Bester's Best 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have read this book repeatedly since the early 70's when I first learned of the novel. I have also read everything Bester has written in the scifi category. I have lost so many editions of this book (including a first edtion) loaning it to friends for their enrichment only to never have it returned. This book has served me as inspiration of human endeavor and spirit. I have studied psychology and am employed as a Director of Social Services with a treatment program. This book entails many Jungian principles plus confrontation of the bright and dark aspects of our personalities. It is easily read re: length, but do not disservice yourself with a quick read. This book will stir your soul related to intropection and self-assessment. Buy it, borrow it, steal it out of a library if you have to.

Most are Awesome. 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book 3 years ago, and every now and then I still go back to read it again. Some of the stories in here I could read forever, and apparently one author, Joanne Bertin, just came out with her first novel, based on the world in this book. Her story, "Dragonlord's Justice," is my favorite in this book, and can't wait to read her novel.

Editorial Review:

In The Ultimate Dragon, some of the world's best-known fantasy authors explore the legends and lore of the fire-breathing creatures that have transcended space and time. From S.P. Somtow's dramatic tale of an ancient dragon owned by a modern family in Thailand to Tanith Lee's portrait of a dying dragon, this classic collection illuminates the captivating allure of fantasy's best-loved creature.

a decent but flawed book 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Ultimate Dinosaur is an ambitious book, one that seeks to alternate sections on the latest theories on the origin, lives, and deaths of dinosaurs as well as pterosaurs and prehistoric marine reptiles, all written by such noted experts as George Olshevsky, Sankar Chatterjee, and others, with dinosaur-themed science fiction short stories by such authors as Charles Sheffield, Gregory Benford, and Harry Turtledove. A great concept.

Unfortunately it was rather unevenly carried out. The non-fiction sections are quite good, though a few are relatively dry to read. I did learn a few things reading these sections, and alone they just about make the book worthwhile. There were some interesting discussions over the relationship of prosauropods and sauropods for instance, and there was a great article on migrating dinosaurs.

However the short stories vary alot in style and quality, some quite good, other more moderately decent, and a few frankly terrible and hard to get through. The short stories and non-fictions are paired together, and it looks like they found it difficult to find a short story to put with some of the non-fiction sections.

Though this may only apply to the hard-cover edition which I have, I feel I must point out the book was either poorly edited, which I find suprising, or poorly published. The book was replete with words that were run together, misplaced punctuation, odd gaps in sentences, and even misspelled words. They were so common at times that it was jarring and irritating. While many books have one or two such errors, there were many of them in this work. Hopefully the paperback version cleared this up.

Having said that though this was still not a bad book and a worthwhile one to get, though frankly I would not place at the top of the list of books to fill your dinosaur needs. Still, wouldn't be bad to have either.

Editorial Review:

A collection of articles--including one by a leading paleontologist--speculating on the world of the dinosaurs includes contributions by Ray Bradbury, Robert Silverberg, Gregory Benford, Michael Bishop, and many others.

Childhood Classic 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read this novel when I was in grade school. It stuck with me into adulthood and I decided to give it a reread to see if it was as good as I remembered. I am pleased to say that it holds up well. A generic title aside, this is a wonderful read. It is a tragedy and a misunderstanding that brings two nations to war, set against the backdrop of the twilight of the age of Dragons. This is the perfect book to get a young person into fantasy.

One of the few books I've read 3 times... 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked this book up from my school library when I was a teenager and loved it. I then went on a search for this book so I could own it. The search took me over 2 years of sporadic looking, but I finally found it. Twenty-five years later I still have that copy and it is one I will keep and eventually share w/ my 3 sons.

The characterizations are crisp and multi-faceted. No one-dimensional ones like in The Wheel of Time series. The heroics are not grand gestures (but can be heartwrenchingly beautiful) and the heroes would not call themselves such. The characters are simply doing what is necessary to suceed.

The plot is reminiscent (to me, at least) of The Hobbit. It may seem a bit standard, but has some wonderful elegant moments. I loved Ansel's bravery and the dragons are marvellous. Why is this book not a movie?!

If you are a fan of Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey's Pern series or the works of Jack Vance, then this book is for you. Give it a try if you want to read fantasy as it is meant to be written.

Editorial Review:

Somewhere beyond the northern mists lies a land where dreams live and dragons are real. This is the tale of the twilight of the dragons, of two nations plunged into war by a tragic misunderstanding, of a shy dreamer's incredible voyage of peace to a long-forgotten land where nightmares are born. A magnificient creation, a sweeping epic of high fantasy set in a richly imagined world, vividly brought to life with over eighty pages of stunning illustrations by Joseph Zucker.

Editorial Review:

A FANTASTIC NEW VIEW OF A LOST ERA Here are dinosaurs as you've never seen them before in a dramatically expanded new edition of the book that started the renaissance in dinosaur books. Here are dinosaurs that are swift, stunning, scary and stupendous, presented in a lavish format. Using the latest paleontological research, "The New Dinosaurs "presents a scientifically accurate look at the way dinosaurs lived: how they moved, ate, dueled, drank and mated. From ten-ton brontosaurus to thirty-foot hadrosaurus, here is a story more fantastic than fantasy itself! "The Dinosaurs -- A Fantastic New View of a Lost Era," by William Stout, with narration by the late William Service, is considered to be a classic in illustrated naturalist books. Featured in "Life" magazine, it helped spark the worldwide interest in dinosaurs that culminated in Jurrasic Park. William Stout's prehistoric life murals are on permanent display at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and at Walt Disney's Animal Kingdom. William Service was the author of "Owl," which "Time" magazine called, "one of the most elegant and perceptive pieces of natural writing." Edited by Byron Preiss.

lovely treatment of Asimov's robots and a good introduction by Asimov

first-rate traditional Astounding - style sf.

Editorial Review:

BEYOND AURORA AWAITS A BRAVE NEW WORLD...OF ROBOTS

A man without memory named Derec, and a mysterious woman known as Ariel are trapped on the confusing, surprising, and sometimes deadly world of Robot City.

Having solved the murder of an unknown human and proven to the robots that they are innocent, Derec and Ariel are faced with ever-growing emergencies. They discover that the City contains a cyborg that is dangerously insane, and learn of a new form of self loathing called roboticide. Derec learns that Ariel is stricken with a disease that leads to fatal madness, and both are startled to learn that the robot's positronic consciousness has given rise to artistic expressions even as the City itself grows ever more deadly to all of its inhabitants.

The late Isaac Asimov challenged a talented group of science-fiction writers to resolve the conundrums he set for them in the complex robot mystery set early in the timeline of his robot and Foundation universes.
