I bought this book thinking that it would just be nice to have on the shelf since I have 'always loved horses.' It turned out to be an unexpected pleasure to read. Although I have read many horse-related books I was very unaware of the feminine history in this field. This book filled a knowledge gap. I am 47 and have owned a horse only since my early 30's. Yet I felt very connected to these women who were able to take their dreams so far. They are my new heroines! The photographs are also terrific. My favorite is one of an 80+ yr. old woman obviously enjoying an active side saddle ride. Thank you, Ms. Burke, for this contribution.

Editorial Review:

When women decided that they wanted to compete in horse sports as equals with men, it took courage and perseverance. The women on both sides of the Atlantic who fought to compete in the male-dominated sports of show jumping, dressage, eventing, and racing are the subject of Equal to the Challenge. Jackie Burke interviewed many of these extraordinary women, and the book is richer for their simple, moving accounts of how they achieved their goals. Many had to endure rejection, humiliation, physical danger, and privation in order to take part in the horse sports they loved. Some women struggled doubly, since they had to overcome physical and financial handicaps. Young womenand not just riderswill find in this book worthy role models for our time. Jackie C. Burke is a journalist who has been involved in horse sports all her life and knows just about

Editorial Review:

"Let's Hear It for the Cheerleaders," The New York Times recently proclaimed, and in We've Got Spirit, James T. McElroy answers the call, revealing the thrilling drama of ambition, heartbreak, and triumph that is a year in the life of America's greatest cheerleading team. Today's competitive cheerleading is intense, athletic, and even dangerous -- a sport in its own right that combines the acrobatic grace of gymnastics, the energized dance of ice skating, and the all-American good looks of a beauty pageant.

"Cheerleading is hotter than ever," reports The Wall Street Journal on what is far and away the most popular girls' sport in America, with over three-and-a-half million participants. Thousands of high school teams across the nation practice year-round with hopes of becoming national champions, but only Kentucky's Greenup County Musketeers have won eight titles and are perennial contenders to take the top honors. Team members in the green and gold are adored throughout the country for being pretty, polite, sweet, and sexy -- but what Greenup's rivals strive to emulate is the fierce athleticism and competitive spirit that make Greenup the team to beat.

We've Got Spirit opens with the 1997 National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida, where Greenup County brilliantly reclaims its title. The crowd roars as all nineteen girls simultaneously perform their trademark standing back tuck, and the team is crowned champion once again.

Coach Candy Berry is the amazing motivator behind the Greenup cheerleading dynasty, a female incarnation of Vince Lombardi who can mold almost any group of girls into champions. With veteran team leader Shawnda Bates graduated and cheering for the University of Louisville, Berry has high hopes for the young talent on the 1998 squad. Linda Goble has top-notch gymnastics skills and valuable competition experience, but distractions mount when she gets caught up in a bitter custody battle. Vivacious and spirited Rachel Brown has dreamed of cheering for Greenup County since preschool, but confidence problems keep her a heartbeat away from achieving the perfection she strives for. Self-taught tumbler Rachel Wills seems like a natural to follow in Shawnda's footsteps, but as the 1998 nationals approach, Greenup County's remarkable reign at the top is threatened by obstacles even the most gifted leader never could have anticipated -- season-ending injuries, infighting, an unplanned pregnancy, and even a show-stopping blizzard.

Revealing the backstage conflicts competitive cheerleaders face, and the ambition that drives these "sports heroes with ponytails," McElroy tells stories of astonishing achievement and wasted talent, teamwork and courage, and what it means to be an American girl.

