One of the best books in this field! 4 out of 5 stars.

The title of this book reveals the premise that Patrick Carnes presents. He tells us that the behaviors of sexual addicts are not actions of love, but of abnormal, compulsive rituals performed in a desparate attempt to self-treat the feelings of despair and anger that has become the fabric of the addict's life. This book is not an introductory volume, it is quite thorough and detailed. The author outlines six phases of sex addiction as well as explaining three levels of behavior. He points out that the different levels of behavior are not necessarily progressive, but the phases of addiction ARE. While this book is designed specifically for those who are care-givers for the sexually addicted, it also gives comfort and insight to the co-addict or codependent involved with the addict. The thoroughness and detail that he writes with may actually be beyond the easy comprehension of many addicts themselves, due to their cloudy comprehension and frequent separations from reality, but I would recommend this book as a challenge and as an invaluable tool for breaking the chains of sexual addiction.

Editorial Review:

written by the national leader on the problem of sexual addiction, contrary to love provides professionals with a resource for understanding and helping sexual addicts. subjects outlined include stages and progression of the illness, family structures, boundaries, assessment, and intervention.

Fully revised and updated, the second edition of this authoritative Handbook reflects the continuing evolution of the field over the last decade. The volume brings together established experts to review the theories, research, and treatment methodologies associated with the major cognitive-behavioral models. Extensively rewritten chapters cover such topics as assessment strategies and recent developments in the cognitive sciences, and new chapters have been added on case formulation and psychotherapy integration. Part II comprises detailed presentations of specific treatment approaches: cognitive therapy, rational-emotive behavior therapy, self-management approaches, problem-solving therapies, and child and adolescent applications. Chapters on each model combine thorough coverage of theory and research with illuminating clinical vignettes.

Detailed, comprehensive resource on group therapy 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It took just two days to read this gem of a book on the application of cognitive-behavioral and process group expertise to maximize outcomes of cognitive-behavioral group therapy. The authors not only present detailed updates on the CBT and process group literature, but also offer comprehensive outlines of previously tested protocols for group therapy of many common DSM-IV disorders. By offering a readable and comprehensive account of the relevant literature on group therapy and CBT, the authors also ignited a better understanding of further research needs.

Editorial Review:

An authoritative guide for practitioners, this book offers clear advice on how to structure and lead cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) groups and overcome common challenges that arise. Specific, evidence-based group assessment and treatment protocols are provided for a range of frequently encountered disorders. Emphasizing that a CBT group is more than the sum of its individual members, the authors show how to understand and use group process to optimize outcomes. Up to date, accessible, and highly practical, the book is filled with session outlines, sample dialogues, checklists, troubleshooting tips, and other user-friendly features.

Editorial Review:

Parents of young children (ages 18 months to 5 years) with a diagnosis of autism, face the critical decision of which educational treatment program to choose for their child. To help guide them through this complex decision-making process, parents can turn to the revised and updated edition of RIGHT FROM THE START, which covers programs that use Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, a highly effective treatment based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). New information includes the latest research on the benefits of Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention, the types of instruction used (naturalistic instruction and other teaching methods that complement ABA), home-based professionals and their credentials, school-based programs, and more. An Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention program consists of concentrated instruction (at least 40 hours a week) and can be based in the child's home, at a center (private or university), or more recently, in public schools. Besides the setting, there are many other variables to consider when evaluating a program, and RIGHT FROM THE START thoroughly explores those, including: age of the child; access to typically developing peers; curriculum; teaching strategies; team member credentials; time demands; family finances; home support services; supervision and accountability; behavior management; control over the child's education; visual and auditory distractions; availability of multidisciplinary team. Many preschoolers who receive Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention make good progress and may go on to be included with their typically developing peers in elementary school. Comprehensive in its coverage and full of personal insight, RIGHT FROM THE START is an essential primer to help families explore the options and select the educational treatment program that best suits them and their child's needs. The many professionals who work closely with these families can also benefit from reading

Editorial Review:

For more than two decades, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy has brought new meaning —and new meaningfulness—to client/therapist relationships. And clients with disorders as varied as depression, PTSD, and fibromyalgia have benefited from its nuanced, curative power. In A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, originators Robert Kohlenberg and Mavis Tsai join with other FAP practitioners to present a clinical framework, addressing points of convergence and divergence with other behavior therapies. Tracing FAP’s emerging evidence base, it takes readers through the deep complexities and possibilities of the therapeutic bond. And the attention to mindfulness and the self makes maximum clinical use of the uniqueness of every client—and every therapist.

