How Lady of Avalon Relates 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As many have said this was not one of the better works in the Avalon series.

However the three novellas, while in themselves do not give you much time to become attached to the characters each has its own purpose within the series.

For instance the fist section follows Caillean's journey to found Avalon after leaving the Forest House, and to create the world that still captivates readers 20 or so years after Mists was originally published.

The second section ties in to the sequel Priestess of Avalon, which encompasses the entirety of is written in the novella about Dierna.

Lastly the third section recounts the early life of Vivane. So although Lady may not be the best out of the series is it is still an essential part of the collection.

Editorial Review:

New York Times bestselling author Marion Zimmer Bradley brings the mesmerizing world of myth, romance and history to life in the spellbinding novel of epic grandeur!

Before the legend of King Arthur and Camelot, there was Avalon, a beautiful island of golden vales and silver mists. A land where the lives of three powerful priestesses shape the destiny of Roman Britian as they fight to regain the magic and traditions of a once gallant past...

Ravens of Avalon 4 out of 5 stars.

I was a little disappointed to discover Marion Zimmer Bradley did not write this book, but Diana L. Paxson continued the Avalon Saga very well. As a former Latin and Roman History Instructor, I enjoyed reading the story of a great leader of Britain with the factual information enriched by fantasy fiction set in the Roman occupation of what came to be called Britain.

This is a wonderful addition to the Avalon series. My mother said it was one of the best she had read so far...and that says loads!

Editorial Review:

Not since The Mists of Avalon has there been such a powerful and mesmerizing portrait of goddess-powered womanhood and women's spirituality. In Priestess of Avalon, the legendary Marion Zimmer Bradley once again reaches back in time to create a magnificent prequel to her undying classic of Camelot.

Priestess of Avalon tells the timeless story of Eilan-known to the Romans as Helena-a British princess raised on the holy isle of Avalon as she grows from maiden to mother to wise woman. It is Helena's destiny-at a crucial turning point in Western history-to bridge the pagan world of the goddess and the new Christian empire founded by her own son, Constantine. When Helena embarks on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land she will find the intrinsic truth that transcends both the old religion and the new.

The legions of fans who cherish The Mists of Avalon will find its promise brought to rich fulfillment in Priestess of Avalon. For those new to the series, undreamed-of enchantment awaits.

neat take on history 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Ancestors of Avalon picks up where "The Fall of Atlantis" leaves off. This is the book that gives more insight to the lives of the ancients in Atlantis, and the actual devestation and destruction of their lands. The story then moves to the Atlantic Ocean, upon the ships of the fleeing Atlanteans (and other Sea Kingdom peoples).

Following different groups of refugees, you find yourself immersed in ancient Cornwall, Glastonbury (Avalon), and Stonehenge (before it was built) from 4,000 years ago. The natives that are encountered are very interesting, and as much as possible the anthropological/archeological evidences as we know them are held in check with the story. The raising of Stonehenge is very enchanting, along with the building of the spiral path around the Tor. This book is a fun read into an ancient and magical past.

This is book #2 in "The Mists of Avalon" series, to be followed with "The Forest House."

Putting Women in their Place-As Heroes of the Fantasy genre 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is Marion Zimmer Bradley's third anthology of sword and sorcery fiction devoted to stories where women are the protagonists. They come in many forms, warriors, thieves, mages, healers, wise-women, adventurers and wanderers. MZB sticks to her guns throughout-these are not romances, nor are they stories where women are the sidekicks, or simply women to be overcome by a more powerful male. Instead, this anthology holds a wide range of stories, and an infinitely wide range of heroines. Since the first Sword and Sorceress anthology, these stories became increasingly popular, so that MZB had received rampant submissions for this third anthology from hopeful writers. Most of her intro delves into her editing methods, and what she expects from a story. Readers get to see a bit of the process behind selection, as well as MZB's sharp and humorous personality that I personally found delightful.

MZB once more serves up a range of voices; from familiar returning favorites, to brand new first sales. Probably one of the most noteworthy new authors, in my opinion, is Mercedes Lackey. "Sword Sworn" is, I believe, Misty's debut as a published author, and is certainly the first introduction to her unforgettable mercenary heroines, Tarma and Kethry who are the protagonists of Lackey's later novels; OATHBOUND and OATHBREAKERS. Lackey has gone on to quite a career since then, but even this first short story showcases her talents as a writer. As to returning favorites, MZB has included an interesting tale of a dragon and a young nature-wizard "Dragon Amber" by Deborah Wheeler (noteworthy, in part because Bradley tends to dislike any sort of `cliché' dragon story), "Valley of Shadow" by Jennifer Roberson, "Journeytime" by Dana Kramer-Rolls, "Marwe's Forest" by Charles Saunders, and "The Mist on the Moor" by Diana L. Paxson.

"Journeytime" by Dana Kramer-Rolls, "The River of Tears" by Anodea Judith, and "Sword Sworn" by Mercedes Lackey are more serious ventures, dealing with the transformation of character and the journey, both physical and spiritual, these characters make. Unlike her first two anthologies, number three has a greater number of serious stories, the balance of humor is not as prevalent, still there are one or two that lighten the mood. "Orpheus" by Mary Frances Zambreno is about an unusual pair of women adventurers sent to retrieve a soul from the underworld, and "Bargains" by Elizabeth Moon where the bargains in question, may be no bargain at all.