Editorial Review:

Veteran seafarers and anyone who has dreamed of running away to sea in her very own boat or simply savored the smell of the salty air on the water’s edge will be inspired by this well-crafted and varied collection. Steady as She Goes is both a testament to women’s enduring relationship with the sea and a gripping and illuminating read. Whether commercial fishing in Alaska’s unforgiving waters, racing tall ships off the coast of Australia, kayaking in the enchanting Sea of Cortez, or learning the antiquated mechanics of a New York City fireboat, these women work and play at sea, spinning harrowing adventure yarns and relaying quiet moments of revelation surrounded by the vastness of the ocean. With both original and reprinted material from such noted writers as Linda Greenlaw, Jill Fredston, Tania Aebi, Bernadette Bernon (former editor of Cruising World ), devorah major (San Francisco’s poet laureate), Andromeda Romano-Lax, and Deborah Scaling Kiley, among others, this is the first anthology dedicated to contemporary women's adventures at sea. This unique and long-overdue collection shatters—once and for all—the myth that the sea is solely the domain of men.

Editorial Review:

"The book [is] . . . well researched. Chapters by contributing authors enhance the breadth of the content both from a cultural and media perspective. Individuals interested in the history of women's sports and particularly in gender issues as related to varying media will find this volume informative. . . . Upper-division undergraduate through professional." --Choice "Chapters by different authors make a splendid reference work on the history of women in sports, women's sports magazines, examples of discrimination against women in sports and women sports reporters, and, of course, the proverbial locker-room access controversies are reviewed here." --Editor & Publisher "Pamela Creedon has hit a homerun that challenges assumptions about the relationship between women, media, and sports. This impressive collection of research helps redefine a playing field that until now had overwhelmingly male boundaries. This is a fabulous book!" --Susan Henry, California State University, Northridge "Women, Media, and Sport is a path-breaking book in mass media research. Not only does it provide a well-researched history of the women who report sports news and the media images of women in sports, but it also skillfully applies critical feminist theories to examine the context of these media messages and effects. It opens new research subjects and models for integrating media effects and cultural/critical studies research." --Marion T. Marzolf, The University of Michigan "This is a fascinating book that uses as its starting point a definition of sport as a cultural institution, rather than concentrating on the activities and games that make up the sports component. The book examines important 'sport' metaphors and symbols, placing women and the media on a contextual playing field. I was struck by the fact that all the chapters are written by women who are asking myriad questions about journalistic norms, about media values, and about news conventions in the world of sport. These questions have not been asked by mainstream male journalists or writers covering sports. This distinctive point of view makes Women, Media, and Sport a valuable addition to any women's studies, media studies, or cultural studies book list. This is a very thorough and comprehensive text, covering history, economics, marketing, and cultural paradigms for studying or critiquing women's sport. Best of all, it offers a new model for women's sport that is both provocative and practical. This book will not change any opinions about favorite football teams or sports announcers, but it does ask to examine attitudes toward women, the media, and the sport universe." --Sammye Johnson, Trinity University The first book to link feminist, sport, and media theory together, Women, Media, and Sport provides a broad cultural studies approach, which also touches on race and class relations in sport. In addition to the theoretical analyses, this volume provides a practical look at models of sport, media effects, and the construction of the sportswomen and women's sport. Designed as a text to fill the gap in this area, the book is organized into three sections. The first provides an overview of women, sport, and the media and an example of the ways they intertwine. The extensive range of articles in the second section focuses on print and broadcast media's portrayal of women's sports and its journalistic process and examines such issues as the relationship between sports promotion and media's representations of women's sport and how sport reporting is taught to future journalists. The final section seeks to develop a new model for the future. A thorough and original text, Women, Media, and Sport is essential for scholars, students, and professionals in media and mass communication studies, sociology, women's studies, cultural studies, popular culture, ethnic studies, and gender studies.

Editorial Review:

