Editorial Review:

"When accessed with the specific cognitive imagery procedure of TIR, a primary traumatic incident can be stripped of its emotional charge permitting its embedded cognitive components to be revealed and restructured. With its emotional impact depleted and its irrational ideation revised, the memory of a traumatic incident becomes innocuous and thereafter remains permanently incapable of restimulation and intrusion into present time." --Robert H. Moore, Ph.D.

Traumatic Incident Reduction: Research & Results provides synopses of several TIR research projects from 1994 to 2004. Each article, in the researcher's own words, provides new insights into the effectiveness of Traumatic Incident Reduction. The three doctoral dissertation level studies that form the core of this book investigate the results of TIR outcomes with crime victims, incarcerated females, and anxiety and panic disorders respectively (Bisbey, Valentine, and Coughlin).

Both informal and formal reports of the "Active Ingredient" study by Charles R. Figley and Joyce Carbonell of Florida State University show how TIR stacks up against other brief treatments for traumatic stress, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) et al.

A further case study by Teresa Descilo, MSW informs of outcomes from an ongoing project to provide help to at-risk middle-school students in an inner-city setting.

An introduction by Robert H. Moore, Ph.D. provides background into how TIR provides relief for symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and firmly establishes the roots of TIR in the traditions of desensitization, imaginal flooding, and Rogerian techniques.

This book contains the most detailed list of Traumatic Incident Reduction and Metapsychology resources yet published. This appendix includes references to dissertations, books, selected journal articles, AMI/TIRA newsletter compendium, web resources, and the TIR and Metapsychology lecture series (audio). Includes index.

"We are very impressed with the power and simplicity of TIR in helping trauma sufferers work through their frightening experiences and find great relief."
- Charles R. Figley, Ph.D., editor of TRAUMATOLOGY

"Being able to watch someone go from confusion to certainty, from sadness to happiness in a single session is a wonderful privilege. It is invigorating. I get the same satisfaction and joy from teaching Metapsychology techniques to others."
- Lori Beth Bisbey, Ph.D., Chartered Counselling Psychologist

"TIR does not require years of collegiate study to pre-qualify the provision of assistance to others. The efficacy of TIR is not contingent on the unique talents of a particular facilitator. The procedure is standardized and does not require continuous adjustments."
- Wendy Coughlin, Ph.D.

Editorial Review:

Some of the top scientists of today—the geographer Jared Diamond, the linguist Steven Pinker, the philosopher Daniel Dennett, Marvin Minsky, Lee Smolin, among others—discuss the unique contributions each is making to the development of modern thought. Some of these thinkers are in sync, others in dissent, but what emerges is a dialogue that serves to support the assertion that a third class will emerge where the literary intellectual and the scientist merge. This study not only serves as an introduction to some of the best scientific minds of the 21st century, but also brings together the sciences and humanities in a way that, until now, seemed virtually impossible.

Fascinating and enlightening read 5 out of 5 stars.

Looking for a book that could introduce me to basic concepts in evolutionary psychology, I came across this Kindle edition and found myself engrossed several hours later, having not moved much other than to turn pages! Cartwright manages to provide a solid and in-depth look into an enormously broad field without becoming dry or overly academic. Chapters are divided into topics such as sex selection (Why does a male peacock have a tail that has no apparent biological purpose, while the female peahen has no equivalent? Because the male has evolved a trait that will make him more attractive to potential carriers of his offspring.) to why babies cling to objects after infancy (a vestige from when infants gripped fur to keep from falling from their mothers) to why men seek physical descriptions in personal ads while women are interested in the wealth and status of potential male partners. The topics were just varied enough to keep a layperson's interest but stimulating enough to provoke a deeper curiosity. Very impressive!

Editorial Review:

In recent years, a new discipline has arisen that argues human behaviour can be understood in terms of evolutionary processes.Evolutionary Explanation of Human Behaviour is an introductory level book covering Evolutionary Psychology, this new and controversial field. The book deals with three main areas: human reproductive behaviour, evolutionary explanations of mental disorders and the evolution of intelligence and the brain. The book is particularly suitable for the AQA-A A2 syllabus, but will also be of interest to undergraduates studying evolutionary psychology for the first time and anyone with a general interest in this new discipline.

