Since "The Babe Signed (Ernie's) Shoe," Mr. Harwell has touched the hearts of Detrot Tigers' fans for many wonderful years! This is a super book by a super baseball announcer by a super man!

Editorial Review:

Spanning from the time he talked Babe Ruth into signing his tennis shoe at the age of 12 to his last Tiger broadcast more than 60 years later, this book is a personal scrapbook of Hall-of-Famer Ernie Harwell's life-long love of baseball.

A Wonderful Collection of Great Baseball Stories 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The Storytellers is a hillarious and moving collection of baseball stories told by the people who have held our ears for decades. The funniest stories (Ernie Harwell explaining to a baseball usher that it wasn't beer he had spilled . . .)had my wife and I laughing out loud. The most moving (Bob Costas boyhood visit to Yankee stadium) still bring a tear to my eye. A must read for fans of baseball, fans of broadcasting, or fans of oral storytelling. This is a wonderful book to read aloud.

Most enjoyable. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Curt Smith gathers some of the legendary Voices of baseball together to (what else?) tell stories. The anecdotes are invarably interesting, funny, moving, and illuminating, whether or not the reader has actually had the pleasure of listening to any or all of these broadcasters. My only quibble with this book is that author Smith seems to have lifted several passages in toto from his earlier, and even more fascinating, "Voices Of The Game." This seems like unnecessary duplication and can be mildly annoying for those of us who've read both. Still, it's well worth the time of anybody who loves the Summer Game.

Editorial Review:

The personal stories of more than sixty baseball broadcasters highlight their childhood dreams about America's favorite pastime, their most embarrassing moments, and their observations on the games of today. 12,500 first printing.

An entertaining look at 2 of the best sportscasters on tv. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those books that, becuase of Dan and Keith's style of delivery, is better heard than read. Both were very accurate in their rebuke of the baseball hall of fame selection process. The 3rd top 10 list was a little boring. Overall the book is very entertaiing.

This audio-book is simply "en fuego" 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought the audio version of Keith and Dan's book in addition to the printed version. While the book contains a lot more material than the tapes, it's great to listen to Keith and Dan banter back and forth for three hours. Take this one in the car with you on long trips--it will definitely make the trip more interesting. This ia a must-have for any true Olbermaniac (like myself.)

The best thing since sliced bread 5 out of 5 stars.

Mike Gottfriend speaks from his heart in this inspiring book. I intend to buy more books to share with school personnel and church ministers so they can have insight on what my sons go through on a daily basis. Anyone who wants to learn more on fatherless boys and the struggles they have must read this book. It encourages and motivates me as a mother and I'm grateful that Mike truly understands and cares. My sons love Mike and wish they could find more men like him. They now have a book that they will treasure for a lifetime!

The coach tells a very inspiring story and informs us with some very good stats on the power of fathers. This is an excellent read for any father - football fan or not.

Editorial Review:

Coach Mike Gottfried's professional life took him from college football coach to TV sports analyst. As you read stories of great moments in football, you'll feel like you're in the press box with Coach. Coach's desires to also score big in his personal life led him to found an organization to help fatherless boys. He encourages you to leave a legacy worthy of scoring those extra points in life.

Bill Mercer is Great 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Anything Bill Mercer does reaks of class and sophistication. His career continues even today after over 50 years of hard work. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Bill Mercer at many places with the first of them being KVIL radio. I remember him tearing through the front door of the radio station being scheduled to be on the air in 10 minutes. We're talking 4:30am. All of this after being up all night on a return trip from a UNT (NTSU) "Mean Green" game. His book describes the behind the scenes of sports in a way that you can't put the book down. Bill Mercer's book should be required reading in every school in the US and Canada and a few other countries

Editorial Review:

Both a memoir and a how-to for anyone who aspires to a career in broadcast journalism, particularly in sports, this book calls on Mercer's vast experience and name-recognition in Texas to give an insider's view of everything from calling play-by-play to interviewing a celebrity athlete. Mercer began his career as the voice of professional wrestling in Dallas in the 1950s, and later went on to be a play-by-play announcer for teams ranging from the Dallas Cowboys to the Chicago White Sox in addition to a brief hard news stint at the time of the Kennedy assassination in Dallas in 1963.

