Very Good overview 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I am trying to learn more about transpersonal psychology and transpersonal practices. This book more than did the trick. It gave a good overview of the different angles the field touches. It gave great anectdotal stories as well. It is defineity a must have. It introduced many of the fathers of the field and there perspectives; Jung, Maslow, Wilber, Freud, Assogolini. It also showed the contributions of spirtiual traditions:Buddhism, Hinduism, Shamanism, Christianity, Kabbalah. It introduced many techniques used:guided imagery, past life regression, meditation, breathwork, psychedelics.

Editorial Review:

This important new book brings together the work of top scholars and clinicians at leading universities and medical centers on the benefits and risks of transpersonal therapy. After comparing a variety of multicultural approaches—Zen Buddhism, existential phenomenology, and Christian mysticism, among many others—the book offers a wealth of information on specific disorders and the application of transpersonal psychology techniques such as visualization, breathwork, and “past lives” regression. With solid scholarship, wide scope, and accessible style, Textbook of Transpersonal Psychiatry and Psychology will become the standard work for students, researchers, clinicians, and lay readers interested in extending psychiatry and psychology into sciences that describe the functioning of the human mind, thereby building bridges between those disciplines and spirituality.

short but filled with clever info 4 out of 5 stars.

Jung tries his hand at a psychological interpretation of ancient and contemporary art and culture; several interesting studies here as well as more info about what Jung means by "spirit."

Read for completeness--not his best 3 out of 5 stars.

Art & literature provided Jung with data with which to correlate his model of the psyche. Furthermore, they provided the means for his presentation of profound observations of human nature & behavior. This is not my favorite volume of the collected works, but it is interesting. Read volume 18, The Symbolic Life for more information/observations on these topics. My favorite quotes in this book are:

p. 4 Nothing exerts a stronger psychic effect upon the human environment, and especially upon children, than the life which the parents have not lived.

p. 14 (quoting Paracelsus): `His motto is said to have been alterius non sit, qi suus esse potert (Let him not be another's who can be his own).'

p. 47 Doubt alone is the mother of scientific truth.

p. 60 Human instinct knows that all great truth is simple.

Editorial Review:

Nine essays, written between 1922 and 1941, on Paracelsus, Freud, Picasso, the sinologist Richard Wilhelm, Joyce's Ulysses, artistic creativity generally, and the source of artistic creativity in archetypal structures.

good case for mutual support, but gradualist oriented 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Soto Zen teacher/psychoanalyst Magid compares Soto Zen with Freudian, Self, Object Relations, & Intersubjectivity psychologies. His thesis is that p. 8: "documented case after case of experienced meditators whose core conflicts & deficits have not only been inadequately addressed through their practice, but for whom meditation itself served to reinforce defensive patterns" which have led to a number of scandals for Zen leaders due to "Zen transference" & that Zen & psychotherapy can be mutually supportive/beneficial. He is very oriented towards gradualism: Soto vs. Rinzai Zen, pro-bottom up vs. top-down approach, & thinks peak experiences are chimeras-despite Richard Bucke's famous book, "Cosmic Consciousness" which describes how such experiences have markedly changed numerous people's lives. His view seems Extroverted (object relations, intersubjectivity, etc.) & Sensate (bottom-up/gradualist). He does provide nice concise descriptions of Self Psychology etc. but makes no attempt to integrate them into extant models (e.g. Jung). His Intersubjectivity appears to be an interpretation of Knowledge Management social network analysis using Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. The book has interesting explications of Zen koans & astute observations on important, often misunderstood, Buddhist doctrines: p. 95: quoting Aitkin Roshi--"The self is still present-but it is not self-preoccupied," p. 141: "Suzuki Roshi once said that detachment doesn't mean giving up the things of the world, but accepting that they go away," & p. 142: "Detachment means non-self-centered responsiveness to a situation...all detachment precludes is increasing the suffering of others in order to minimize your own." However, he seems to think p. 58: emptiness is perfection & Buddhahood is emptiness. He virtually ignores Buddha nature, stating that: p. 162: "It is only through the skillful use of forms, discipline, & the relationship that liberating change can occur. This is as true for psychoanalysis as it is for Zen." IMHO, this is not true for everyone--e.g. people have differing personality types per the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Thus, "doing by being" is comparable to "being by doing" & possibly more efficient. The moral is not to run slowly, it's to pay attention--the hare lost to the tortoise because he wasn't mindful. I'd recommend reading John Suler's "Psychoanalysis and Eastern Thought" which I prefer over this book.

Editorial Review:

In his engaging, accessible, and often witty style, psychiatrist and Zen teacher Barry Magid helps us to understand challenging Zen ideas — oneness, emptiness, no-self, and enlightenment — and explores how they make sense within Western psychotherapeutic conceptions of mind. Magid examines how to best learn from these two systems of thought that address the problems of the human mind and of human suffering and shows that Zen practice, especially when united with the dynamic insights of psychoanalysis, offers a transformation that allows everything to be just as it is. Ordinary Mind gives an account of Zen practice and the search for meaning informed by the psychoanalytic theories of self psychology and intersubjectivity, zooms in on potential opportunities and pitfalls, and brings the reader to a clearer understanding of the path toward personal realization and fulfillment.

