Editorial Review:

"Hey, would you like to make a suggestion?"

With that simple question and an enormous white suggestion box, the New York City based collaborative Illegal Art canvassed the five boroughs, collecting suggestions from passersby of every stripe the young, the old, the filthy rich, the homeless, the mouthy, and the shy. "Love each other or perish." "Take breath mints when offered." "Give me a break!" In true New York style, the suggestions are by turns hilarious, nonsensical, angering, and heartwarming. Some people held the suggestion box prisoner while they wrote suggestion after suggestion; others ignored the box, but then came scrambling back with a sudden idea. One woman scribbled as she walked down Wall Street: "More time in the day." One man in Harlem, when asked if he would like to make a suggestion, said, "Isn't it obvious? World peace." Or at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, a woman sadly wrote her misspelled suggestion and then held it up for all to read: "Never brake up with someone on a bridge." With over 350 entries and 50 photos of the suggestion box in action, Suggestion is authentic, honest, and totally appealing a testiment to the the public's innermost desire, whether it's free beer, free daycare, or free pumpkin pie every Thursday.

The Bible of Black & White 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Superbly written and organised. Assumes some knowledge of black and white (but not a lot). Gives detailed "how-to" for most everything you might want to do. For example: Toning of prints is covered in spots throughout, and there's also a chapter on the subject. In the chapter, use of brand name toners is described. They tell you how to tone the print in a step-by-step manner. Then, they also tell you how to make your own chemicals, provide safety notes, some words of wisdom from experience, and what's not important too. In all, this book will help advance a beginner and teach some new tricks to advanced photographers.

Editorial Review:

"...designed to provide photographers with a deeper technical understanding of all monochrome materials, processes and equipment....challenge(s) your old assumptions and get(s) you to try new ideas while re-exploring old ones, inspiring you to take photos....explains new advances in monochrome film and offers the advice of world-class photographers. Covered topics include what film to use, framing your shots, new development processes, mastering settings, filters and exposure, setting up the darkroom, and tips on buying equipment and materials. Illustrated throughout with photographs that demonstrate technical points or stand alone as artwork, The Black and White Handbook is an excellent reference book for all monochrome enthusiasts."--Photo Industry Reporter.

Save your money 1 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

If you know anything at all about digital imaging, save your money and don't bother with this book. This is a book in which Mr. Schaub tells us such useful things as: "Art and craft are delicately balanced in every stage of creating a black-and-white image. Your goal is to produce images that will touch the viewer and express your artistic vision." He then proceeds to illustrate his "artistic vision" with some pretty lame examples. It seems he spends a lot of time in the woods because many, if not most, of his examples involve various kinds of vegetation. Some of his "improvements" tend to trash a fairly good starting image, though a few of his improvements do, in fact, improve.

On page 57 he informs us that "A digital image is composed of (are you ready for this?) pixels." The rest of the book is pretty much at this level. On page 148, which has the title "Paper For Your Printer," Mr. Schaub tells us that "An inkjet printer creates an image composed of dots that are literally sprayed onto the paper." He then explains that "Matching ink and paper can be a daunting problem," but fails to give us any information that'll help solve the "daunting" problem. Basically, what he suggests is mucking around with paper and ink combinations until you find one you like.

This book is a real shame. It could have been so good and such a help, but it started fizzling on the very first page.

Editorial Review:

•Shows photographers how to use digital printing techniques to create masterful black-and-white images
•Digital printing is replacing the darkroom-everyone who shoots in black and white needs to know these specialized techniques

Everybody's shooting in black and white-for weddings, for studio work, for portraits and family pictures, and anything that looks great with a classic, documentary style. Digital cameras make it easier to shoot in black and white, but many photographers are struggling to create the sharp, crisp, timeless look of great pictures in this medium. They need Amphoto's Guide to Digital Black and White Printing. From new digital ways to perform traditional darkroom techniques (such as exposure, burning and dodging, and highlight control) to handling duotones, hue saturation, and even "hand coloring" effects...it's all here, in black and white.

Editorial Review:

These superb, painterly photographs explore the dark side of the sexual arena. Here de Sade’s philosophy encounters essential 21st century BDSM; dripping lust meets sweet agony. China Hamilton’s masterful black and white photography captures a shadowy world apart and perhaps timid readers should think twice before ordering.

