Editorial Review:

Of the various types of mythological literature, fairy tales are the simplest and purest expressions of the collective unconscious and thus offer the clearest understanding of the basic patterns of the human psyche. Every people or nation has its own way of experiencing this psychic reality, and so a study of the world's fairy tales yields a wealth of insights into the archetypal experiences of humankind. Perhaps the foremost authority on the psychological interpretation of fairy tales is Marie-Louise von Franz. In this book—originally published as An Introduction to the Interpretation of Fairy Tales —she describes the steps involved in analyzing and illustrates them with a variety of European tales, from "Beauty and the Beast" to "The Robber Bridegroom." Dr. von Franz begins with a history of the study of fairy tales and the various theories of interpretation. By way of illustration she presents a detailed examination of a simple Grimm's tale, "The Three Feathers," followed by a comprehensive discussion of motifs related to Jung's concept of the shadow, the anima, and the animus. This revised edition has been corrected and updated by the author.

comprehensive overview of many types of family therapy 4 out of 5 stars.

bought this for a family therapy class. it's a good reference book, with information on all types of family therapy.

Basic Counseling Textbook 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a textbook for a graduate class in psychology. If you need to buy it as a textbook, then of course, you must buy it. The chapters are arranged in an order that explains the history of family therapy and the basics. It is a general textbook. You will need other books to get into psychotherapy in a deeper way. However, as an introductory text, this is easy reading. It is called an "overview" because that is exactly what it is.
My greatest advice for you is to not forget to use the website as a help to the book. The website backup materials will guarantee you to have a great grade in the course.

Editorial Review:

FAMILY THERAPY provides a balanced presentation of the major theoretical underpinnings and clinical practices in the field. By presenting an overview of traditional and evolving viewpoints, perspectives, values, intervention techniques, and goals of family therapy, Herbert and Irene Goldenberg provide current, relevant, practice-oriented content laying the foundation for students to become proficient family therapists. This edition reflects the Goldenbergs' commitment to providing students with not only traditional family therapy theoretical frameworks, but also the field's evolving models of practice. It is the complete resource for assisting students in mastering the many facets of family therapy. For this new edition, Michael White, founder of Narrative Therapy, has written a new foreword for the text.

One of the best books in this field! 4 out of 5 stars.
112 of 114 people found this review helpful.

The title of this book reveals the premise that Patrick Carnes presents. He tells us that the behaviors of sexual addicts are not actions of love, but of abnormal, compulsive rituals performed in a desparate attempt to self-treat the feelings of despair and anger that has become the fabric of the addict's life. This book is not an introductory volume, it is quite thorough and detailed. The author outlines six phases of sex addiction as well as explaining three levels of behavior. He points out that the different levels of behavior are not necessarily progressive, but the phases of addiction ARE. While this book is designed specifically for those who are care-givers for the sexually addicted, it also gives comfort and insight to the co-addict or codependent involved with the addict. The thoroughness and detail that he writes with may actually be beyond the easy comprehension of many addicts themselves, due to their cloudy comprehension and frequent separations from reality, but I would recommend this book as a challenge and as an invaluable tool for breaking the chains of sexual addiction.

Editorial Review:

written by the national leader on the problem of sexual addiction, contrary to love provides professionals with a resource for understanding and helping sexual addicts. subjects outlined include stages and progression of the illness, family structures, boundaries, assessment, and intervention.

Post-It's have taken over cause I bookmarked too many pages. 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I own and use this book so often in my Art Therapy groups that this book is flooded with Post It notes. I do adapt most of the activity suggestions to make them fit each client population. The book is flexible and could be applied to youth, teen, or adult/senior populations. It is written and indexed in an easy-to-read manner based on the mode of therapy practiced. The suggestions themselves are general enough however do conveniently elaborate with bullet-marked suggestions for different ways to try out the various activities. So if you think you've worked with clay, perhaps you have not written an acoustic poem about it and then created an environment for the sculpture, etc. Several variations and ideas were new and fresh. Great book for the novice or for the seasoned professional who needs some help getting new ideas sparked up and fueled; a quick, easy (and relatively inexpensive) A.T. reference.

In between 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Unlike the first 2 reviews of this book, my opinion falls somewhere in between. While this is not the most comprehensive or profound book on art therapy, it is a practical guide for practitioners who need lots of ideas for group activities. How well they work depends on the skills and insight of the group leader, as well as the readiness of the group participants. One of my art therapy students bought this book recently and found it quite useful. For the more advanced practitioner, it might feel a bit too much like a recipe book. I recommend it as one tool in your art therapy toolbox.

Editorial Review:

Tarot Plain and Simple by Anthony Louis is the book you've been waiting for! As the title indicates, this book presents the Tarot in clear language that anyone can understand. If you've had trouble learning the Tarot, this book gives the meaning of each and every one of the 78 Tarot cards -- both in simple terms and in-depth ones, both upright interpretations and those for when a card is drawn reversed. Illustrations are from the elegant and mystic Robin Wood Tarot.
This book leaves nothing out! It includes an overview of the history of the Tarot and suggests why this divinatory method works from a scientific point of view. It even includes several spreads and example readings. That way you can see exactly how the Tarot works, how the cards play off of each other and how to give a reading.
Turn to any page and see how you can learn meanings and interpretations. The Five of Cups shows a cloaked person with head down and three of five cups knocked over, spilling their contents. Upright the card means "mourning." But the key words and phrases give you so much more. It can also mean regret, sadness, loss of trust, an emotional letdown, betrayal in love, and much more. How can you tell which expression best fits the card? It depends upon where it falls in the spread and the cards that surround or lead up to it. This is explained in the clear but comprehensive section on Tarot card spreads, and is illustrated in the sample readings.
If you have been waiting for an ideal book to help you learn the Tarot, this is it. The longer you wait, the longer it will be before you can give effective Tarot readings. Get out that Tarot deck and get this book today!

