Editorial Review:

“THAT’S NO MOON.”
–Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Death Star’s name says it all, with bone-chilling accuracy. It is a virtual world unto itself–equipped with uncanny power for a singularly brutal purpose: to obliterate entire planets in the blink of an eye. Its annihilation of the planet Alderaan, at the merciless command of Grand Moff Tarkin, lives in infamy. And its own ultimate destruction, at the hands of Luke Skywalker, is the stuff of legend. But what is the whole story, and who are the players, behind the creation of this world-killing satellite of doom?

The near extermination of the Jedi order cleared the way for Palpatine–power-hungry Senator and Sith Lord–to seize control of the Republic, declare himself Emperor, and usher in a fearsome, totalitarian regime. But even with the dreaded Darth Vader enforcing Palpatine’s sinister will, the threat of rebellion still looms. And the Emperor knows that only abject fear–and the ability to punish dissent with devastating consequences–can ensure his unchallenged control of the galaxy. Enter ambitious and ruthless government official Wilhuff Tarkin, architect of the Emperor’s terrifying dream come true.

From inception to completion, construction of the unprecedented Death Star is awash in the intrigues, hidden agendas, unexpected revelations, and daring gambits of those involved on every level. The brightest minds and boldest egos, the most ambitious and corrupt, the desperate and the devious, all have a stake in the Death Star–and its potential to control the fate of the galaxy.

Soldiers and slaves, loyalists and Rebels, spies and avengers, the innocent and the evil–all their paths and fates will cross and intertwine as the Death Star moves from its maiden voyage to its final showdown. And a shadowy chapter of Star Wars history is stunningly illuminated in a thrilling, unforgettable adventure.

A title worthy of the Star Wars name 4 out of 5 stars.

Shadows of the Empire is a work of genius, plain and simple. Unknown to many, this novel was the elaborate plan of Lucasfilm's marketing department. Lucas had originally intended to release his Special Edition of the original Star Wars Trilogy in theaters in 1996, but when his scheduling fell behind, all of his plans for that year had to be altered. So deciding that this Special Edition would be released in 1997, and also a way to celebrate the original film's 20th anniversary, Lucas' team had to come up with some way to fill in the gap for fans during the year preceding the theatrical release. Shadows of the Empire was not just a novel, but part of an in-genius campaign that was coined "everything but the movie." It included the novel, toys, trading cards, video games, models, and all kinds of merchandise, including an original "film" score. (This soundtrack is also a great addition for any fan of Star Wars scores, by the way.) The Star Wars marketing camp even made a trailer for the novel that aired on television. Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, it would answer many fan's questions about how everything fell into place for the final installment of the saga.

As a novel it had a great plot and was well written. With familiar characters and a new exciting villain who was a great foil to Darth Vader (Prince Xizor), this story was exciting and highly entertaining. Two key scenes that stand out are Vader trying to heal himself with the Dark Side of the Force (which gives readers a great sense of his character and his whole obsession with Luke and the Force), and the seduction of Princess Leia by Prince Xizor. This is a fantastic read and the only Expanded Universe book that has been recognized by George Lucas himself as being the only novel to be considered official canon.

Highly recommended and while you're at it you might as well get the soundtrack if you can get your hands on it. This only compliments the novel and is a fantastic piece of musical scoring in and of itself.

Editorial Review:

Shadows of the Empire illuminates the shadowy outlines of a criminal conspiracy that exists in the background of the events in the movies, ruled by a character new to us. Prince Xizor is a mastermind of evil who dares to oppose one of the best-known fictional villains of all time: Darth Vader. The story involves all the featured Star Wars movie characters, plus Emperor Palpatine and, of course, Lord Vader himself.

Medical adventures in the Clone Wars 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Much of the Star Wars Expanded Universe is heavily focused on the main characters as presented in the films. However, there are some definite exceptions to this rule, and what I find particularly interesting is how little of the Clone Wars literature follows that trend. This is the fifth book in chronological order telling the story of the war, and so far one has focused on Obi-Wan, one on Mace Windu, and three have not featured main film characters in any meaningful way. Anakin has had essentially a handful of paragraphs, while Padme has been non-existent.

Medstar I: Battle Surgeons is the tale of a medical unit desperately fighting to keep clone troopers alive on a hostile world. The story could be summarized as M.A.S.H. blended with Star Wars. Like in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, Michael Reaves (with Steve Perry this time) shows a strong capability for writing likable characters and snappy dialogue. The book flows well and is a quick read. I was excited to see the return of I-Five, the protocol-droid-with-an-attitude from Shadow Hunter. His acerbic attitude fits perfectly with the survival-through-sarcasm approach of the Rimsoo (a medical unit) the book follows.

