Brickhouse Review 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you love baseball and the Chicago Cubs, this book is for you. Jack Brickhouse was Cubs' baseball during the time I was growing up on the north side of Chicago and he was a welcome member of our family, through the TV and radio.

Later in life, we became close friends and he was a mentor to me. A finer gentleman you will never meet. The book is a history of the Cubs from the mid-40's through the 90's and it also tells the story of WGN-TV, one of the nation's great independent stations.

Hey! Hey! This book is a grandslam homer in the ninth inning.

JACK BRICKHOUSE IN DA HOUSE 4 out of 5 stars.

THIS IS ALOT OF THIS AND THAT FROM VETERAN BROADCASTER JACK BRICKHOUSE. HIS CAREER IN CHICAGO IS LEGENDARY. HE GIVES A ALOT OF GREAT STORIES OF HIS CAREER, OPINIONS, LIFE IN GENERAL, AND SOME HUMOROUS LETTERS SENT TO HIM OVER THE YEARS. A VERY NICE READ FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS. RECOMMENDED.

Editorial Review:

This book is an inside look at Brickhouse's half-a-century in broadcasting. From his basketball covering origin in Peoria to his friendships with fellow broadcasters, Brickhouse recalls the memories and the moments of his celebrated career.

A beautiful little book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a beautiful little book about a man dedicated to his craft and the relationship he developed with a radio commentator 40 years his junior. Bob Edwards brings Red Barber to life and anyone fortunate enough to have heard their all too short weekly get togethers will enjoy the background information on the amazing Red Barber.
Edwards voice is familiar to millions but he grew to respect and admire this (perhaps) old fashioned southern gentleman and his gentle ways. Barber was truly a man of strong convictions and a basic goodness that shines through in this book. Heartwarming and fascinating.

Editorial Review:

Wit, wisdom, a silky southern voice--these were the qualities that captivated millions of faithful Red Barber fans each Friday as he chatted with Morning Edition host Bob Edwards on subjects ranging from gardening to sports to the mysteries of life. This affectionate memoir will delight readers.

Editorial Review:

"Out of Bounds" is a collection of essays that regards the media representation of professional sports through the lens of cultural studies. Editors, Aaron Baker and Todd Boyd, contend that the popularity of sports derives not simply from their appeal as leisure entertainment, but from their contribution to discussion of larger issues of class, race, gender, and masculinity. The essays in the collection challenge media wisdom about the apolitical nature of sports, by examining how they contribute to the contested process of defining social identities. Included within a broad range of works are: "'Never Trust a Snake': WWF Wrestling as Masculine Melodrama", (Henry Jenkins); "Mike Tyson and the Perils of Discursive Constraints: Boxing, Race and The Assumption of Guilt", (John Sloop); and "Visible Difference and Flex Appeal: The Body, Sex, Sexuality, and Race in the Pumping Iron Films", (Christine Holmlund).

Excellent book about Hundley's basketball experiences. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Hot Rod Hundley was the first player drafted in the 1957 NBA draft. He played six years for the Lakers in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Following his playing career, Hot Rod has remained active is the sport. He is currently the play by play announcer for the Utah Jazz. Since 1957, he has seen or played with or against almost every great NBA player. In his book, which is basically his basketball autobiography, Hundley analyzes the game and its great and not so great players. Hot Rod Hundley was a showy basketball player; he was fancy and "cool" long before they became essentials in the professional game. His writing is much the same as his game was. His book is a good interesting read. His style is both conversational and informative. He gives his opinions freely and unhesitantly. He can be lavish with his praise and unsparing with his criticism. If you are a basketball fan or a Hot Rod Hundley fan, you will enjoy this book.

Editorial Review:

Rod Hundley announces Jazz games on radio, TV, and cable and he has the unique distinction of being the only announcer in Jazz history. Rod's unique style and familiar voice have made him one of the most popular and well-recognized broadcasters in the business today. His broadcasting career includes stints with the New Orleans Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Phoenix Suns. A three-year All-American at West Virginia, Hundley was the first pick of the 1957 NBA College draft by Cincinnati. His flamboyant playing style earned him the name Hot Rod while at West Virginia.

Gene Fox did a wonderful job of taking these well known men and showing them as real people leading interesting yet still real lives.

A Treasure. 5 out of 5 stars.

For Kansas Citians, these are the media icons of the last 70 years. It's good this was written before a couple of these guys died and we were left with their wonderful stories. Also, the intro was written by Lamar Hunt...one of the last writings he did before he passed on.

Editorial Review:

It's unlikely the Midwest will ever see a more eminent band of Sports Guys. They are Bill Grigsby, Joe McGuff, Len Dawson, Don Fortune and Harold Ensley.

It's Warner Lite! Very Light 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Let's Go to the Videotape" consists of 112 short anecdotes, observations and stories packed into 303 pages. To say that "Let's Go" is quick reading is to overstate the obvious. If this compilation had no weaknesses other than brevity, it could be highly recommended. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Mr. Wolf is an entertaining and very popular TV sports newsman. I looked forward to his 11:00 PM slot on NYC's Channel 2 for years. He is also a very able-and serious- public speaker. Mr. Wolf is in a different element here and his writing skills fall resoundingly short of his broadcasting abilities. Is this for a lack of effort? To be specific, many of the "chapters" could have easily been combined into a more concise format. Also, the grammar, or lack of same, cries out for an EDITOR! Did Warner, or his ghostwriter, ever notice the spell check icon? This is an affliction common to many books these days. Editing is an expense to be cut! More importantly, Warner (the publisher) should either invest in a fact checker or Warner (the author) should refresh his memory.i.e: 1) He mistold the tale of Mickey Mantle's 1956/1957 holdout by $40,000- a fortune in those days. 2) The "Bad News" Barnes basketball player was Jim, out of Texas Western (now Texas El Paso) and later the Knicks. 3) Chapter 84 ("Hello Allie") utterly glosses over how unpopular Allie Sherman was during his disastrous tenure as coach of the NY football Giants. The franchise needed 20 years to recover from that clown and his disastrous trade of the great Sam Huff. The author blew that one! If I had read with a red pencil, I could compile a longer list, but I'm certain the point is made. This is lightweight stuff. No harm no foul but no red meat either. I can't resist a closing pun: If you paid full hardcover price for this one, YOU LOST!

Editorial Review:

Anyone who follows sports knows that Warner Wolf has revolution- ized that world with his famous catch phrases and irrepressible spirit. Now, in Lets Go To The Videotape! he shares over three decades worth of humorous and unusual anecdotes from a fascinating career, including: opinions on sports rules, game strategies that make no sense, run-ins with the stars of sports and Hollywoodincluding Shaquille ONeal, Joe DiMaggio, Robert Redford, and Robert Duvall, adventures and misadventures in the sports broadcasting game, and much more.
