Black and White Essentials 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In an age dominated by glossy, commercial color pictures, there is obviously a longing for the sober black and white picture, which according to Freeman tends to focus more on an in depth interpretation of a scene than the more conspicuous color photography. And while it is easy to hide a bad composition and lack of texture and tone in a picture behind nice colors, it is much more difficult to do so in a black and white picture.

In his book Freeman introduces us to the basics of SLR photography in general and black and white photography in particular as to portraiture, landscapes and architecture etc. He does so in a matter of fact way illustrated with relevant, pin sharp photos of his own making. This is book that ought to be a source of inspiration for all those people who admire the classic black and white pictures of e.g. Ansel Adams and who want to understand the essentials of this mode of expression.

Editorial Review:

The art of black and white has become increasingly mainstream, embraced by photographers of all levels. Amateurs eager to make the most of the medium will find coverage of every important area in this guide by popular photography author John Freeman. Filled with numerous diagrams and dynamic images, it offers discussions of equipment, from a basic flashgun to a professional studio setup; depth of field; and exposure. Master advanced skills such as making digital composites, turning color images into black and white, using filters, and retouching to create professional quality photos. The diverse subjects include portraits, nudes, landscapes, architecture, interiors, and still lifes.

Excellent research material. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Great real people and real life photos from the midwest and eastern U.S. An excellent theatrical research text for scenic and costume design. Archetecture, furniture, signage, decoration and clothing are all well represented.

Editorial Review:

In this, his 19th book on the American scene, David Plowden turns to a part of American culture that was once commonplace but is now in danger of being lost or forever transformed. With his photos and engaging text, Plowden has created a vivid portrait of "small town America" that will be instantly recognized--and mourned. 111 duotone photos.

Good overview, not enough description of lighting technique 3 out of 5 stars.
27 of 28 people found this review helpful.

What I want, just once, is the photographer to describe , start to finish, the technical process of making the image. Like most authors on this subject, Mr. Trampe gives a usefull overview of many issues I already understand but fails to show the nuts and bolts of his technique. I'm not alone in wanting to know what film he chose for a given scene, at what speed he rated the film, especially how he made metering descisions, placement descisions for his models and for studio lighting, what specific diffusion and light modification was used for each specific shot. Of equal interest are the techniques regarding developement, printing and presentation. Finally, I wish Mr. Trampe would go into more detail about finding models and discuss realistic scenarios for pay scales. The images in this book are terrific. Please tell us how you made them or is that a secret?

Editorial Review:

Exploring the timeless fine art of nude images in black and white, this guide teaches photographers how to find and interview prospective models, choose locations and equipment, approach a photo session, create moods with light, enhance shots with special effects, incorporate fabrics and props, and develop a portfolio. Typical shooting scenarios and model testimonies are also included.

Editorial Review:

A lavishly illustrated history of the overpainted photograph.

"This volume contributes a tremendous amount of knowledge to the history of the altered photograph."—Choice

"There is simply nothing else in the literature like The Painted Photograph. The authors, Heinz and Bridget Henisch, are, indisputably, two of the greatest and most admired of living photohistorians."—John Wood, author of The Art of the Autochrome: The Birth of Color Photography

As photography grew more popular following its invention in 1839, its admirers did not understand how a medium that rendered shapes and textures in exquisite detail could fail to render them in realistic color. Also disappointing was the tendency of the captured images to fade over time. Photographers, ever eager to please their public, began "painting" their photographs with substances ranging from water colors and oil to chalk and crayon. Images were enlarged, enhanced, and framed, to simulate the splendors of the traditional portrait.

With its rich variety of illustrations in color and duotone, The Painted Photograph is the first comprehensive history of overpainting, from its origins to World War I. The 131 illustrations featured draw upon original nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sources, most from America and Britain, but also representing Japan, Turkey, Austria, Germany, Poland, Canada, Bohemia, India, Australia, Norway, Holland, and Russia.

In describing a multitude of early techniques, the authors survey overpainting on various types of photographs, including daguerreotypes, tintypes, and imprinted porcelain, milk glass, enamel, magic lantern slides, and textiles. Particularly fascinating are discussions of overpainted death portraits, most commonly those of children, and the origins of popular "picture postcards" featuring overpainted landscape scenes. The Henisches address also the eager acceptance of the painted photograph throughout the world, despite the hostility of the art-critical establishment.

The Painted Photograph will appeal to a wide public interested in photography, history, sociology, social anthropology, folk art, popular fashion, and antiques.

Sexy boys in the big city! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Jack Slomovits delivers the boys of New York in a series of highly suggestive images. These guys are fresh to the city and eager to explore their own boundaries, bodies...and other boys. The photographer documents their sexual adventures in a photojournalistic style that puts you right in the center of their action. A visual turnon from start to finish!

Sexy pics, but... 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was really disappointed by this book. I was hoping for something a little different, after seeing a lot of Jack Slomovits' other work (he gets a LOT of mileage out of that window in his apartment!), but there isn't anything truly special about these pictures. I think the best way to describe it is to say that these aren't "photographs" they're just pictures. Sure, they're sexy -- what pictures of 2 guys having sex WOULDN'T be? -- but they're not beautiful, and I was hoping for more. I'm putting my copy on ebay... 'fraid this one isn't a keeper.

Editorial Review:

Seldom has a photographer created such an authentic work as Jack Slomovits has in this book. From the middle of the sexual action the artist captures us from the first photos onward. Slomovits' semi-documentary style leaves little to the imagination; high-contrast detailed photos are interspersed with portraits in a snapshot aesthetic. His protagonists are the lads of the West Village in New York, lads of impressive naivety and tantalizing innocence. A fast book from a fast city. Sexy!
