A definitive reference for the collector and scholar... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a marvelous book. It is chock-full of information on the various photographic processes of the early 19th century. It takes us from cased images (daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes) to photography on paper (calotypes, wet plates, albumen prints, cartes de viste, cabinet cards, sterographs) to late 19th century processes (dry plate, silver prints, platinum prints) and has a special section on US Civil War images. An exhaustive reference sure to please.

Great for Beginners 5 out of 5 stars.

Perfect book for the beginner in the world of early photography. Details each type of early photo, describes the process used to make it, and explains how to identify it. The author also shares tips on buying: what to look for, what's exceptional, and what to avoid. Gives prices and lots of great picture examples, and details restoration efforts that beginners can and should do, as well as what NOT to do. Loved it and would highly recommend!

Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This has it all. I've seen a read a lot of collectable type books and this is the best. It contains everything you need to know about early photographs. This doesn't just tell you the prices but explains why certain photographs are valuable and all the history too.

Editorial Review:

Think back to the last time you browsed through your photo collection. You probably didn’t get very far before you thought to yourself, “This picture would have been great if only. . . .” If only the exposure had been better. I only that big plant, sign, or other distracting object wasn’t cluttering up background. If only the print hadn’t been sitting for 30 years in the basement being attacked by mildew, dirt, and paper-munching bugs. In years past, you either had to live with the damaged photos or pay big bucks to have them professionally repaired. Today, thanks to the development of consumer-friendly photo-editing software, you can use your computer to do the job yourself.

Whether you want to fix a 100-year-old family photo or a business shot you took yesterday, Photo Retouching & Restoration For Dummies shows you how. You’ll discover how to:

  • Scan and prep photos for editing
  • Work with photo-editing software
  • Fix the five most common photo flaws
  • Get creative with collages and backgrounds
  • Print photos or share them on the Internet

Here are just some of the things you can do by following the simple, easy-to-understand instructions provided by the book:

  • Bring new life to old, faded photographs
  • Adjust colors throughout the picture or in a certain object
  • Improve exposure and contrast
  • Sharpen focus
  • Cover up flaws such as negative scratches, scanner dust, and dirt
  • Remove unwanted elements from the scene
  • Get rid of red-eye, soften wrinkles, and do other facial retouching
  • Replace a busy background with one that compliments the subject

The techniques in the book use screen shots from Photoshop Elements as illustrations, but you can get the same results using Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoImpact, or most other intermediate or professional-level photo-editing software. To help you get started, the book comes with a CD-ROM featuring tryout versions of all the programs mentioned above, as well as other useful photography software. And to help you get the hang of color correction and other photo restoration techniques, the book includes 16 pages of full-color before-and-after examples. In short, you get just what you need to jump right in and start turning your flawed photos into frame-worthy masterworks!

Detailed Care for PAPER Photos Based on Scientific Research 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 44 people found this review helpful.

To learn more about old photographs and their care, I ordered three books; An Ounce of Preservation by Craig Tuttle, Collector's Guide to Early Photographs by O. Henry Mace, and Care and Identification of 19th Century Photographic Prints by James Reilly.

It doesn't take long to see why this book is often quoted as an outstanding reference regarding care of old photographs. This book is the outgrowth of intensive scientific research performed under the direction of the author at Rochester Institute of Technology. The research was funded by the National Endowment for Humanities, the National Museum Act, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

The focus of the book is care and identification of "Albumen" prints and other paper based photographs. The title is misleading, in that virtually nothing is contained regarding photographic prints on materials other than paper. Not only are daguerreotype, ambrotype and tintype not even mentioned in the chapter "The History of Photographic Printing in The 19th Century," they aren't mentioned until almost half way through the book, and then only briefly. The information on paper prints, however, is extensive. Detailed descriptions are included of the composition of paper prints and the variations in the chemical processes used to create them.

To help identify the types of deterioration that occur, color photographs are frequently included. A separate chart is even included that shows full color examples of the various print processes used for 19th century paper prints. Almost one-fourth of the book is devoted to proper care, storage, and display of paper photographs. It goes beyond stating the simply effects of different levels of humidity and temperature. It includes details regarding various types of air pollutants, effects of different wavelengths of light, and specific types of plastic and paper that are suitable as storage containers.

For someone serious about identifying and providing the utmost! care to old paper photographs, this appears to be the definitive source of information. If you are primarily interested in learning about identifying all types of 19th century prints and their value as antiques, then "Collector's Guide to Early Photographs" is a better source. Finally, if your interests are more casual and you prefer a concise description of old photographs and their proper care, "An Ounce of Preservation" is a better choice.