I-Five also is a tool for exploring the nature of droids and their standing in the order of the universe. Jos Vondar, the lead surgeon in this particular camp, has narrowed his worldview to exclude many possibilities. This keeps him able to make it through the daily horror of his wartime surgery post. However, this attitude prevents him from dating outside his culture, from keeping an open mind to the possibilities inherent in a developed artificial intelligence, and from gaining a deeper understanding of the hundreds of clone troopers passing by his operating table. I-Five's self-exploration, important to him after the climactic events of Shadow Hunter, pushes Jos to begin his own journey within.

Also, the encounters Jos has with a clone trooper, CT-914, stir within him a dawning awareness that these soldiers are not just simple mindless vat-grown automatons; they are fully functioning human beings, only limited by the environment they were raised in and the accelerated aging forced into their genes. This running theme in the EU has totally changed how I view the troops of the Star Wars universe, adding considerably more interest to their progression from servants of the Republic and the Jedi to enforcers of the Empire. In the two Republic Commando books, The Cestus Deception, and Battle Surgeons, this theme has gotten some serious play.

I was struck by the Jedi Master/Padawan pair of Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee the very first time I saw them together in Attack of the Clones publicity photos, and it's cool to get Barriss as a main character for a second time (The Approaching Storm being the first). Keeping a Jedi in the character mix helps to firmly root this book in the Star Wars universe. The rest of the cast is a snappy group as well: Den Dhur the Sullustan reporter adds a non-combatant viewpoint to the war and the shadowy intrigues of several other characters look to be setting up a big payoff in Medstar II: Jedi Healer.

I wasn't hooked yet by the spy segment of this story: Column/Lens is written so vaguely as to be more frustrating than teasing. Generally my favorite stories focus very closely on following what the main characters know, and when knowledge is introduced that we as readers know but the heroes don't, I like to have some explanation. Otherwise I generally prefer to see these elements only come to light when the main characters discover them.

Overall, Medstar I: Battle Surgeons is an engaging and breezy tale, with strong characterization and solid if not completely gripping plotlines. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the duology.

Editorial Review:

While the Clone Wars wreak havoc throughout the galaxy, the situation on the far world of Drongar is desperate, as Republic forces engage in a fierce fight with the Separatists. . . .

The threatened enemy offensive begins as the Separatists employ legions of droids into their attack. Even with reinforcements, the flesh and blood of the Republic forces are just no match for battle droids’ durasteel. Nowhere is this point more painfully clear than in the steaming Jasserak jungle, where the doctors and nurses of a small med unit face an impossible situation. As the dead and wounded start to pile up, surgeons Jos Vandar and Kornell “Uli” Divini know that time is running out.

Even the Jedi abilities of Padawan Barriss Offee have been stretched to the limit. Ahead lies a test for Barriss that could very well lead to her death–and that of countless others. For the conflict is growing–and for this obscure mobile med unit, there’s only one resolution. Shocking, bold, unprecedented, it’s the only option Jos and his colleagues really have. The unthinkable has become the inevitable. Whether it kills them or not remains to be seen.

Turnabaout and get your money Back! 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Rating 2.5 is what we have given this newest novel since we've been a big fan of Steve Perry's writing for a long time since his once highly-acclaimed Matador series days.

But for a duo franchise that Predator and Aliens needs, unfortunately Steve and his daughter produced twin stinkers here. (What happened to this once great writer?)

Sure it is in an exotic setting of Alaska. Sure the storyline is quite simple, and does have some inventive and different takes for the Predator Hunt. Having an old sniper go against a small group of Predators was cool.

But having the Predators barely in it at all was a huge mistake. Kodiak bears play a more major role in this book than what the bloody book title suggests its Supposed to be! Predators! Weak character development here.

I guess John Shirley is the only writer here to step up and write solid outings in both franchises. The next Predator novel will have a new addition to the writers of the Predator franchise.

Lets hope he does a more solid and imaginative job that this franchise desperately needs. Hollywood is destroying both franchises, and now it seems the small team of writers besides Shirley are doing the same.

I'm sorry Mr. Perry, but you lost your edge here.

Editorial Review:

Deep in the Alaskan forest, ranger Sloan comes across the torn and bloody carcasses of Grizzly bears. Searching a human cause for the massacres, he discovers a team of poachers hunkered within the Alaska wilderness, waiting for the chance to score a big kill. He also finds evidence of the most fearsome killers in the universe: the Predators.

