The worst possible book to learn about Jung.... 1 out of 5 stars.
23 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Treating someone of the caliber of Jung the way this book does is at best a very bad joke. Carl Jung was not a pop group, hence presenting his theories in a fragmented way by giving us a bit of this and a bit of that in a totally disconnected manner helps noone.
It certainly doesn't do any justice to a mind like the one Jung possesed and it definately won't help any type of reader interested in Jung:

-for those already acquainted with the Jungian theories this book is going to be an utter waste of time. It doesn't help you go any deeper or progress in acquanting yourself with Jung's mindset and in no way does it work as a "reference book" which is what i imagine was the premise of the author who assembled this disastrously bad collection of Jungian essays together. In order for such an endeavour to have any hope for function ti would need to be at least 4 times the volume it has. Why do say that? Well, for starters, the essays presented in this book are so short, so much out of any coherence, and so taken out of context, that even Jung himself would've trouble detecting where they are taken from...

-for those NOT acquainted with Jungian thought, reading this book merely means that they will remain NOT acquanited with Jungian thought. I can't put it in a starker way than this and i feel no need to elaborate on this further. If you want to introduce yourself to the Jungian school of thought DO NOT under any circumstances begin with this book because you're running the risk of actually being turned off alltogether..

Start instead with "Memories, dreams and reflections". That is written by Jung himself, and while it's an excellent presentation to the way Jung approached psychology and psychotherapy, it's at the same time sort of an autobiography as well as a seriously insightful and as influential a book as they come...

Editorial Review:

This volume presents the essentials of Jung's thought in his own words. To familiarize readers with the ideas for which Jung is best known, the British psychiatrist and writer Anthony Storr has selected extracts from Jung's writings that pinpoint his many original contributions and relate the development of his thought to his biography. Dr. Storr has prefaced each extract with explanatory notes. These notes link the extracts, and with Dr. Storr's introduction, they show the progress and coherence of Jung's ideas, including such concepts as the collective unconscious, the archetypes, introversion and extroversion, individuation, and Jung's view of integration as the goal of the development of the personality.

Editorial Review:

The goal of an "integral psychology" is to honor and embrace every legitimate aspect of human consciousness under one roof. This book presents one of the first truly integrative models of consciousness, psychology, and therapy. Drawing on hundreds of sources--Eastern and Western, ancient and modern--Wilber creates a psychological model that includes waves of development, streams of development, states of consciousness, and the self, and follows the course of each from subconscious to self-conscious to superconscious. Included in the book are charts correlating over a hundred psychological and spiritual schools from around the world, including Kabbalah, Vedanta, Plotinus, Teresa of Ávila, Aurobindo, Theosophy, and modern theorists such as Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Jane Loevinger, Lawrence Kohlberg, Carol Gilligan, Erich Neumann, and Jean Gebser. Integral Psychology is Wilber's most ambitious psychological system to date, and it is already being called a landmark study in human development.

One of the best books in this field! 4 out of 5 stars.
113 of 115 people found this review helpful.

The title of this book reveals the premise that Patrick Carnes presents. He tells us that the behaviors of sexual addicts are not actions of love, but of abnormal, compulsive rituals performed in a desparate attempt to self-treat the feelings of despair and anger that has become the fabric of the addict's life. This book is not an introductory volume, it is quite thorough and detailed. The author outlines six phases of sex addiction as well as explaining three levels of behavior. He points out that the different levels of behavior are not necessarily progressive, but the phases of addiction ARE. While this book is designed specifically for those who are care-givers for the sexually addicted, it also gives comfort and insight to the co-addict or codependent involved with the addict. The thoroughness and detail that he writes with may actually be beyond the easy comprehension of many addicts themselves, due to their cloudy comprehension and frequent separations from reality, but I would recommend this book as a challenge and as an invaluable tool for breaking the chains of sexual addiction.

Editorial Review:

written by the national leader on the problem of sexual addiction, contrary to love provides professionals with a resource for understanding and helping sexual addicts. subjects outlined include stages and progression of the illness, family structures, boundaries, assessment, and intervention.

Comprehensive and clear 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This handbook provides a comprehensive look at Cognitive Behavioral therapies and contains a lineup of incredible contributors including Beutler, Beck, Neimeyer, and many more. It includes a hisorical perspective, assessment issues, case formulation, RET, Cognitive therapy, and much more. Definitely a readable and practical book for the introduction of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies.

Editorial Review:

Fully revised and updated, the second edition of this authoritative Handbook reflects the continuing evolution of the field over the last decade. The volume brings together established experts to review the theories, research, and treatment methodologies associated with the major cognitive-behavioral models. Part I describes historical foundations and basic principles. Extensively rewritten chapters cover such topics as assessment strategies and recent developments in the cognitive sciences, and new chapters have been added on case formulation and psychotherapy integration. Part II comprises detailed presentations of specific treatment approaches: cognitive therapy, rational-emotive behavior therapy, self-management approaches, problem-solving therapies, and child and adolescent applications. Chapters on each model combine thorough coverage of theory and research with illuminating clinical vignettes.

