The Practical Therapist Series 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 24 people found this review helpful.

While Dr. Ellis has already published many popular books on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), this book from "The Practical Therapist Series" is targeted to doctors qualified to practice psychotherapy, who have no time to read lengthy popular books. While the audience of this hardcover is health care professionals, I, not being a medic myself, found this work pleasant to read and easy to understand

Much of the theory of REBT was derived from philosophy rather than psychology. Dr. Ellis has read many works of ancient and modern philosophers before devising this framework. REBT is cognitive, emotive, and behavioral, and is not by any means strictly "intellectual". REBT states that is not an adversity (A) that negatively affects the human but the belief (B) of the individual about this adversity, that leads to negative consequences (C). These are the simple but most important ABCs of the therapy.

Not being a psychotherapy practitioner, I can recommend this book to anyone who is interested in what REBT is.

Editorial Review:

This up-to-date comprehensive guidebook -- an all-new resource for practicing therapists from the father of rational therapy -- includes thorough discussions of theory and procedures, case examples, and dozens of exercises. Modern cognitive-behavioral therapy has its roots in the rational approach created by Albert Ellis in the 1950s. Now known as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Ellis's systematic, integrative approach has grown and matured into a powerful mainstream psychotherapy. Hundreds of thousands of patients have benefited from the active interventions of therapists using the REBT model.

Major themes in this user-friendly manual: Theory of REBT, Practice of REBT, Cognitive Techniques, Emotive and Experiential Techniques, Behavioral Techniques, Integration of REBT with Other Therapies.

Editorial Review:

Most writing in marriage and family therapy presents readers with an established system of how to change families so as to relieve the symptoms of the stress they are suffering. The reader is encouraged to follow a rigid system and adopt one particular theoretical basis for bringing about change. The authors, two hands-on teachers, offer something different. They are sharing a "clinical anthropologist's" view of what happens when a family interacts with a professional who has dallied with the fads but finds success in doing what works. The authors have gathered data and organized it into a multifaceted notebook with value for both the novice and more experienced therapist. Hidden behind the descriptions of what to do and when readers can see the message of gentle care offered to families in pain. Topics covered include: first contact procedures, assessment, initial and middle stage treatment procedures, procedures for challenging sessions, and more. A resource all clinicians can draw upon, especially those early in their careers and those just beginning as marriage and family therapists.

Editorial Review:

`I looked forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. It reflects the best of the Gestalt approach - it is clear, challenging and refreshing. Emphasis is placed on the importance of a safe and supporting framework within which therapeutic work takes place, and this is reflected in the reader feeling a real connection with the authors.

The humanistic element of Gestalt comes through clearly in this book. Not only is this an important read for those training in Gestalt but it is equally important for trainees and established therapists in the humanistic and integrated field' - Counsellingbooks.com

`This book was put on our reading list for diploma students in humanistic counselling, and it has been snapped up by the students' - Bee Springwood, Self & Society

'Written in a clear and accessible style, this slim volume will be valued as a wise guide in attaining the necessary skills for a Gestalt flavoured clinical practice... It is in the reference material from Gestalt practitioners across the world that the authors provide a succinct integration of Gestalt theory and practice from these last fifty years. This is one of the understated but powerful aspects of the book... I recommend that all Gestalt practitioners get a copy of Skills in Gestalt Counselling & Psychotherapy for their professional library and make sure that it is mandatory reading for their students' - Dorothy E Siminovitch, A Gestalt Guide for the Journey of Skill Development

'An informative book, well worth the money, that will enrich the practice of any practitioner' - Stress News

Skills in Gestalt Counselling & Psychotherapy is a practical introduction to the different techniques used at each stage of the counselling process. The book takes the reader through the process from beginning to termination and focuses on skills which arise out of Gestalt theory as well as those invoked by the counselling relationship.

Accessibly written by experienced practitioners, the book gives clear guidelines on: establishing the relationship; assessment and goal-setting; developing the client's awareness; maintaining the relationship and bringing the counselling to an end.

The authors also examine the spiritual dimension of counselling and offer guidance on some of the special considerations affecting counsellors such as the context in which they are working, the duration of the relationship, and particular problems with which clients present. For all those training in Gestalt or who wish to sharpen their skills as practitioners, this will be essential reading.