Life Is Full Of Surprises 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was fully prepared to dislike this book. To begin with, it was a gift, not something I would have chosen. I'm not a big Tom Clancy fan. I don't have anything against him, I just haven't read any of his books. The thing is, I still haven't read any of Clancy's books. Although POINT OF IMPACT has Clancy's name all over it, it was actually written by Steve Perry, someone I had never heard of.

Then there was the prologue, which contains some very hokey and contrived dialogue. By the time I got through the first few pages my eyes were rolling. Given the larger-than-life action and comic book characterization typical of this type of book, combined with what I had seen so far, I figured I was in for a real stinker.

But, to my surprise, POINT OF IMPACT turned out to be pretty good. Not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but entertaining and quite readable. The prologue was just a setup. To be sure, you still get the over-the-top plot, but that goes with the genre. Beyond that, there actually was some character development. Not so much for the Net Force "good guys" (I assume they're already familiar from previous books in the series) as for the "bad guy" drug maker and his sidekick. These two become somewhat familiar and interesting as the story progresses.

I enjoyed POINT OF IMPACT and I hadn't expected to. It wasn't clever or memorable in any particular way. There isn't any real depth. Still, it didn't bore me and the writing was competent. For a light read, you could do a lot worse. Fans of this genre won't be disappointed.

why did steve perry write this? 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I had thought, in the beginning, that CyberNation would be pretty good because Tom Clancy wrote a ton of really good books and many great video games are created based on his stories. However, as I read along, there was hardly anything to enjoy. Obviously, I had not read any of the other reviews, so I had no idea what trap I was falling into. The storyline of this book is devoid meaning and completely boring, the complete opposite of what Tom Clancy would normally write.
The "storyline" about Gridley, Howard, Michaels, Santos, Chance, and Keller is completely disjointed. One of the few reasons why this story is connected is that they are fighting against each other in the internet world, and using the VR, or "Virtual Reality", to track things down or to mess things up. In fact, the whole story is covered up with sex, crime, and violence that there is hardly any connection shown. Of course, if I had not been able to follow the storyline, I would not be able to write this, but it was still quite confusing.
So I ask, again, why did Steve Perry write this? He has no sense of what Mr Clancy writes, nor of his style, elegance, and flair. One cannot imitate a type of writing without being the type of person, obviously, so why did Mr Perry try to do so? Mr Clancy truly should write more of his own books, even if he thinks he is too important and too proud to do the writing. Mr Clancy and Mr Perry must have decided to play a prank on loyal fans of Mr Clancy (not that I am one) because this has disappointed many enthusiastic readers. Of course, these questions I am not really able to answer, but I would not be surprised if Mr Clancy's name was written in huge, bold letters on the book for the profit.

Good book 4 out of 5 stars.

Minimum Maturity Level - Teen
Extreme violence and gore. Mild language.

Previous Reading Required - None
Seems to be the start of an epic series.

Reading Level - Average
Easy to keep up with.

Rate of Development - Average
Takes a bit to get background on the characters but not too long.

The Story - Good
Aliens found. A group of marines sent to destroy them. At the same time, a queen is brought to earth for study.

My Suggestion - Recommended
I liked this one. There is not much of a plot but its good action. It was a good story save for a few things. The ending was one of those preparing for a sequel endings so there was really no real climax to be found. The title of the book gave me the idea that it starts off as the earth is overrun but it seems like it only just tells the story of how it got overrun with a side quest being told with Wilks and Billie. I would recommend this but only if you plan on reading the sequels after.

Editorial Review:

Thrown together during the last night of an alien invasion, Wilks, a space marine with a compassionate heart, and Bille, a child and the only survivor of a far-flung colony outpost, must rely on each other to survive.

Another Prequel, Another Solid Hit 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Some might be questioning the limits of the author's ability to write novels beyond that of "Man Who Nevver Missed" universe what with his numerous "post" Confed and now even more "pre" Matador offerings he seems destined to eventually flesh out the timelines and tangents of action back to our present day.
I for one hope he does so, as every single selection, from Black Steel to The Albino Knife to even the obscure Omega Cage(an exciting Prison Break piece with 2 supporting chacaters from the Matador series= Dain Maro a black market operateer who actualy meets Khadaji only once and Juete, the sexy albino SkinSlave who was Khadaji's first love) all of them abound with sleek futuristic coolness, coupled with the fierce savagery of conflict, martial and political.
I eagerly await Mr. Perry's next foray into the past or future of that universe. Because so far every story has been well worth it.