Editorial Review:

This book presents a rigorous empirical exploration of the ideas of George Herbert Mead. While Mead's work has been highly influential, there are few empirical studies that instantiate his conception of mind, self and society. Beginning with a novel interpretation of Mead's theory, the book argues that Mead's core problematic is the explanation of self-reflection. What is interesting about the theory is that it provides a precise account of how self-reflection is rooted in institutionalised patterns of social interaction. The empirical part of the book utilises Mead's theory to conceptualise social interaction between tourists and locals in a remote part of northern India. The analysis details the intricate ways in which both tourists and locals come to reflect upon themselves from each others' perspectives. Tourists worry about appearing ignorant and wealthy in the eyes of locals, and locals wonder why they are the object of so many tourists' photographs. The promise of the book is to explicate exactly how this integration of perspectives arises.

Editorial Review:

This collection of essays brings together every major stream of scholarship and theoretical orientation in contemporary psychology, written by a galaxy of prominent names in their fields. The essays cover cross-cultural psychology, cultural psychology, cultural anthropology, evolutionary psychology and indigenous psychology, and address problems arising out of the application of psychological theories to practice. In his introduction, the editor summarizes the essential features of every position, arguing that it is both possible and desirable to promote meaningful interfaces between them, leading to a holistic perspective on human development.

The volume is split into two sections: the first contains theoretical perspectives with some reference to methodological issues. The second deals with research on topics with which the authors have been associated for many years now. In many cases, the contents of the book draws upon and takes forward work the authors have been doing for a long time; in others, new ideas and insights have been introduced. Collectively, the research covers a

large portion of the world and provides excellent cross-cultural perspectives, backed at

many places by strong empirical data.

In Adventures in Human Understanding, the story is revealed as a therapeutic tool - the medium by which lessons may be learnt and persist in the memory; and the medium that provides metaphors for life, gleaning meaning from experience. Leading clinical hypnotist John G. Watkins PhD has embodied his extensive knowledge of psychology in the 'Adventures in Human Understanding' gathered in this book. Arranged into four sections that address the four stages of life, each story is followed by a psychological analysis, ensuring that Adventures in Human Understanding will be an effective instrument for facilitating therapy, as well as an enjoyable source of stories for everyone. A unique insight into the unconscious motivations that underlie human behaviour.

Ordinary Ecstasy: The Dialectics of Humanistic Psychology by John Rowan [Paperback] 5 out of 5 stars.

I was happy with the purchase.

Editorial Review:

Humanistic Psychology ranges far and wide into education, management, gender issues and many other fields. Ordinary Ecstasy , first published in 1976, is widely regarded as one of the most important books on the subject. Although this new edition still contains much of the original material, it has been completely rethought in the light of postmodern ideas, with more emphasis on the paradoxes within humanistic psychology, and takes into account changes in many different areas, with a greatly extended bibliography.

This book is fun to read and adds insight into the beyond. i dont feel like right a good review for this book but if you want a good read then read it, know it, think about it, and live it.

Editorial Review:

In these collected essays, Timothy Leary explains his belief that humans are morphing into space beings. He describes eight circuits of human metamorphosis, analyzing in depth the consciousness — and its purpose — manifested by each change. Fifteen chapters cover a range of topics from "Spinning Up the Genetic Highway" to "Neurogeography of Terrestrial Politics" to "Twelve Stages of Post-Cultural Evolution." In each of these insightful pieces the author describes the complicated psychological metamorphosis that precedes the launch of humans into space beings. This collection of Leary’s early work at his imaginative and provocative best had an enormous impact on psychology and the humanist movement.

Absolutely MUST-read 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Brownback simply compares Scripture with the current self-esteem teaching in most churches and the churches come up wanting. However, Brownback doesn't merely demolish the self-esteem hersey and leave it alone. He then proceeds to open the Scriptures to define God's solution. It is the clearest biblical look at the subject I have ever encountered. If you don't have it in your library, you are missing an important work.

Editorial Review:

This book analyzes the contemporary self-esteem movement from a biblical perspective. It discusses its secular philosophical and psychological backgrounds, explains how it has infiltrated the evangelical worldview, and examines the various arguments used to demonstrate that it is compatible with Scripture. It concludes that the concept of self-esteem propagated by secular and evangelical sources is not biblical, but instead is doing substantial damage to individuals and relationships. It offers and supports an almost universally overlooked alternative that is thoroughly biblical in nature and that promotes behavioral, emotional, and relational health. This book can be used effectively as a self-help manual, as a textbook, or as a personal guide to understanding contemporary culture.