Highlights of the Guide:

  • The five core principles of therapeutic technique.
  • Empirical basis of FAP alone or in combination with other therapies
  • Case studies and transcripts of assessment procedures and therapy sessions.
  • Demonstration of the course of FAP, from the initial session to the end of therapy.
  • Therapist self-development and supervision issues.
  • Inspiring clients to help the larger society: the practice of "green FAP."
  • Appendix of questionnaires, feedback forms, and other essential FAP tools.

As this transformative therapy continues to grow in influence, A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy will be a vital, practice-enhancing reference for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and graduate-level students in their training.

A significant contribution to the field of psychology. 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

Albert Bandura explores the self-system throughout lifespan. Self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy help people to adjust to realities of each life's stage, from early childhood till aging and preparation to death.
Perceived self-efficacy refers to beliefs in one's capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given attainments.
I have found this book very helpful and well structured. Bandura gives a broad hint to the reader, and offers answers to some of the most important and advanced issues that each of us encounters during life. The book stimulates a better awareness of humans' potentials, and encourages to rivisit our constructs.
Bandura's study on self-efficacy is supported by the citation of 47 pages of references. It is highly consistent and fascinating; and this book is an outstanding tool for improving our quality of life.

Editorial Review:

This volume is the result of over 20 years of psychological research by the author. It argues that those with high self-efficacy expectancies (the belief that one can achieve what one sets out to achieve) are healthier, more effective, and generally more successful than those with low self-efficacy expectancies. After a discussion of what self-efficacy is and where it comes from, the text discusses how belief in one's abilities affects developmental, mental functioning, and health; as well as its applications to the areas of psychopathology, athletics, business, and international issues.

Editorial Review:

Since the initial publication of this classic text, motivational interviewing (MI) has been used by countless clinicians in diverse settings. Theory and methods have evolved apace, reflecting new knowledge on the process of behavior change, a growing body of outcome research, and the development of new applications within and beyond the addictions field. Including 25 nearly all-new chapters, this revised and expanded second edition now brings MI practitioners and trainees fully up to date. William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick explain how to work through ambivalence to facilitate change, present detailed guidelines for using their approach with a variety of clinical populations, and reflect on the process of learning MI. Chapters contributed by other leading experts then address such special topics as MI and the stages-of-change model; using the approach with groups, couples, and adolescents; and applications to general medical care, health promotion, and criminal justice settings.

Gobbledy-Gouke at its best 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 17 people found this review helpful.

While it does cover a range of addictions it is VERY techical and almost impossible for a layman to read. But, it does cover a lot and asses almost all addictions as well as eating disorders gambling and sexual crimes both seriously criminal and mildly criminal.

A classic 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am compelled to write this because there is only one review, and it misses the point. Marlatt is a pioneer in the field of addictions, and introduced science to the field of substance abuse treatment.

While it may be difficult for a layman to understand, it is a very important work for any professional in the field to have on their shelf.

Editorial Review:

This important work elucidates why relapse is so common for people recovering from addictive behavior problems--and what can be done to keep treatment on track. It provides an empirically supported framework for helping people with addictive behavior problems develop the skills to maintain their treatment goals, even in high-risk situations, and deal effectively with setbacks that occur. The expert contributors clearly identify the obstacles that arise in treating specific problem behaviors, review the factors that may trigger relapse at different stages of recovery, and present procedures for teaching effective cognitive and behavioral coping strategies.
