Jainism is an ancient religion of nonviolence made popular by Gandhi in the 20th century. A religion without a god, it reveals what is truly divine in the innermost part of every living being. This all-encompasing volume analyzes the history, the philosophy, the mythology, the institutions, the social aspects, and the main practices of this centuries-old Indian tradition.

Advaita Vedanta ,String theory And Cosmology 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book on Advaita Vedanta in relation to modern science.Difficult topics such as Various Cosmological theories and modern Quantum field theories are presented clearly and convincingly. The basic ideas about Advaita Vedanta are explained lucidly. The compatibility of Advaita Vedanta and the latest modern theories becomes very evident after one reads this book to the end.The referencesto Vedas,Upanishads and the latest scientific developments are copius . Every physist must read this book. The importance of consciousness in quantum field theory is rationally explained.

I hope the book "The Maya In Physics" by the same author complement to this book.

Editorial Review:

A vibration theory has been brought out with a fusion of the doctrines of the Vedantic virbration, the Saiva vibration and modern physics. A confluence of the concepts of non-dualistic Vedanta, Kashmiri Saiva monism, cosmology, astrophysics, superstring theory, relativity theory and quantum mechanics is clearly visible in the book.

Required reading for all seekers of the truth 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is the first Krishnamurti book that I read and without doubt I would recommend to anyone reading this review to buy this book. As far as I am concerned this should be required reading for all high school students.

The book opens your mind up to clear thinking and exposes the self delusion that most of us live with on a daily bases. At a 112 pages this book is an excellent quick read and I imagine it is an excellent introduction to Krishnamurti but I can not say for certain as I have not read any of his other works. I can say without doubt what a profound impact that this book had on me and that after reading this book I will certainly study Krishnamurti further as well as recommend him to anyone who asks.

Some of Krishnamurti was hard to read because I did not want to have those particular illusions dispelled. If you prefer to read a feel good new age book then be prepared for a shock as Krishnamurti reveals the truth about the human condition.

Before describing what Krishnamurti teaches I must qualify it by saying that in my opinion it is almost impossible or impossible to view or discuss any subject completely objectively. The very fact that you have a subject and an object automatically means that the object is outside of the subject and therefore can never represent whole truth of the object. This perception of the object is automatically biased. Further quantum theory experiments are highly suggestive that there is no such thing as a neutral observation. I believe that Krishnamurti comes very close to neutral observation of the truth as is humanly possible. Even he admits that his thought is not 100% perfect but I am more than willing to forgive the few imperfections that you might find in his thought.

Krishnamurti provides only two methods for increasing your self knowledge. The first thing he teaches is guiding us through clear thought processes along with him so that we can learn to think clearly as see something "as it is" rather than with our usual biases, opinions and filtered perceptions. The second thing he teaches is that this power of logical unbiased deduction is the result of our ability to stay in the present moment. If we are present enough we can be aware of our biases in the moment they arise rather than following them unconsciously.

He states repeatedly that there is no teaching and no method and he does not specify a way to stay in the present moment. This does not mean that one should make no effort and do nothing rather it means that there is no intellectual method of attaining clarity of mind and perception. The way to attain clarity is through present moment awareness rather than thought. He repeatedly states the importance of staying in the now moment but never specifies how we should achieve this. Methods of working with present awareness are taught by classical teachers of meditation as well as modern masters like Eckhart Tolle in his book "The power of now". There is no incompatibility between the "no method, no teaching" of Krishnamurti and the methods used to train awareness prescribed by the classical and modern masters. These methods work with awareness directly and do not use thought.

Editorial Review:

Written between 1916 and 1932, the four works that make up Vows and Observances were written for Satyagraha Ashram, the religious community Mahatma Gandhi founded. In four parts addressing such fundamental questions of life as truth, love, work, and poverty, the writings are as relevant to modern western readers as they were to their original audiences. His discussion of swadeshi, a principle of commitment to local economic activity with roots in ancient India, strikes an important contemporary chord as the world moves toward globalization.

The most important book ever written 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is the only English translation of Candrakirti's indispensable and supreme commentary, the Prasannapada, on Nagarjuna's masterpiece, Mula-madhyamaka-karikas (MMK for short).

The MMK is probably the best, most complete exposition of Nagarjuna's most advanced teachings, which are the most advanced teachings of at least all Indian Buddhism. It is exceptionally terse, however, so it is nearly impenetrable without Candrakirti's help via this commentary.

The translation is rather poor, but it's the only one we have. It is helped by the translator's frequently inserting the Sanskrit terms being translated into the text. The translator has, in my opinion, a very spotty and inadequate understanding of Madhyamaka teachings, but some of the messages manage to come through anyhow.

I have been studying this book for 18 years. I couldn't understand a word of it for the first 5 years, then only a tiny bit for the next 9, but it finally came clear with the last 4 years' work. I found it to be the most helpful of all the Buddhist books I've ever read (and that's a lot) to understand and then realize the most advanced teachings of Buddhism.

I commend this book to all serious, advanced students and practitioners of Buddhism, while realizing that it is difficult to extract the value from it. Perhaps someday I may have the privilege, honor, and pleasure of translating it myself.

Yours in the dharma,

Editorial Review:

Originally published in 1979. The Prasannapada is the explanation of the versed aphorisms of Nagarjuna which are the first and basic statement of the Buddhist philosophy of the middle way. When first published, this volume was the first attempt, in any European language, to present all the essentials of this most radical of Buddhist philosophical works. Seventeen of its twenty-seven chapters have been chosen to give an integrated statement of every aspect of its arguments and conclusions.
