A Pleasure to Read and Consider 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Violet's new book is both theoretical and practical in scope. Reading this book stimulated my own creative thinking about helping children integrate their feelings and experiences. Violet writes about working with precision (commonly achieving tangible results), while treating both the child and therapist as wonderfully rich, whole organisms. I reproduced a chapter for my staff therapists under publisher permission, introducing staff I treasure to an therapist/author I respect. I am a Gestalt-oriented psychologist, and Violet pioneered the translation of that therapy into treatment for children. This is a joyful therapy intended for those who want to enhance their capacity to engage in powerful therapeutic contact with a child. Thanks Violet.

Editorial Review:

Hidden Treasure is a follow up to Oaklander’s best selling book, Windows To Our Children. It contains material that she has developed over the last 27 years.

The book provides an approach to working with children and adolescents that involves a variety of creative, projective and expressive techniques with Gestalt Therapy, theory, philosophy and practice as the underlying framework. The focus is to provide the child with a means for expressing his or her innermost feelings, to foster self-awareness and self-discovery, to enhance self-esteem, and in general, to promote emotional growth. The approach is applicable to a wide variety of ages as well as settings as individual work, family work, and group settings.

This book will interest child and adolescent psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, interns, school personnel, as well as graduate-level students. Parents of young children may also find it helpful.

The Alternative for Cognitively-Oriented People 5 out of 5 stars.
51 of 53 people found this review helpful.

Virtually everyone knows of AA and its efforts to address problem drinking -- it is the largest, most visible and most accessible group, and the group that most entering recovery will either gravitate towards or be directed to by the therapy community. Yet, AA, for all of its benefits, doesn't work as a program for everyone -- particularly for those who are not spiritually inclined (and don't want to have to become spiritually inclined in order to recover) or those who are more cognitively-oriented people. There are thankfully alternatives to AA available for those who seek them out, and the "RET" (rational-emotive therapy) approach founded by Dr. Ellis, and which is the foundation of the SMART Recovery approach to recovery, is well outlined in this easy-to-read, easy-to-understand book.

The basic idea is very simple ... you are not powerless over alcohol as AA says but rather you are empowered, or exercising your power, every time you make a decision in life about anything, including the decision to drink. When you drink even in spite of the fact that your drinking is interfering with your life goals (as you define them) or causing you tangible problems (legal, financial, relationship, career, etc.), then you have a good sign that your decision-making process around drinking alcohol needs some examination. RET is a technique that helps the individual drill down into her cognitive processes and isolate the real mental issues underlying her decision to keep drinking under these circumstances. In particular, a lot of attention is paid to "stinking thinking", which in RET terms means underlying beliefs we may have about ourselves, the world around us and others that are irrational, self-defeating, and lead us to make the decision to drink. RET teaches the individual how to unearth these often hidden, reflexive beliefs, examine them, challenge them, and replace them with healthier, rational, self-helping beliefs, ones which will not lead one to make the irrational decision to problem drink. RET also teaches how to relate more healthily to life's frustrations and disappointments by placing them in perspective, not overblowing them, and developing a higher frustration tolerance over time ... in other words, how to deal more effectively with the frustrating things in life, in ourselves, and in others that may have led us in the past to decide to drink. In all, RET teaches the individual to be much more aware of what is going on inside themselves, to be much more in control of that interior situation, or at least be able to manage it and relate to it more effectively, and thereby to make better choices about how to act ---- rather than being largely unaware of what is happening interiorly, but nonetheless being subjected to what may be a somewhat or largely irrational set of interior beliefs, whether we are aware or not, and acting accordingly.

In all, it is a wonderful approach, for some people. I don't believe that this approach is for everyone (and neither is AA), but if the AA approach isn't working for you (see title of the book), and particularly if you are the kind of person who is more cognitively oriented, then Ellis' approach of RET is certainly worth a read, and just may hold the key to your own recovery.

Editorial Review:

The first book that applies the insights of rational-emotive therapy to the recovery from problem drinking.