A Very Positive Reference Book on Medical Astrology 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

As a trainee astrologer, I have long resisted reading anything about medical astrology in case it scared me too much! This is a great first book to read on the subject and makes you re-think your views on health and ill-health. It is a very readable, comprehensive reference book for someone with some prior knowledge of the basics of astrology, for example the planets, houses and aspects as well as the signs of the zodiac. The reference material is superb and I found that the correspondences between my medical history and the main features of my birth chart were spookily accurate.
The author describes the main function of medical astrology as the identification of the underlying astro-dynamic patterns that link mind and body, and the tackling of the inherent issues of which the outer symptoms are a physical manifestation.
There is a fascinating section on Decumbiture Charts, a traditional method of diagnosis & therapy based on the time a person takes to their bed with an illness. Also, the book contains much practical guidance on therapy sessions using medical astrology. There is no attempt to replace the medical team but rather to complement them. The author describes how the process works - changing the relationship between ourselves and our more difficult features through awareness and what she describes as an "upgrading" - transforming these into new more positive ways of expression that bring healing.
The astrological correspondences of illnesses and remedies including herbs, plus a full bibliography of further reading ensure that this will be a much used reference book.

Editorial Review:

A classic and comprehensive work on both traditional and modern psychosomatic medical astrology, describing the meanings of the planets, aspects, signs houses and degree areas. It includes a step-by-step guide to decumbiture charts and astro-medical consultations, complete with possible remedies.

A penetrating examination of the man and his ideas 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This wonderfully illustrated, spiritual biography of one of psychology's most original thinkers will be welcomed with enthusiasm by Jungian scholars and students. This penetrating examination of the man and his ideas which helped revolutionize psychology and our understanding of the mind is multidimensional and highly recommended.

Beautiful, thoughtful, and engaging 5 out of 5 stars.

I just finished reading Claire Dunne's portrait of Carl Jung and wanted to share what a powerful and inspiring work this is. Ms. Dunne did a wonderful job of telling the story of Jung's evolving and awakening soul as he lived his life fully as a real individual with great gifts and real shortcomings. The book really reflects both the real earthiness of Jung "the peasant" and the highest and deepest explorations of Jung the genius and truthseeker. More than anything else, it seems to me, that you cannot be in the presence of Carl Jung (either in person or through the skillful help of this author) without feeling, as the poet Helena Henderson is quoted in the book, "Above all I remember someone who, by his every word and action, gave one the feeling that life is a good thing--something even more precious to me than anything he put on paper." (p. 109) The book has really blessed me, and it will be one I turn to again and again. I hope others enjoy it as much as I have.

Editorial Review:

A spiritual biography of one of the most important figures of the twentieth century, a man whose ideas revolutionized modern psychology. Through over 150 full color and black and white illustrations, including rare photographs and never-before-seen artwork by Jung himself, his life and work comes vividly to life. By combining Jung’s voice with the impressions of his contemporaries, author Claire Dunne gives the reader a multi-dimensional view of this complex genius. A book that will deepen and expand the understanding of both novice and expert.

Jung on Jungian Psychology 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is Volume 16 of the Collected Works of Carl Jung (1875-1961), "The Practice of Psychotherapy". The first half of the volume is a collection of essays in which Jung explains his views about the interaction of a therapist and a patient. Two themes are striking. First, Jung insists that therapy is a mutual interaction, not something the therapist "does" to the patient: "the therapist is no longer the agent of treatment but a fellow participant in a process of individual development" (p. 8). Secondly, Jung is iconoclastic and utterly unsystematic: for him, the process of growth and healing is a process of individuation, so what is needed for healing at each step of the psychotherapeutic process will be unique to the individuals involved. Jung borrows ideas from Freud, such as dream-analysis and transference, but Freud would not even recognize the way Jung uses these terms in this volume. Indeed, the final work, "The Psychology of the Transference" (1946), is one of his late alchemical works; it uses the *Rosarium philosophorum*, a 16th century alchemical text, as the basis for elucidating the spectrum of issues around an individual's relationship with the Unconscious. I suspect this volume would be of particular interest to practicing therapists, because Jung discusses the profound existential issues that are often overlooked in current professional programs in psychology.

Editorial Review:

Essays on aspects of analytical therapy, specifically the transference, abreaction, and dream analysis. Contains an additional essay, "The Realities of Practical Psychotherapy," found among Jung's posthumous papers.

Editorial Review:

A touchstone for understanding how we behave on the job

"This is a stimulating and provocative book in bringing together important ideas from different fields, and, thereby, giving us a whole new slant on 'human nature.'" —Edgar H. Schein, Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus and Senior Lecturer, MIT

In this astonishing, provocative, and solidly researched book, two Harvard Business School professors synthesize 200 years of thought along with the latest research drawn from the biological and social sciences to propose a new theory, a unified synthesis of human nature. Paul Lawrence and Nitin Nohria have studied the way people behave in that most fascinating arena of human behavior—the workplace—and from their work they produce a book that examines the four separate and distinct emotive drives that guide human behavior and influence the choices people make: the drives to acquire, bond, learn, and defend. They ultimately show that, just as advances in information technology have spurred the New Economy in the last quarter of the twentieth century, current advances in biology will be the key to understanding humans and organizations in the new millennium.
