Editorial Review:

"It's well known that Mother River doesn't like a smart aleck," says Patricia McCairen. Accordingly, she plies her oars with reverence and skill on a sometimes hair-raising solo rafting trip along the Colorado River that winds though the stupendous stone valleys of the American Grand Canyon. Like the waters of the Colorado, which change from long, still stretches to boiling white water that barely clothes sharp rocks and hides holes that can suck down a raft, McCairen's moods--and even her name--change as the miles unwind. One moment, she's the cocky, athletic river guide Babe; the next, she's an earthier, more spiritual woman who answers to the name of Patch. Hours later, she seems more vulnerable, less convinced of her strength and joy in the solitude she so zealously courts. Canyon Solitude records these shifts and beautifully limns a journey that tests McCairen's mettle and shows that determination, grit, and the will to spurn conventional rewards offer their own deep satisfactions.

Editorial Review:

Here at last is a book for women who love professional sports that is at once smart and saucy, deep and dishy. It’s not a book for women who want to impress their husbands or boyfriends. It’s not a book that gets all worked up over Title IX or Mia Hamm or the virtues of the WNBA.  And it’s not a book with a pink cover.

In short, the joy and passion of following pro sports is too often eclipsed by an emphasis on factoids and statistics, and here, finally, is the antidote. GameFace: The Kick-Ass Guide for Women Who Love Pro Sports by Erica Boeke and Chris De Benedetti captures the action and drama of pro sports -- both on the field and off -- from scandals to tailgating and from thugs to heroes.

GameFace is also packed with never-seen-before lists and tips including:

*How to get into the pit at a NASCAR race

*Sports Wives & Girlfriends Hall of Fame & Shame

*Best & Worst Performances of The Star Spangled Banner

*Best Ballpark Eats

*Best Sports Movies & TV Shows

*Athletes & Teams That Give Us Hope

GameFace will inspire female fans everywhere to regale stat-spewing guys at water coolers and sports bars with mesmerizing tales of thrilling victories, agonizing defeats, and the magical (and sometimes hilarious) moments that only pro sports can deliver.

Editorial Review:

Women in Sport offers a timely and comprehensive overview of issues that impact girls' and women's emergence into the mainstream of American sports. Tightly edited with contributions from a broad, interdisciplinary group of scholars, this volume examines political, historical, economic, psychological, physiological, and sociological issues significant to women's participation in sports. The contributors bring a diversity of feminist perspectives to their debate on such controversial topics as the ramifications of Title IX, joining the sports establishment, homophobia in sports, exploitation of minorities, and competitiveness versus nurturing. Replete with discussion questions and a glossary of key terms and concepts, this remarkable volume is ideally suited as a text for courses in gender studies and sport and physical education. In addition, it serves as a valuable reference for professionals working with girls' and women's sports programs. "Editor Greta L. Cohen is to be commended on her coordinating all the material in this work. . . . The 31 authors have prepared excellent chapters. . . . The book is arranged in such a way that each chapter stands alone; students could use parts of the book in any sequence. Each chapter is supplemented by key words used in the overview, discussion questions, and references. Excellent material for undergraduate and graduate students, to supplement courses in history and principles, women's studies, and issues involving women's sports." --Choice "Women in Sport provides a strong, comprehensive review of the issues which influence women's participation in American sports. Chapters feature a strong interdisciplinary approach as they analyze the political, economic, psychological and sociological influences which affect both performance and choices." --The Bookwatch "Dr. Cohen has brought together some of the best authors on the various topics presented. I don't believe you can find better known or more knowledgeable professionals to bring together in one text. A text of this sort will no doubt become a 'classic' in our profession." --Dr. Laurie Priest, Physical Education Chairperson and Director of Athletics, Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts "It is often said that attempts to be all things to all people result in something that is nothing to anyone. However, editor Greta L. Cohen has given us a shining exception to that belief. Women in Sport is a history, an analysis, a guide, a resource and a valuable addition to the library of anyone with an interest in enhancing the experiences of women in sport." --The Women's Sports Experience "This textbook for college students on women's sports experiences does a thorough job of covering all aspects of women in sports. The book begins with a fascinating 4-page chronology . . . . The book deals with such diverse issues as: homophobia, eating disorders, minorities and the Olympic games, and media portrayals of female athletes." --The Feminist Majority Report

A League of Their Own meets Friday Night Lights: The American home front in World War II as seen through a unique season in NFL history

During World War II, the National Football League faced a crisis unimaginable today: a shortage of players. By 1943, so many players were in the armed forces that the league was forced to fold one team (the Cleveland Rams) and merge two others: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Thus were the Steagles born.