Are you an Aspie? 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I find it hard to believe there is only one review for this book! I am an undiagnosed Aspie and I found this book to be beyond belief. OK, I haven't read the whole book and I've started about 5 others on AS. I guess it comes with the territory.

What I am saying is that if you're an Aspie and you want to see how your mind works, in words, right before your eyes then take a look at just the first 50 pages. I've had many professionals (6 - 20) try to help me with very little success, learned of AS about a year ago, and none of them can hold a candle to Valerie. I am awe-struck; she is special!

Editorial Review:

An invaluable resource for therapists, this lucidly written book provides research-based strategies for addressing the core problems of Asperger syndrome (AS) and helping clients manage frequently encountered comorbidities, such as anxiety disorders and depression. Detailed case examples illustrate the complexities of AS and the challenges it presents in daily life, relationships, and the workplace. The author presents a cogent rationale for cognitive-behavioral intervention and offers clear guidelines for conducting assessments and designing and implementing individualized treatment plans. Throughout, the emphasis is on helping people with AS decrease distress while preserving and building on their unique strengths. Special features include a case formulation worksheet and other helpful reproducibles.

Like Perls for Children 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have a thriving passion for experiential work, and Violet shows how it is applicable to child treatment. Dr. Oaklander has a deep respect for and understanding of children. She knows how to use their imaginations (and her own) to help them both heal and develop internal resources. I have included her ideas in my own therapeutic work with children/teens, and also in training clinicians. This is my favorite child therapy book. Her new book is due out in December 2006.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book on using many techniques with children. She incorporates guided imagary and art therapy techniques. I work with children and have utilized many ideas with great success. I do wish she would write another book with even more techniques.

Editorial Review:

With over 300 pages of methods, materials, techniques for working with children and adolescents, transcripts, case examples and discussion, this book more than fills a void in the child therapy literature. Counselors and therapists, in schools, mental health centers and private practice embrace this book. It is the largest selling book on the subject in the world.

"This is the most concise and complete text to date on the rich and complex area of phenomenological research. . . . Dr. Moustakas presents the reader with a historical overview and assessment of phenomenological research methodologies along with a review of the philosophical underpinnings of these methods. He also makes clear distinctions between hermeneutic, empirical phenomenology, and heuristic approaches to human science research. There is a discussion of the methods and procedures that one might employ in conducting a human science research project along with numerous clarifying examples of the research that illustrate specific applications of phenomenological methods. The step-by-step description of this approach to research will prove invaluable for anyone choosing to engage in phenomenological research." --Ken Waldman in Contemporary Psychology Phenomenology has long served as a research model for many psychologists and other social science scholars and professionals. Yet descriptions of how to do phenomenological research are few. In this brief volume, Clark Moustakas clearly explains the theoretical underpinnings of phenomenology, based on the work of Husserl and others, and takes the reader step-by-step through the process of conducting a phenomenological study. His concise guide also provides numerous extended examples of successful phenomenological studies from a variety of fields, including therapy, health care, victimology, psychology, and gender studies. Excellent resource -- a must -buy for your bookshelf 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Finally, a book on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) for the rest of us! Everyone who deals with bipolar disorder will find Basco's work very helpful. I've read many books on CBT, including those by Ellis and his students -- they have great ideas, but they are not so easy to put into practice if you are cycling through the mood swings of manic depression. Basco customizes the CBT approach for bipolar and explains the process clearly. Multiple studies have shown this approach's usefulness. If you and your health care provider prefer a cognitive approach to help manage your bipolar symptoms, this book (now in paperback) is your best resource.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder, this book details an innovative program of interventions that augments rather than replaces pharmacotherapy. Topics covered include patient and family education, early symptom detection for the prevention of relapse, methods for the enhancement of treatment compliance, strategies for the remediation of subsyndromal symptoms of depression and mania, and ways to identify and resolve psychosocial and interpersonal problems. Each chapter provides session-by-session instructions, as well as patient assignments and clear and concise directions for the implementation of each intervention.

Editorial Review:

The goal of an "integral psychology" is to honor and embrace every legitimate aspect of human consciousness under one roof. This book presents one of the first truly integrative models of consciousness, psychology, and therapy. Drawing on hundreds of sources--Eastern and Western, ancient and modern--Wilber creates a psychological model that includes waves of development, streams of development, states of consciousness, and the self, and follows the course of each from subconscious to self-conscious to superconscious. Included in the book are charts correlating over a hundred psychological and spiritual schools from around the world, including Kabbalah, Vedanta, Plotinus, Teresa of Ávila, Aurobindo, Theosophy, and modern theorists such as Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Jane Loevinger, Lawrence Kohlberg, Carol Gilligan, Erich Neumann, and Jean Gebser. Integral Psychology is Wilber's most ambitious psychological system to date, and it is already being called a landmark study in human development.
