Editorial Review:

`Through Haselager's presentation and analysis, readers will acquire an exceptionally clear understanding of what is at stake, and the prospects for victory by either side, in this key debate in cognitive science' - William Bechtel

`Folk Psychology' - our everyday talk of beliefs, desires and mental events - has long been compared with the technical language of `Cognitive Science'. Does folk psychology provide a correct account of the mental causes of our behaviour, or must our everyday terms ultimately be replaced by a language developed from computational models and neurobiology? This broad-ranging and accessible book addresses these questions, which lie at the heart of psychology and philosophy.

Providing a critical overview of the key literature in the field, including the seminal work of Fodor and Churchland, the author explores the classic `Frame Problem' and assesses the future prospects of cognitive science. The scope of the frame problem, touching on connectionism, non-demonstrative reasoning, representationalism and the language of thought, questions the very possibility of a truly artificial intelligence.

Cognitive Science and Folk Psychology offers an invaluable survey of some of the most exciting debates in current philosophy and psychology. It will be essential reading for students and academics in cognitive science, cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence and philosophy.

Editorial Review:

Published in English for the first time, this is a seminal work by an original and creative analytical thinker. Piera Aulagnier's The Violence of Interpretation bridges the work of Winnicott and Lacan, putting forward a theory of psychosis based on children's early experiences. The author's analysis of the relationship between the mother's verbal communication and the organization of the psychic experience of the infant, and of the earliest stage of development of unconscious fantasy starting from the "pictogram," have fundamental implications for the psychoanalytic theory of development.

contemporary study of common-sense psychology 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The title of the book is, in my opinioin, misleading. It is not a philosophical analysis of psychology as a science or a field of research activity. Rather, it analysis common-sense (folk) psychology in the light of contemporary cognitive science and philosophy. To a reader interesed in this special subject, the book is an excellent overview of (and contribution to) the current state of the art. But if you buy it for its more widely promising title, you may be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

This book presents an original and accessible analysis of the relationship between commonsense, or "folk," psychology and contemporary scientific psychology, focusing on the ways in which cognitive science presents a challenge to our commonsense self-image. It is designed as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate and beginning postgraduate students in philosophy and cognitive science, but as a text that not only surveys but advances the debates on the topics discussed, it will also be of interest to researchers working in these areas.

Excellent and Comprehensive 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is a simple (though not simpleminded) introduction to the philosophy of mind (includes such topics as "consciousness", "self", "mental phenomena", etc). McGinn writes eloquently and uses interesting metaphors (eg, refers to the brain as "that greyish dumpling"). It is highly recommended to the interested person who wants a comprehensive overview of this lively area of contemporary philosophy.

Editorial Review:

The Character of Mind provides a sweeping and accessible general introduction to the philosophy of mind. Colin McGinn covers all of the main topics--the mind-body problem, the nature of acquaintance, the relation between thought and language, agency, and the self.In particular, McGinn addresses the issue of consciousness, and the difficulty of combining the two very different perspectives on the mind that arise from introspection and from the observation of other people. This second edition has been updated with three new cutting-edge chapters on consciousness, content, and cognitive science to make it the reader of choice on this vital topic.

Editorial Review:

How do we, as interpreters and theorists in the human and social sciences, understand agency? What are the methods, models, and mediating theoretical frameworks that allow us to give a reliable and adequate account of beliefs, actions, and cultural practices? More specifically, how can we as interpretive analysts employ our own cognitive capacities so as to render the beliefs, intentions, and actions of other human beings intelligible? These are the leading questions that a group of well-established social philosophers explore in this volume in light of the most recent (and hotly debated) findings in cognitive science, developmental psychology, and philosophy of mind. In particular, the debate concerning simulation -- whether agents interpret others by means of implicit theoretical assumptions, or whether they rather simulate their behavior by putting themselves in their shoes -- has produced a wide set of important empirical and philosophical insights. This book takes up those insights and discusses their impact in the context of their most important paradigms in social methodology today.A systematic introduction pertaining to the understanding-explanation debate sets the stage, followed by eleven chapters representing the different approaches tot he field. The paradigms include Wittgensteinian, Davidsonian and Diltheyan approaches, hermeneutics and critical theory, game theory, naturalized epistemology, philosophy of history and twentieth-century social theory, as well as simulation approach proper. As stake are the relation between everyday and social-scientific interpretation, the role of empathy (or role-taking) in understanding human agency, the implications of attributing rationality in the course of interpretation, as well as the relation between rational and causal models in social explanation. The discussions cut across well-established disciplinary boundaries so that the book appeals to both analytic and hermeneutic traditions within philosophy. In addition, the book speaks to all who are engaged in interpreting or explaining human agency in the cultural and social sciences.

"Readings on Color v.1-2" 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This two volume set is an overview of modern color theory. Volume two, "The Science of Color" is useful to me today. The amount of empirical data in volume two surpassed anything I had learned before, while the suggested reading list opened the door to still better sources of information. Volume one is less useful to me, on a practical level, but provided thought provoking reading. I favor Edward Wilson Averill's nonanthropocentric account of color, which addresses color as a secondary quality of objects. Where volume one is psychological, volume two is scientific; and though they address different issues, each book illuminates the other. I reccommend buying both of them.

Editorial Review:

This text is part of a double volume anthology which presents a survey of current philosophical and scientific writings on colour. In this first volume, the introduction provides a philosophical background and links the philosophical issues to the empirical work covered in volume two.

Editorial Review:

This anthology focuses on emotions and motives that relate to our status as moral agents, our capacity for moral judgement, and the practices that help to define our social lives. Attachment, trust, respect, conscience, guilt, revenge, depravity, and forgiveness are among the topics discussed. Collectively, the thirteen essays in this collection represent a time-honored tradition in ethics: the effort to throw light on fundamental questions concerning the complexities of the human soul.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Combs updates his groundbreaking Field Theory of personality. This model grows out of Carl Rogers' ideas on client-centered therapy and has long been a major influence on theories of psychotherapy and personality that are in the humanistic and phenomenological traditions. Here Dr. Combs ties field psychology to the paradigm shifts in biophysical sciences, and so provides a unifying frame of reference for all branches of psychology. His concise approach to the topic makes this book of practical interest to students, clinical psychologists and counselors, as well as academics teaching upper-level or graduate causes in personality and on therapeutic techniques.
