options. Note that this is not an instructional book for beginners but something more targeted at the advanced enthusiast whose interest has grown beyond the use of commonly available processes.

Editorial Review:

An up-to-date manual for modern film development techniques. Companion volume to the bestselling The Darkroom Cookbook, this book concentrates on films, their characteristics and the developers and other chemicals each requires for maximum control of the resulting image. It specifically addresses the difficult subject of T-grain film development and includes rarely found information on film development and the nature of film developers. The authors also tackle many of the widely accepted myths of film development. They reject the trend toward scientific evaluation of films and developers in favor of the photographer s development of a personal aesthetic, without relying exclusively on densitometry or H&D curves. 192 pp., fully illus., 7 x 10 , Spiralbound.

Another one from the black and white master 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

It takes a uniquely talented, seasoned master of photography like Jeff Palmer to convey a sense that is generally best experienced in person and translate it so meaningfully to another sense entirely.

In this book, the tactile experience of caresses, rubs, embraces and more is eloquently captured, evoking the emotions associated with these physical sensations in an almost inevitable way: the rush of feeling when a loved one brushes you as he walks by, the light touch of a supportive hand on the back of your neck, and yes - the pleasures found by self-touch.

Jeff Palmer's beloved black and white is anything but cold and unemotional, thriving without warm color by the intense heat of physical closeness. Like the light frisson that often accompanies an intimate stroke of a finger, these images will surprise you with their quiet yet potent sensuality.

Editorial Review:

Long expected and much desired - Jeff Palmer's new masterpiece - thrilling!

This work is "touching" in the true meaning of the word - Jeff Palmer's artistic male photography presents American dreamboats in sensual and intimate togetherness. Muscle-bound men in highly emotional scenes are masterfully enveloped in light and shadows. They open up to the camera's lens with both self-assurance and abandon. Palmer's newest works took quite some time to complete and you can see it in the results. Those looking for a snapshot aesthetic may be disappointed. But those who appreciate meticulously composed photographs of male nudes are sure to be delighted.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

WOW! That's all I can say about Anton Corbijn (cor-bin)Just thought you'd like to know.

The most amazing, precise, moving, expressive, imaginative, distinct, photos I've ever seen!(And I have a BFA in photography!)

well worth any cost.

Editorial Review:

Anton Corbijn has "a reluctance to impose" on his subjects that they admire, "a way of making you feel that you wouldn't mind experimentally making an arse of yourself--because he doesn't either," says Brian Eno, whose eerie portrait is one of the more arresting images in this collection of Corbijn's work. There are some powerful photographs here--Sinead O'Connor, David Byrne, William S. Burroughs--that stand as testament to the portraitist's talents. His use of color is beautifully surreal, but most of his pictures are black and white. Some are decidedly unflattering: Johnny Cash looks like a cadaver, Neil Young like an ex-con who could use a kind word. Some are playful, such as those of Mick Jagger cavorting in a pair of masks. The majority of Corbijn's photographs are raw and unsettling; few are possible to ignore.

Editorial Review:

Veteran National Geographic photographer, photo editor, and filmmaker Richard Olsenius provides a compelling case for capturing the essence of people and landscapes through black-and-white photography and shares his secrets to mastering the craft. The ability of the black-and-white photograph to strip away the unnecessary and concentrate a message through form, shadow, and light provides its intrinsic strength. Because of its power to communicate, black and white is often chosen in the art, documentary, and commercial worlds. With 120 photographs illustrating the techniques used, this guidebook is as much about how to visualize a story in black and white as it is about the technical aspects of photography.

With the popularity of digital cameras, Olsenius dedicates much time discussing the benefits of using digital technology for black-and-white photography, but he also discusses more traditional cameras and their uses. In addition to advice from Olsenius, this field guide includes the work of four other noteworthy photographers—Father Don Doll, Brian Peterson, Marion E. Warren, and Nick Kelsh—all covering a realm of different subject matter from Native Americans to commercial photography.

For more than a century, National Geographic has been synonymous with expertise and excellence in photography. National Geographic Photography Field Guide: Black & White is a vital reference and how-to manual for photographers of all levels.

Editorial Review:

Does anybody really know the "next-generation photographers," the successors to Newton, Lindbergh, von Unwerth, and Ritts? The shots in this volume are an introduction to these newcomers and their accomplished, sexy, romantic work - the best of today's nude photography in black and white. Classic black-and-white photography shows clearly who knows how to take a good picture and who doesn't. The photographers contributing to this volume display their mastery of photography both as a craft and as an art form.

Excellent intro to BW Photography 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have used this text in my introduction to black and white photography course for just over a year. Student response has been universally positive. We have all found it thorough, well written and easily understood by into students. My only "wish" is that the author had included a section on negative faults such as found in Horenstein's: Black and White Photograpy: A Basic Manual.