Editorial Review:

"Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model of something that was almost completely lacking in Western psychology--an account of the development phases of higher consciousness.... Jung's insistence on the psychogenic and symbolic significance of such states is even more timely now than then. As R. D. Laing stated... 'It was Jung who broke the ground here, but few followed him.'"--From the introduction by Sonu Shamdasani

Jung's seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. With sensitivity toward a new generation's interest in alternative religions and psychological exploration, Sonu Shamdasani has brought together the lectures and discussions from this seminar. In this volume, he re-creates for today's reader the fascination with which many intellectuals of prewar Europe regarded Eastern spirituality as they discovered more and more of its resources, from yoga to tantric texts. Reconstructing this seminar through new documentation, Shamdasani explains, in his introduction, why Jung thought that the comprehension of Eastern thought was essential if Western psychology was to develop. He goes on to orient today's audience toward an appreciation of some of the questions that stirred the minds of Jung and his seminar group: What is the relation between Eastern schools of liberation and Western psychotherapy? What connection is there between esoteric religious traditions and spontaneous individual experience? What light do the symbols of Kundalini yoga shed on conditions diagnosed as psychotic? Not only were these questions important to analysts in the 1930s but, as Shamdasani stresses, they continue to have psychological relevance for readers on the threshold of the twenty-first century. This volume also offers newly translated material from Jung's German language seminars, a seminar by the indologist Wilhelm Hauer presented in conjunction with that of Jung, illustrations of the cakras, and Sir John Woodroffe's classic translation of the tantric text, the Sat-cakra Nirupana.

Editorial Review:

Author, psychologist, and astrologer Monika Wikman has worked for decades with clients and their dream symbols and witnessed the presence of the divine hand at work in the psyche. In The Pregnant Darkness, Wikman shows readers that the best way to cope with their darkest hours is by fostering a connection to the deeper current of life, those mysteries that give life form and meaning. Wikman’s analysis of dream material leads readers into a practical explanation of alchemical symbolism. Far from being a quaint, ancient practice, The Pregnant Darkness shows that alchemy is at work in contemporary, everyday life. Alchemical symbolism, properly understood, can be applied to unraveling the meaning of visions in meditation, active imagination, and dream work. Wikman shows how readers can participate in the divine energies to help miraculous changes occur in their lives.

Wikman writes: "In Greek mythology, Pegasus, upon taking to the air, pushed hard with a back hoof and penetrated the earth. A spring rose up where his hoof dashed the earth, and in this hole . . . the muses reside. One of the roles of the ‘religious function’ of which Jung speaks is to bring us toward that inner spring of the muses where something beyond ego resides, instructs, and inspires. Like a hole created from Pegasus’ leaping foot, contact with this inner spring often entails a crack in our field of ordinary consciousness. In the inner world, the spring of living symbols and accompanying presences is the source of dreams and visions, as well as the fountain of inspiration at the heart of poetry, art, ritual, mythology, and even religion."

Deep, Poignant, Insightful and meaningful 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 37 people found this review helpful.

I tend to get attracted by a sort of synchronicity or intuitive feeling to certain books that resonate with the current process of what I call my spiritual journey. This book is one of those I would cherish and remember, and refer to, and meditate upon it. It is not only writen by someone deeply in touch with psychological understanding but also by a person inmersed consciously on her spiritual path, or inner journey towards enlightnement or liberation or full awakening of consciousness as you wish to name this subtile and many times confusing path.
Marion Woodman had a sort of blockage on her path of writing this book and she finally realized that she was feeling somewhow affraid of not being able to unite her writing with feeling and her writing with psychological knowledge and insight. But she does a wonderful work by not only helping us with her deep understanding of the Psyche and its own language, but also, by opening her own heart and her own wounds to all of us, like she does in poignant chapter 7.
This book has helped me find and recognise more subtile layers of aspects of myself that needed to be aknowledged and liberated. Althought we sometimes seem to have accomplished major inner work, there's many times subtilities left that are blocking the way to integrity, wholeness, hapiness. This book came when I was uncovering unconscious aspects of my mother and my father's own wounds and how I had absorbed them as baby and child, integrating them in myself in a confusing mixture that didn't allow me to heal it because I couldnt find their root and thus I didn't understand their effect on me.
This whole summer's been an intense trip to the Underworld and books that also helped me where: The Dark Moon Goddess by Demetra George and Clarissa Pinkola Estés,Women Who Run With Wolves. Also, Anatomy of the Psyche by Edward Edinger since it explains the alchemical operations in terms of psychological processes and for some reason or other, I do resonate to this language and inner transformation process...

Editorial Review:

" The women who is a virgin, one in herself, does what she does not for power or out of the desire to please, but because what she does is true." Here is writing with a thinking heart, blending art, literature, religion and extensive case material. Continues the author's pioneering work on the feminine in both women and men.

