Excellent Collection 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best collections of articles about contemporary philosophy of mind. Together with Lycan's 'Mind and Cognition' and Rosenthal's 'The Nature of Mind' Block's 'Readings' put together what one could classify as a minimalist library on the topic. Many articles that have already become classics are here. If you intend to get serious about the philosophy of mind, go for these volumes.

Best collection for 1980's metaphysics of mind 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This collection remains the best introduction to debates about the mind/body problem and the metaphysics of mind. It's a starting point: it contains the state of the art as of 1980. From here you could go to Jackson and Braddon-Mitchell's text, or Chalmer's anthology, for contemporary developments; but the best foundation is Block's anthology.

Editorial Review:

In this introduction to the philosophical problems underlying the modern study of mind and behavior, Ned Block has collected the most important papers by the major figures in the field. He provides the only central reference work now available for scholars and students in this growing area of inquiry. Volume I covers general approaches to the study of the mind: behaviorism, reductionism, and functionalism.

Editorial Review:

This second Companion deals with the ancient theories of the psyche. The essays range over more than eight hundred years of psychological inquiry and provide critical analyses not only of the ancient discussions of the nature of the psyche and its states, but of such central topics as perception, subjectivity, the explanation of action, and what it is to be a person. In examining the wide variety of psychological theories offered by the ancient thinkers, from the increasingly complex materialism of the Presocratics and Hellenists to the dualism of Plato and Plotinus, the collection demonstrates that psychology had become a wide-ranging and sophisticated discipline long before Descartes.

Editorial Review:

This book addresses the richness and depth of our intimate relationships and especially those moments when we come to see ourselves and the other person in a new way.  In such moments we realize that however much we are influenced by heredity and upbringing, we are also agents with the capacity for openness and transcendence.

finally, an excellent book on psychoanalysis 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The titles (of the book; of this review) say it all; it is the first time in years I see a truly major, worthwhile, significant, quietly revolutionary book. (One notable and lamentable omission: the work of Paul Gray.) Anyone at all interested in psychoanalysis (my own field) ought to read it. And while you are at it, also look at my "Psychoanalysis as Praxis," and "Substance Abuse as Symptom."

Editorial Review:

A unique authoritative analysis of the individual an social concerns informing the politics of contemporary psychoanalysis.

Editorial Review:

Why was it France that spawned the radical post-structuralist rejection of the humanist concept of "man" as a rational, knowing subject? In this innovative cultural history, Carolyn J. Dean sheds new light on the origins of post-structuralist thought, paying particular attention to the reinterpretation of the self by Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, and other French thinkers.

Editorial Review:

Is psychology a science? Unlike Darwinian theory in biology or relativity and quantum theory in physics, psychology lacks the basic quantitative or conceptual foundation for a consensus view about how the mind works. Is psychology on the verge of developing such a foundation? "Probably not," answers psychologist William R. Uttal in this iconoclastic and critical examination of psychology's underlying principles, assumptions, and concepts.

In five in-depth chapters and one appendix, he explores the following key issues:

· What do we mean by "science" and can psychology be legitimately described as a science?
· What are the general principles that should be applied to any science?
· What is the role of mathematics in psychology?
· Given the current fragmented state of the discipline, is it possible to identify the general principles of a scientific psychology?
· Is experimental psychology just applied epistemology and not really scientific?

Uttal comes to the conclusion that psychology is a science only to the extent that it is behaviorist in orientation. By comparing his discipline to other sciences, he identifies its limits, establishes a set of principles that help to define psychology as a science, and suggests plausible future developments.

Editorial Review:

This provocative book argues that, very often, people may benefit from being constrained in their options or from being ignorant. The three long essays that constitute this book revise and expand the ideas developed in Jon Elster's classic study Ulysses and the Sirens. It is not simply a new edition of the earlier book though; many of the issues merely touched on before are explored here in much more detail. Elster shows how seemingly disparate examples that limit freedom of action reveal similar patterns, so much so that he proposes a new field of study: constraint theory. The book is written in Elster's characteristically vivid style and will interest professionals and students in philosophy, political science, psychology, and economics.