The Steagles included military draft rejects, aging stars lured out of retirement, and even a couple of active servicemen who managed to get leave for the games. The center was deaf in one ear, the wide receiver was blind in one eye (and partially blind in the other), and the halfback had bleeding ulcers. One player was so old he'd never before played football with a helmet.

Yet, somehow, this motley bunch managed to post a winning record--the first in the history of the Eagles and just the second in the history of the Steelers.

But Last Team Standing isn't just about football. It's also about life in the United States during World War II, a time of fear and hope, of sacrifice and momentous change. It's about rationing, racism, and Rosie the Riveter. It's about draft boards, bond drives, the A-bomb, and movie stars. Above all, it's about the men and women of the Greatest Generation who couldn't fight, but helped win the war in immeasurable ways.

Editorial Review:

For the woman whose significant other spends hours glued to ESPN comes a fun and irreverent guide to understanding (and enjoying) the male-dominated world of spectator sports

From The Smart Girl’s Guide to Sports:
Welcome, ladies. This book will not make you a sports expert. It will not make you put down a great novel to watch football, or stop you from helping your kids with their homework because you have to watch the last five minutes of a basketball game. It will, however, give you a glimpse of why men do these things. And it will allow you to enjoy sports—really, I swear.

The beautiful thing about sports, unlike, say, neurosurgery, is that a little bit of knowledge is not a dangerous thing. If you’re amidst a herd of men and the topic turns to sports, you only need to know a few key points and you’re in. If the discussion turns to home runs, for instance, and you say, "Yes, but there’s never been anything more exciting than when McGwire and Sosa were after Maris’s record," you instantly win a

new kind of respect from the testosterone crowd.

We don’t have the sports gene men have. (We have other, better ones.) Thus, this book aims to give you only the most fundamental, most fun, and most entertaining information—the tools to enjoy sports, or to participate in the game in whichever way you choose.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to Sports covers all the major professional sports: football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, boxing, and even car racing.

Each chapter includes a "Here’s How It Works" section that explains the basics of the game; profiles of each sport’s timeless greats and "contemporary cool" players; and a funny, readable glossary of key terms.

Editorial Review:

In 1973, Marilyn Sayre gave up her job as a computer programmer and became the first woman in twenty years to run a commercial boat through the Grand Canyon. Georgie White had been the first, back in the 1950s, but it took time before other women broke into guiding passengers down the Colorado River. This book profiles eleven of the first full-season Grand Canyon boatwomen, weaving together their various experiences in their own words. Breaking Into the Current is a story of romance between women and a place. Each woman tells a part of every Canyon boatwoman's story: when Marilyn Sayre talks about leaving the Canyon, when Ellen Tibbets speaks of crew camaraderie, or when Martha Clark recalls the thrill of white water, each tells how all were involved in the same romance. All the boatwomen have stories to tell of how they first came to the Canyon and why they stayed. Some speak of how they balanced their passion for being in the Canyon against the frustration of working in a traditionally male-oriented occupation, where today women account for about fifteen percent of the Canyon's commercial river guides. As river guides in love with the Canyon and their work, these women have followed their hearts. "I've done a lot," says Becca Lawton, "but there's been nothing like holding those oars in my hands and putting my boat exactly where I wanted it. Nothing."

Editorial Review:

The extraordinary collection of photographs and rich personal stories that make up Game Face documents the tremendous impact that sports has on the daily lives of millions of girls and women. On playing fields and street corners, in backyards and gyms, the people in this arresting array of pictures are unselfconsciously exploring the physical and emotional pleasures of competition and play. Each image offers an affirming and satisfying answer to the question at the heart of Game Face: What do girls and women look like, freed from traditional feminine constraints, using their bodies in joyful and empowering ways?

When Title IX was passed in 1972, only one out of twenty-seven school-age girls played sports. Now one in three does. Yet their expanding involvement in sports is still largely overlooked by the media, and as a consequence, millions of young female athletes crave not only role models but an authentic and appealing reflection of their own athleticism. As a young sports journalist, Jane Gottesman was all too aware of this imbalance, and saw the need for a book that honors both our top female athletes and the everyday girls and women whose self-image is strengthened through athletic participation. With the goal of showing America what women's sports looks like, she searched through the work of our country's best photographers, from the newest photojournalists to artists such as Annie Leibovitz and Ansel Adams. The result is Game Face, a unique and inspiring selection of color and black-and-white photographs, a text with first-person accounts by athletes, and an illustrated time line of women's athletic milestones.