Editorial Review:

Just mention the word baseball and a huge smile beams across his cherubic face. Ask him about the grace of Ken Griffey, Jr.; the power of Frank Thomas; and the precociousness of Alex Rodriguez and he'll delight you for hours with tales of the beauty of the game. The Golden Days of baseball are now, he'll tell you, and then he'll go on to prove it. He's Jon Miller, and in this candid, funny, forthright volume he tells us why baseball is the greatest game and why -- despite the counterproductive comments of owners and players -- it will continue to be well into the twenty-first century.

In Confessions of a Baseball Purist, Miller takes us on a journey into the heart of baseball as he's seen it from the best seat in the house. He brings to life the emotion of the night Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record, the history-soaked drama when the Giants and Dodgers faced off in a crucial pennant-race series in September '97, Eddie Murray's fitting return to the Orioles to hit his 500th home run, and the day Edward Bennett Williams -- owner of the Orioles -- approved the plans for the creation of Camden Yards. But Jon doesn't shy from pointing a finger at the darker forces at work in the game: the insanity of not having a real commissioner; the follies of radical realignment and excessive reliance on novelties like widespread interleague play; the old-time players and broadcasters -- including his good friend and partner Joe Morgan -- who don't accept that today's players are bigger, faster, stronger, and better; players who denigrate the game, not realizing that by doing so they're insulting their own fans; and owners and general managers who can't make a move without discussing the economic ramifications, even though that's the last thing their fans (or, to use the owners' term, their customer base) want to hear about.

With charming candor and disarming wit, Miller takes us from the broadcaster's booth into the stands and down onto the field and into the dugout. He pays tribute to his heroes and his partners, who include some of the classic voices that shaped his love of the game: Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons, Vin Scully, Hank Greenwald, Chuck Thompson, and Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek. He tells about the Opening Day rain delay that launched a second career as an after-dinner speaker in Boston, as his partner Ken Coleman led him into doing his now-famous Vin Scully impersonation; the maddening experience of working for Charles O. Finley, an owner who managed the remarkable feat of building a World Championship team that finished next-to-last in the league in home attendance; and the pleasure of being a part of the growth and development of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball into the game's weekly showcase for a nationwide audience. He profiles some of his favorite baseball personalities, from Reggie Jackson and Kirby Puckett to Alvin Dark and Charles Steinberg; shares inside stories from the broadcast booth about the secrets of Phil Rizzuto's scorebook ("WW" means "Wasn't Watching") and what to do when your partner is knocked cold by a foul line drive; and tells, for the first time, the story behind his leaving the Baltimore Orioles after fourteen years doing the team's games.

True to the broadcaster's art, Confessions of a Baseball Purist calls the game the way Jon Miller sees it: with wit, with style, and with absolute candor. For the baseball purist in all of us, Miller provides a rallying cry, some warm memories, and reasons to keep believing in the game we love.

Underwhelming 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 27 people found this review helpful.

Picking up the autobiography of legendary baseball announcer Jack Buck, you'd think you're in for a light summer read full of good-natured homilies, humorous anecdotes, and "I was there" accounts of great games and players. That doesn't set the bar very high but would make for a good baseball book. "That's A Winner" doesn't deliver on even these modest expectations. First, Buck himself doesn't come across as a very likeable guy. Free with his back-handed criticisms, judgmental of others, once slamming the door in the face of a desperate pregnant woman, and generally keeping his head down as the inveterate corporate guy trying to keep his job. Second, he doesn't really have much to offer. Less than half the book is about baseball, so the reader has to wade through chapters on Buck's youth aboard a boat, in World War II, going to school, reciting names of family and friends as though reading a phone book. There are futile discussions of Castro and the death penalty and Vietnam, issues to which Buck brings no insight and that merely serve to distract the reader looking for some sports. Third, when the baseball finally comes, it's feeble and fleeting. A few thoughts on drugs use in the late 1970s, praise for Whitey Herzog and Ozzie Smith, and that's about it. For a guy who's been around some of the greatest players in the history of the game and become famous for his steady deep-voiced announcing, Buck has written a book that manages to suck the life out of the games and players. No stories, no funny anecdotes, nothing to interest a fan. If you're researching Buck's life and need to know about his military service, this is the book for you. If you want to pass a weekend with a good baseball book, pick up Roger Angell instead.

