THE Book 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a Borderline reading a book written for the clinician, it opened my eyes as to how others see me. It has helped me to see the areas in my mind that CAN be changed and has helped me to begin making those changes.
It is written by a 'non-writer' and is very difficult to read at times without a psych. manual ;)!! lots of $1000.00 words that are not for the layman, but if you want to know more about 'The Borderline', it will help you to learn who and what they are, and how and why they they think the way they do. For those angels among us,it teaches the greatest program on how to help us to change.

A Godsend 5 out of 5 stars.

I've just started reading the book and have skimmed the workbook. She is, as one reviewer stated, very compassionate. I myself am a borderline individual, recently discovering it as of last week from a caring boyfriend. I went to the library and checked this book out. Never have I been blown away by how this book describes my feelings and pains so accurately. I never, for all these years, understood what was wrong with me, assuming it was everyone else. Ms. Linehan has definately helped my outlook on life. I'm very grateful for this book.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

After years of spiritual study and reflection, inspirational speaker and bestselling author Wayne Dyer has emerged a highly esteemed teacher. His current message about tapping into the power of intention may sound like good old positive thinking: just stay focused on what you want, rather than focusing on the lack of having what you want. But the teaching here goes deeper than just controlling thoughts (although he does acknowledge that thought control is a surprisingly challenging and significant endeavor). This book might help readers land a better job, but it's more relevant for those who are ready to detach from an ego-driven life filled with quick fixes of happiness and step into a more authentic, joyful, and spiritually fulfilling life. His core teachings speak to tapping into a universal source of energy that can also be called the "power of intention." He calls people who are consciously co-creating with this energy source "connectors" and describes them as "individuals who have made themselves available for success...They don't say With my luck things won't work out. Instead, you’re more likely to hear something like, I intend to create this and I know it will work out." Connectors are also committed to Dyer's "seven faces of intention"--creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, abundance and receptivity, which he speaks to throughout the book. Each chapter concludes with five suggestions for becoming stronger connectors, such as how to monitor one's inner speech or shift out of low-energy beliefs. Some criticize Dyer for not giving credit to other teachers who offer this same message, especially Jerry and Esther Hicks (A New Beginning I) and even Ralph Waldo Emerson. It's impossible to know whether this was a deliberate omission, but it is obvious that Dyer has tapped into a growing conversation about co-creating with "source." Other leading-edge voices in this conversation include Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now), Shakti Gawain (Creative Visualization ) and Lynn Grabhorn (Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting). --Gail Hudson

One of the best books in this field! 4 out of 5 stars.
112 of 114 people found this review helpful.

The title of this book reveals the premise that Patrick Carnes presents. He tells us that the behaviors of sexual addicts are not actions of love, but of abnormal, compulsive rituals performed in a desparate attempt to self-treat the feelings of despair and anger that has become the fabric of the addict's life. This book is not an introductory volume, it is quite thorough and detailed. The author outlines six phases of sex addiction as well as explaining three levels of behavior. He points out that the different levels of behavior are not necessarily progressive, but the phases of addiction ARE. While this book is designed specifically for those who are care-givers for the sexually addicted, it also gives comfort and insight to the co-addict or codependent involved with the addict. The thoroughness and detail that he writes with may actually be beyond the easy comprehension of many addicts themselves, due to their cloudy comprehension and frequent separations from reality, but I would recommend this book as a challenge and as an invaluable tool for breaking the chains of sexual addiction.

Editorial Review:

written by the national leader on the problem of sexual addiction, contrary to love provides professionals with a resource for understanding and helping sexual addicts. subjects outlined include stages and progression of the illness, family structures, boundaries, assessment, and intervention.

Are you an Aspie? 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I find it hard to believe there is only one review for this book! I am an undiagnosed Aspie and I found this book to be beyond belief. OK, I haven't read the whole book and I've started about 5 others on AS. I guess it comes with the territory.

What I am saying is that if you're an Aspie and you want to see how your mind works, in words, right before your eyes then take a look at just the first 50 pages. I've had many professionals (6 - 20) try to help me with very little success, learned of AS about a year ago, and none of them can hold a candle to Valerie. I am awe-struck; she is special!

Editorial Review:

An invaluable resource for therapists, this lucidly written book provides research-based strategies for addressing the core problems of Asperger syndrome (AS) and helping clients manage frequently encountered comorbidities, such as anxiety disorders and depression. Detailed case examples illustrate the complexities of AS and the challenges it presents in daily life, relationships, and the workplace. The author presents a cogent rationale for cognitive-behavioral intervention and offers clear guidelines for conducting assessments and designing and implementing individualized treatment plans. Throughout, the emphasis is on helping people with AS decrease distress while preserving and building on their unique strengths. Special features include a case formulation worksheet and other helpful reproducibles.

