Editorial Review:

One of the most important of Jung's longer works, and probably the most famous of his books, Psychological Types appeared in German in 1921 after a "fallow period" of eight years during which Jung had published little. He called it "the fruit of nearly twenty years' work in the domain of practical psychology," and in his autobiography he wrote: "This work sprang originally from my need to define the ways in which my outlook differed from Freud's and Adler's. In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one's psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person's judgment. My book, therefore, was an effort to deal with the relationship of the individual to the world, to people and things. It discussed the various aspects of consciousness, the various attitudes the conscious mind might take toward the world, and thus constitutes a psychology of consciousness regarded from what might be called a clinical angle."

In expounding his system of personality types Jung relied not so much on formal case data as on the countless impressions and experiences derived from the treatment of nervous illnesses, from intercourse with people of all social levels, "friend and foe alike," and from an analysis of his own psychological nature. The book is rich in material drawn from literature, aesthetics, religion, and philosophy. The extended chapters that give general descriptions of the types and definitions of Jung's principal psychological concepts are key documents in analytical psychology

Editorial Review:

What if apes had their own culture rather than one their human observers imposed on them? What if they reacted to situations with behavior learned through observation of their elders (culture) rather than with pure genetically coded instinct (nature)? Contemplating such a possibility is bound to shake centuries-old cultural convictions. In answering these questions, The Ape and the Sushi Master, by the eminent primatologist Frans de Waal, corrects our arrogant assumption that humans are the only form of intelligent life to have made the leap from the natural to the cultural domain. The book's title derives from an analogy de Waal draws between the way behavior is transmitted in ape society and the way sushi-making skills are passed down from sushi master to apprentice. Like the apprentice, young apes watch their group mates at close range, absorbing the methods and lessons of each of their elders' actions. Responses long thought to be instinctive are actually learned behavior, de Waal argues, and constitute ape culture. A delightful, partly autobiographical mix of anecdotes, rigorous research, and fascinating speculation, The Ape and the Sushi Master challenges our most basic assumptions about who we are and how we differ from other animals. Apes are holding a new mirror up to us in which they are not human caricatures but members of our extended family with their own resourcefulness and dignity. For over a century, UFO spotters have told us that we are not alone. In The Ape and the Sushi Master, Frans de Waal makes the equally startling claim that, biologically speaking, we never were.

Detailed, comprehensive resource on group therapy 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It took just two days to read this gem of a book on the application of cognitive-behavioral and process group expertise to maximize outcomes of cognitive-behavioral group therapy. The authors not only present detailed updates on the CBT and process group literature, but also offer comprehensive outlines of previously tested protocols for group therapy of many common DSM-IV disorders. By offering a readable and comprehensive account of the relevant literature on group therapy and CBT, the authors also ignited a better understanding of further research needs.

Editorial Review:

An authoritative guide for practitioners, this book offers clear advice on how to structure and lead cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) groups and overcome common challenges that arise. Specific, evidence-based group assessment and treatment protocols are provided for a range of frequently encountered disorders. Emphasizing that a CBT group is more than the sum of its individual members, the authors show how to understand and use group process to optimize outcomes. Up to date, accessible, and highly practical, the book is filled with session outlines, sample dialogues, checklists, troubleshooting tips, and other user-friendly features.

A great curriculum for busy psychologists and counselors 4 out of 5 stars.
65 of 67 people found this review helpful.

I am a busy psychologist working in a large school system. With my caseload, I didn't have time to write my own curriculum for groups, so when I found this at a conference, I was so excited. It has a day by day program of activities. Some are a little "hokey" for older teens (hence the 4 stars) so you may want to modify as appropriate, but my favorite thing about this is it includes pre- and post-tests which give you empirical evidence as to the effectiveness of the program. I am ordering the version for my elementary students as well.

use with caution 3 out of 5 stars.

It should be noted that the activities in the book are geared towards early middle schoolers. I was hoping to use these activities for a wider range of adolescents. The book offers some great ideas and topics that are very important to many adolescents. I feel that overall I will only use this book as a guideline to develop topics to cover in different groups.

Concise, clear reference 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the study of human or non-human behavior in lab or field settings. The authors pack nothing but the vital basics in this guide. They cover topics such as research design (sample sizes) and data analysis (parametric vs. nonparametric stats). Reading this book is a great use of your time if you're considering research on animal behavior.

A perfect introduction 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This book is a perfect introduction to the field of behavioral data collection. I purchased this book for my first behavioral study of captive primates and it was extremely helpful. If you have never conducted research in this area, this book is a must have.

Editorial Review:

Measuring Behaviour is a guide to the principles and methods of quantitative studies of behavior, with an emphasis on techniques of direct observation, recording, and analysis. In the new edition, all sections have been updated and revised, particularly those dealing with the technology of recording behavior, and there are new sections on regression and multivariate statistics. As with the first edition, the authors strive for brevity and clarity of presentation.

Editorial Review:

Get innovative ideas and effective interventions for your group therapy

Group work requires facilitators to use different skills than they would use in individual or family therapy. The Group Therapist's Notebook: Homework, Handouts, and Activities for Use in Psychotherapy offers facilitators effective strategies to gather individuals who have their own unique needs together to form a group where each member feels comfortable exploring personal--and often painful--topics. This resource provides creative handouts, homework, and activities along with practical ideas and interventions appropriate for a variety of problems and population types. Each chapter gives detailed easy-to-follow instructions, activity contraindications, and suggestions for tracking the intervention in successive meetings. Every intervention is backed by a theoretical or practical rationale for use, and many chapters feature a helpful illustrative clinical vignette.