Editorial Review:

In his forthright and honest autobiography, St. Louis Cardinal, World Series, and Super Bowl broadcaster, Jack Buck entertains all of his fans once more in a different setting. Jack Buck: " It's A Winner!" is the story of a remarkable man's life. A member of 11 Hall's of Fame, incl- ding both the baseball and football Halls of Fame.

Editorial Review:

Russ Hodges’s frantic pronouncement at Bobby Thomson’s "Shot Heard ’Round the World": "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" and Jack Buck’s incredulous remark after Kirk Gibson’s heroic home run in the 1988 World Series: "I don’t believe what I just saw!" are just a couple examples. The sometimes downright hysterical commentaries of broadcasters very often become more memorable than even the games they describe. Though countless studies have weighed the merits of our great players, none has assessed the virtues of the men who turn diving catches and soaring home runs into the stuff of myth. In The Voices of Summer, Curt Smith has compiled a list of 101 classic announcers—from national celebrities to local favorites, overlooked giants to upcoming stars—in search of the greatest baseball broadcaster of all time. From the poetic reflections of Dick Enberg to the Falstaffian frenzy of Harry Caray, Smith answers the timeless questions: Was Mel Allen better than Ernie Harwell? Does Joe Buck compare to his legendary dad? Which of today’s young broadcasters really matches the all-time greats? Irreverent, authoritative, and uncommonly addictive, this book will be the definitive guide to baseball announcing for any and all baseball fans.

"Radio is purely the announcer's medium. Accordingly, most of the best sports broadcasting has been done not on television, but on radio. David Halberstam writes from the knowledgeable and nuanced perspective of one who practices, respects, and understands the craft and its history." --Bob Costas NBC Sports "Some of my friends and associates do not believe there was civilization before television, but I assure them that listening to Red Barber on radio from Ebbets Field or to Marty Glickman from Madison Square Garden was better than watching television. It was magic. Sports on New York Radio brings back memories of that magic. Reading about the many gifted radio voices who covered the Dodgers, Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Jets, the fights, and so much more reinforces my early conviction that I would never be a broadcaster. How I made it to even the brink of such company still baffles me." --Dick Schaap ABC News The Sports Reporters, ESPN "I grew up with Red Barber, Mel Allen, and Marty Glickman. They were warm, friendly, great voices. Through the radio they brilliantly linked the fan with the game. A decent man sheds new light on baseball's golden years 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

That George's book turned out to be a long, tall, cold drink of water on a hot summer day came as no surprise to me. We in Michigan, who watched George throughout his years as the premier Tiger TV announcer and as one of the great players of his time, have long known of his commitment to to all that is good and right about America's pastime. But he also served as a prophet concerning the aspects of the modern game which led to a slow decay not only in the quality of the game, but in the character of some of the game's players and management. Even so, how can a baseball aficionado not feel the warm sunshine of yesteryear as we read of a living Hall of Famer's account of playing under Manager Connie Mack, alongside and against Ted Williams...Joe DiMaggio...even Minnie Minoso! George's book is special. I can virtually guarantee you will not read the likes of "Hello everybody, I'm George Kell" ever again. It is an easy-reading account of baseball's glory days, when a nation came out of a war against the forces of evil, and after looking in the mirror, realized the color line must be obliterated in what was then the undisputed King of American sport. George's decency shines through the entire book, just as his light has shined his entire life. Bravo!

Editorial Review:

When George Kell broke in with the old Philadelphia Athletics back in 1943, never did he dream he had just embarked on a 53-year major league ride. From induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame to an equally accomplished broadcasting career, it was a fantastic journey.