Digital Asset Management Lite. 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I guess it was inevitable. As more and more people started to accumulate digital photographs, they began to wonder how they would keep track of their image files. The publishing industry has responded by telling them how to do it.

Tim Grey is a highly respected writer in the digital photography field, having written many books, primarily dealing with Photoshop. Now he has written a volume aimed at photographers who have not considered the question of digital photograph management very deeply.

Grey starts out describing the nature of digital photo files and considerations relating to their storage. He then describes the media available to do the job ranging from hard drives, through CDs and DVDs to networks, and suggests filing structures. He describes the role of browsers, primarily Adobe Bridge, in the process and then talks about cataloging software. After a brief look at the limited possibilities of internet storage Grey then discusses backing up image files.

As always Grey writes clearly and concisely and is very accessible. However, the information provided is at the most elementary level. Inevitably this book must be compared to the first important book published in the field, "The DAM Book", written by Peter Krogh. That book set the standard for digital asset management books, even if occasionally beyond the needs of the average photographer. While Grey provides basic information, "The DAM Book" is more detailed, philosophical and forward looking. For example, Krogh recommends adoption of the Adobe DNG format, and argues well for incorporating it into one's asset management scheme.

On the other hand both authors are wedded to file structuring schemes that seem to be the dead hand of the past ruling us from the grave. When the newest software allows us to create keyword schemes that permit almost instant recovery of desired files without consideration of where they are stored, how useful are file and folder names. And Grey doesn't even mention the key wording facility of Bridge, or the ability to add keywords in the Photoshop information window. In fact Grey seems to not want to confuse the reader with the powerful tools available in Bridge or cataloging software like Extensis Portfolio. On the other hand, after reading Krogh, I was easily able to figure out how to set up Portfolio not just as a catalog but for rights management.

If all you want is the basics of media management, without considering more complex but effective opportunities presented by the digital darkroom, Grey will do the job. If you want to figure out how to find new tools and are not afraid of some mental work, Krogh may be a better choice.

Editorial Review:

This book presents smart solutions to the difficulties of media management. It examines all the hardware, discusses archiving, gives the lowdown on portable hard drives, input and output devices, digital media cards and advanced systems. Learn software fundamentals, and see how the Internet can become a versatile tool for sharing, displaying, and selling photography.

A great insight into the man that brought the art of tattoo's to the prominent place it is today. Well written & wonderfully laid out. I recommend this book not only to tattoo collectors and fans of the artform but to anybody interested in American modern art.

Editorial Review:

Determined to be a tattoo artist at the age of ten and tattooing professionally since
1967, California native Don Ed Hardy has become one of the world's leading tattoo
artists. Inspired by traditional Japanese work, he was instrumental in developing the
medium's fine art potential and fueling the late-century international tattoo boom.
Tattooing the Invisible Man presents a survey of Hardy's paintings, etchings,
lithographs, drawings, photographs, and elaborate tattoos, over 500 color
illustrations, most never before published.

Editorial Review:

Grandmothers have stories to tell. Grandmother's Scrapbook, a keepsake journal with lovely quilt inspired illustrations by Judy Pelikan, offers grandmothers not only the chance to tell their stories in their own words, but a beautiful family book to record the words and images. Scrapbooking is to today's families what quilting was to the women of nineteenth century America. And family heritage has a revived place in crafter's interests. Grandmother's Scrapbook is easy, quick, and appealing as well as a wonderful and inexpensive way for grandmother to share her life story in a visual way with her grandchild, and to forge the intergenerational connection. Children learn to honour and learn from their grandmother. Grandmothers have an opportunity to show love for their children's children. The book includes ideas on creating scrapbook pages -- telling stories, preserving memories -- and then offers the pages on which to place these memories. The text begins with the process of making a scrapbook -- organising your thoughts, conceptualising a page, and then how to design a page, crop, mat, frame, use stickers, photos, borders, how to journal, and how to create special effects such as paper folding, paper piercing, quilling, and quilting. There are even suggestions on things to gather and save to use in creating scrapbook pages with your grandchild. The second part of the book presents single, beautifully illustrated, removable mounting sheets in poly sleeves, organised by topics/themes. We include a design for a family tree, space for family stories and lore, and printed frames ready to be filled with family photos. Pocket section separators offer places to hold photos and other memorabilia. The completed Grandmother's Scrapbook will offer a detailed look at the family heritage. The book can be completed and given to a grandchild as a special gift from grandmother, or created by the grandmother together with her grandchild. Grandmother's Scrapbook is a work of love from the opening "This book of memories is for you, so you'll always remember." to the closing "You made me a grandmother and I will cherish you forever. Someday it will be your turn to tell these family stories.".