Published simultaneously with the opening of an important exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution that will tour for five years, Game Face has been endorsed by the Girl Scouts of the USA, who've developed a Game Face patch, the NCAA, and the YWCA of the USA. An inspiring gift for an athlete of any age, this powerful, timely book takes one of art's most studied subjects the female body and celebrates it in a brand-new way.

Editorial Review:

After some 20 years as a highly respected aerobic fitness instructor and health promoter--one who rarely uses the phrase "lose weight"--Kathy Smith is shifting her priorities. "I would never want to choose, but if I could only do one form of training from now on, I'd give up cardio and focus on weight training." A strong statement, indeed! The title of this, her fourth book, suggests Smith's goal is to help exercisers lose weight. But as readers work through the engrossing chapters on physiology, exercise basics, and making the shift from aerobics to weight lifting, Smith says they'll note that weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of the true benefits generated by this straightforward, nonthreatening weight-lifting program. Smith believes in the power of consistent, progressive exercise with free weights and weight-lifting machines to counteract the muscle loss and slower metabolism that naturally come with age and typically cause the pounds to pile on. Her 12-week "mini commitment" eases newcomers into a comprehensive program of weight lifting and sensible eating, and includes weekly checklists for tracking workouts and meals. Large photos accompany clearly written descriptions of more than 60 stretches and exercises, nicely organized by muscle group (chest, back, abdominals, and so on). Just pick a gym or a room at home, and Smith will provide the routine. Advocates of her popular fitness videos (more than two dozen to date) will appreciate Smith's natural warmth, encouragement, and intelligence throughout this motivational book. --Liane Thomas

Editorial Review:

In the annals of sports, no individual rivalry matches the intensity, longevity, and emotional resonance of the one between two extraordinary women: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

Over sixteen years, Evert and Navratilova met on the tennis court a record eighty times—sixty times in finals. At their first match in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, Chris was an eighteen-year-old star and Martina, two years her junior, was an unknown Czech making her first trip to the United States. It would be two years before Martina finally beat Chris, and another year—after Navratilova had dropped twenty pounds and improved her game—before Evert publicly betrayed her first hint of concern. By then, the women were already friends and sometimes doubles partners, and the colorful story that would captivate the world was under way.

The Rivals is the first book to examine the intertwined journey of these legendary champions, based on extensive interviews with each. Taking readers on and off the courts with vivid, never-before-published material, award-winning sportswriter Johnette Howard shows how Evert and Navratilova came of age during the rambunctious golden age of tennis in the 1970s, and how—together—they redefined women’s athletics during a time of volcanic change in sports and society. Their epic careers unfolded against the backdrop of the fight for Title IX, the gay rights movement, the women's movement and the fall of the iron curtain. Howard draws entertaining, intimate, and myth-shattering portraits of Evert and Navratilova, describing the personal migrations each woman made, and showing how enmeshed their lives became.

Navratilova and Evert’s ability to forge and maintain a friendship during sixteen years of often-cutthroat competition has always provoked wonder and admiration. They were a study in contrasts, a collision of politics and style and looks. Chris was the crowd darling while Martina, her greatest foil, was often cast as the villain. Chris was the imperturbable champion who proved toughness and femininity weren’t mutually exclusive; Martina was portrayed as both emotionally fragile and some fearsome Amazon. Chris’s off-court life was presumed to be bedrock solid, the stuff of Main Street America; Martina’s was derided as outrageous and sometimes chaotic, even during her invincible years. Yet, through it all, the two remained friends who lifted each other to heights that each says she couldn’t have reached without the other.

Women’s tennis now is more popular than ever, thanks in large part to the trailblazing of Evert and Navratilova. A rivalry like theirs, filled with so many grace notes, is unique in sports history.

Editorial Review:

The inspiring story of one woman's journey of healing and transformation.

Sara Hall's life seemed perfect: a wealthy husband, a big house in an affluent suburb, three healthy children. But the surface of Hall's life hid a marriage filled with sorrow and pain. One day, at age forty-two, Hall sees a lone figure rowing in the harbor, and that image becomes her holy grail.

In this richly layered memoir, the author tells how her determination to master rowing a single shell gave her the courage to free herself from the dark forces of abuse in her childhood and the failure of her marriage. In lyrical prose, Hall describes the rigors of rowing, the elation of winning, the joy of total engagement in passionate enterprise, and the triumph of breaking free. Ultimately, she declares sovereignty over her life and wins a world championship gold medal. Drawn to the Rhythm is a brave and soulful book, written for all women who seek to find their strength and voice. 16 pages of b/w photographs. Reading group guide included.