Adventures in being. 4 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

Meister Eckart once asked, "How can anyone live without being instructed in the art of living and dying?" Examining what it means to truly live, psychologist and social philosopher, Eric Fromm (1900-80) drafted the manuscript of this book as a supplement and expansion to his book, TO HAVE OR TO BE. This book, which is somewhat uneven, is not so much a how-to book on how to live life more meaningfully, but an insightful exploration into the theories of escaping the "shackles" of greed and illusion that prevent us from realizing our full potentials for self-awareness, well being, independence, and the capacity to love.

The "average man today," Fromm observes, thinks very little for himself, and his capacity to concentrate has become "a rarity" (pp. 44, 89). We are a composite of data presented by schools and mass media, and we know very little from our own observations and thinking. We live our lives by the political, idealogical, and religious cliches that appeal most to our character and social class. Fromm encourages his reader to avoid the false paths ("shams") in the field of human enlightenment, and to also avoid "trivial talk." Instead, we should pursue self-awareness through the difficult practices of concentration, meditation, psychoanalysis, and breaking through the consumer/property structure of our existence.

G. Merritt

Editorial Review:

This classic work by psychologist and social philosopher Eric Fromm builds upon his previous popular book To Have or to Be? The Art of Being teaches us to avoid the tantalizing illusions of our consumer-driven world by learning to function as a whole person from a state of inner completeness or being. The transition from an identity of having to being creates a state of enlightened psychological and spiritual happiness. Fromm observes that the modern person is less a self-reflective being than a composite of data promoted by the mass media, and he encourages us to pursue true self-awareness beyond simple political, ideological, and religious clichés. By learning to be centered in the self, the individual is less swayed by the endless pressures and dissatisfactions of the culture of consumerism.

Every time I pick up a Yalom book I ask myself why I have waited so long to read another one. His books are a pleasure to read and speak to people on all levels of experience and expertise. The title of this book says it all and is the perfect book for someone who will be working in an inpatient setting. This is a must-read for all professionals working with this population and speaks to the challenges and frustrations of this environment.

Editorial Review:

This essential book for front-line clinicians offers new ways of conceptualizing the techniques of group therapy for use on acute wards. Yalom makes a strong case for the efficacy of group therapy on all acute wards. He discusses how to structure the session and the kind of support that should be offered. The emphasis is on the here-and-now. He then presents two models of groups: one for the higher functioning and one for the more regressed psychotic patients.

Editorial Review:

How does city life change the way we act? What accounts for the increasing prevalence of violence and anxiety in our world? In this new edition of his controversial 1969 bestseller, The Human Zoo, renowned zoologist Desmond Morris argues that many of the social instabilities we face are largely a product of the artificial, impersonal confines of our urban surroundings. Indeed, our behavior often startlingly resembles that of captive animals, and our developed and urbane environment seems not so much a concrete jungle as it does a human zoo. Animals do not normally exhibit stress, random violence, and erratic behavioruntil they are confined. Similarly, the human propensity toward antisocial and sociopathic behavior is intensified in todays cities. Morris argues that we are biologically still tribal and ill-equipped to thrive in the impersonal urban sprawl. As important and meaningful today as it was a quarter-century ago, The Human Zoo sounds an urgent warning and provides startling insight into our increasingly complex lives.

A Book for All Types 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

People Types and Tiger Stripes. Gordon Lawrence. Gainesville, FL: Center for Applications of Psychological Type, Inc., 2000. 222 pp.

Dr. Gordon Lawrence's, People Types and Tiger Stripes, published by the Center for Applications of Psychological Type, outfits the personality Type practitioner with an easy to grasp discussion of Personality Type theory (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) that specifically illustrates its usefulness in the educational arena.

In less than 100 pages, anyone interested in the subject of Personality Type Preference, pioneered by Isabel Myers Briggs, will discover the basic concepts of Type Theory and learn to recognize their own kind of Type behavior. Part 2 delves deeper into the dynamics of type, particularly how the mental processes of Type function in individuals, and the application of Type. The book is filled with understandable charts, practical exercises, and helpful explanations. This book will prove a useful resource for those who are interested in the learning process and designing curricula that capitalizes on the knowledge of Type Preference.

