Finding Science Fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Pohl has the pleasurable job of being a professional writer who gets to investigate science and what scientists are working on. He discovered the joys of doing this as a tourist after an impromptu visit to the computation lab at MIT after giving a speech there. Since then, he has circled the globe in all directions to enjoy nature and scientists at work in many different dimensions. This book is a guide to show you where and how to enjoy the fun as well!

The book is divided into many different sections, by interest area. These include the U.S. national laboratories that you can visit (like Fermilab, Brookhaven National, Argonne, and Sandia), using a backyard telescope to look at the heavens, visiting various telescopes, space travel sites (from Cape Canaveral to Star City in Russia), volcanoes and earthquake locales (especially California, Italy, Iceland, Hawaii, and east Africa), water phenomena (China, Chicago, Niagara Falls, and the Mississippi River), great caves and tunnels (Lescaux in France, Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, Carlsbad Caverns, and subways), fossil and archeology sites (La Brea tar pits, Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, Machu Picchu), meetings where scientists gather to share knowledge (like sessions of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, various museums in the U.S., and the New York Academy of the Sciences), and opportunities for distance learning (by mail, publications, periodicals, television, and e-mail).

One of the great strengths of this book is a geographical index of all of the sites and sources mentioned in the book. The text also contains information about how to access the scientific community and equipment in many cases. For the most part, not much special effort is required other than getting yourself there.

For me, this book is great because I travel a lot. I can use the index to help pick places to visit when I have a hole in my schedule during a trip. For years I have done this with art museums and other cultural sites, but not as often with scientific locations. I look forward to rebalancing that.

I only saw two flaws in the book. First, Mr. Pohl omitted a major way that thousands have enjoyed science over the years, an Earth Watch expedition. This is a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts that helps volunteers find experiments to fund and work on during vacations. One of my sons and I have done this, and found it very rewarding. In my case, I worked on the ways that whales communicate while riding in a Zodiac off the coast of the big island of Hawaii. While there, I had a chance to visit the volcanoes, so I enjoyed two types of science in one trip. It never occurred to me to try to visit the observatories there as well. Next time!

Second, the book does not present many ideas for biological field research visits. Birding is especially good in Central America and Kenya. Whale watching is outstanding in Hawaii, Baja California, Alaska, Massachusetts, and in the Galapagos . . . depending on the time of the year. Perhaps if there is another edition, these kinds of ideas will be added.

If you think you like science or you have family members who do, this book will bring you many hours of pleasure by guiding you into many of the most interesting sites that are easily accessible. I have already visited many of these locations, and can certainly agree that each one was well worth the trip.

After you have read the book, I suggest that you pick themes of things you would like to learn more about. I had the chance to spend time at the Amazon exhibit at the Smithsonian two years ago, and the scientists there were very good at describing all of the research needs we have for the rain forest. Since then, I have learned a lot more in that area. That has turned out to be very intellectually rewarding for me.

Once you find an area that appeals to you, learn about it in as much depth as you enjoy. That will prove more satisfying than just getting a smattering of a lot of areas. Perhaps you can find ways to get your employer involved in supporting the scientific work that needs to be done. Wouldn't that be great?

Have all the science fun you want!

Editorial Review:

Join SF master Frederik Pohl on a non-fictional journey from the ends of the earth to the edges of the universe. Chasing Science describes Pohl's love affair with science. From museums and national laboratories to the heart of a volcano, Pohl lays out a path for any curious mind to follow. Containing new material not in the hardcover edition, this book is perfect for visitors to hands-on science museums.

Hard core sci-fi read 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

A cute, not-very-long novel about a journey to Alpha Centauri by 8 of Earth's best and brightest. Catch: the President has agreed to use them as guinea pigs for a genius-making experiment. They are sent to visit a planet that doesn't exist, knowing they can't return and will all die in space. But, on the journey, they will be forced to become super geniuses, and perhaps solve Earth's problems as a side-product! Silly, but somehow, Pohl pulls it off convincingly. Pohl's English is sometimes quaint (e.g., 'Januarys'), but his obvious attempt to study hard science and put it in his sci-fi in a popular form is commendable. As a work of literature ... forget it; cut-out characters, made to serve the sci-fi.

Editorial Review:

THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST
The crew of the Constitution--scientists cum astronauts--had been carefully screened for extremely high intelligence and superb physical qualities. They were to be the first explorers sent to another stellar system. There they would explore the planet Alpha-Aleph and then return. They were the toast of the world press--true heroes, for they were to go where no man had gone before.
Or so they thought.
Dr. Dieter von Knefhausen knew otherwise--for there was no planet, no place to go...and no place from which to return. Knefhuasen had planned it that way. Of course, Knefhausen realized his plan wasn't exactly ethical. But then, he knew the ends often justify the means.
And Knefhausen's plan worked better then even he had ever hoped!

