I started using art projection when I was a psychologist for a child adolescent unit in a state hospital. A good way to engage angry or depressed children without threat is to ask them to draw something, unless they have poor perceptual motor skills. But getting them to draw will tell you something about that right away. It is important to know what to expect in average drawing skills and this book helps with that. It also gives a place to start with children who have difficulty with verbal expression. This is not the Be All- End All text but it is worthy of being a companion to other art evaluation tools. It is for the subjective anecdotal information to supplement the more objective tools.

Kinetic House-Tree-Person Drawings or K-H-T-P by Robert C. Burns of the Seattle Institute of Human Development, is an easy to use and understand interpretative manual for this popular, though still controversial, assessment technique.

Dr. Burn's theory for adding the Kinetic action-to-purpose element to the existing classical model, argues that action in the exercise and symbiosis of the projective components, interplay in creating a dynamic that can yield much more patient information than the standard traditional technique and paradigm.

Dr. Burns demonstrates his point by comparing and contrasting results from several classical model assessments of projective drawings with a kinetic model and interpretation. K-H-T-P is well written and organized providing rich examples of real illustrations for practice and reflection. It is an excellent tool and reference guide for all serious advanced students of psychology and for which assessment will be an important part of their practice.

For the serious student of projective techniques, I would recommend not to focus to much on the illustrations until you have read the concept and assessment techniques provided within and then take a turn at assessment and compare your effort with Dr. Burns final conclusions.

This work is a landmark both in psychology--the beginning of Jung's revelation of the Collective Unconscious resulting in his break with Freud--& his own quest for individuation. In his own words: p. 304: "It is not possible to live too long amid infantile surroundings, or in the bosom of the family, without endangering one's psychic health. Life calls us forth to independence, and anyone who does not heed this call because of childish laziness or timidity is threatened with neurosis." Furthermore, he states that (despite many modern Jungians emphasizing his Thinking nature), p. 109: "All passion is a challenge to fate" & p. 110: "Anyone who refuses to experience life must stifle his desire to live--in other words, he must commit partial suicide. This explains the death fantasies that usually accompany the renunciation of desire." Needless to say, the break with Freud was extremely traumatic for Jung--yet it led to his own individuation (see his biography, "Memories, Dreams, Reflections"). Of course, in Jung's era it was not uncommon for the erudite to intersperse their writings with poetic allusions, French & Latin phrases, etc. which make such works exceedingly trying for modern readers. Still, this is a breakthrough book. I'd suggest reading his immediate disciples' works first as well as "Man & His Symbols" which was written at the end of Jung's life (with some of his primary students) for a general vs. technical audience. Books are also available by Marie-Louise von Franz, Barbara Hanna, Jolande Jacobi, as well as Emma Jung. Some interesting observations in this work: p. 181: "Children cannot distinguish their own instincts from the influence and will of their parents" & p. 303: (quoting Gerhart Hauptmann via W. Stekel)--"Poetry is the art of letting the primordial word resound through the common word."

Consciousness discussed by an incredibly aware teacher..helps us know ourselves and one another 5 out of 5 stars.

I am positively biased towards this book as I have had the good fortune
of having a deep conversation with the author by telephone. I found him
to be one of the most brilliant and aware individuals I've ever met.
Reading the book helps me understand more intimately and profoundly
the breadth and depth of his keen and observant mind.
Its truly wonderful to read something that helps you understand others and yourself from the point of view of " sitting in the lap of the
giant"....He makes complex and profound insights accessible and
useable. This in itself is a worthy gift and would be reason enough to
read the book.
But there are also wonderful stories and anecdotes, thoughtfully
chosen and sparely shared, that illustrate, like parables, concepts that
we can all benefit from.
Even if you're not a scholar (and I'm not), nor an educator, nor
a master of anything, but just curious to want to know more about the
mind, consciousness in particular---and how to understand and value it
more....this book will surely be worthy of your time and hold a special
place on your stack of "Top Favorites in My Library."
Highly Recommended. Its unique and lacks self-consciousness. Wise
and comfortable, approachable and readible...you'll be so glad you took
the time to open and learn.
Like myself, you may emerge somewhat changed. I suspect that could
be a good thing!
I have been studying consciousness for about 30 years but from
a polar opposite viewpoint. It was refreshing to see places we meet in the
middle, but especially fascinating to learn ideas I'd never considered at all. Thanks Chris Bache for taking the time to learn, understand, experience and discern, and then ultimately write clearly about all the things in this rare and special book!

A poorly organized book about a fascinating topic 2 out of 5 stars.

Psychology and Alchemy has a lot of interesting information, but it is not presented in any sort of organized fashion. Alchemy is well known for its perplexing symbols, but in the book these symbols are only referred to in passing. This book is not for anyone who is trying to understand how the symbolism of Alchemy relates to psychology. The descriptions of basic elements such as the planets, the caduceus, or birds are only 1-2 sentences in length and are scattered throughout the book. Trying to use the index won't help either, as the pages listed in the index as containing information about a topic are often incorrect as they contain no mention of the topic being looked up.

Jung has an exciting, compelling account of how to interpret alchemy in the light of his psychology, but is wrong when he tries to reduce alchemy to Jungian Psychology. for a good treatment of the problems with Jung's view, which is rooted in bad 19th century occult interpretations of alchemy, see

This is one of Jung's finest although it makes some demands on the cerebral capacity of the reader. Its main benefit is that the Jungian notions here comes out in their full theoretical depth. It's imperative, namely, to get a thorough and deep understanding of Jungian psychology, otherwise you haven't understood it at all. Jungian psychology is plagued by this problem that the notions are shallowly understood. Not even the very central concept of the archetype is rightly understood in many quarters. But here Jung takes us to the deepest layers of his thinking. The archetype is described as a living complex within the psyche of the individual, as a reasonably autonomous personality with a certain conscious luminosity of its own. This goes for the god-complex, too, although, Jung underlines, this doesn't disprove the existence of a transcendental God. This book handles many important questions and constitutes in fact a survey of Jungian psychology: personal and collective unconscious, anima and animus, transcendental function, etc. As this book is Jungian psychology in a nutshell it could be recommended as introductory, provided that the reader is theoretically adept. In fact, I really recommend taking on this book early when studying Jung in order to avoid shallow miscomprehensions of his psychology. However, as the book thoroughly treats questions concerning the encounter with the unconscious, such as phenomena arising from the assimilation of the unconscious, it is very much directed towards professionals. This book will satisfy the appetite of any person with a theoretical disposition. /Mats W
