Aliens Attack! - well sort of..... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This novel was more fun than I anticipated. Aliens land in New York and the UN first contact team takes over the world to deal with them. This is almost 2 books. The first half deals with the first aliens who land on earth and the second half what earth does in retaliaton to what they find out about people-out-there.

This book sends up tonnes of standard SF stories and is fully tounge-in-cheek. It has a cast of eccentric characters and aliens who really aren't any better or worse than humanity itself.

For a fun satire on the whole SF genre this book is a good read (as long as you aren't expecting anything too sophisticated..)

Editorial Review:

In the year 1881, the moon suddenly begins to turn around and reveal its long-hidden darker side to the startled world. While most of Humanity finds the event fascinating, two British explorers know the horrible truth. The rotating moon is the legendary sign that foreshadows the return of a prehistoric demon, the monstrous destroyer of Atlantis, an unkillable colossus known only as the deadly, dreaded Squid God. Racing around the world, and against the clock, Prof. Einstein and Lord Carstairs battle the fanatical legions of Squid God worshippers in a valiant effort to stop the ghastly rebirthing ceremony and keep the demonic mollusk locked in the stygian depths of its unearthly lair. Authors Nick Pollotta & James Clay have lovingly crafted a splendid Fantasy/Adventure, heavily laced with their classic off-the-wall humor, and sprinkled with a light dusting of parody toward the legendary works of H.P. Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and just about everything else from the golden glory days of Victorian England.

"'That Darn Squid God" rewrites literary history, remodels London worse than the Blitz, and convinces that it is wise never to deny the supremacy of British womanhood! What more can you ask?" ANALOG SF MAGAZINE

"Nick Pollotta is the funniest man in SF!" GENE WOLFE, two-time Nebula Award winner

"Funny, compelling and an absolute pleasure to read. The finest comedy/fantasy I have read this year!" ETERNAL NIGHT SF MAGAZINE

"Delightfully entertaining!" Robin Wood

"It's not often a book of this nature comes along and you do not want to miss it. Pollotta and Clay are trying to corner humorous fantasy and this tale gives them a firm foundation." BARYON SF MAGAZINE

"Set in Victorian England in the year 1881, That Darn Squid God is an hilarious parody of the otherworldly mythos of H. P. Lovecraft, strewn with delightful trappings of mystery and magic. Tongue-and-cheek humor with a fresh, and fast-paced, narrative style set apart That Darn Squid God as a fantastically funny end-of-the-world ride." MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

".and those who hunt the night alone,
With sword and gun, with cross and bone,
Will sneer at Death, and refuse to kneel,
When graveyard chimes being to peal."

Painfully pun abound 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"Never heard of Nick Pollotta? Join the club. Specializing in SF, mystery and humor - and with sixty published titles under his belt, Nick Pollotta has been plugging away just under the mainstream radar for the last fifteen years, earning a living as a writer and having fun doing it.
Tequila Mockingbird is his first collection of humorous (and often painfully punny) short stories. Pollotta's style is a sort of Monty-Python-meets-Raymond-Chandler pastiche. He writes with teenage enthusiasm - there's definitely no tortured, angst-filled artiste behind the gleeful storytelling. This guy obviously loves what he does!
The collection contains eleven stories, all of them bridged with an increasingly preposterous (but informative) "radio interview" with the author.
Tequila Mockingbird is a pie in the face of all the self-important genre fiction that takes itself too seriously. This collection is a delight, playfully lampooning everything we've come to love - and hate - about genre fiction. Tequila Mockingbird probably won't win any awards - but it will give you a few belly laughs!

Editorial Review:

THEY WANTED TO TERRAFORM . . . THE EARTH? Science Fiction and Mystery fans alike will cheer over this brand-new collection of insanely funny short stories. THE INCREDIBLY CIVIL WAR Violence was forbidden, so how could they hold a war? A DISTANT MOON Camelot was doomed to fall, until King Arthur asked Merlin for a very special favor . . . MILLENIUM KNIGHTS Ever wonder why rappers wear huge silver crosses, and carry so many guns? The answer is simple: fangbangers. Nick Pollotta (author of the Bureau 13 novels, Illegal Aliens, That Darn Squid God, etc.) has cruelly unleashed upon the helpless world eleven short stories of his patented madness in this hilarious new collection. From aliens being paid to breathe, to a Spenser-for-Hire satire, each is uniquely written in his off-the-wall style of humor, with a guaranteed twist ending. Included is the infamous Sherlock Holmes cult-classic, "The Really Final Solution."

It's out there 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Taken entirely on its own merits this witty adventure novel deserves an extra star, but good as it is I cannot really say that it stacks up against the best works in print. As an example of gaming fiction, however, it could probably be a five star book. Richard Tucholka's schizophrenic role-playing game of modern horror, government agencies and high explosives is an uneven mix of childish humour, satire, action and scares; and to his great credit Nick Pollotta somehow managed to match the mood of the game perfectly and create an enjoyable romp in the process. The plot is linear, the characters cardboard and the laughs sporadic, but the whole is pulled off with such panache that it is impossible to avoid being swept along. Gamers love this book, perhaps because it reads exactly like a gaming session, but if you are coming to the world of Bureau 13 from more traditional horror and conspiracy fare then you may find that you're biting into a meringue: It's awfully sweet and fun, but lacking in substance and ultimately a wee bit less than you might have hoped for. But... if you see a copy at a fair price then you could certainly do worse.

A darn good Sci-Fi book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book rules! The choose-a-path story styling is a little obnoxious, but the setting, characters, movement, humor, it's all great! Makes me wish Pollotta did more Gamma World novels.

Beyond Funny 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have a vast library of books, including great classics...but it is THIS book that gets the most reading time. Its truly funny each and every time that I read it. The characters are well fleshed out and unique, the B13 world was masterfully used and the book is just a fantastic read, over and over. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Bureau 13 is the ultra-covert branch of the FBI assigned to handle supernatural criminals.

When America is hit by the magical-equivalent of an H-bomb, every telepath in the nation drops dead and suddenly the Bureau is embroiled in a fierce war for survival. Ed Alvarez and his team of Green Berets and wizards hold nothing back as they struggle to save humanity from The Scion, an evil organization of powerful magic-users dedicated to nothing less than the complete destruction of the world. Hoo boy. Outgunned and outnumbered, the Bureau is forced to summon help from every other supernatural agency in the world and risk open warfare to stop America from becoming the other white meat...

Tunafish forever! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Big guns and big magic. Ruthless, bizarre villains who do NOT tell the hero their secret plans, and who will happily shoot him in the back. Sexy telepaths, ninjas, characters die, and lots of laughs. This book is as funny as it is exciting.
Plus, the main character is Latino. Nearly every book I read has just another white guy saving the world. Maybe with a black sidekick, or a Latino gal pal, but they're just along to get kidnapped (so the hero can rescue them), or carry the extra ammo. But not in THIS book. Ed Alvarez kick's supernatural butt all the way through, and leads his team to victory because he's smart AND the toughest SOB on the planet. All hail Team Tunafish!
Why hasn't this great book been made into a movie yet?