Group work has several benefits, including the ability to treat a greater number of clients with fewer resources. Group therapy work also relies on various theories that may seem to be difficult to apply to clinical practice. The Group Therapist's Notebook is a practical guide that builds a bridge between theory and practice with ease. The text provides help for psychotherapists who are either beginning group practice or already utilizing groups as part of their practice and need a fresh set of ideas. The workbook framework allows group specialists to generate approaches and modify exercises to fit the varying needs of their clients. This guide offers a wide variety of valid approaches that effectively address client concerns. The book provides therapists with tips and ideas for starting and facilitating a group, assists them through sets of interventions, activities, and assignments, then showcases a variety of interventions for needs-specific populations or problems. Special sections are included with interventions for teens, young adults, couples, and family groups.

Interventions in The Group Therapist's Notebook include:

Anger management skills
Ease feelings of shame and guilt
Substance use and abuse
Grief and loss
Positive body image
Guidance through change
Independence and belonging
Interpersonal skills
Coping skills
Crisis intervention strategies
much, much more!

The Group Therapist's Notebook is an essential resource for both novice and more experienced practitioners working in the mental health field, including counselor educators, social workers, guidance counselors, prevention educators, and other group facilitators. Every nonprofit agency, counseling center, private practice, school, hospital, treatment facility, or training center that organizes and implements therapy groups of any type should have this guide in their library.

A Useful Companion 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 31 people found this review helpful.

While the work of Carl Gustav Jung is of immense importance to the development of psychological and philosophical thought in the 20th century, the written works of Jung and many of his followers are framed within the historical context of the first half of the century. In more recent years, many volumes have been published to explain Jungian thought, often to popularize it, occasionally to excoriate it. This collection of essays edited by Polly Young Eisendrath and Terence Dawson is an excellent critical introduction to Jungian and post-Jungian thought from a 21st century perspective. While very readable, the essays are scholarly and avoid oversimplifying the ideas to make them more popularly palatable. In addition to being a useful introduction, the depth of the essays should make them interesting even to readers who are familiar with Jung and his work.

Editorial Review:

This new edition represents a wide-ranging and up to date critical introduction to the psychology of Carl Jung, one of the founders of psychoanalysis. Including two new essays and thorough revisions of most of the original chapters, it constitutes a radical new assessment of his legacy. Andrew Samuels's introduction succinctly articulates the challenges facing the Jungian community. The fifteen essays set Jung in the context of his own time, outline the current practice and theory of Jungian psychology and show how Jungians continue to question and evolve his thinking and apply it to aspects of modern culture and psychoanalysis. The volume includes a full chronology of Jung's life and work, extensively revised and up to date bibliographies, a case study and a glossary. It is an indispensable reference tool for both students and specialists, written by an international team of Jungian analysts and scholars from various disciplines.

How To Make Yourself Happy and Remarkably Less Disturbable 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Albert Ellis is a recognized expert in the field of rational emotive behavior therapy, which concentrates of changing behavior by replacing irrational beliefs with rational ones. A psychologist with a clinical practice, Dr. Ellis has written sixty-five books and published numerous articles on human behavior. How To Make Yourself Happy and Remarkably Less Disturbable, his newest book, offers readers practical guidance for achieving happy and satisfying lives.
Dr. Ellis is convinced that people have the ability to change their lives through the choices they make. He says you can "learn to change your thoughts, feelings, and actions and thereby reduce your emotional distress."
All of us have goals. Often someone or something keeps us from achieving those goals. Some people then have "negative feelings like sadness, disappointment, regret, and frustration," that can stimulate them to find ways of overcoming whatever is keeping them from their goals. Others have unreasonable feelings that result in emotions that produce self-defeating behaviors like depression, panic, or self-hatred. Ellis teaches readers how to recognize those unreasonable feelings and convert them to healthy emotions.
The basis of his process involves determining what beliefs you have that trigger your emotional responses. Irrational beliefs include "I-can't-stand-itis," absolutes like must and should, awfulizing, and worthlessness. You then dispute those beliefs with questions like: Is my belief logical? What evidence supports it? Is it really this bad or awful? Disputing irrational beliefs opens the way to replace them with more rational beliefs, like "I don't like this, but I can stand it." Rational beliefs allow you to handle adversities with less distress.
Ellis includes case histories of people who have overcome severe unhappiness with his techniques.
Readers wishing to ease their emotional distress will find How To Make Yourself Happy a useful resource.

Editorial Review:

Each of us has healthy, constructive and creative tendencies, but unfortunately, we also have their unhealthy, destructive counterparts. These self-defeating tendencies, moreover, are usually powerful and frequent. Ellis shows precisely what our natural constructive inclinations are and how to use them to overcome harmful leanings. See how to: defeat inherited and acquired tendencies to become severely anxious, depressed, enraged, self-hating, and/or self-pitying; change thoughts, feelings, and actions that lead to disturbances in order to make yourself considerably less upset and less self-defeating; persistently and strongly keep using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) methods until they become automatic and habitual, thereby making yourself less disturbable even when adversities occur in life.
