Editorial Review:

The judgement of apostasy on the last page of al-Ghazali's "Incoherence of the Philosophers" has long been considered as one of the key reasons for the decline of peripatetic philiosophy in Islam. This study is an inquiry into the different elements of Islamic thought which led to al-Ghazali's conviction that three important conclusions of peripatetic philosophy must be considered as heresy. In its four parts, the volume describes the early usage of the judgement on apostates in Islam and the legal and theological developments, which led to its application against the secret apostates. It examines, how during the last decade of the 5th/11th century, the judgement could be turned against the philosophers. Finally the study determines the early effects of al-Ghazlai's judgement on the peripatetic philosophy both in the Mashriq and in al-Andalus.

Editorial Review:

The distinguished Moroccan philosopher Mohammed Abed al-Jabri, in this summary of his own work, examines the status of Arab thought in the late twentieth century. Al-Jabri rejects what he calls the current polarization of Arab thought between an imported modernism that disregards Arab tradition and a fundamentalism that would reconstruct the present in the image of an idealized past. Both past and present intellectual currents are examined. Al-Jabri first questions the current philosophical positions of the liberals, the Marxists, and the fundamentalists. Then he turns to history, exploring Arab philosophy in the tenth and twelfth centuries, a time of political and ideological struggle. In the writings of Ibn Hazm and Averroes, he identifies the beginnings of Arab rationalism, a rationalism he traces through the innovative fourteenth-century work of Ibn Khaldun. Al-Jabri offers both Western readers and his own compatriots a radical new approach to Arab thought, one that finds in the past the roots of an open, critical rationalism which he sees as emerging in the Arab world today. Mohammed Abed al-Jabri, Professor of Philosophy at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, is one of the major intellectual figures in the contemporary Arab world. His early research on the epistemological origins of Arab thought resulted in his major work, a trilogy: "naqd al 'aql al 'arabi", published in Beirut in 1982, 1986, and 1989. Translator Aziz Abbassi, a native of Morocco, is a writer and linguist currently living in the United States.

Depends on your scholarship. . . 5 out of 5 stars.

While I am, for the casual reader, frightened of the rigid scholarly nature of this book, I am confident that it is one of the most intricately authentic books of historical Medieval philosophical thought being published today. Knowing the author personally, I am well aware of his veritable grasp of a variety of knowledges. Fluent in several languages and educated at the University of Bonn in Germany, Dr. Kassim is now an ever effulgent professor of wit and wisdom to a perpetually dwindling humanities and philosophy department at the University of Central Florida. With a teaching style that blends the menacing intensity of Anastasia's Rasputin (with a set of eyes to match) and the brilliance of a comically humbled intellectual giant, Husain is worthy of any budding, continuing, or advanced medievalist scholar. This being stated, I highly recommend not only purchasing the book, but also registering in, if at all possible, the Unversity of Central Florida's Medieval Philosophy course to greatly supplement the text.

Editorial Review:

Prominent Arab intellectuals of our century, Christian, Muslim, secularist and fundamentalist, consider the disregard for the rationalism of Averroes (Ibn Ruwd, 1126-1198), who once stirred Europe with his commentaries on Aristotle, to be a major reason for the decay of Islamic culture. They criticize both Islamic reform movements and mere westernization and try with Ibn Ruwd's help to spread critical, rational and realistic thinking, in order to place the Arabs on a cultural par with the West. This volume analyzes for the first time the different philosophical and historical approaches and social aims of authors like Farah Antun, Muhammad bAmmara, Muhammad al-gabiri, Hasan Hanafi and Tayyib Tizini within the framework of the Arabic reception of Ibn Ruwd since the end of the 19th century. This work was rewarded with the Ernst-Reuther-Preis for outstanding dissertations.

Editorial Review:

Thirty-four scholars from 18 countries on five continents met in Cairo to debate for the first time the ideals of the Enlightenment and secularism while celebrating the 800th anniversary of the death of one of Islam's greatest philosophers. Muslim philosopher Ibn Rushd (1126-1198), known in the West as Averroes, may be viewed as a medieval precursor of the European Enlightenment and as a rallying point for dialogue between East and West. Averroes' attempt to harmonise philosophy and religion, reason and faith, led to a rethinking of the tenets of Christianity. His work spurred on some of the great rational syntheses of Christian thought, such as Thomas Aquinas's "Summa Theologica". This book offers a rare opportunity to learn about the contemporary Arab world and its efforts to dialogue with the West.

English readers can begin to explore Islamic texts directly. Shah Wali Allah writes in a difficult style; Hermansen smoothes the way considerably. The biographical introduction is helpful. Rather than try to re-interpret Islam for themselves, modern Muslims should spend their time and energy learning from those who used their monumental knowledge and experience for the task. Another layer to add to the complexity of "orthodox Sufism." Paperback in the works???

Editorial Review:

The Conclusive Argument of God is the master work of Shah Wali Allah of Delhi (1762), considered to be the most important Muslim thinker of pre-modern South Asia. This work, originally written in Arabic, represents a synthesis of the Islamic intellectual disciplines authoritative in the 18th century. In order to argue for the rational, ethical, and spiritual basis for the implementation of the hadith injunctions of the Prophet Muhammad, Shah Wali Allah develops a cohesive schema of the metaphysical, psychological, and social knowledge of his time. This work provides an extensive and detailed picture of Muslim theology and interpretive strategies on the eve of the modern period and is still evoked by numerous contemporary Islamic movements.