Body, Breath, and Consciousness: A somatics anthology 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

BB&C is one of the only titles in English that covers the emerging modality of Bodynamic developed by Lisbeth Marcher. For those interested in trauma, especially developmental trauma this is a good start to an important therapeutic approach. Other modalities are covered including articles by Peter A. Levine Ph.D. developer of Somatic Experiencing.

Editorial Review:

The forces that develop the self - somatic, emotional, mental, interpersonal, social, and spiritual - must all be considered by therapists in treating any patient. Each article in this important anthology deals in some way with these various elements. The writing is focused on the body-mind connection, exploring the practices and theories of this popular branch of psychology. Topics include the significance of family systems; dealing with trauma and shock in therapy; and the importance of breathing, offering valuable insights for the student and practitioner alike. Contributors include Marianne Bentzen, a trainer in Somatic Developmental Psychology; Peter Bernhardt, a professor of psychology; and Peter A. Levine, author of Waking the Tiger.

Parents of young children (ages 18 months to 5 years) with a diagnosis of autism, face the critical decision of which educational treatment program to choose for their child. To help guide them through this complex decision-making process, parents can turn to the revised and updated edition of RIGHT FROM THE START, which covers programs that use Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, a highly effective treatment based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). New information includes the latest research on the benefits of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, the types of instruction used (naturalistic instruction and other teaching methods that complement ABA), home-based professionals and their credentials, school-based programs, and more. An Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention program consists of concentrated instruction (at least 40 hours a week) and can be based in the child's home, at a center (private or university), or more recently, in public schools. Besides the setting, there are many other variables to consider when evaluating a program, and RIGHT FROM THE START thoroughly explores those, including: age of the child; access to typically developing peers; curriculum; teaching strategies; team member credentials; time demands; family finances; home support services; supervision and accountability; behavior management; control over the child's education; visual and auditory distractions; availability of multidisciplinary team. Many preschoolers who receive Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention make good progress and may go on to be included with their typically developing peers in elementary school. Comprehensive in its coverage and full of personal insight, RIGHT FROM THE START is an essential primer to help families explore the options and select the educational treatment program that best suits them and their child's needs. The many professionals who work closely with these families can also benefit from reading

First off let me just say... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

First off let me just say I was raised a Catholic and now consider myself a follower in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

My belief system is in agreement with Carl Jung theory of synchronicity. Applying his theory to the cards I believe every card pulled no matter from what deck and along with your mindful question, you will receive an answer especially for you.

I would not say say these are evil cards or evil in anyway, against God or my personal belief system. Do a google search for more info on Carl Jung.

I am relatively new to Tarot Cards, but from my short studies I find the traditional tarot a bit stuffy.

As a natural intuitive and a total picture person verses a being a word person. I am unable to verbalize my inner emotions. I find the Sacred Circle Tarot Cards to be very accurate, helping to looking inward and then verbalize my inner most feelings, seeing inside myself as I am and able to verbalize for me my emotions is what I like most about these cards. I also find it helps me to rid anger because of the inability to express my inner truth.

The Cards-You really have to look at the cards for more meaning to what is obvious. There is more.

Example 5 of Discs - Reversed- Restriction-Discs relate to fiances. You see 5 discs with branches across them. Meaning yes financial restriction but do not let fiances be who you are, seek self worth from true values, my short synopsis.

Now as a student of the metaphysical and mediation and manifestation.
How I interpret this....ok there has been a lack, through meditation have an angel remove the branches one by one and throw into a burning fire wood pile. Once done give thanks. Now see the angel wrapping gold threads around the disks and give thanks for abundance.

I was first attracted to the cards because I love the digitalized art style. I am not a pagan nor up on my Celtic history, not a problem, I also like the little catch phases.

If you want to get accurate readings, willing to look inward, think on things a bit, a beginner, not stuck in traditional tarot or just love the art work try these cards. I enjoy them greatly and after studying many traditional and not so traditional decks these are by far my favorite.

Next purchases for me.. Animal Tarot(animal speaks), Bohemian Tarot (goth), Gilded Tarot, Prague Tarot and I do like The Fairy Ring Tarot again accurate readings, and the digital computer imagery.

Editorial Review:

The Sacred Circle Tarot is a new concept in tarot design, combining photographs, computer imaging and traditional drawing techniques to create stunning images. It draws on the Pagan heritage of Britain and Ireland, its sacred sites and landscapes. Key symbols unlock the deepest levels of Pagan teaching. The imagery of the cards is designed to work on a number of levels, serving as a tool not only for divination but to facilitate meditation, personal growth and spiritual development.