The revolution began with the simple act of a mother kicking a ball to her daughter. An English soccer trainer noticed, and praised her form. "Too bad," she replied, "there's no soccer league for mothers." Who could know that so many lives would change as a result of that simple exchange? In the suburban enclave of Montclair, New Jersey, as in so many communities around America, there was nothing new in the sight of mothers driving their minivans to soccer practice. What was new was that these women were driving to their own practices instead of dropping off their kids and watching from the sidelines. For the generation that grew up before Title IX's mandate of equal athletic opportunity, the field of play was a male preserve; girls watched and cheered. The lessons that sports are supposed to teach -- team spirit, overcoming adversity, playing to win without rancor or anger -- were restricted to this young boys' network; how could women help win the Battle of Waterloo when they'd been kept off the playing fields of Eton? The women of Montclair were mostly of that pre-Title IX generation, and many of them had never played competitive sports in their lives. In "Alive and Kicking," Harvey Araton follows these women through their turbulent first two seasons. He turns his keen sportswriter's eye onto the battles, both on the field and in the psyche, that these women wage as they try to play a sport without compromising their values. He also shows the divisions that wrack the league when a slightly younger generation gets involved in the games, a generation raised without ambivalence about beating an opponent, willing to take a dangerous chance for a winning goal, even if itmeans running over the woman in their way. But most of all he describes the women who gain in confidence and ambition, like one of the league's pioneers, who finds the strength to leave a tired marriage, buoyed by her accomplishments on the field -- as well as the few who find themselves left behind by the achievers, those for whom this exposure to sport will leave the scars known to all who've been the last to be selected for a pickup game. The rise of women's sports -- symbolized by the ecstatic reaction to the U.S. Women's World Cup soccer team -- has been a significant change in the social landscape. This thoughtful, thought-provoking book examines the questions that should underlie this radical change, but too often have not: As sports change women, can women change sports? Is the male play-to-win model the only one that works? Does it work? Through the experiences of these smart, mature women, we learn much about the workings of games and societies -- and the difficulty of questioning patterns so deeply entrenched that we barely know we can question them at all.

Written in a lively, readable style, this book profiles two women who broke new ground in tennis. Alice Marble (1913-1990) became the first woman to play "power tennis, " and by 1939 had won several Wimbledon titles. Althea Gibson (1927- ) broke the racial "color line" in tennis by entering many previously white-only tournaments, and became the first black person to win both the U.S. Open and Wimbledon competitions.

I saw myself on every page...Claudia has addressed every problem I've ever had in skiing and gave me answers, confidence, and a whole new attitude about ski buying. I actually improved my skiing, knowing more about my body and how it works. I recommend it for any female skier, beginner or advanced, and men should read it too, to understand how women relate to skiing.

Editorial Review:

Women Ski has changed the sport of women's skiing forever. This is a landmark book that should be in every bookstore's ski/sports section. This second edition continues Claudia Carbone's explanations that outline how and why women ski differently than men, offering solutions to help women get more enjoyment from the sport.

women fish 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

REEL WOMEN gives a history of women in the world of fishing. The book begins with Dame Juliana Berners and continues through modern day practitioners. I found this book to be very informative. It does seem to focus on women from North America and ignore other areas, but attention is given to fishing of all kinds, including fly fishing, big game angling, bass fishing, etc. The book makes for a fascinating read, and I enjoyed learning just how influential women have been. The resource directory for women at the end of the book is a wealth of information.

An astounding gem of a book 5 out of 5 stars.

Guys, if you've ever wondered what to buy your SO that will let her know, beyond doubt or question, that you are attempting to understand and meet her needs, purchase a copy of this book, wrap it beautifully, and hand it to her with confidence that, for once, you've found the perfect gift. If you like to fish, or need to on a regular basis for reasons unexplainable in words, this book will say more to her in one reading than you could speak aloud in one year.

And to those readers of the gentle gender who like to fish but have never been able to adequately explain the urge to anyone, Foggia is a kindred soul who can articulate reasons and expound on the philosophy of fishing, which is really a wordless meditation that restores the soul. It is the quintessence of patient waiting, without investment in outcome. You're just fishing. If you enjoyed A River Runs Through It, you'll love Reel Women.

I'm buying a copy for my girlfriend, my mom, my adult daughter, and for a special friend, a young mother who is learning to write. And one copy for me. Every good book should tell the reader something new, at least one bright concept; but this book is a full creel.

Editorial Review:

Fishing has long been considered a man's sport. However, women today constitute more than one-third of all anglers and have displayed an avid passion for fishing since the late 1880s. Foggia, herself an avid angler, tells the complete story of fisherwomen for the first time. Photos.