Provides contemporary photographers with the basic skills 5 out of 5 stars.

A fabulous curiosity. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Nancy Rica Schiff has given us the second in her series about people whose work takes them outside, in some cases way outside, the box. It holds hope for those who can't seem to imagine a way out of the dull routine of normal work. A real asset to those counselling others on the difference between occupation and vocation.

The Oddest Job 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nancy Rica Schiff is an amazing photographer. She has a brilliant eye for composition and subject, and an uncanny knack for taking the bizarre or mundane and producing something dazzling and thought-provoking.

This book is a testament to those who "walk to the beat of a different drum" and have persistently remain nonconformist in a world that is ever-demanding more conformity. The kind of people that there used to be a lot more of, once upon a time.

This book is also a testament to Ms. Schiff's virtuosity both as a photographer and an art director. You will not be able to put thus book down once you have picked it up. I have completely fallen in love with every person featured here, and have also fallen in love with Ms. Schiff. She is BRILLIANT. (No, this is not her mother, haha! Just an avid fan and "admirer from afar.")

Truly a masterclass of it's own 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is really an excellent book for teaching, or just for the public. It gives you great pointers on how to achieve a certain look for a particular picture. It is also interesting to see how different pictures can look when certain effects are applied to it. I would recommend this book to anyone as a gift or a personal collection of their own.

John Garrett's Black & White Photography Masterclass 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I did not think this was a MASTERCLASS. Has a lot of black and white prints...but, short on text. I was looking for more in the instruction area as a MASTERCLASS on photography.

Editorial Review:

In a refreshingly no-nonsense approach, the author guides readers through the entire photographic process, from basic visualization and composition techniques to sophisticated darkroom procedures. A series of case studies are provided to guide you through the developing process and show you how to get the best results from advances in film, developers and papers.

Save your money 1 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

If you know anything at all about digital imaging, save your money and don't bother with this book. This is a book in which Mr. Schaub tells us such useful things as: "Art and craft are delicately balanced in every stage of creating a black-and-white image. Your goal is to produce images that will touch the viewer and express your artistic vision." He then proceeds to illustrate his "artistic vision" with some pretty lame examples. It seems he spends a lot of time in the woods because many, if not most, of his examples involve various kinds of vegetation. Some of his "improvements" tend to trash a fairly good starting image, though a few of his improvements do, in fact, improve.

On page 57 he informs us that "A digital image is composed of (are you ready for this?) pixels." The rest of the book is pretty much at this level. On page 148, which has the title "Paper For Your Printer," Mr. Schaub tells us that "An inkjet printer creates an image composed of dots that are literally sprayed onto the paper." He then explains that "Matching ink and paper can be a daunting problem," but fails to give us any information that'll help solve the "daunting" problem. Basically, what he suggests is mucking around with paper and ink combinations until you find one you like.

This book is a real shame. It could have been so good and such a help, but it started fizzling on the very first page.

Editorial Review:

•Shows photographers how to use digital printing techniques to create masterful black-and-white images
•Digital printing is replacing the darkroom-everyone who shoots in black and white needs to know these specialized techniques

Everybody's shooting in black and white-for weddings, for studio work, for portraits and family pictures, and anything that looks great with a classic, documentary style. Digital cameras make it easier to shoot in black and white, but many photographers are struggling to create the sharp, crisp, timeless look of great pictures in this medium. They need Amphoto's Guide to Digital Black and White Printing. From new digital ways to perform traditional darkroom techniques (such as exposure, burning and dodging, and highlight control) to handling duotones, hue saturation, and even "hand coloring" effects...it's all here, in black and white.

Editorial Review:

"Hey, would you like to make a suggestion?"

With that simple question and an enormous white suggestion box, the New York City based collaborative Illegal Art canvassed the five boroughs, collecting suggestions from passersby of every stripe the young, the old, the filthy rich, the homeless, the mouthy, and the shy. "Love each other or perish." "Take breath mints when offered." "Give me a break!" In true New York style, the suggestions are by turns hilarious, nonsensical, angering, and heartwarming. Some people held the suggestion box prisoner while they wrote suggestion after suggestion; others ignored the box, but then came scrambling back with a sudden idea. One woman scribbled as she walked down Wall Street: "More time in the day." One man in Harlem, when asked if he would like to make a suggestion, said, "Isn't it obvious? World peace." Or at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, a woman sadly wrote her misspelled suggestion and then held it up for all to read: "Never brake up with someone on a bridge." With over 350 entries and 50 photos of the suggestion box in action, Suggestion is authentic, honest, and totally appealing a testiment to the the public's innermost desire, whether it's free beer, free daycare, or free pumpkin pie every Thursday.
