Editorial Review:

The treatment of coexisting chemical dependency and psychiatric disorders has long been a serious challenge for care providers. With the advent of managed care, counselors, case managers, and other professionals increasingly are called upon to treat very ill and troubled clients in outpatient settings. Updated for today's health care climate, the revised and expanded second edition of this popular volume offers a thorough introduction to clinical work with this difficult-to-treat population. Providing a unique synthesis of chemical dependency and mental health models, the book articulates a framework for assessment and treatment and describes a range of effective counseling and motivational strategies for adolescents and adults. Updated to DSM-IV, the second edition includes discussions of the latest developments in treatment, sample treatment plans, increased coverage of ways to incorporate 12-step concepts into mental health interventions, and a new section on trauma-based disorders in addicted female adolescents. As in the first edition, the practical utility of the volume is enhanced by numerous clinical vignettes and clearly presented tables to aid in assessment. Appendices feature helpful reproducible forms.

Big on ambition, poor on delivery 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Given such a low cover price you might think this was a pretty cheap book - until you discover how poor quality it is, information and accuracy-wise.

For example, this is supposed to be an introduction to NLP, yet it makes no mention whatever of a key feature of NLP - the meta programs (mental filters). And whilst the authors do at least mention the meta model - another key concept in NLP - it gets far too little coverage (just 28 pages in a book 354 pages long).

On the subject of accuracy, the authors invent presuppositions that are not merely unknown in mainstream NLP but actual contrary to NLP thinking, such as:

Genuine NLP presupposition - "There is no such thing as failure, only feedback" (using the cybernetics definition of "feedback")

Mindworks pseudo-NLP presupposition - "You can turn failure into feedback"

How do you turn something INTO feedback if it already IS feedback?

The authors appear to be equally at a loss when it comes to simple matters of fact. For example, they baldly state that:

' "The map is not the territory" is an NLP presupposition that's taken from Noam Chomsky'

Oh really? So why does everyone else (correctly) attribute the epigram to Alfred Korzybski, creator of General Semantics?

To cut to the chase, this book is too long-winded, too inaccurate, and too poorly written to be worth even the original cover price.
Definitely NOT recommended.

Editorial Review:

Mindworks breaks open the toolbox of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to show readers how to use what s inside in order to accomplish goals and take control. Among the touchstones of the book:

-You have all of the resources you need -Success is the ability to achieve intended results -You can turn failure into feedback -The map is not the territory -There is a positive intention behind every behavior -There are always more choices

Editorial Review:

This clinically based manual takes readers through the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) which is the basis of a specific form of brief psychodynamic psychotherapy (BPP). The CCRT method is research-supported and easily operationalized. The CCRT method offers symptom relief and limited but significant character change in a strongly interactive 16-session format. It focuses on helping the client to work through the circumscribed area of maladaptive functioning. After presenting general background about BPPs and a specific discussion of the CCRT rationale and process, the author offers the reader a portrait of CCRT therapy in action. In an extended clinical vignette, the reader may follow the therapist and client in a step-by-step manner, from initial session, to therapist formation, articulation and presentation of the CCRT. The volume outlines the 16-session course of therapy including termination and follow-up. This book will be of use to clinicians and directors of postgraduate psychology programmes, mental health training centres, psychiatric residency programmes and to students.

From the Foreword: "This volume is the cutting edge of positive psychology and the emblem of its future."
-Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D., Fox Leadership Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, and author of Authentic Happiness

Positive psychology is an exciting new orientation in the field, going beyond psychology's traditional focus on illness and pathology to look at areas like well-being and fulfillment. While the larger question of optimal human functioning is hardly new - Aristotle addressed it in his treatises on eudaimonia - positive psychology offers a common language on this subject to professionals working in a variety of subdisciplines and practices. Applicable in many settings and relevant for individuals, groups, organizations, communities, and societies, positive psychology is a genuinely integrative approach to professional practice.

Positive Psychology in Practice fills the need for a broad, comprehensive, and state-of-the-art reference for this burgeoning new perspective. Cutting across traditional lines of thinking in psychology, this resource bridges theory, research, and applications to offer valuable information to a wide range of professionals and students in the social and behavioral sciences.

A group of major international contributors covers:

  • The applied positive psychology perspective
  • Historical and philosophical foundations
  • Values and choices in pursuit of the good life
  • Lifestyle practices for health and well-being
  • Methods and processes for teaching and learning
  • Positive psychology at work
The best and most thorough treatment of this cutting-edge discipline, Positive Psychology in Practice is an essential resource for understanding this important new theory and applying its principles to all areas of professional practice.

about time.... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 13 people found this review helpful.

...someone dusted off Marx and took a good psychological look at the wealth in his writings! One needn't be a Marxist (I am not) to appreciate this fine book. My one concern is that Fromm is to Marx as Kaufmann is to Nietzsche: both men either ignore or euphemize the weaknesses in the visionaries they write about (e.g., Kaufmann's remark that Nietzsche's hateful, cynical, and demeaning remarks about women "do him little credit"). Nevertheless, this book provides a good compensation for the Western tendency to demonize a man very much misunderstood by those who turned his writings to political purposes.