THE COMPANY ruled the world. The Company was a powerful, efficient, and monstrous organization that "scientifically" regulated everything in life: war, epidemics, one-a-day food pills, and test-tube sex, all through the use of its patented, terrifying human deep-freeze vault. Excellent work by a master. 5 out of 5 stars.

Although it's not as well known as some of his other work this is Pohl at his best! Take the worst trends of society right now and that's where this book starts. This is the sequel to Space Merchants and in some ways it's a redrafting of that story. Excellent.

One of the best books in my collection !!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Really brilliant work. Very captivating , ease to read book. It combines all the best in sci-fi.

Hilarious look at future Earth gone advertising-crazy 5 out of 5 stars.

THE MERCHANTS' WAR (1984) is the hilarious sequal to the classic THE SPACE MERCHANTS (1952). While THE SPACE MERCHANTS is the better known of these two books, THE MERCHANTS' WAR stands up better to the passing of years, as most of the bold predictions in THE SPACE MERCHANTS don't hold up well over time.

The story takes up about 30 years after where THE SPACE MERCHANTS left off, with the "Conservationists" having gotten a foothold on colonizing Venus, and with Earth even more over-populated (40Bln people), and more over-commercialized.

Well, what really impressed me about THE MERCHANTS' WAR was the situations that the befuddled main character Tennison Tarb gets himself into... at first, I thought that "Tenny" was just another unlikeable main character - for example, when he and his girlfriend are out exploring the old Russina Venera landing site on Venus, "Tenny" gets bored, and lets air out of his oxygen tanks, so that the two must head back inside... but later, the situations that continue to happen to Tenny start to get you laughing at him... Tenny reminds me of this Program Manager at my work, and I could imagine these things happening to him, and I just started to laugh at loud, and on a number of occasions.

One of the things that happens to Tenny, is that he quickly becomes driven to buy and be addicted to "Mokie-Coke"... I don't want to spoil it for anybody - so I'll just tell you, you've got the find and read this book (I had to get it at a remote branch of the San Diego Library system).

An undersea SF juvenile 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The first of a trilogy (the other books are Undersea Quest and Undersea City) of SF "juveniles", is in the fine tradition of Heinlein's early works for younger readers that seem to have set the tone for this type of science-fiction novel. Written in the mid-50s, the books' setting was probably inspired by the voyage of the nuclear-powered US submarine "Nautilus". It's a world in which the oceans are dotted with large underwater domed cities and undersea vessels ply the traderoutes between them or engage in harvesting and mining the vast wealth of the sea.

Our young hero is James Eden a cadet at the Sub-sea Academy, the service school for the undersea fleet. The Edens are a family famous in the realm of undersea exploration, since his uncle, Stewart invented "edenite", the material that allows ships and structures to withstand gigantic underwater pressures. The Edens have their rivals, once of which figures prominently in this book.

In a spare 150 pages, James has to outwit his enemies, solve the mystery of his uncle's disappearance, and try to keep himself from being tossed out the academy. It's pure and simple fun, an engagingly written (I sense more of Pohl at work than Williamson) adventure for young adults or older readers who want to capture a bit of that nostaglia that comes from the type of books they read when they were young.

Dated 3 out of 5 stars.

This was a very short book. I appreciate the brevity of the writers of yore, nonetheless I felt it could have done with some fleshing out - especially at the end. Perhaps, reading it from today's perspective, I felt some of the premises to be prepostorous. It was, however, solidly written and strongly plotted.

One other minor quibble, I felt like I could tell when the author's shifted from one to the other.

story descends into jibberish after a good start... 2 out of 5 stars.

'Wolfbane' is a mess of a story, which is extremely disappointing since the authors (Kornbluth and Pohl) have produced one of best science fiction novels ever - 'The Space Merchants'. 'Wolfbane' fails from so many perspectives: completely implausible story, very inconsistent (and often horrible) writing, and characterizations which are weak. I am being generous by judging this book as two stars.

As for the story, we have our beloved planet in turmoil two hundred years after some alien influence kills off the sun and replaces it with a "mini-sun" which burns out ever five years. Most of mankind has died off. All the remaining folks are weak, reticent drones ... with the exception of a few free individuals called wolves. This tenuous co-existence falls apart when the alien influence flexes its muscle, and we have wolves to the rescue! .... yes, the book is THAT bad. Yet the first third of the book does lay out this strange world fairly nicely. Too bad it spirals out of control very fast.

Bottom line: pretty awful. Best avoided.

Editorial Review:

The Earth has been ripped from the Sun by a runaway planet, whose inhabitants have their own plans for Earth's resources. Humankind is dying out, but there are those who defy convention and refuse to give in. Feared by ordinary citizens, these Wolves are preparing to fight back against the aliens.
