A nice overview, but not very in depth 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a really nice book for someone starting out working with the elderly in a creative arts therapy field. The book is a quick, short and easy read, and demonstrates the benefits of art, music and movement therapies and gerontology. As an art therapist, I think the art therapy section was accurate, but not very detailed or in depth. A lay person or beginner may not be able to fully grasp the philosophy or benefits of art therapy, but there are many other books out there for that. Nevertheless, it's a great read for a "taste" of several creative arts therapies and how they benefit and can be used with this population.

Editorial Review:

Person-centered care emphasizes the importance of putting the individual before the illness to provide holistic support. This book offers practical advice for arts therapists and health care professionals delivering person-centered dementia care. The contributors are all practising healing arts therapists who show how music, dance and the visual arts can be used in partnership with person-centered care to support those with dementia. Using case studies of the use of the different arts therapies, they illustrate the many beneficial effects of this approach to healing arts therapies for people with dementia. These include improved memory, reduced anxiety, increased self-esteem and better communication, leading to the added benefits of a sense of community and successful group interaction.

Editorial Review:

Since its beginnings in the 1950s, the person-centred approach to therapy has developed in many ways. In this important new text, Campbell Purton introduces the "focusing" approach of Eugene Gendlin. The book discusses Gendlin's theoretical innovations and their implications for clinical practice. It throws light on the relationship between the various schools of therapy, and on the relationship between therapy and such areas as ethics and spirituality. It will be essential reading for students and practioners of person-centred therapy.

Editorial Review:

As research in human development moves away from its strong emphasis on particular life stages, this timely special issue provides an interdisciplinary analysis of research in human development across the lifespan. The authors present varied and engaging topics, including a focus of biocultural and personal influences on development; the emergence of a stronger partnership between life-course sociology and life-span psychology; an historical framework for the frequently-controversial cohort differences in intelligence; evolutionary perspectives of aging of brain structure and cognition; and evolutionary biology and the strategic view of ontogeny. A notable contribution to the field of human development, Theoretical Approaches to Lifespan Development is a thought-provoking work for researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners.

Editorial Review:

Carl R. Rogers (1902-1987), a founder of the humanistic psychology movement, is one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. His impact on education, counseling, psychotherapy, conflict resolution, and peace is unparalleled. He has enriched the world through his empathic presence, his rigorous research, and his authorship of more than two hundred articles and sixteen books. On Becoming a Person is one of the classics in psychological literature. Dr. Rogers created a profound and fundamental shift in the fields of psychology and human relations. His deep belief that each person has worth, dignity, and the capacity for self-direction was counter to the pervading thought of his day. In order to fully understand and appreciate his impact, it is important to know what experiences shaped his life and what influences directed his thinking. Carl Rogers: The Quiet Revolutionary is a unique kind of autobiography, or oral history, that explores all these aspects of his life, and more, through a series of interviews. The result is a lively account in Rogers' own words of the peaks and valleys of both his professional and personal life. In it he describes his early life, his family, his schooling, and his intellectual development, and it includes the early development of person-centered therapy, his disillusionment with academia, "The Therapeutic Hour" (including his thoughts on training the therapist, on supervision, and on research in psychotherapy), and his extensive efforts to reduce international tension through his work in northern Ireland, South Africa, and Central America ("The Peace Project").

Editorial Review:

Studying Human Rights draws on key theories and methods from the social sciences to develop a framework for the systematic study of human rights problems. It argues that solid empirical analysis of human rights problems rests on examining the observable practices from state and non-state actors that constitute human rights violations to provide plausible explanations for their occurrence and provide deeper understanding of their meaning.

Such explanation and understanding draws on the theoretical insights from rational, structural, and cultural approaches in the social sciences. This book includes:

DT An outline of the scope of human rights
DT The terrain of key actors that have an impact on human rights
DT A summary of the social science theories, methods and measures for studying human rights
DT A separate treatment of global comparative studies, truth commissions, and human rights impact assessment.

Studying Human Rights is the first book to use the synthesis of social sciences approaches to studying human rights and it quantitative and qualitative approach provides useful insights. This book makes a unique contribution to the extant literature on human rights and is an invaluable tool for both scholars and practitioners of this area.

Editorial Review:

Students of the humanities confront two fundamental questions: How valid and rigorous is the type of knowledge attained in these disciplines? And what good is it? In "The Humanities in the Age of Technology," Ciriaco Morón Arroyo offers a systematic inquiry into these questions and outlines the ongoing crisis of the humanities. He speaks to the low value society places on such disciplines as linguistics, literature, history, philosophy, and theology. His study is theoretical.

The author begins with a definition of the humanities, and, since the social and the natural sciences have humanistic aspects, he pays attention to the disciplines of literature, history, philosophy, and theology. The plural term "disciplines" points to the unifying nucleus of the interdisciplinary; the interdisciplinary is rooted in the human being as the focus from which all questions in the humanities and sciences emerge. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the phenomena of reading, understanding texts, and knowledge of reality. The final chapters are concerned with the usefulness of these disciplines in our society. The author argues that the humanities are the most useful disciplines, as they are the "sciences" that deal with human concerns such as personal identity, collective identity, communication, creativity, and the ultimate sense of life. "It is hypocritical or naïve to defend the humanities as a bulwark against science and technology. The humanities, far from opposing them, are the halo that showers them with meaning and which receives meaning from their efforts."—from the book

un buen libro para especilistas 5 out of 5 stars.