I have especially appreciated Dr. Lawrence's approach to the Mental Processes as "habits of the mind" and his explanation of Type Dynamics, a particularly difficult concept to grasp when explaining Type. Practitioners will also find new ways of illustrating Type and explaining its many nuances.

Lawrence, (an ENTP) goes out of his way to practice what he says about learning styles. This book is for all Types. He has something for the linear learner, as well as "a-linear" learners, those "Intuitives" and "Perceptives" who like to jump in the middle of it.

I use my copy of "Types and Stripes" frequently. I have found it a ready resource when explaining Type to organizations and in my instructional role as an adult teacher.

Editorial Review:

People Types & Tiger Stripes is a classic general book on the use and application of the MBTI® instrument as well as the definitive book in the field of education and type. In the third edition, Gordon Lawrence doubled the content, reflecting the work he has done over the past 15 years. People Types & Tiger Stripes also includes two writings by Isabel Briggs Myers.

Editorial Review:

Practically Shameless is the first book to explain the compassionate psychology of Carl G. Jung through one person's intimate experiences of shadow, including a riveting first-person account of Shadow Work processes. Practically Shameless reveals for the first time the real buying power of archetypes in daily life for creative self-expression, building self-esteem, getting your power back, letting go of destructive behavior patterns, and overcoming depression and the belief that life holds no meaning.

Many books say they will change your life. Practically Shameless actually will, by explaining for the first time the inner mechanics of change and offering an approach that has worked for thousands of people since 1990. Change is hard because there's a part of the self whose job it is to resist change. It does so for the best of reasons -- to protect us from something it considers worse than the change we want to make. Most of us think of our resistance to change as a problem. Practically Shameless reveals for the first time that our resistance is a good guy, not a bad guy, in our inner drama. It demonstrates the surprising key to turning resistance into forward movement: befriending that resistance by honoring the role it's been playing in protecting us. Once honored, our resistance becomes willing to stand down and to take on, with its treasury of information on risks we've faced in the past, a new role as valued ally as we begin to move forward. An exercise in Chapter 19 invites the reader to step into this inner protector to be honored directly by the author and begin making lasting change.

An Appendix on the Shadow Work Model details the specific emotional wound underlying each of the 16 varieties of shadow, to help lift the shame enshrouding it and thus to help facilitate change. With a Foreword by Shadow Work founder Cliff Barry and illustrations by Cindy Kalman, formerly of PBS's McNeil-Lehrer News Hour. See excerpts, additional testimonials from authors and readers, study guides, excerpts from interviews with Alyce's father, and more, at the Practically Shameless Press website. Also available from Amazon on audio CD, unabridged, with an illustrated booklet.

Editorial Review:

One of the most important of Jung's longer works, and probably the most famous of his books, Psychological Types appeared in German in 1921 after a "fallow period" of eight years during which Jung had published little. He called it "the fruit of nearly twenty years' work in the domain of practical psychology," and in his autobiography he wrote: "This work sprang originally from my need to define the ways in which my outlook differed from Freud's and Adler's. In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types; for it is one's psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person's judgment. My book, therefore, was an effort to deal with the relationship of the individual to the world, to people and things. It discussed the various aspects of consciousness, the various attitudes the conscious mind might take toward the world, and thus constitutes a psychology of consciousness regarded from what might be called a clinical angle."

In expounding his system of personality types Jung relied not so much on formal case data as on the countless impressions and experiences derived from the treatment of nervous illnesses, from intercourse with people of all social levels, "friend and foe alike," and from an analysis of his own psychological nature. The book is rich in material drawn from literature, aesthetics, religion, and philosophy. The extended chapters that give general descriptions of the types and definitions of Jung's principal psychological concepts are key documents in analytical psychology