The benchmark for beginners and Pro's. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My first attempts in the darkroom were some 31 years ago and I purchased many, many books to discover the how and why of black and white printing. I still have all those books, BUT now that I have Tim Rudman's book in my new darkroom the others gather dust. This book is the benchmark for beginners and Pro's.
Thank you Amazon for making it available.

Example or really good book on advance printing 5 out of 5 stars.

I am quite new to Black and White printing (that is I do my own printing but I am not professional). I am amazed by the wealth of information given in this book on toning, bleaching, multiple printing and so on. Furthermore you could really see what author mean by showing photographs before and after using some bleaching toning or other technics. And photographs by itself don't feel to be unnatural, in a sense, that most of them show some grain in much or less degree depending on used techinics. Of course, some photographers who like gradual soft sort of photography may not like Rudman's harsh contrasty style of depicting nature, but who cares, it's his artistic expression. He could really explain how he got one or another effect. By the way, if at the end you don't like this book you may leave it for the simple fact of its attractiveness. It could serve you as nice coffee table book, quality is superb. Excellent book.

Editorial Review:

The Photographer's Master Printing Course offers the enthusiastic printer and the complete beginner alike the key to creating perfect prints that combine technical assurance with true self-expression. Ranging from the basics of equipping a darkroom to advanced skills such as lith printing, tonong and multiple printing, this complete volume is on the recommended book list of the Royal Photographic Society's Visual Arts Panel.

As with all of the Pro Lighting series of books, this latest edition adds insightful tips and tricks into the world of "pro" level B/W photography. Especially helpful are the detailed shot elements that allow you to very closely achieve results like those you see in print.

A must have to complete the collection. Do not miss this title.

An Essential Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a serious, pro-amature who's been away from photography for quite a few years. When I treated myself to a Nikon N80 for my birthday this year, I knew that black and white photography was where I wanted to focus. Black and White Shots is an invaluable source for me for staging as well as lighting for black and white photography. I was able to look at pictures that caught my eye and read both description and a diagram of how the photographer put the shot together. Film type, f/stops, lighting types, positioning and notes about the shoot -- this book had it ALL!!! It told me the basics and allowed me to add my own creative touch to a photo session. Definitely a reference KEEPER!

Advanced Workshop 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is not a technical book on black and white photography. Although the author provides some technical material, it assumes that you are already past the basics. This book is more about developing and refining your aesthetic, the part of photography that is harder to teach and may I say harder to learn.

The author takes you on a journey through a series of images discussing everything from the original motivation behind the capture to the final execution of the print. Throughout it is sprinkled with delightful insights and perceptive observations. The author also shows prints that were left out of the final portfolio and discusses what artistic criteria they failed to meet. Quite instructive indeed.

I found this book useful, despite the fact that I usually print digitally from film scans. I also found the images a welcome deviation from the usual punched up prints that are popular today. However, you need not ascribe to the author's taste to benefit from the book.

Editorial Review:

John Blakemore has been a key figure in British photography for over thirty years. He is a recognized master of the black and white medium, and here he presents a unique and practical masterclass in the techniques that have earned him worldwide acclaim.

Bringing his vast knowledge and experience to bear, John Blakemore explores the creative as well as the technical processes involved in black and white photography. Long awaited for the many thousands of photographers that have attended his legendary workshops over the years and essential for the many more that have never had the chance, this is a unique insight into the art of one of photography's most influential practitioners and an important document of the methods of one of photography's most important teachers.

Editorial Review:

Fine art quality, black-and-white prints are within every photographer's reach with the techniques illustrated in this digital image editing guide. Taking advantage of the control and reproducibility that the digital darkroom offers, this handbook teaches photographers how to fine-tune images with contrast and exposure levels, crop and rotate images for dynamic results, and remove flaws such as dust and scratches long after the photograph has been taken. Instruction on techniques that simulate traditional hand coloring and tinting and add special effects such as frames, infrared, and lighting and lens effects helps photographers realize their artistic vision. Screen shots and images guide readers through the presented techniques, allowing photographers to gauge their own results and anticipate the effects of the outlined corrections and enhancements on their own images. A gallery of the author's work provides inspiration for simulating—and improving upon—the chemical-based darkroom experience.