Excellent book concerning an understanding of Marx. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is an excellent book for anyone wishing to gain a readable understanding of Marxist thought. The first 92 pages are especially insightful. A must buy for anyone interested in Marxism.

A very good read 5 out of 5 stars.

Fromm's analysis of Marx is incredible, finally someone truly understands Marx's writing. This is an excellent edition for someone looking for a side of Marx not often discussed.

Editorial Review:

A provocative new view of Marx stressing his humanist philosophy and challenging both Soviet distortion and Western ignorance of his basic thinking.

Editorial Review:

Author, psychologist, and astrologer Monika Wikman has worked for decades with clients and their dream symbols and witnessed the presence of the divine hand at work in the psyche. In The Pregnant Darkness, Wikman shows readers that the best way to cope with their darkest hours is by fostering a connection to the deeper current of life, those mysteries that give life form and meaning. Wikman’s analysis of dream material leads readers into a practical explanation of alchemical symbolism. Far from being a quaint, ancient practice, The Pregnant Darkness shows that alchemy is at work in contemporary, everyday life. Alchemical symbolism, properly understood, can be applied to unraveling the meaning of visions in meditation, active imagination, and dream work. Wikman shows how readers can participate in the divine energies to help miraculous changes occur in their lives.

Wikman writes: "In Greek mythology, Pegasus, upon taking to the air, pushed hard with a back hoof and penetrated the earth. A spring rose up where his hoof dashed the earth, and in this hole . . . the muses reside. One of the roles of the ‘religious function’ of which Jung speaks is to bring us toward that inner spring of the muses where something beyond ego resides, instructs, and inspires. Like a hole created from Pegasus’ leaping foot, contact with this inner spring often entails a crack in our field of ordinary consciousness. In the inner world, the spring of living symbols and accompanying presences is the source of dreams and visions, as well as the fountain of inspiration at the heart of poetry, art, ritual, mythology, and even religion."

Body, Breath, and Consciousness: A somatics anthology 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

BB&C is one of the only titles in English that covers the emerging modality of Bodynamic developed by Lisbeth Marcher. For those interested in trauma, especially developmental trauma this is a good start to an important therapeutic approach. Other modalities are covered including articles by Peter A. Levine Ph.D. developer of Somatic Experiencing.

Editorial Review:

The forces that develop the self - somatic, emotional, mental, interpersonal, social, and spiritual - must all be considered by therapists in treating any patient. Each article in this important anthology deals in some way with these various elements. The writing is focused on the body-mind connection, exploring the practices and theories of this popular branch of psychology. Topics include the significance of family systems; dealing with trauma and shock in therapy; and the importance of breathing, offering valuable insights for the student and practitioner alike. Contributors include Marianne Bentzen, a trainer in Somatic Developmental Psychology; Peter Bernhardt, a professor of psychology; and Peter A. Levine, author of Waking the Tiger.

Editorial Review:

Psychology has long been enamored of the dark side of human existence, rarely exploring a more positive view of the mind. What has psychology contributed, for example, to our understanding of the various human virtues? Regrettably, not much. The last decade, however, has witnessed a growing movement to abandon the exclusive focus on the negative. Psychologists from several subdisciplines are now asking an intriguing question: "What strengths does a person employ to deal effectively with life?" The Handbook of Positive Psychology provides a forum for a more positive view of the human condition. In its pages, readers are treated to an analysis of what the foremost experts believe to be the fundamental strengths of humankind. Both seasoned professionals and students just entering the field are eager to grasp the power and vitality of the human spirit as it faces a multitude of life challenges. The Handbook is the first systematic attempt to bring together leading scholars to give voice to the emerging field of positive psychology.

Consciousness discussed by an incredibly aware teacher..helps us know ourselves and one another 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am positively biased towards this book as I have had the good fortune
of having a deep conversation with the author by telephone. I found him
to be one of the most brilliant and aware individuals I've ever met.
Reading the book helps me understand more intimately and profoundly
the breadth and depth of his keen and observant mind.
Its truly wonderful to read something that helps you understand others and yourself from the point of view of " sitting in the lap of the
giant"....He makes complex and profound insights accessible and
useable. This in itself is a worthy gift and would be reason enough to
read the book.
But there are also wonderful stories and anecdotes, thoughtfully
chosen and sparely shared, that illustrate, like parables, concepts that
we can all benefit from.
Even if you're not a scholar (and I'm not), nor an educator, nor
a master of anything, but just curious to want to know more about the
mind, consciousness in particular---and how to understand and value it
more....this book will surely be worthy of your time and hold a special
place on your stack of "Top Favorites in My Library."
Highly Recommended. Its unique and lacks self-consciousness. Wise
and comfortable, approachable and readible...you'll be so glad you took
the time to open and learn.
Like myself, you may emerge somewhat changed. I suspect that could
be a good thing!
I have been studying consciousness for about 30 years but from
a polar opposite viewpoint. It was refreshing to see places we meet in the
middle, but especially fascinating to learn ideas I'd never considered at all. Thanks Chris Bache for taking the time to learn, understand, experience and discern, and then ultimately write clearly about all the things in this rare and special book!

Editorial Review:

Describes the emergence of powerful fields of consciousness that influence students' learning and personal transformation.
