Editorial Review:

Daido Moriyama, who was born near Osaka in 1938, is one of the most influential representatives of contemporary Japanese photography. His unmistakable style, influenced by the work of Weegee, William Klein and Andy Warhol, has been evolving since the 1970s. His images, often made with a small, hand-held camera, draw viewers in with their diffuse, suggestive layers of gray. Moriyama is aptly characterized as a "hunter of light," and his preference for the atmospheric and enigmatic leads to beautiful abstractions of the Japanese urban landscapes. Shinjuku 19XX-20XX features previously unpublished photographs taken in the Tokyo district of Shinjuku, whose labyrinthine streets and dark eddies have always drawn Moriyama in. He says of the district, "Even though it wasn't a town that I liked because I wanted to like it, or became obsessed with because I wanted to be obsessed with it, the town of Shinjuku has a strange narcotic effect, and there is something about it that traps me and puts me under a spell."

Editorial Review:

Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph.

Storylines accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books. Essays by Philip Brookman and Sam Shepard. Hardcover, 9.75 x 11 in. / 240 pgs / 25 color and 225 duotones.

for those passionate about black & white 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book as an amateur wanting to learn more about black and white photography.

The book clearly elucidates the joy and sorrow (more joy than sorrow) of where the passion of black and white photography will take you.

Layer by layer, George Schaub peels the moods and experiences, sharing his tactics and finesse of observation with the reader.

You get to feel how much of an art AND science black and white photography really is. And you learn to learn from the kind of mistakes you make.

The book is as much a joy to read as to think about in your free time or while you're out there in the outdoors with a camera dying to be used.

George Schaub's book is packed with insight about his craft. The world we begin to see from behind the camera lens and the moments we so capture are given a timeless rendition in this book.

An absolute must for those who care!

Incomparable Beauty 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Mariana Cook has understood the deeply authentic beauty in the most quotidian of objects, scenes, and actions. A bird flying, a stack of pancakes, a hand -- all captured in exquisite angles, shapes, and sensitivity. Would that every photo were seen by writers, actors, and performers of every professional inclination -- learn the fun and surprises of beauty too seldom observed as she does with such mastery.

Editorial Review:

"These photographs burn in the retina and then in the body and mind. They unfold with uncanny and luminous elegance."—from the Introduction by Arthur Sze

In a bold departure from her traditional portraiture, acclaimed photographer Mariana Cook turns her eye to the lovely, overlooked world found close at hand. Beginning January 1, 1999, one year before the new millennium, Cook set herself the task of taking one very serious photograph every day, forcing her to look anew at everything surrounding her. The resulting work is a passionate celebration of looking closely. This is not a diary or self-interested exhibition, rather it is a celebration of form and transformation, a warm and thankful awareness of the world around us. It is impossible to resist these tender images—a child's feet in the sand, bands of light on the living room floor, a single glistening oyster—or to remain unaffected by the subtle poignancy of the familiar made mysterious. 96 duotone photographs.

If you're a beginner, you MUST read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book so that I could start to understand the basics of manual photography before I enrolled in a photography class (I didn't want to look like a complete idiot!). Fortunately, I realized that this book is all I really need to get started and saved myself the cost of the course! It is written in a very clear, concise manner with illustrations to demonstrate every point. Each section of the book contains not only definitions and instruction, but tips and pointers to perfect your technique. The book covers cameras (and all of their controls), different lense types and how they affect the pictures you take, a thorough description of different film types and how they work, what exposure is and how to perfect it, developing the negatives, printing pictures, obtaining ideal lighting, special techniques, and how to see like a camera. Best of all, it teaches you how all of the different factors (shutter speed, aperture, lighting, distance to subject, developing, etc.) relate to each other and how a limitation on one could be offset by adjusting another. A+ book!

For more than 20 years, Charlie Waite’s images have enthralled lovers of landscape photography everywhere. Now, in a very special collection, he presents the first volume devoted solely to his black-and -white pictures. In the great tradition of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, he finds in black and white a perfect vehicle for revealing his creative vision. These photographs are rich in reflective surfaces and filled with texture, luminosity, and mystery. Amateur photographers will appreciate the plate index with information on the camera used, the lens, film, exposure, and filter.

Editorial Review:

This harrowing work of photojournalism follows the stories of street children in Brazil—young girls who have fallen into lives of prostitution as their only means of survival. Though every girl’s story is unique, they share common ground: almost all of them come from abusive, poverty-stricken families or are orphans. Many of the girls suffer from drug or alcohol abuse, and some are as young as eight years old. Leaders in the struggle to fight this phenomenon have contributed to this important book in an effort to document and raise awareness of a dangerous and abusive practice that claims more than one million children every year.
