Editorial Review:

This book, first published in 1969 and now made available in paperback with a new foreword by the author, is widely regarded as one of the best studies of Rousseau's thought in any language. In it, Professor Shklar examines Rousseau's central concern: given that modern civilisation is intolerable and a return to the state of nature impossible, how is man to arrange his existence in society? Mrs Shklar emphasises the importance for Rousseau of psychological factors, and shows how, when mediated through his images of authority and use of metaphor, they bring him to his notorious view that man is 'everywhere in chains'. In Mrs Shklar's view, Rousseau's final conclusion is almost equally pessimistic: the chances are very remote that we can overcome the psychological obstacles to become both men and citizens.

Editorial Review:

"Civil Society" discusses some of the meanings and preconditions of freedom, responsibility and social order. Keith Tester argues that these are problems of modernity. The imagination of civil society created a milieu which at once was the location and defence of social self-sufficiency in the world. Tester identifies the origins of civil society in the work of Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau and the often forgotten philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment. It shows how the assumptions of civil society and its oppressive state of nature, fed into the sociological and philosophical discourses which emerged in the 19th century. Tester does not ask "what is civil society?". Instead he asks "why is civil society?". He concludes that through civil society, the protaganists and heirs of European modernity struggled to make their world meaningful and safe. Civil society involved the establishment of boundaries between the community and the social and the terrifying milieu of Nature.

Editorial Review:

As Apel himself notes in his preface, the expression "Transformation of Philosophy" bears an ambiguity, naming both a change that took place in the development of philosophy as well as Apel's own systematic project. As a historical approach the title characterizes the transformation that philosophy has undergone in 20th century philosophy through an emphasis on the mediation and the configuring power of language. Apel focuses on three main currents, represented by Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Peirce.

Editorial Review:

How consciousness can cure the socioeconomic ills of society and restore hope in the workplace and at home. * A book for every individual who has ever dreamed of running a * successful business without having to sacrifice personal integrity. * Offers a blueprint for recovering our psychological, sexual, and * political health

A singularly important book . . . it shows in very practical ways how consciousness is the pivot of our social, political, and economic life.

With welcome candor and insight, The Invisible Player brings into focus why, despite tremendous financial success and technological advancement, people today remain unfulfilled, discouraged, and sick at heart from living in a world that has replaced compassion with violence and greed. Every professional man and woman who has ever dreamed of running a successful business without having to sacrifice personal integrity in the process will be inspired by Mario Kamenetsky's vision.

The Invisible Player guides us through the development of human consciousness--specifically how and why our socioeconomic consciousness has been shaped toward the pursuit of power and wealth rather than the enjoyment of life and love. Through examples of alternate socioeconomic systems, Kamenetsky offers us a blueprint of how we may reclaim our psychological, sexual, and political health to create a more joyful future in which we can succeed in combining our current technical and financial rationality with a more highly developed compassion for humanity.

Mis-titled 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The "Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy" series has generally been quite good. I recommend their "Continental Philosophy" introduction by Cutrofello which is excellent.

However, this particular entry by Christman is not as strong, in my opinion, as some of the others. My real disappointment is that it is generally confined to Political Philosophy. There is very little here about Social Philosophy. I urge the reader to inspect the Table of Contents which is available.

If you are primarily interested in an introduction to the liberal paradigm in political philosophy and contemporary (though mostly analytical philosophers) discourse on that paradigm, I can recommend the book, perhaps 4 stars. But be aware that its focus is much more narrow than the title might indicate.

Editorial Review:

This accessible and user-friendly text will prove invaluable to any student coming to social and political philosophy for the first time. It provides a broad survey of fundamental social and political questions in modern society, as well as clear, accessible discussions of the philosophical issues central to political thought. Topics covered include: the foundations of political authority, the nature and grounds of economic justice, the limits of tolerance, considerations of community, race, gender, and culture in questions of justice, and radical critiques of current political theories.

Editorial Review:

An introduction to environmental philosophy, this book offers an account of the debates over how we should think about the natural world and our place in it. It challenges many of the dichotomies (man/nature, green/non-green) often set up, advocating conciliation rather than confrontation. Beginning with chapers that outline various concerns, this book goes on to explore many of the claims made about these concerns from the moderate view that we ought to consider notonly ourselves but also other animals, to the seemingly more extravagent claims that non-sentiant life, rocks, deserts, indeed all the processes of nature should be valued for their own sake. The imporatnce of an aesthetic response to the environment is explored, opening the way for a human-centered posistionwhich is both more generous and more flexible than those often advanced elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Alienation, as a theme, deeply pervaded both the work and life of Max Weber, one of the pillars of modern sociology. In this excellent new book, Andrew M. Koch analyzes the genesis of the conecpt of alienation and then, in a brilliant and imaginative turn, works to recreate the context in which Weber understood alienation in both the intellectual and lived sense.