Editorial Review:

Parents of young children (ages 18 months to 5 years) with a diagnosis of autism, face the critical decision of which educational treatment program to choose for their child. To help guide them through this complex decision-making process, parents can turn to the revised and updated edition of RIGHT FROM THE START, which covers programs that use Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, a highly effective treatment based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). New information includes the latest research on the benefits of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, the types of instruction used (naturalistic instruction and other teaching methods that complement ABA), home-based professionals and their credentials, school-based programs, and more. An Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention program consists of concentrated instruction (at least 40 hours a week) and can be based in the child's home, at a center (private or university), or more recently, in public schools. Besides the setting, there are many other variables to consider when evaluating a program, and RIGHT FROM THE START thoroughly explores those, including: age of the child; access to typically developing peers; curriculum; teaching strategies; team member credentials; time demands; family finances; home support services; supervision and accountability; behavior management; control over the child's education; visual and auditory distractions; availability of multidisciplinary team. Many preschoolers who receive Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention make good progress and may go on to be included with their typically developing peers in elementary school. Comprehensive in its coverage and full of personal insight, RIGHT FROM THE START is an essential primer to help families explore the options and select the educational treatment program that best suits them and their child's needs. The many professionals who work closely with these families can also benefit from reading

Detailed, comprehensive resource on group therapy 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It took just two days to read this gem of a book on the application of cognitive-behavioral and process group expertise to maximize outcomes of cognitive-behavioral group therapy. The authors not only present detailed updates on the CBT and process group literature, but also offer comprehensive outlines of previously tested protocols for group therapy of many common DSM-IV disorders. By offering a readable and comprehensive account of the relevant literature on group therapy and CBT, the authors also ignited a better understanding of further research needs.

Editorial Review:

An authoritative guide for practitioners, this book offers clear advice on how to structure and lead cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) groups and overcome common challenges that arise. Specific, evidence-based group assessment and treatment protocols are provided for a range of frequently encountered disorders. Emphasizing that a CBT group is more than the sum of its individual members, the authors show how to understand and use group process to optimize outcomes. Up to date, accessible, and highly practical, the book is filled with session outlines, sample dialogues, checklists, troubleshooting tips, and other user-friendly features.

An excellent breakdown of cognitive techniques 5 out of 5 stars.
54 of 54 people found this review helpful.

McMullin does an excellent job of taking a fluid process such as therapy and breaking it down into its component parts. McMullin demystifies therapy by breaking the techniques down they are more easily applied in practice. For each technique there are real life examples and application, research and his personal thoughts on the effectiveness of the technique. McMullin also refuses to get lost in the technique and also describes the mechanism of faulty automatic thoughts in excellent detail. This book is designed for especially for professionals, students, but might also be useful to someone who is actively involved in psychology as a client or significant other to someone in therapy. After having read this book I felt much more confident that I would be able to handle situations in my private practice.

Editorial Review:

For therapists with a good grounding in the approach, Hawaii-based clinical psychologist McMullin describes, explains, and demonstrates over 100 techniques of cognitive therapy. For each he provides the theoretical basis, a thumbnail description, case examples, and resources for further information. He here adds seven new chapters to his 1986 Handbook of Cognitive Therapy Techniques that explain how to teach basic concepts, uncover harmful schemas, and resynthesize historical and cultural beliefs.

Editorial Review:

Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is among the most common (and debilitating) of the anxiety disorders, and at any given time it effects somewhere between 3 and 5% of the US population, with similar statistics found in countries around the world. Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been demonstrated to be the most effective form of treatment for social phobia, but research has shown that conventional CBT principles and general interventions fall short of the mark. With this in mind, Drs. Hofmann and Otto have composed an organized treatment approach that includes specifically designed interventions to strengthen the relevant CBT strategies. This volume builds upon empirical research to address the psychopathology and heterogeneity of social phobia, creating a series of specific interventions with numerous case examples.

Editorial Review:

For more than two decades, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy has brought new meaning —and new meaningfulness—to client/therapist relationships. And clients with disorders as varied as depression, PTSD, and fibromyalgia have benefited from its nuanced, curative power. In A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, originators Robert Kohlenberg and Mavis Tsai join with other FAP practitioners to present a clinical framework, addressing points of convergence and divergence with other behavior therapies. Tracing FAP’s emerging evidence base, it takes readers through the deep complexities and possibilities of the therapeutic bond. And the attention to mindfulness and the self makes maximum clinical use of the uniqueness of every client—and every therapist.

Highlights of the Guide:

  • The five core principles of therapeutic technique.
  • Empirical basis of FAP alone or in combination with other therapies
  • Case studies and transcripts of assessment procedures and therapy sessions.
  • Demonstration of the course of FAP, from the initial session to the end of therapy.
  • Therapist self-development and supervision issues.
  • Inspiring clients to help the larger society: the practice of "green FAP."
  • Appendix of questionnaires, feedback forms, and other essential FAP tools.

As this transformative therapy continues to grow in influence, A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy will be a vital, practice-enhancing reference for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and graduate-level students in their training.