Among my favorites is "A Tale From Hendry's Mill" by Melisa Carpenter, an interesting take on the `rape and revenge' theme, and one very likable heroine. "More's the Pity" by L. D. Woeltjen is a haunting tale that works its spell very effectively in a few short pages. As mentioned above, "Sword Sworn" by Mercedes Lackey is her introduction to two female mercenaries, and a powerful story of both sword and sorcery-and vengeance. Perhaps the most intriguing story is Jennifer Roberson's "Valley of the Shadow". It's one you'll just have to read.

All of the stories in this anthology are strongly written and well selected, although there are quite a few longer, more serious pieces than in the last two anthologies. I still consider this collection worth five stars, but could have wished for one or two shorter humorous pieces interspersed in the mix. For any reader who enjoys reading stories about women in fantasy, this is definitely a good place to find them! If you have read this anthology and have enjoyed it, I highly recommend finding the first two anthologies-they're just as well written!

Happy reading! ^_^ --shanshad

Some good early work 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A little about me. . . I have read nearly everything by Diana Paxson, starting with her more recent works (e.g., "Wolf and the Raven," "Dragons on the Rhine," the "Hallowed Isle" series). It wasn't until recently that I could acquire all of the Westria novels and read them.

I disagree with the negative comments by another reviewer. The Westria series was one of Diana Paxson's first novels and, as an early novel, is quite good. It may help to understand how "Mistress of the Jewels" fits into the entire series. While other authors give you a short, brief descent into chaos/evil from which the hero/heroine must emerge, in "Mistress" Ms. Paxson shows you the descent and the contributing factors. It isn't until "Silverhair the Wanderer" (pt. 3 of the Westria series) that you are truly introduced to all of the heroes and heroines and begin to see their struggle to emerge from chaos/evil. As such, "Mistress" is truly a 'prequel,' and it is in later books of the Westria series that Ms. Paxson's character and plot development truly shine.

All in all, the entire series is a good read.

Editorial Review:

The Arthurian saga is one of the most enduring legends of Western civilization. In her sweeping and magnificent multi-volume work The Hallowed Isle, acclaimed author Diana L. Paxson brilliantly reinvents the classic myth from the unique perspectives of four distinct tribal cultures that shaped Britain in the violent days of the sixth century.

Book One: The Book of the Sword

Mighty Rome subjugated the isle of Britain only to abandon it, leaving behind a bloody patchwork of warring tribes. To put an end to this conflict, Artoria Argantel--Lady of the Lake and Druid priestess--has called upon the Spirit of War and Justice to deliver a champion who will unite the broken land. A champion who will come from her own ancient and royal blood. For only one man can wield the sword forged from star-steel by ancient spells. Only one man can free the sword from its prison of stone: Artor, a fosterling of unknown parentage...the promised High King.

Book Two: The Book of the Spear

A Saxon of royal blood, Oesc has fled the drowned, doomed country to which he is heir in order to claim rich lands in Britannia. Though sworn to the spirits of his new home, he truly serves the dark sorcery of an older god--the power of the Spear. But the Spear's magic is opposed by that of the Sword of Rome, the sword wielded by young King Artor and his father Uthir before him. The sword that slew Oesc's own father. Now vengeance burns fiercely in Oesc's heart, a lust for revenge that could destroy a greatness before it fully blooms. Destiny lies in the clashing of magic steel...the hope of all Britannia rests in the hands of the warrior sons.

Introduce your love of myth and legends with this anthology 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

As a pre-service teacher, I am eager to share this anthology with any teacher who would like a less than bible-thick introduction to Arthurian literature for their teenage students. Short stories, that not only simmer with the breath of Avalon and mystery of legends, it is also a painless introduction to great fantasy writers like Marion Zimmer Bradley. I am promoting it for use in SSR (sustained silent reading) in class-rooms and as a fine teaching resource to launch into bigger things like Morte de'Arthur. It's focus on the little people (the extras) suggests the very essence of fables and myths - the fluidity and re-telling of a story to legendary status. While I wouldn't say every story appealed to me - I would say that this must testify to the fact that it includes a tale bewitching enough for a wider audience than I anticipated. Try it! on yerself and on yer teenagers. It's a great platform for engaging in olde worlde literature and classics - creative, sweet and sometimes shocking....loved it...won't sell it..pass it on

A fine re-telling of an old tale 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Diana Paxson has done a great job of re-creating the world of fifth-century Europe. The reader gets a good sense of what that chaotic era was like. This is one of the strongest aspects of the book. (As a student of history, I was pleased with the notes and bibliography that Paxson provides at the end.) The huge cast of characters is somewhat bewildering. It is difficult, at first, to keep track of them all, though well worth the effort. Many of the supernatural characters from the original, ancient tales are made into humans in this rendition, but this only makes them more interesting. For example, Brunahild, who is an immortal demigoddess in the original, here becomes a Hun princess who joins up with the Walkyriun, an order of priestesses. Likewise, Ragan, the dwarf from the old saga, is here made into a man of the Earthfolk, a race that is far older than the Germanic tribes, and even older than the Celts. The story follows the lives of Brunahild and Sigfrid as they go through childhood, grow into their respective powers, and, finally, meet. While Brunahild is learning the ways of the Walkyriun, Sigfrid is being fostered by Ragan out in the woods, where he learns to utilize the shapeshifting powers inherited from his late father. Both Brunahild and Sigfrid are very likable characters, and it is easy to sympathize with them. Theirs is a grand story and Paxson does a fine job of telling it.

Editorial Review:

Born to rival kings in fifth-century Rhineland, Sigfrid and Brunahild each learn the ancient arts of their heritage, until their powers surpass those of their teachers, and they are united in perfect love and glory. Reprint.