This unique text provides a framework for evaluating various Human Behavior theories and a context for addressing social work practice with varying levels of social systems. This revision places current theories of human behavior in a systems context. It is based upon a generalist practice foundation and includes practice examples that help students understand the underlying theory. The text examines the basic concepts in each of the various system sizes: the individual, the social group, the family, the organization, and the community. It includes expanded coverage of spirituality, diversity, values and ethics, social and economic justice/oppression, populations-at-risk, and other areas.

A rich & deep introduction to Jung 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I first read this wonderful book some 30-odd years ago, and I've returned to it many times since. It remains one of the best introductions to Jung's thought & basic concepts that I know. Singer's personal touch, both in her own case histories & her autobiographical anecdotes, add to the book; the feeling is one of listening to a wise woman, rather than hearing a dry lecture. Singer not only knows her material intellectually, she knows it in her soul, and that comes through on every page. This book made me start paying attention to my dreams, and gave me a much-needed framework for understanding my life at a crucial time, when I was most in need of such a framework.

While the revised & updated edition is excellent, I'd also recommend reading the original 1972 edition if you can find it. For example, Singer's chapter on Jung & the Counterculture is superb, and not nearly as dated as the author herself believed; in any case, it provides a valuable on-the-spot account of Jungian thought & its intersection with the 1960s, the impact of which is still being felt today. Yet it's also fascinating to read the follow-up stories of some of her patients in the newer edition.

Jung is a much better known name today than when this book first appeared, but his thought isn't always as well understood as it might be. Let Singer take you on a revelatory tour of the Psyche & learn far more about both Jung & yourself than you ever imagined. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

"Certainly the very best introduction to Jung around."--Joseph Campbell. After 13 printings, this classic is completely revised to encorporate developments over the last two decades--particularly in the areas of gender relations, psychotherapeutic drugs, and the evolution of Jung's concept and personality types. Includes revised case histories.

A fascinating insight into the Bible's message 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the best interpretation of the Scriptures according to Jungian psychoanalysis. It is recommended to everybody who has doubts in the dogmaic Chrisitan way to read the Bible and it is a source for individual wholeness for those who try to find it in the Scriptures.

A must read for fans of Jung Psychology. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After seeing all the positive reviews on here I had to try this book. I can tell you they are all true.

When I first started reading I wasn't too sure considering much of the first chapter I was familiar with. However as to be expected Ego and Archetype proved to be enlightening and inspiring. If at any point you have studied Jung and was interested in the process of Individuation. Or if you are looking for a guide to living a healthy meaningful life this book should help.

While this book could easily be considered a self help book it should be not confused with most books out there. The information in this text makes Ego and Archetype worth more then its mass in gold.

I would like to suggest that before reading this text however (if you are new to Jungian Psychology) to read at least "Man and His Symbols" and if you can "The Undiscovered Self" as well. These will at the least give you a basic understanding of where Edward Edinger is coming from.

A must read for anyone who feels abandoned, thinks they know it all, are a spiritualist, or religious.

I can only wish I had been graced with the knowledge in this text sooner.

Editorial Review:

A study of the journey to psychological wholeness--a process that Jung described as a conscious encounter between the ego and the archetypal symbols of the collective unconscious. For contemporary people, Edinger asserts, this encounter is equivalent to the discovery of God--and a critically important experience for everyone. 68 halftones.

Easy read; comprehensive action methods to control anxiety 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 30 people found this review helpful.

At the time I bought this book, I was unaware of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, had never heard of Dr. Albert Ellis, and wasn't really looking to solve any particular anxiety problem of my own. Always a fan of Dale Carnegie's "How to ..." instructional writings, I figured this would be a new perspective on a popular and important subject. What I learned was that Dr. Ellis has extensive experience (since 1943) in psychotherapy and actually devised REBT in 1955. Like Carnegie, he is quite good at putting his research and wisdom into books (more than sixty), and turning this knowledge into useful information for those who might be trying to solve a problem related to emotion and personality.

To me, the most important part of REBT is "Rational," the exercise of thinking through what is causing anxiety, why your beliefs about it are unfounded (i.e., irrational) and unnecessary, and what you can do to convince yourself that anxiety can be lessened, if not eliminated, through a formulaic rational process. Throughout most of this book, Dr. Ellis clearly describes nearly twenty very specific methods for controlling anxiety. This was all new to me, but I found the methods to make total sense, and imagined that almost all of us could find any number of these helpful in addressing specific anxiety scenarios.

The way in which Dr. Ellis sets forth the varying aspects of REBT is impressive. He's easy to read, and almost grandfatherly in his tone. Each method is portrayed first by explanation, then by documenting a real example using one of his psychotherapy patients. The last three chapters contain 231 "Rational Maxims" which sum up the main points of the methods discussed in detail earlier, and are written in the first person for us to recite when REBT enforcement is needed. Good idea! Some might find this book to be a little repetitive (therapy is like that), and thus may be better off with the abridged version. For someone new to REBT, I'm glad Dr. Ellis presented these methods in a comprehensive manner, and I'll always have the Rational Maxims for review on short order.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Ellis provides readers with scores of thinking, feeling, and action methods for controlling anxiety. The book describes many real cases that Dr. Ellis has treated successfully, including those that deal with performance anxiety, as well as social, job hunting, love, sex, and other forms of anxiety.
